  • Hard cast lead 223, powder coated, 2500 fps, Ballistic Gel Test.. WHAT HAPPENS. Might surprise you! Collecting and examining cast lead powder coated bullets from ballistic gel is teaching me a lesson! A lot more to come on the subject! Is this for plinking or self defense?

    Awesome tests, really enjoyed several of your videos , I am in the process of casting .223 and 7.62n x 39 to load. In the past I have loaded painted bullets " rustoleoum high endurance paint" but now I am going to use your powder coating process. Thank you for the loading data on the .223 loads.

    Hey Elvis, when they check for gun fingerprint, they fire bullets into a container of water, as not to damage the bullet. It would be interesting to see how the rifling effects the powder coat.
    I'm in the UK, I do cast, powder coat and shoot, but we have restriction as to where we can shoot, not like you in your back yard.
    You do some awesome experiments to gather info. Keep them up.

    23.0grs H4895
    B2O 1.8900
    LC brass
    CCI #400 SRP
    Will indeed run in a 20” rifle platform as well
    My data is as follows
    Min 2361
    Max 2474
    Avg 2414
    SD 50.9
    ES 113
    It created a 1” group at 80 yards I did have vertical stringing. But at 80 yards to create a functioning cast 223 I’m definitely happy with it. I will say the H4895 is a dirty mess of a powder.

    Amazing...2 thumbs up on the experiment. In my opinion, I would use .223 as a self defense over the 300 blackout. That 300 looks like itll go through the body and a wall into the next room over hahaha..powerfull. With your experiment here, seems to me that the .223 is safe enough to put a bad guy down and not worry about harming anyone else. And the powder coat stuck better than I expected. Great Job man. Thanks for putting this out there. Be safe.

    Uhhhhh, I was not expecting that kind of performance from a cast pill. I've been contemplating buying that Lee 22 cal mold and casting some up. I was wondering how that powder coating would hold up. Now I know. Now some questions: do you know the Brinell hardness of your bullets as cast? Or what was your recipe as far as lead-to-tin/antimony per pound? How'd the inside of your barrel look? Any signs of leading or powder coating? I, personally, would NOT hesitate to use that Lee cast bullet for home defense. I also think that folks in apartments might benefit due to the lack of overpenetration. I know, this is anecdotal at best, but it shows some promise for future load development. I was mildly encouraged by the almost immediate permanent wound channel created by that bullet. In hopes of creating an inexpensive home defense round, I'd experiment with different velocities and see if that changes the wound cavity in the gel blocks. Thanks for the vid. It gives great info and food for thought!!!

    Hi Elvis,
    I love you videos. You remind me of my Uncle David. I love the content, your commitment to the hobby, and the way you express yourself. I stumbled on to your channel when I was researching how to jacket bullets. I have a really fun 6.5 Creedmore. But it's expensive to shoot. So I started to research everything about bullets. I would love to learn how to construct every part. From bullet, to case, to primer. Because the last ammunition crisis we had had caused me to not shoot for over a year. Bullet wise I think you're on the right track. A lot of people want you to push that bullet faster. But excessive velocity can negetively impact accuracy. Especially since I notice that you said you have a 1 in 8 twist rate for a barrel that is at 16 inches. There is only so much you are going to get out of a carbine with a slower twist rate. You could have the perfect bullet. But if your platform is for up close work. Then you will not do so well at longer distances due to its moa. I have a 1 in 6 at 20 inch AR10 in 6.5 creedmore. It's way more gun than I really need for the forrests in Michigan. But its really fun to thread hole through hole at 100 and sometimes 200 with my friends at their range. But the cost is killing the fun. So you inspire me. Thank you for your wonderful channel. :D

    These were your powder coated wheel weight lead cast bullets, right? A lot more expansion than I'd have ever thought. I'd have to say that are worthy of consideration for HDW. I know someone out there will say, but the F.B.I. wants greater penetration and four layers of denim first.... I'd rather see all of the energy imparted on the target and no pass throughs.

    Good job as usual. As far as would it make a good defensive round, you could do a test with a typical 5.56 bullet that would be used and then compare. I've been buying Hornady 55gr soft points for general purpose use, for instance. I would say it wouldn't meet the FBI criteria because of barriers and I don't think it penetrated far enough. Doubt that it would shoot through a windshield or car door and perform very well. However, I'm not going to stand in front of it and wouldn't worry about it if I couldn't get jacketed bullets in a SHTF situation. A good plinking bullet looks like.

