  • Since getting my DJI Mavic Mini I've experienced footage that looks like jello. The only error message I've got is "Gimbal Motor Overload". Its very frustrating because i've been extremely gentle with this drone. It's never been crashed or even landed hard. I need help or this thing is getting returned.

    Gimbal is delicate and susceptible to dust and gravel. If you are launching off dust ground, it gets caught under the gimbal. Try hand launching and try blowing air and moving the gimbal gently to try to get out any dust particles, sand or gravel.

    Ok check your props ? If you have to change them all because one prop unbalanced can cause jello in my opinion and I have been in drones 10 years

      Thank you for the advice. i appreciate you taking the time to try and help me out. Unfortunately I have already changed the props with no luck. I have decided to go ahead and return the drone to Best Buy and get a replacement unit from them at no cost. I'll post another video with the results I get from the new drone. Thank you again for the help.

      I second this, been building drones for years, this looks like typical prop imbalance, try another set and see.

    The Tactical Traveler - Yep, I've had that message 2 or 3 times with my Mini. The first time it happened I had booted it up and placed it on the sofa while going through the DJI app menus. I was a bit careless and hadn't noticed that the uneven surface on the sofa was touching the gimbal preventing it from moving freely. The gimbal definitely got the shakes until I switched it off. I examined it then switched it back on again and it was fine (level surface this time).
    The next episodes were after I installed a UV camera filter (the stick-on type). I got the same 'overload' message a couple of times prior to taking off (gimbal free and clear). I had also read that the Mini's gimbal didn't work well with some filters (clip-on type) as the gimbal wasn't designed for the extra load so I removed the UV filter. I then booted up the Mini and the gimbal seems OK but haven't flown it yet.
    I just read that you returned yours to Best Buy and think that was the right decision as yours does appear to have a gremlin. Good luck with the new one and Cheers from Thailand!

    I add tiny drops of oil in all axis, Everything works fine now though I had the same problem

    Mostly this problem comes those whos useing nd filters after some time gimble little motar become hot while moving with heavy weight ND filter, i just recommend fly it without nd filters

      Thats right sir.. when i remove the uv filter no more gimbal overload. Thats why i dont use filter

    1. IMU calibration
    2. replace the error propeller

      @@IgalOren He's saying that one of the propellers might be causing the extra vibration. Could be bent or a different weight than the others.

    Have you tried filming in 1080p? If there is no wobble in this format then its the SD card. I would return it if it does not fix the problem...while you can.

    I've had 2 of these Mavic's and never seen this issue. I would return while you can and try a new one. Great drone overall!

    I have experienced the "gimball motor overload" error a few times. It has always happened when I've taken off from a dusty take off point. I guess the dirt gets into the gimball mechanism and makes the motors work more than they should leading to that error.
    I don't get the wobble that you mention though. I think that is something else and may not be related to the dirt messing with the gimball.

      I was concerned about the same issue regarding dust getting into the gimbal. I have been using a landing pad to minimize the potential for dust to get into the gimbal. I have also tried to gently use some air to insure the gimbal is clean.

    I saw the wobble. But it appears more of a distortion. Here is a wild guess. Your SD card might not be fast enough to collect the data??? Maybe reformat card?

      LDPLDP2 Thanks for the suggestion. I forgot to mention in the video, but I did change to a high quality brand new SD card and have re formatted before every flight.

      I have this issue as well on my Mini 3 Pro twice. The first time I reset the gymble and that sorted it out. However, that didn't work the second time it got the jelly image. This time after I had a minor crash, where it hit a small branch and fell several meters onto some grass. The gymble seems to be okay but I think I will try and blow out any debris and after that replace any dodgey looking propellers.

    Never seen this wobble on either of mine. I had a different issue where the gimbal would just seemingly “give up” in high gusts so the video goes all over the place and then recovers, which shits you up looking at the FPV because it makes you think the drone has dropped from the sky for a couple seconds.
    I recalibrated gimbal and haven’t seen it since but also haven’t flown in the same conditions either.

      After posting this video I learned I just had a defective unit with problems with the gimbal. I have returned my original Mavic Mini and recently received a replacement drone. I sincerely appreciate you and the many others who took the time to comment in an effort to help me with this problem. I will be posting another video about my experience returning the drone and the results I'm getting from the new unit. Thanks again.

    Maybe grit or dirt in the gimbal mechanism? Are you landing it on the ground or pad? The Mavic Mini sits very low on the ground, for that reason I always hand catch it when landing as it's possible for the propwash to kick up a lot of dirt and debris even landing on the pad which can get into that very exposed gimbal motors⚠️
    Either that or you just got a lemon?

      PD Tech I think I may have just got a defective unit. I returned it for a replacement. I’ve got the new Mavic Mini at the house, I just need to test it out this weekend.     Not that problem. Just a problem calibration IMU fail. Can't even get motors to run. Too many happy happy videos out there. Few addressing problems and solutions.

