Don't know castles in the south of europe are pretty different from castles in the north. You really have to like that style. And there is mostly architectural influence from the mores. I find the farest you can go south to buy a medieval castle is France, an example is Carcassonne, sometimes 18th century castles are also pretty ugly. Almost in every town is a real castlen age varying from early middle ages to the 19th century. I think buying a castle somwhere in France is logistically not so interesting. Better buy in denser populated and in more accessible countries like Holland, Belgium or Germany. Also it is very nive to see interiors of old castles but keeping out draft and keeping it warm inside is no joke. Start with the castle of the crusader Godfried of Bouillon situated in the Belgian south place called !ouillon. He was one of the crusaders. You will see it ain't all too big but it is very pragmatically designed a small upper situated court yard where the did falconary. The main room has hardly windows and was lit with fire. The stone is local stone. Kiefer - think. Then move land inward and visit more recent castle like the Rubens castle in the town callrd @erk. Totally different. Then move Bruges a medieval town like it was back in the middle ages. Many castle many styles on a hankershief. Do also visit convents and see what the create with archers and simple light.
