Sucking and selling are two different things. Writing a jingle is formulaic and not hard. There are brilliant virtuosos, and brilliant bands who do not sell anything. I do think Nickelback are talented, though, and they receive a lot of hate. There are reasons for that, like how overproduced their later albums became. Their first records were great.

I think a lot of the hate stems around the way Chad Kroeger used to look. He just kind of looked like a poser. I actually never hated them, I also never loved them but I can certainly tolerate Nickelback and can sing along to “This is How You Remind Me”. I think as a band your lead singers look can dictate how popular/unpopular you are. It seems silly but I totally believe it’s true. It's just awfully weird to see how much hate can a white guy who looks like a man (no tattoos or earrings) and sings in a man's voice, not femmy or childish one, cause in the West these days. I believe those haters are the same sort of people that cried over Hillary's election failure. Anyway, I first heard them when I was at high school, and those guys have been cheering me up for 15 years now, so thanks a lot. And, what's remarkable, they still have not written themselves out.