    Your videos are great. Feels like I'm there with you. Your 223 lead did not surprise me. I use to shoot a 223 swaged bullet. I used a 22 rimfire case as a jacket and soft lead inside. You could only shoot them 3000 fps or under, any faster and they would explode in flight. If you shot a ground hog they would only penetrate 3 inches and Make a 6 inch entree hole. Very ugly. When lead, even harder lead gets some good speed it explodes on impact. I found that a gun with slower twist rate is much better when use homemade jacket bullets for the 223. I have a savage 110e with a 1to 14 and it loves these types of bullets. Thanks for a cool video.

      elvis ammo from looking at your gel test. This bullet of yours is at it breaking point. I mean if you pick up your speed at all you will notice it on the gel. You get to 2800 fps I sure hope you make a video. Try shooting a water jug. All the energy go's in the jug, even a small one.

      @elvisammo  8 років тому

      +Farmer Dude357 yea no doubt. . that bullet went to 17 inches and the energy from a 55 gr bullet knocked 40 lb of gel that was stuck real good to the rest off.. i.ll do the video real soon ... the last one at2500 fps the bullet retained almost all its weight! we'll see ...

    The flat nose bullets will travel through in a straight line.The pointed bullets will deviate.Try cutting off the pointed tips and flattening the larger bullets and they should travel straight like the 223's.Flat nose bullets have much better penetration than rounded or pointed bullets.

    Hey Buddy.. Good video content dude. 'Cork screw' is it with the Subs, A gyro will keep on it's axis as long as it has enough spin to run true and stable. Once that stabilization is gone it looses it ability to stabilize it will dump its energy uncontrollably right there and that is what is happening to the bigger heavier bullets. The Barrel twist rate is just enough to stabilize those, But they have a added affect on impact, vary destructive. Good video dude and as always God bless dude. Thosaxe777

      elvis ammo It's all good dude.. That round was made as a CQB round for clearing out a room in short range. The Barrel twist rate is made to do that. That way the bullet has maximum efficiency when the bullet impacts. The Early AR-15's in the Vietnam War were in a twist rate of 1 in 14 for that vary reason. Vary destructive with FMJ 55grain bullets.

    Impressive... I hope that you can duplicate that with a KNOWN alloy... or KNOWN brinell hardness. Results are likely to vary with velocity and hardness. Would you like to share the "bullet alloy information" used in expansive 2500 fps 223 blue bullet loads ?? ... alloy metals used by percentages or weights or ratios would be helpful to those who wish to duplicate these results.

    Fantastic! I am very impressed with that 55 gr 223 bullet! My next question is, how fast can you push it and how accurate is it? Do you think it can go any faster than 2500 fps? Loving your videos! Great info!

    • @elvisammo
      @elvisammo  8 років тому +8

      Hey CountryBoyPrepper..... i know this is something your working on too. (on your channel) unofficially, I have pushed this bullet over 2800 fps. no leading and without deforming the bullet. So I have no reason to think I cant make a respectable round at that speed. When making a accurate round fps becomes secondary . so I stopped at 2500 fps where this thing seemed to like it. Im getting under 2 inch groups at 50 and under 4 inch at 100 yrds with my rifle and my shooting ability. with very little magnification. 1in8 twist 16 inch. A little more work and some slight changes might be all it takes to improve. bullet depth, crimp, ect. But with this info from this testing it has turned the way we think of cast lead on it's head. Bottom line is with powder coated bullets . We need to think differently about how we load them. Maybe a little closer to fmj. in the data books... with some caution. work up loads and watch for pressure signs....For now I shoot cast for plinking and practice. But I like plinking and practicing.... so I save tons of money! I'll bet ya that this is better than factory if using it for home defense...

    • @CountryBoyPrepper
      @CountryBoyPrepper 8 років тому +5

      Thanks Elvis! This is very exciting info for me. I can't wait to get my Lee mold! I'm figuring I will be able to reload 223 for around $.12/round (primer and powder)! And it looks like I wouldn't be losing much in performance. They look plenty adequate for plinking and practice and as a last resort could be pressed in to other roles. I think powder coating is going to get a lot of people in to casting there own bullets that otherwise never would have. As FortuneCookie45LC says, "Game Changer."

    You ought to try shooting 230 grain missiles at a couple 5 gallon buckets full of sand lined up I shoot some pretty big rifles that send out around 2100 feet per second and they only seem to make it a little less than half way and every bit of lead I shoot at it soft point that might stop those missiles I would give you the ability to catch one soft point I dig out of my 5 gallon bucket I melt down and reuse but they are mushroomed

    I think by the info from other tests..those rounds would be a great home defense round. The .223 rounds I’m referring to. The big 230 trainees are a bit to unwieldy and not dependable.

