I only own 1 out of 4 of these instruments but really love the back and forth vibe you guys have. As someone who relies on podcasts to break up the monotony of my work day the idea of you two doing a production based podcast / youtube video together weekly, bi weelky or even monthly would certainly be something to look forward to.
I really love the chat about workflows and the process behind the music. I always feel there is so much content about gear and whatnot, but I'm eager to hear how everyone's actually _making_ the music.
I do use a similar setup (Digitone+ Analog rythm) but got a Torso T1 instead of an Oxi to sequence my Digitone in the same way as Surco does the Syntakt (pattern=sound kits). It can do all the euclidean stuff Osi does, and much much more. Has a very nice interface without a screen, it is so immediate and tactile. Also, has 16 touring machine for each track that can randomize any parameter to generate infinite pattern/melodies and can sequence 14 CCs per track with the randomizing/touring machine feature. It was very inspiring to see Surco perform with a similar setup, I still cannot be as fluid as him so I didn't kown if I could actually do what he is doing with this setup. Good to know that I can get there if I just practice more because the pieces are all there.
This video made me buy the OXi 1. It will be in the post later today. I'm playing live in room 2 of a Ben Sims gig and I cannot wait to use this for live improv.
Two thorough gentlemen sharing their best views. I love Surco’s workflow as everything is done on the fly. No predetermined patterns, yet there is constant change 👌👌👌👌👌 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 The magic is the OXee ❤️❤️ Please meet more often 😄
YES. I think this video was helpful because I was intuitively looking at something inbetween the two poles of complete improvisation and song structure. Seeing these two very perspectives was very helpful to figure out where I fit in the middle.
Loved that! Thank you so much. More collab's EZ. EZ Great interview cadence, zooming in with questions or ideas, then letting the guest run for a bit. Surco glad you are explaining your method only the way you can. Good luck with the show tonight. You got this. :)
Agreeing with other comments - really enjoyed this talk as well as the last one Surco was on! The level of useful, nitty gritty, real life experience information is unlike any other videos I’ve seen on youtube
Thought of a somewhat hidden performance feature on the Digitone when discussing the benefits of the OXI sequencer scale modes. If you hold PTN while pressing up and down, you can shift your entire pattern notes by intervals. Also, you can transpose individual tracks by going into the “Music” icon menu and using the H knob to transpose the notes in your sequence. Hope this helps someone!
I am still upset with Elektron bc despite what the manual says (or used to say...not sure, they said they were going to change the manual after I pointed this out) that the arp is supposed to stay in the scale that is set when you offset individual notes in the arp screen, like it does on the OT AND the A4.. instead offset is chromatic, which means it is very difficult to change the arp using the offset on the fly, and stay in scale ..So clearly it can be implemented, and they meant to implement it, even put it in the manual...but they just did not do it. What you read below does not work and it sucks, because being able to change the offsets in the arp and stay in scale would be super useful! And it CANNOT be that hard to implement. Pretty ridiculous of Elektron to implement it on their expensive products, put it in their digi manual, and then say that actually this has never worked and is an error in the manual...they said they would pass along the "feature request" to the devs...this ain't no request! This is something that was supposed to be implemented and in the manual. I have read 3 year old posts saying the same thing as I experienced when contacting elektron...so many updates and they can;t fix this one thing that works on 2 of their other machines? "9.7.6 OFFSET Offset selects the offset (note) value of the chosen arpeggiator step in semi-tones. The offset is from the original note trig. The TRK KEY SCALE and TRK KEY NOTE settings found in the NOTES SETUP menu affects the note values of the arpeggiated notes. 1. Press [LEFT] or [RIGHT] to select which arpeggiator step to offset. 2. Use DATA ENTRY knob E to set the offset. 3. Press [DOWN] to deacivate an arpeggiator step. Press [UP] to activate an arpeggiator step that has been deactivated"
@@5lanediver Not sure what you mean? I use this all the time as a mini-sequencer within the sequencer. I agree it would be nice to have a arp that conforms to a scale, but as described in the manual, it works as intended? Again, I agree it would be nice if this was the case…I just never expected it based on how I interpreted the manual.
