Cakewalk, by Bandlab is a free DAW (formerly SONAR), I use for my virtual sound checks. Its for Windows machines but I believe they released a Mac version just this year. Getting the driver setup right takes a quick second to figure out but it works good. I use it for multitrack recording too. As far as I have found it's the most full-featured free DAW available. There isn't much it can't do.
Hello thanks for the video. I’m struggling to find a virtual Soundcheck playback solution for my specific scenario. I’m using the Wing, sending 48 i/o to Logic through WDante. Up until there it’s good, I can monitor the recorded audio through the headphone jack or internal speaker in the Mac mini. But Now I’m struggling trying to send the raw audio back to wing via Dante, to everything individual channel it was recorded from, so that I can run virtual sound checks. If possible can you or anyone in the comments help clarify this, or lead me to another good video? Thank you.
I would sure like to see an example. We record our service in USB set to 2 track. Do I switch it to 32 track and plug the USB cable from the USB hooked to your laptop? Again example please.😉
Yes. You would plug a USB-type B cable to the Card in the back of the board, and connect the other end (of what ever USB type you need, commonly Type A) to the computer; and use a program to receive and record the 32 channels: such as Waves program.
Yes you need to record it in multitrack first not stereo. Then playback the tracks to the same channels and change the input blocks on the desk over to the USB card, which is so quick to do it on the tablet. X32 has it’s own multitrack record/playback card, but involves a dedicated cost. We had a few a spare Mac Mini laying around so the best of them became the multitrack device.
Thanks gang! So what I’m taking is that setting the board to 32 track is the audio interface and the program serves as the DAW. p.s. I still have to go through the training again since it has been upgraded.
Live sounds checks work if nothing changes. What do I mean by this? The mic position / distance etc from what is being mic'd. The guitarist / bassist / keyboardist is using the same instrument's. There is so many variables to live audio. I could go on and on. A virtual sound check doesn't tell you the audio path from the mic to the board is good etc. We always use a live sound check vs a virtual for this reason alone. Now where we use a virtual sound check is to set the band back in the audience and to give them a listen to the mix as well as solo there instrument. I like a band member to hear there individual sound. If they like the the tone / sound that is being projected out-front ... They play with confidence.
Sounds like a great strategy. And you make a good point - don't ditch live sound checks. I sure wouldn't. I just like to use virtual sound checks to work on fine tuning things without making all the band members wait.
I use virtual sound check all the time, at rehearsal, then play back later to get all the variables dialled in for each individual component, the service becomes a plug and play experience for the worship team. Then I’ll multitrack the service with a live performance and do the same. Then add each component to the library for building scenes.
I’ve always wanted to implement this for my church just due to me running sound and drumming at the same time during services. I’ve found a lot of ways to do this with apple computer with how to set it up but not for windows. Is there a way you could help with this to where I could do this and use the separate channels on the mixer to practice and do sound check? Thanks Chris
@@collabworship I know it can be done, but I can’t seem to get anything out of my PA to listen back and practice EQ. I was trying on Waves, but if it’s not supporting it that might be some of the issue. I set everything up enough to try and listen back but nothing.
Chris. Make sure the X32 is selected as the source in software, and probably the sound settings as well. So the signal chain goes from the desk to the software. We used to use Wavs, Tracks Live which was free and a bit basic, that’s gone now. So moved to using Logic Pro, it’s much easier.
We started using Logic Pro last year when Tracks Live (free) reached end of life and crashed on the laptop and mac mini. So glad it did as it forced us to seek another far superior option, Logic Pro. Logic Pro is so easy, record playback is all, no need to assign input and out put channels or having the sound repeat through the system if you leave the outputs assigned while going live. In Logic Pro we setup a 32 channel template , open it resave it with a new name, arm the channels we want to record and hit record, that's it. To play it back simply assign the X-32 USB card as inputs CARD 1-8, 9-16, 17-24, 25-32 and click play, lights start flashing.
Hey Jesse. I've not used the Wing, but I imagine the process is very similar to the X32. Here's a video from Behringer: ua-cam.com/video/gk7tgv3zMjo/v-deo.html
I’m scratching my head as to why anyone would need to do this. If you get the sound dialed in at the performance that you captured the audio, why not just save the preset in the board to use every time?
Virtual sound checks are a great way to experiment and do any extra fine-tuning that you either don't have time for during the event or just don't want to bother everyone with. It's a great way to get in some extra practice in a no-stakes environment as well.
I couldn't get our virtual soundcheck to work through Ableton, and then no signals were coming through the X32...then our worship director deleted the scene we had, and lost everything - all routings, all effects, all EQs, Comp, etc. Now we have to re-do everything...
#collaborateworship I record my worship band every Thursday at rehearsal..then Saturday i do always a virtual sound check for Sunday...I can't do it on Sunday because I had to change the routing for live streaming being output 5 and 6 a prefader live-streaming buses on card 1 and 2 (yes I know post fader is what you recommend but in my context pre fader is better...singers ) , anyways...also I have a limiter in this two channels for live streaming volumen...I would like to record on Sundays but I dont know how to have the streaming buses in Chanels 1 and 2 for the card as an user configuration and at the same time a multitrack recording in Logic when channel 1 is channel 1 in Logic...I can change the routing in the rehearsal but not on Sunday mornings..not sure if I explain myself correctly...Please any idea on this??Blessings from Cayman Islands
If you want to record Sunday live, stop using your USB card for live stream and get a digital interface like the Scarlett 2i2. Send house left right to a linked matrix pair and assign two outputs to the matrix. Send the outputs to the Scarlett which is now your USB interface to the streaming computer. Set the Scarlett LR inputs to minimum and bring up the Matrix till the indicator lights on the Scarlett start to flash green, occasionally orange but never red. Your internal USB card is now available to set as 32 channel send to your recording computer.
Have you ever run into the problem of the recorded tracks coming back into the board at a lower signal level than you sent them out? I've recorded to a DAW, but when I play them back through the X32, I'm having to raise the gain. Then when the band comes back to play, my gains are up too high. I've read something about this being due to the X32 using both digital and analog trim. Just wondering if you've noticed that issue or found a workaround.
Hey Brian - I've not had this problem. But a workaround would be to save a snippet with only HA Gain settings for each channel (live gain settings), and then recall the snippet after the virtual sound check.
#collaborateworship please could you help me achieve this. Currently my M32 midas board's USB port ment for multi-recording is not working any longer a d I can't seem to get one in my country . Tried to get it online but then the cost involve is much more and we aren't ready to but then I really wanna do this and also help my Livestream sound get better. How else can I record milti-wise .

Great video! It's hard to practice as a sound tech, but virtual sound check is the biggest jump forward for audio education as a trade.
