The only thing I've yet to get in trouble over, and that's applying noise gates on channels during a set. This only happened once where I started applying it at the beginning. Since I add it slowly, it wasn't noticeable. I've learned to do major changes during sound check and before the set begins. There was one time when a vocalist asked me to include reverb in the monitors since the stage was in a pasture. Feedback started to occur, but thankfully we managed to cut back quickly.
I have an awkward console practice situation too... First month of experience in sound at my church, didn't knew anything, just to turn channels on and move faders. We had an Yamaha 01V. The pastor was preaching and I started to test EQ in a muted channel, just to see how the graphik work. In some point I adjusted the pastor volume and it automatically selected his channel, but I didn't see. Than I returned to messing around with EQ, but this time in the Pastor's channel! I lifted a frequency and drag it. Ow, it was embarrassing. After that, I ensure to disable the auto select setting hahahaha.
My heart jumps in my throat just reading your story. So rough! And auto-select is definitely a surprise... it's like "I just bumped the fader! Chill out!!!"
Do you need instructions on setting it up on your console? Comment below if there's a particular console you'd like a tutorial for, and I'll see if I can round up the gear to make it!
I know you went to school here. But you’re a Preds fan too??? Very cool! I just started watching you about a week or so ago and you are absolutely great at teaching audio and sharing relatable and teachable information. I just bought a A&H Qu-16c you’re videos have helped me so much and you keep it interesting. Thank you for sharing all of this knowledge and experience.
Great idea! I've got some more Smaart videos coming down the line. Til then, here's a livestream I did on the topic a while back ua-cam.com/video/B5j9t1JwfJ4/v-deo.html
I know this was a few years ago but hoping you could still help. I have a Soundcraft SI Impact and I want to set up for virtual soundcheck. Can you help me out?? I run 32 channels out with the Madi card to Logic Pro x. Hoping you can help me set this up.
Have you thought about releasing the multi-track stems that you are using in these videos so they can throw it in the virtual soundcheck and work on the exact audio files you are working on?
I have, but getting permission from the artist and songwriters/publishers to use in a video demonstration is different than permission to distribute multitracks. Staying out of legal trouble is a real concern. I don’t have the money to survive getting sued. I have access to lots of files, but the publishing permission is the toughest to get, even if I get artist/performer permission.
Attaway Audio that is a real concern... what can you advise about my situation.. i have a soundcraft ui16 ...im trying to learn how to mix .. how and what should i use so i can learn to adjust different parameters on different instrument and possibly as whole mix...i can play instrument except keyboards.. do know people that play instrument but i really just want to learn it and practice... hard to do when theres folks around.. Thanks for evrything you do! You are blessing a lot of folks with your talent
Speaking of TF series, there is one thing I don't really like about it, that's you cannot assign any Aux Buses to the Main Stereo Buses, you have to route those into the Martix Bus instead
Can you explain how to replay recorded multitracks and remix them on the l200 and especially show how to route them via Dante if it's a stereo channel like Piano left and right and how to get this at the channel where I want it to be to a stereo channel?
The L200 doesn't have the control section with more dedicated function buttons that the L300 and L500 have, only the multitouch screen. The only time I "miss" that is when I want to bypass gates quickly, but that's not a deal breaker for me. I actually prefer the L200's fader tile layout, with the 3 groups of 12 straight across. I keep my VCAs and Stems in the middle, my vocals on the right, and switch between drums/bass layer and the guitars/keyboards layer on the left. The other limit you'll run into is the number of channel paths, but that's another limitation that hasn't held me back.
USB return has the results of the mic preamp already, so if you need to use the digital trim during virtual sound check, make a note to dial back the preamp a touch next time you're back on the live inputs. And make sure your band knows, since their monitors are likely fed from that.
I’m trying something new. I want to record the service in logic and be able to virtual sound check though the week. My problem I can only get 4 or 5 tracks to arm for recording at 1 time. When I select more than the “limit” it deselects one of the other channels. Running a soundcraft si impact. Logic sees all the usb channels from the mixer. Help please.
Haha! Good question! Because the person who jacked up the concrete to run conduit under the floor in 1983 wanted it there. And no one has had the willpower to pull up the carpet, jack up more concrete, run new conduit and cable, and pour more concrete over top, and then replace the carpet... between Sundays. But other than that, I’m not sure. 😂

Did you ever make a video about how to set up smart with a transform?
I did! It's right here. You can skip ahead to around 9 minutes of you don't want the long-winded intro ua-cam.com/video/B5j9t1JwfJ4/v-deo.html
Very amusing thanks dude
Do a step by step demo for smaart

Fantastic video
Mixing a Sunday service is easy. Just turn everything off, go home and enjoy your Sunday. Easy!
That's one way to get time off

Today we use Yamaha Tf5, that comes with Nuendo Live! Very useful to VSC.
I can't emphasize just how incredible being able to practice is. Awesome that it comes bundled!

Attaway, what brand of digital mixer that are you using in this video?
This is a SSL L200. It's very nice
Does it have a huge diffrences with the model L500?
The L200 doesn't have the control section with more dedicated function buttons that the L300 and L500 have, only the multitouch screen. The only time I "miss" that is when I want to bypass gates quickly, but that's not a deal breaker for me. I actually prefer the L200's fader tile layout, with the 3 groups of 12 straight across. Now what happens with gain instrucción? Do we set up usb return the same as channel gain?
USB return has the results of the mic preamp already, so if you need to use the digital trim during virtual sound check, make a note to dial back the preamp a touch next time you're back on the live inputs. And make sure your band knows, since their monitors are likely fed from that.
@@AttawayAudio thank you!!

Hahaha we’ll just use the ipad app then .... hehehahhe
what does moducate means on a reverb ?
modulate means a variable pitch shift on the reverb tail... it can make it sound bigger, or be distracting if it's not subtle.
