Hope you guys enjoy this one! The "old school" style of production always takes the longest, but I always end up most happy with it. Let me know if there's anything you'd like to see different in these videos presentation-wise, I'm always happy to hear what you have to say!
I’m late here but how much do you think his contract is affected by how much the bears ask him to do. He’s playing every position a CB can, with a bad D-line. At a certain point never truly settling into a specific position has to affect numbers.
Loving the content so far. There aren’t a lot of truly in depth analysis videos like this for the Bears. Couldn’t come at a better time either. NFL coverage gets so dry this time of year.
Alex I really appreciate that! Depth is the name of my game - why put in the effort of making a video if we’re not going to find a new way to look at the game we love, right?
Thanks for commenting - every like and comment really goes a long way towards getting YT to promote the video, so if you’ve got any Bears fan friends shoot ‘em the link 😂 I’ll keep cranking things out while I’m at it!
I agree with the sentiment that anything under $17.5m and I’ll be happy. They have 3 key guys up for extensions and it’ll be so interesting to see how they handle them.
To be honest even the 17.5Mil was a number I had to change *today* because I originally said 15 and didn’t want to have to own it if they signed him for 16 😂
$13.5 million contract laden with incentives that could escalate him to $17M
See now someone is thinkin 🤔
Bro, you said a mouth full when you said Jaylen switched both sides for the best receiver .... Last year we had one of the hardest scheduleds & Johnson took the best receiver from every team!!! Pay the man!
Players like him don’t show up everyday, Pay the Man indeed
Ha! You’re telling me - I felt like I needed to explain *all* the components of how strange it is to actually play both sides or else folks wouldn’t believe me how uncommon it was!
Nice breakdown. However his bum shoulder is too much of a liability he hasn’t finished a season yet. Can’t invest in him.
If that shoulder has a degenerative issue I agree with you, but if he can play 13-15 games per year I think that’s still worth an extension. He’ll be a tough man to replace if you move on
Johnson is a keeper! I really like this format for videos, well done.
Thank you ML! They take a bit more work than Bears Today and other types, but for “bigger projects” I think a 15-min video like this is dandy 👌 So glad you enjoyed it!
No he’s not.
@@THC_Comeback87i don’t see why not he’s a very solid cb1
Excellent analysis...hopefully they come to an agreement for under $15m. Not elite but certainly worth extension at the right price.
I don't know how the hell the NFL allowed the Bucs to re-sign Jamel Dean for only $13M/yr. I was actually hoping the Bears would go after him this offseason.
That said, I'd be happy with an extension for Johnson for anything less than 15.5M/yr
Poles clearly values the secondary as indicated by his draft investment. That being said, some of those draft picks could be planned to replace Johnson. I’m more of the belief that’s it’s tough to find above average secondary players, so you should pay them when you have them. However, Johnson isn’t an elite CB. It’s a tough situation, but I’d agree that like 13-15 mill is a sweet spot. Bears could target a CB with one of their firsts next year, but you’d have to expect 1 of those picks is an edge, and if gervon or Pickens don’t pan out, the other pick could be DT (although if that Carolina pick is high, I’d like Emeka to fill out wideout group)
Great video keep up the great work with the new channel
Thank you so much Cooper - you bet!
Asking as a non Bears fan that is needing CB help, what do you think the Bears are now willing to give him up for? (considering he is a
I’ve been opposed to resigning him just bc of how much he seems to want.. hopefully they can find a number that’s good for the bears. Could they tag him?
Quit playing and resign that Man!!!
Awesome video! Keep up the good work 🤙🏽 I could watch you do these on all the bears players 🐻 ⬇️
Thank you so much!!
and the bears gave him the bag.
Love the video bro I agree keep JJ 🐻⬇️
You’ve got a great channel here dude. Sub’d after watching the first video
Thank you so much! I'll work to keep it up!
Great analysis. I had commented on a Twitter post of yours discussing this yesterday, admittedly before I watched this video.
I still think he is closer to a $15 million player. There’s so many factors at play, and it is not all apples-to-apples.
Jamel Dean has another highly-paid CB outside of him in Carlton Davis, and it’s possible the Bucs viewed him as more than a $13 million player, but could only offer him that because of Davis. This is all speculation, but perhaps Dean took a team-friendly deal to remain in Tampa because he wanted to be there. Hard to say.
I guess the point I am trying to make is, yes the market will absolutely be the first dictator in determining his value. But when you have a young player who has established himself in two COMPLETELY DIFFERENT defenses as a high-end player, who quite literally follows around the other team’s best receiver (as you mentioned in the video), and plays a premium position, sometimes you “overpay” a little to avoid them hitting the market.
If Johnson had 6-10 career interceptions and was just a tick faster, he would be a $20 million player, IMO.
Maybe Bears offer 3 years/$45 million with a team option in year 3, $27-30 million guaranteed? That way Johnson gets paid early, gives himself a chance to earn big money in 3 years when he is still only 27, and the team can always extend him again for bigger money before the end of the contract if he starts to produce more from a statistical standpoint.
Just curious as to your thoughts on this?
