  • In the Gaia Zoo, at the Lomako’s troop there is a male gorilla named Loango. He is the brother of the late silverback Makula. I saw a male gorilla this thin for the first time, and his nephew Mosi is also very thin. I'm not sure what the reason is, but Makula looked very robust as a silverback in the photos. Perhaps someone who knows them can tell me why they are so thin. I don't think this is a normal physique. Mosi is already 14 years old but looks like he's 8 or 9. I am very worried about the newly born Makongo and hope he grows up healthy.
    In GaiaZOO, a baby gorilla Making was born on April 9th. This marks the first birth of a gorilla in nearly ten years at the Kerkrade NL.
    The father of this baby gorilla, Lomako, arrived in Kerkrade in the spring of 2022. He took over the leadership role after the passing of Makula, who died in June 2021. This is Lomako's first offspring. As for the mother, Tamidol, this is her second baby.
    The baby is a boy👦, his name is Makongo.

    Love to Loango. This conservation is not conservation. Castration is not the answer. When will humanity mature and make responsible decisions. If the true intention is to care for endangered species the actions taken are not done with compassion. Thank you gorilla friend Charlotte for sharing Loro Parque a wonderful environment for bachelor silverbacks. It gave me hope in humanity to see these gorillas so well cared for . I suppose humans must learn from their mistakes. And glad there is a platform to speak up on behalf of all primates. We can learn from these gorillas who are gentle and strong. Instinctive and yet learning to adapt in captivity. I dont go to zoos anymore. But my heart loves these gorillas and will speak up on their behalf. I am not expert but I do know love and compassion goes a long way.

      @@AllThingsGorillaI found this information when I was researching side effects of castration in Gorillas. Physical changes: There may be physical changes due to the altered hormone levels, such as reduced muscle mass and changes in body composition.
      Potential health issues: Castration can lead to an increased risk of certain health problems, such as bone density loss or cardiovascular issues, due to the reduction in testosterone.

    I would assume it’s because he has been nurtured. I know for a while nurturing male gorillas was considered an answer to an over abundance of males with no where to place them. I think a lot of countries are now leaning more towards bachelor groups instead.

    • @KathyPrendergast-cu5ci
      @KathyPrendergast-cu5ci 2 місяці тому +3

      Yes; there’s a young male gorilla at Twycross Zoo in England, Shufai, who’s been neutered, presumably so he can keep on living with his family troop (mother, father, grandmother, and an unrelated adult female) indefinitely, because for whatever reason he’s not considered suitable for a SSP breeding program. It’s a rather controversial thing but keep in mind we do it routinely to our own dogs and cats without it having and effect on their health or quality of life. The only alternatives for him would eventually be having to live alone, which is unnatural for a gorilla, or living permanently in a bachelor troop. I guess they weigh these choices by considering what’s best for the troop, as well as for the individual gorilla. Losing a troop member can be very traumatizing for them.

      @KathyPrendergast-cu5ci I don't know if Loango's thinness is solely due to being neutered🥲. If it is, then being neutered harms them not only by preventing them from having their own offspring but also affects their health😔. This is the first time I've seen a gorilla so thin, and I can't express how shocked I was at the time😱.

      @@AllThingsGorilla Yes, I doubt that too. Gorillas are critically endangered. Plus no other animals look emancipated after neutering. He looks like he has some sort of genetic disorder (and his nephew) I have a feeling that may be why he was neutered. So he couldn’t pass on any genetic issues. I can’t imagine this would be done otherwise.

    Looking further down the comments the general consensus is him being neutered. This is so sad. The only "good" thing, (and I say this very loosely) he gets to stay with his family. But when you see Lomako or anyone of the other magnificent and powerful males, it's a travesty. It's devastating. I, like many others look at the bachelor groups and would love for all of them to have their own females, but bachelor groups are far more preferable than poor Loango's fate. I too would be worried about any younger males and Makongo. 💖💖🦍(I love love gorillas) but not this.

      Seeing Loango, I feel that gorillas in bachelor troops like Lengai, Meru, Monza, Upala, Akiki, and Ngoro are much happier than Loango, even though they don't have mates like him. They can live and play with other gorillas, have beautiful backs, and become real silverbacks, rather than being thin and weak like him.🤔️

      @@AllThingsGorilla The difference is the castrated males won't fight or cause trouble... bachelor groups actually are not very natural- it looks nice but as well as play, there is also frequently stress among the males, particularly unrelated ones. As they get older they often have to be seperated due to fighting, so that some end up living alone. This is not widely mentioned obviously..castration was seen as a way of allowing at least some males to stay in the group they were born in, and also taken pressure of the number of males needing places in bachelor groups, but it has very harmful effects too.

    He is long and lanky, it doesn’t appear his ribs are showing, his thighs have some muscle definition. He has no testosterone coursing through his body to bulk him up and he won’t have the fat layers like the females for child bearing. I hope he is ok, I’m sure he is getting as much as the rest of them. The age they are neutered is going to have a bearing on their appearance. Only time will tell what long term effect this is going to have. It’s very sad but at the time there was talk of euthanasia as a solution. As much as I think it’s terrible I’m so thankful they went this direction instead. I feel like it would be murd^r to harm these precious babies.

    I am very confident it has to do with hormones, either genetically their bloodline isn’t producing the male hormone enough that produces maturity in looks or castration/neurter has happened, they look very tall in structure and very thin too. They obviously are NOT producing that male hormone, if it’s not genetic, then due to castration or neutering that produces the strong hormone for the looks of a male silverback. For example: when a male mature lion with its full grown mane is castrated or neutered they loose that mane and look more like the mature female lions. In humans we can get injections of the hormone to produce more of a male/female hormone to express in our looks but idk if it has been done in animals especially gorillas?.?.? They look content. As long as they are NOT suffering and are happy in their environment let them be….

I have serious doubts about their happiness, but I have no way to ask or communicate with them. Seeing them so thin really breaks my heart. 💔 Perhaps it's due to the presence of male hormones, but why choose to neuter them? In Europe, there are many bachelor troops. @@AllThingsGorilla There are not enough bachelor groups to contain all the surplus males.. it costs a lot of money to build enclosures for gorillas(or other apes) so not that many new ones get built. With a birth ratio of 50/50 there are lots of spare males as in group you only need one adult male for several females. Castration was made an option so at least some males could stay in the group they were born in as they are no threat to the silverback leader. But its very controversial. The problem is too many gorillas have been allowed to breed in Europe zoos. That's how the problem was created. I think all castrate males will look similar to Loango as they mature. I've seen castrated chimps and mandrills that look similar. No muscle development males them look tall and slim..
