My favourite thing about Devin Townsend is that people that don't understand music theory listen to his music and think he's a mad genius, and people that do understand music theory listen to his music and think "you mad genius".
Nah, I don't really think that. If Devin is your portal to poly-stylistic music, then I can see why you'd think he's a "mad genius." I just like his music.
I could listen to this guy talk for days. He's my idol. If I had a wish for me to gain any musicians talent, it would be his, hands down. The man is a musical *GAWD*
One of the things I appreciate most about Dev is his ability to truly not take himself seriously. Even in the sense of realizing something as simple as "I'm speaking way too quickly because I'm nervous, let me slow it down." People always same the same thing when meeting a lot of celebrities: "Oh they're just so normal and so down to earth!" But, I find that not to be true a lot of times. Dave seems REAL and to me that's the sickest thing of all. Okay I'm done being gushy. Move along :)
I agree with both you and @jotunblod, I appreciate his "realness" but anyone in his position would have an ego trip to some degree. From what I understand about him, he's done the "drugs, sex and rock and roll" thing, enjoyed it for what it was and has grown beyond that. I know you never actually "know" a celebrity as they are in their day-to-day lives, but I'd consider myself lucky to be one of the 75 people he looked forward to seeing at NAMM.
Empath is so absurdly good. I feel like it builds and builds the whole time, and by the time "Here Comes the Sun" comes around, I feel like I've never heard anything so moving and incredible.
Wow, the revelations at around 20:00 .... Never thought I would hear Devin say this... the control freak he is, his near perfect live shows with clicktrack and backing samples, even his video & light show to be synchronized with the clicktrack.... And now he wants to let that go and do different versions of his songs.... This will be very interesting to see in a few months when he's back on tour!
If you ever get the opportunity (and privilege) to meet Devin, I think you'll agree that this is such a great example of the experience. Devin is an absolutely amazing dude and is one of the most humble people I've ever encountered (period). Such an amazing human being on so many levels!
Getting deep with the concept of live performances and giving people something unique, not a backing track for each show and I'm loving it. Massive thanks for uploading!
@@WeWantYouToStay And Ziltoid. But I think only a few songs. Oh and Deconstruction, as far as I know. Planet of the Apes I'm pretty certain is played with a 7 string.
Dude´s a schizoid of the highest order , what were you waiting for ? Lucky he never had to go through the pressures of commercial success like Cobain did - had it been the case you would be lucky he hadn´t done this guitar clinic in Mandarin sporting a bikini and playing a 7 string brazilian berimbau .
Listening to an artist talk about their work, has always been something that gives me a chuckle. There are varying degrees of "taking oneself seriously", (the artists that actually make me belly laugh out loud) . Are the ones that say things that make absolutely No Sense. 11:40 Haha I love his face when he says how easy it is, I have a feeling there are plenty of metal artists and stuff out there who would never admit that with such joy on their face lol, such a down to earth guy so much to learn from Hevy Devy whether you're listening to his music and the words or just watching an interview with him or w/e, so excited for Empath! Woo!
@@Qwerty-ks8dn Genesis is more of a compilation of all the sounds you can expect from the album. But yes, I fear it may be too ambitious. But I prefer him going in that direction than trying to be more commercialized and mainstream
@@toxendon Normally I would agree with that, certainly true with other top musicians, but in recent years his weakest efforts have been his favourite projects (COC and Ki) whereas projects he considered "pressured into recording" are brilliant (Sky Blue) or good (Transcendence). It's almost as if he prefers the average stuff he makes, while underrating his best. He is very strange that way. He also made a big fuss over Ghost which is not that great, comparatively speaking. I can't predict Empath, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if it disappoints somewhat. I am sure it will have some amazing music, but overall it could be yet another hit-and-miss album which he overrated vastly. I am more interested in Moth, to be frank. Empath just seems to be a rehash of his entire career, which would be pointless. Genesis is certainly a rehash, a mosaic of tunes I've heard before from him. Genesis has no emotional depth, it's bombastic in a chewing-gum sort of way. It's nerd prog.
Devy's tuning saved guitar for me. I wasn't progressing at all learning stuff and trying to write in either standard or dropped tunings. I decided to learn some DTB stuff and couldn't do that either until I found out about this completely alien tuning. It just opened this massive door and loads of stuff clicked into place. I'm still rubbish at shredding but that Ziltoid sounding bit at around 11:30 is easy. Thow on some delay and reverb to make it spacey and you can mess around for hours :)
amazing man, OPENLY telling us How to Do what he does... LOVE you DEVIN!!! haha as a friend said once in a strapping young lad concert" "TAKE ME TO HEAVEN DEVIN" hahaha

Love seeing Devin being happy and smiling. Such a fun gentleman.
Good to see him crack a smile again. Dude has looked beat in recent interviews.