That’s exactly why I said at the end that I’d take anything under 17.5M/Y - I think Johnson is MUCH better than his numbers indicate, but his numbers make anything above 15mil a tough sell!
Contract negotiations are about as unfair a thing as there is in football - when people puff their chest and say ‘Poles will set his price and not move’, issues like this are why they may be more right than they realize. We’ll see though - it all comes down to whether Jaylon is willing to play out Year 4 and risk losing guaranteed money on the table this year!
@@RobertSchmitzNFL Totally agree that anything over $15M is a tough sell, looking big picture. Frankly, anything over $13M may be a tough sell with this regime, based on decisions of the past. They do clearly have a number they see a player’s value at that they don’t want to budge off of. Will be interesting to see what that number is for Jaylon. If they see Edmunds as $18M player, you would think they view Johnson as a $15M player, but it is always cloudy when it comes to how new regimes view players drafted by old ones.
Great breakdowns!
Great video. i love Jaylon Johnson, pay the man for God's sake.
Thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Great video brother
yes resign him asap
Great video. Subbed!
Thanks so much Mike! I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Great video as always Robert. The GM job is as difficult as it gets, and this video proves it. Are you certain that you can get something at least as good as Jaylon for less money? Tough question.
If possible, I would like to see a video about the new Bears LB corp, what can we expect to see in contrast with what we saw with Roquan, and a comparison with the LB group of Urlacher-Briggs-Hillenmeyer
I’ll see what I can do! Got plenty of things coming, we’ll get to the ILBs when we can.
I tend to agree with you though - it’s easy to puff your chest out and act like Jaylon’s replaceable, but good DBs are outrageously hard to find. Even with 15-17M, could you find one as good?
Great video! Honestly around 17-18m, I dont even think would be THAT bad if you structure it maybe to have more hits a bit earlier when we still have massive cap space, mainly because similar to like the DJ Moore contract, if you sign him to a top 6-8 contract, that will quickly turn into a top 10-20 contract with how contracts are increasing heavily every year. I think locking such a young corner down for that kind of money just has so much upside that you take the risk on the injury.
Thanks so much! I actually totally agree - while his realistic value isn’t that high *yet*, his semantic value to the Bears is outrageous. Even WITH Stevenson added I think they’ll struggle at times next year, but if Tyrique has to be CB1 while he’s at it? Get outta town.
IMO you extend Mooney and Jaylon if they’re being reasonable. CB & WR are premium positions - lock up your guys and move on
Keep at it with these videos
You bet BK!
I missed your face 😅
Ha! You prefer BearsToday?? Good to know!
Great content
Thank you so much!
Another banger! Just thinking out loud... a couple major questions that make dollar-to-dollar comparisons uncertain are
1) how much the guy wants to stay in Chicago - my understanding is JJ's family is still in California so may not be willing to take a discount for the 'convenience' of staying on his rookie team and (maybe more important)
2) What are the alternative options available at the same time? Did the competition in the CB FA market last year compare favorably to the guys this year? Cause if your only alternative is a 9M/yr CB maybe you toss the 14M guy an extra 1-2.
Thank you so much Udawg! You rule!
You are killing it bro. Very insightful and detail truly a breath of fresh air Rob. I really like JJ that shoulder does worry me a little and I know that coach eberflus loves his DB's to tackle. He's been the hardest player for me to figure out whether they give an extension to or not, he's a vet, but still very young and ascending, so maybe they wait till the season has progressed more before they make a decision I think he either gets extended or is a trade deadline possibilities. I definitely think he is respected and liked in the locker room Justin Fields definitely seems to be a supporter of his I have seen them on a podcast together and he was at one of Jaylon's charity events so he has the backing of his teammates. He's probably a top-15-20 cornerback in the NFL so whatever you pay that caliber of player may be the starting point of contract negotiations. It would also be nice if he could add a 3 to 4 interceptions season as part of his resume Great 👍🏼video keep them coming bro...
Thank you so much - you bet! I’ll keep as many coming as I can!
Thank you Robert! Was waiting for this.
I gotchu Rowdy! Had you heard about it on Twitter? 😂
Love the vids, I personally don’t think he’s worth it, the league is getting faster and faster. If I’m signing a player to an extension, I want an A+ talent. Poles values the size speed combo much more as well
First off, I’m so glad you enjoy them!
Second, if only acquiring A+ talents were so easy! There’s ~8 corners in the 32 team league that I think are A+ level (and even then, many are As and A-s) so extending Jaylon while we’re flush with cap makes sense to me if the price is right. In a worst case where he’s a CB2, you’ll have a very good DB room!
@@RobertSchmitzNFL That's true, I just feel like the outside CB role in the Eberflus defense seems somewhat simple and replaceable. It remains to be seen if they were going with more man reps last year b/c they needed to send blitzes to get pressure. If they go more zone heavy it seems like he's somewhat replaceable.
One interesting video idea would be to explain what role the safeties (and the mike?) play in Cover 2 schemes and the skill sets necessary for those roles. Dying to know if Ejax and Brisker are good scheme fits and how important those roles are, especially when the offense knows you're running Cover 2
Great video Rob!
Thank you so much Scott!!
Hell yeah
