  • If you've never had the pleasure of seeing a Stanhopea you are missing something. Incredible and incredibly different! The fragrance is spicy and strong and capable of filling an entire greenhouse. I would like to dedicate this video to George Solyanis who was a friend of mine for many years and was fortunate enough to get the award on this wonderful plant!

      I have seen Stan. tigrina available from time to time and they aren't terribly difficult to grow and bloom.

    Wow. I’m impressed at the size. My favourite orchid is the stanhopea. I live in Sydney Australia and Stanhopeas are out now. Nothing the size of yours though. The fragrance is outstanding in my opinion even though the flower is short lived. Thanks for sharing. 🇦🇺🇦🇺

    It is amazing. Sort of an alien space critter, but I think it embodies all that is bizarre and beautiful and attracts us to orchids!

    Wade, this is what keeps us going in raising orchids.
    That stanhopea is fantastic.
    I am trying to keep one alive for a year.
    Dropped all its leave and I took it out of the basket, put it in a cut down soda bottle with holes and wet spagh. and it has just grown out 4 green spikes.
    We shall see.
    It is a lot of work just keeping it alive.
    No greenhouse so I am at a disadvantage, but in So. Calif.
    I grown most outdoors.

      Keep it moist and in bright shade. As you can see in the video, you need to move it to some sort of basket when it becomes blooming size so the inflorescences can come out the bottom. Best of luck with it!!!

    I think I have one of these. When I say think! I mean I lost the tag from the pot years ago and without seeing it flower I cannot identify it. My plant was in a poor condition to, since moving it to the greenhouse it has started to really pick. I guess we will have to wait until it blooms. good video, thanks for sharing this beautiful flower.

    I just purchased this orchid. Can you help me as to what type of medium I should pot it in? I live in northern Ohio. It will be in my home in a west facing window. Hanging from my ceiling studs. I would appreciate any help. It’s too beautiful to pass up on. Thx. Love your channel and knowledge. Thank you.

    Wow! What a stunning and wild beauty! It's so weird and awesome too, almost like an alien species. It's a shame it lasts for just 3 days. Such an amazing bloom. And, those oncidiums in flower behind her at 2:30 are impressive and so beautiful! So many blooms!

    • @wadesorchids7219

      It's fading now but I actually got 4 days of bloom on it. The Oncidiums are 2 varieties of Colmanara Wildcat.

    Mesmerizing... I love love love Stanhopeas but I have just two plants that do not want to flower! Any advise? I have both of the plants metal wire in basket with sphagnum and bark, lots of water and fertilizer during the growing season, in winter I let them dry more sonce I don't have higt temperature in the greenhouse.
    I got my S. florida from a south american seller, bare rooted as they use to sell their plants... it had grown well for the past 2/3 years since my father forgot the plant under the sun... it is now recovering, but i believe it was badly set back. The other is S. anfracta... it was supposed to be flowering size but still, after two years, no spike! Maybe it take a lot to get use to a new environment?
    Btw, love those plastic basket! Where can I get them?
    Thanks for sharing Wade! Can't wait to see all those spikes in bloom! :)

    Glorious! beautiful flower. I habe one of thos3 but hasn't flowered for me yet. How often did you fertilise? do you let it dry between watering? Thanks for sharing.

    • @wadesorchids7219
      @wadesorchids7219  8 років тому

      I try to fertilize once/week mid spring through early fall but I don't always do it quite that often. Nothing gets fertilized in Dec. and Jan. The rest of the time I fertilize every two weeks. In other words, the more sun and the the longer the day, the more fertilizer. For watering, I water it almost every day during summer. In winter it may slow to twice a week. Whatever it takes to keep it moist.

    Beautiful bloom Wade, I'm in the same boat as some of the other commenters have one , but no bloom spikes yet ,this is my first full summer growing , hopefully blooms before fall.
    quick question you were kind enough when I was looking for a Psychopsis last fall to refer me to a grower friend of yours .. purchased a beautiful plant with 1 spike now have 2 so doing well , however the leaves had the reddish modeling on them, now they are all green
    is that characteristic of the plant or needs more/less sun ??? I fertilize couple times a month.. appreciate your thoughts... Thanks Mat M

      I have heard of this happening with certain hybrids. I have Psy. Hildos 'Mendenhall' FCC/AOS. My plant has always retained dense mottling no matter if in shade or bright light. I'd concentrate on providing optimal conditions for its health and see what happens in the next year or so. I wish I could help you more.

    • @immckeeuc
      @immckeeuc 8 років тому

      Thanks Wade appreciate your quick reply, should have included mine is a Hildos 'Mendenhall' also
      live in the Portland OR area lots of cloudy days , think I'll try a little more sun exposure.. see if that makes a difference.. plant had 5 mature leaves and multiable smaller ones. had about 60% mottling , color was not as rich as your plant, over the winter slowly turned green .. thanks again Mat M

      or oncidium sharry baby is most fragrant than Stanhopea tigrina

    • @wadesorchids7219
      @wadesorchids7219  7 років тому

      Well, I don't know if it's THE most fragrant orchid. It is an amazing smell.

    • @alejandroperezpadron8927
      @alejandroperezpadron8927 7 років тому

      Wade's Orchids And if we compare the sharry baby with stanhopea which would have greater scope in terms of fragrance? Or maybe another kind of orchid comes to mind?

    • @wadesorchids7219
      @wadesorchids7219  7 років тому +1

      The Stanhopea's fragrance is much more powerful than Sharry Baby. When I walked into the greenhouse, the Stanhopea was all I could smell. It is very rich and spicy.