    I don't know if you solved your problem, but for what it's worth, that jello effect is always due to vibration. I have a Mini and never seen this. This might be obvious, but check for a loose motor, bent motor shaft, cracked prop blade, etc...Also see if the gimbal has some debris stuck in it. Good luck.

      You're correct, the problem was due to a defective gimbal. DJI replaced the drone at no cost and the replacement unit has worked perfectly so far.

    I’m having gimbal drop, but no error. Drone is solid and normal gimbal Operation. Just when gimbal is put in 20 percent up advanced mode. No shake or any other issues.

      Dad Random I also noticed the shake initially started when I switched the gimbal to the 20 percent up mode. It stopped temporarily when I reset all the gimbal settings back to factory default. Eventually even resetting and recalibrating no longer worked. I ultimately decided to return the drone for a replacement unit. I’ll keep you posted on my results with the new drone.     Had the same message this morning on my SECOND returned mini...sent it back..enough of this shit. Very disappointed. Purchased a mavic air 2 in its place instead of getting a 3rd replacement. Had this one for three weeks..no crashes and always hand land..it’s never touched the ground since day one!

    I'll play the devil's advocate for a second. Has it been left in a hot car or truck? Have you tried changing all of the props? Do you notice any vibrations in the arms of the Mini?

      Excellent questions. I have not left it in a vehicle, and I did change the props. From all the comments I think I may have just got a defective unit. I am going to return it to Best Buy for a replacement. I'll post another video when I get the new drone with my results .

    Some thoughts, While craft was on the mat , no sign of wobbles, and not recording. Aloft , there are wobbles before and after you hit the red button.
    Are you showing footage from monitor, or is it from SD card. My first impression was rolling shutter, brought on by vibration . I'd first check gimbaI mounting. I have a mini but am waitng for batteries, so haven't flown it.

      Footage is definitely from SD card. I upload to my computer from the SD card to edit and post this video. DJI replaced my drone and advised I had a defective gimbal motor.

    For the amount of money that you spent I'd return it at Best Buy and demand to get another (without paying the 15% restocking fee). I waited to buy mine at Walmart which has no restocking fees and you get 30 days (instead of 14) to see if there is an issue.

      Thanks for the info. I contacted Best Buy and they advised they waive the restocking fee if the unit is defective and they send me a replacement. I was told the restocking fee only applies to a return with a reason of "just because I don't like it"

      I had contacted them before too and they told me the same thing. From watching many videos the "Jello effect" should only happen when you are flying in super cold conditions so something is up. I've had mine for only 3 weeks and I've had no issues. Good luck.

    Def jello. If you've checked your props and there are no nicks etc then you have an issue and send it back.

      Thanks for the help. I changed the props already. Based on all the great feedback I received from this video I decided to return the drone to Best Buy for a replacement unit.     I know I'm 90 years late to this party, but this looks like the CPU image stabilization is way out of sync with the gimbal cam... this wobble was seen quite a bit during the early years of 'Go Pro' and other action cams, etc. There's a million micro adjustments that are happening as the camera is filming and sometimes the whole system is just 'off'. Did you get it replaced?

      Joe Tamanini You’re never too late my friend. Yes, I did ultimately get it replaced by DJI. They simply advised I had a defective gimbal. The new replacement drone has worked perfectly. Thank you for the comment and the help, I really appreciate it.

    Hi. Reading the comments below the one fellow said maybe it's the card. That would be a simple and quick test, put another card in and see how it performs. Great video though, thanks for posting.

I have been through hell ordering one through Ebay. Bad mistake. I payed in full and it never showed up and after 3 weeks battling with Ebay they finally credited my Paypal account. What a pain. Then after looking at your video realizing Best Buy has them, I ordered it and I could have picked it up the same day!! Kind of funny. But just getting over the flu now, don't tell work but I'm going to stay home and head out soon and get it and play with it at home. Still to sick to go out and fly but this will cheer me up today.     I have seen this discussed elsewhere (can't remember where) may be fine dust trapped in gimbal. Try compressed air can. Good luck.

      Steve Dawson No dirt or dust, I even tried as other suggested gently using some compressed air to make sure. I ultimately returned this drone for a replacement unit.       I ended up returning the drone and was provided a replacement unit free of charge. DJI advised I had a defective gimbal.

    Try Cinemode as well I think some of your issue is to much welly. Be more composed on the sticks and have you updated your firmware and the batteries.

    Having a few glitches from my A2s from purchase I figured it was normal. The gimble overload is new. I did find some small specks of sand in the gimble area so gently cleaned them out. Manually checked all axis of the gimble while off and all is well. Tried to recreate the earlier gimble over loads and was unable to do so. So I missed a bullet. I do use a landing pad and have had only one hard landing if you would call it that. I am very particular about my camera equipment, so I chalk it up to a either a refurbished drone sold as new or user error. Since I have owned this drone for a few years now I suspect the warranty is of date. I keep it stored in a hard case so no chance of hard handling or dirt getting in there. I am adding a gentle blow to gimble area and turning drone upside down and burp it from now one. Maybe checking the gimble before turning on will help also. Im hesitant to blow compressed air as I dont want to lodge anything sand in a mechanical area. Will say dji is the best drone I have ever used and will stick with the brand.