Surco spitting some truthes about techno here. It can be quite hard to grasp without having been to proper club nights in a city with a half decent scene. If you want to learn how to 'make techno' and understand some of the history and philosophy behind it from some absolute legends, I recommend checking out John Selway's Techno Saturday from 343 Labs.
Great video! This is really helpful for stuff I’m working on. So just to be sure… Oxi is the master clock? There are no PC commands going. If he wants to change his “kit” of sounds he just manually changes the pattern on the Syntakt or changes the kit on the Rytm. Does that sound right?
This video has been a real gamechanger for my approach. When you showed this workflow of sound design and interchanging by improvisation between tone kits/palettes... that was just what I was searching for! For me, I think the Oxi and Polyend Play are ideal for this kind of approach. I think the Octatrack could too in theory but I think having the visual layout of multiple tracks like the Play and Oxi is a big deal for me. Just sequence from a main source with generative algorithms and probabilities and then all the other gear can be treated like tone boxes/kits to mess around with. I think sequencing notes through multiple Elektron boxes simultaneously with program changes made me rigidly feel like everything had to be pre-programmed and arranged when I just wanted to create on the fly with my pre-programmed sound designs. Thanks so much for this very insightful compare and contrast! @@SURCOlive
Regarding using the Syntakt as a synth: Maybe not the flavour you are looking for, but the Waldorf Blofeld is 16 parts multi-timbral in multi mode (with up to 25 voices). The size is very similar.
Another good option if you gel with the sound and workflow. I still prefer the variety of sound and fast workflow of the Syntakt, but Blofeld is a solid synth for the price for sure
Love this! You two are great. So Elektron is known for probably the best sequencers in the business. With adding the Oxi aren't you taking a major feature away from this setup. Could you do the same pretty easily without the Oxi? Keep up the great work you two. When are you returning the favor and join Eric here in Colorado?
I would love to have Matthew out here soon!! I feel that adding the OXI One brings features the Elektrons aren't capable of doing (Euclidean sequencing and quantization to key with random generation of notes and triggers). The Elektrons are still number one for sequencing internally with the ability to parameter lock all the parameters of the synths, samplers, and FX. They make an unbelievable team!
Love this video! I have an Oxi, Perkons, Syntakt, and other synths and drums but I feel like I am missing the mixer to control the flow. Anyone’s thoughts on a Oktatrak or a DJ style mixer ?
I have a digitone and digitakt. Could getting a syntax replace them both if I got a RYTM as well? Rumble bass is a huge groove changer, love dynamic percussions in the mix too. This live talk gets me inspired and excited.
Will the syntakt key quantise random incoming midi notes? [Edit] now I've watched this I realise that the OXi 1 is the sequencer that is sending key quantised midi notes to the syntakt.
Is there an Elektron box that can basically be a Prophet replacement? Obviously the Elektron boxes have their own sound but what I mean is a synth that has a full synth voice with the ability to adjust all the parameters one would want to adjust. I think the Digitone is exactly what I am talking about but I already have the Korg Opsix and I can only handle having one fm synth in my life. Would the Syntakt or Digitakt work for this?
The Digitone is super cool. I'm still learning it but it's coming along. I'm getting musical results at each level of my learning. Also working on the Octatrack. Steeper learning curve there. Moments of great joy and discovery punctuated by brutal bouts of manual reading and scouring UA-cam for tips. Back to the Digitone: It seems like you as you become more proficient, the cool sounds and music that you make rise along with your skills. But the musicality is there from right from the start. It's immediately listenable and becomes more so as you progress. Cheers! And enjoy the ride...
Do you have a link to a video where it demonstrates how to send CC messages to the Syntakt FX track to trigger sidechaining?l like you mentioned at 54:00? Why not just use the tiggers on the FX track itself?
“It won’t sidechain” talking about the AR, in case this helps someone: I sidechain within the A4mk2 by hooking up the CV out to the control input and it does perfect ducking that I assign to amp volume or anything else (without using up an LFO!).