    I do not know why it's such a shock to people when a flat nose bullet does so much damage. Elmer Keith designed his bullet back in the thirties knowing that the optimum hunting bullet was a flat nose bullet. When it's fired out of a pistol the advantage is that it does not have to expand like a hollow point. I've been using Keith bullets for a long time. They are one shot drop. On deer. 2nd off. When you take this concept and have a flat point at a smaller diameter bullet moving it much faster speeds, you wind up with the same results. The only difference is a hard bullet will actually mushroom we're in a pistol there's no need to mushroom. The concussion happens in front of the big meplat... recommended me Platt on a pistol bullet is at least 70% of the overall diameter. I believe the Keith bullet with something like 77%. When it comes to a rifle bullet however the concussion Works in unison with the speed and nasty things happen :-) I've been watching your videos Elvis they are informative. But because you talk kind of slow sometimes they dragged out too much and you repeat yourself a lot. You might want to edit them a little better. Cut out all the dead stuff it's not needed or you may wind up losing some people because they lost interest. That would be a shame because you are taking a lot of time to do these very informative videos. You got to keep their interest bud. Rock on

  • @TimKollat
    @TimKollat 7 років тому

    those 300blk giants looked like they yawed hard, did a either a 180 and exited the top backwards or they did a complete 360 and exited head first. The 55gr 223 looks almost like a 55gr M193 going over 3000 fps, entered, fragmented and penetrated about 12-13". I don't think you can ask for any better performance for that 223. It would be a perfect little white tail deer and pig slayer.

    • @Iceberg050
      @Iceberg050 4 роки тому

      Andy Stampfli With PC’d cast bullets I start with the same weight Jacketed bullet low end load and work up. I’ve shot lots of PC’d bullets in 556 and 300AAC and I’ve never had leading. The bore might look dirty but a wire brush down the bore 2 times and it’s clean. It’s dust and not lead fouling.

    • @andystampfli9127
      @andystampfli9127 4 роки тому

      @@Iceberg050 so if I used w748 around 26gr I can push 55gr powder coated bullets around 2900fps with no problems or gas checks... I'm not calling you a liar, believe me, but I'd like to see the load data before I try it. It's just sounds to simple and easy to be true. ( I.e. no load data since it would cost them business) but I don't like the idea of putting my rifle in a "test" to see.

    • @Iceberg050
      @Iceberg050 4 роки тому

      Andy Stampfli I start at the low end but 2900 fps is not something I’m comfortable with. I push them about 2600 fps and a good PC bullet with a GC has been good for me. I shoot them out of a 10 1/2 inch barrel over my chronograph.. My 300 AAC only runs at 2340 fps jacketed 110 gr bullets, 155gr PC/GC at 1040 fps in a 10 inch barrel. I’ve been reloading since 1968 and I used to push bullets 1 grain over max load in 30-06 but not anymore. Accuracy is where you find it in a load, not the fastest bullet. When you get older you get wiser, or you get dead!

      hey Karen Mills! !!! I was hoping to hear from ya soon! Now that's a fine range report! : ) One thing I'd like to know is what powder and powder charge, and what over all length you used for the 223.? I'm glad to see that stupid oven didn't make it for long! and the stupid powder give ya a nice colorful explosion! !!! : ).. the WHY, 300 blackout explanation! first of all I do not have an AK.. and I should have one since it is a very fine rifle .... And I would probably offer a different explanation of why, if I owned one. So I'll give ya a list of benifits I know of. 1. weight 2. versatility of bullet weight and charges. 3. couple that with having a rifle that uses the exact same parts as your ar15 . That's a big +. 4. did I mention the same mags. you get the point! but just like many other calibers, some are used for much the same purpose. .. And everyone's purpose is different. with the question WHY... Your point is well taken! : ) . you guys are doing an awesome job kicking but and taking names. I admire that! !! you've become the Angels vlog of elvis ammo! !!!! ; ) the very finest to ya!!!

    Hey man, those 223 rounds are perfect. I would call em done. They perform fantastically. I must ask though, I know you were crazy excited, but you MUST shoot the yellow, as the blue and the red performed surprisingly differently, you simply have to try them ALL again and try to repeat those results... and film it for me to enjoy of course too! As for your 300 blackout... I have some suggestions. Its possible the alloy is too hard and not mushrooming fast enough at low velocity? OR, maybe drill a a small hollow point in it with a center drill on a lathe. At subsonic a 2mm center drill would be just fine I guess. You don't need to squeeze it hard, i do copper jacketed solids and hunt with em no worries. I reckon if they were faster they would mushroom quicker, but its kind of like they are just taking ages to expand... or maybe even tumble. Don't know. I would have hoped the expansion would have started much earlier, and you'd have a captured bullet? I can't wait for my 243 molds to arrive!