    Thanks for sharing . I'd say take it back and put your money towards the Evo 2 . For everything cool thing the Mini does it has 3 defects . It was rushed to market to make a grab at the Christmas market .
    I have been a long time DJI supporter but dealing with they're support over the last month has really opened my eyes to the fact DJI is a Chinese company pretending they are not.

      I think you make some very valid points. I received my replacement unit and i'm going to give it a try, but I don't know if I would invest in one of DJI's more expensive drones based on my customer service experience with the Mavic Mini.

    Do you have a Nd filter n, I had the same problem . I have changed to stick in Nd filters with that reusable silicon sticky pad . Problem solved .

    try to return it if possible, it will be great if you have dji care they will replace the unit it self, if you can not return and you decided to use the unit you can use mercalli software to remove the those wobbling

      I do have DJI Care Refresh and have opened a case with them. I will caution others to be aware that the communication with DJI has been very difficult. I don't want to sound like a jerk, but when speaking to customer service there is a very difficult language barrier to overcome. I don't think they have understood my questions, and I have trouble understanding what the next steps are in the repair/return process.

    I had a feeling that power issues in gusty weather is in part (large or significant?) due to powering the gimble at the same time power is needed to maneuver safely, lile a RTH. Maybe a test of FPV ve Gimble powered leveling mode should be tried under gusty conditions.

In this video the wind was less than 5mph. I always check the drone forecast before flying. Unfortunately I have decided to return the drone to Best Buy for a replacement unit.     Hi there I have had the same problem I cleaned the drone moved the gimbal by hand up and down there was a small sound like cracking then everything went well

    I got mine on the fourth time or. I was filming with the camera facing straight down as I was doing a wedding. Got enough for the couple but toward the end got the gimbal overload error. Didn't even know what to do. Landed it and the gimbal seemed "free floating" but since I never paid much attention to it prior to this happening I don't know. I bought the $799.00 kit and I'm pretty pissed. May have to turn down another event in two weeks or but it for just the mini itself.

    I had the same problem with my DJI Mini 3 Pro after 3 weeks of flying. Getting mine replaced. Hope it solved my issue.

    Maybe it has to do something on thaat camera mount that 4 rubber things that kinda absorb the unstable/unwanted vibrations created by the 4 motors to tge camera. Might be one of the rubber holder dont work properly

    maybe one of the rubber gimble holders popped out or did something to make it look unstable with more vibrations cause of it

      Thanks for taking the time to watch and reply. I ultimately returned the drone and received a replacement unit from DJI. They advised I had a defective gimbal and replaced my Mavic Mini very easily. The replacement drone has worked flawlessly so far. Thanks again.

    Never ever use a can air it might spray the inside of the can air has water vapor you don't want that touching your drone gimbal also oil BIG no oil best way to get dust stuck on it
    Best thing to use it one of those kids nose air things work best

    For the gimbal motor overload concern: check if there are dust or anything that is blocking or stopping the gimbal from moving freely. If you get this error always, i would suggest sending it in for checking.
    For the wobble effect: There is actually no issue with the drone itself or the drone's gimbal. It is the signal between your phone and the drone. The drone is just trying to send your phone a live video feed. If you are watching some fpv racing videos, you would see the "wobble" effect on their video feeds.
    One more thing, i'd suggest you use the raw footage saved in the sd card of the drone instead of the video saved on your phone. The videos that are automatically saved on your phone "most of the time" has a quality issue like the "wobble" effect or some parts of the video has a black spots on it.

      Thank you for the reply. The footage in the video is from the SD card. I start off showing my screen recording , but then switch to the footage from the SD card downloaded directly to my computer from the SD card.

      Thanks for taking the time to watch the video and reply. The drone is running the latest firmware and all of the batteries were also updated. I even at the direction of DJI refreshed the firmware a second time and still had the same results. I have decided to return the drone to Best Buy for a replacement unit. I will make another video updating my results with the new drone. Thank you again.

I purchased a high quality SanDisk Extreme 128gb card prior to this video. I sincerely appreciate the help. I have decided to return the drone to Best Buy for a replacement unit.       No, never did that. I can see how that could potentially damage the gimbal. I returned my drone as defective and it was replaced by DJI at no cost. I was told I had a defective gimbal from the factory.

      Branie Best Buy was very easy to deal with. I was within the 14 day return window and if they have one in the store you’ll get an immediate replacement if not they ship a replacement directly to your house or you can get it shipped to the store and come pick it up. Just depends on the stock in the store you go to.

    i know how dji works i have work there , if you are under warranty and you send it in they check it , if they say no fault found but you know there is a issue send it in 3 times , when dji get a drone with a issue afther 3 times they send you a new drone even if they did not find the isseu , hope it works out👍

    You have a damaged gimbal bro.. You should try to reinstall the firmware, that's should fix the problem if you didn't crash the baby Mini or something else prior that..
