- My electric powered Racing boats for Offshore (in the sea) racing.
Description of the big race winning one of 2019
And my new smaller one for 2020.
Racing in the OMRA (Offshore Model Racing) organisation in the UK.
The races are 20minutes long for the big boat, a "Phantom 145"
And between 5 and 10 minutes for the smaller "Phantom 125"
Great video Nick and very informative. Yes, l can vouch for how fast it is and also, how heavy it is. Clearly demonstrates that for racing on the open sea that weight definitely IS an beneficial!
Impressive setups Nick. I'm sure you'll do well this season!
Great talk on your boats.. I am working on one about the size of your big one but nothing near the battery capacity. I sport around on a lake . I was interested in your battery placement. Mine is doing some prop walking . I think I will try and move the batteries more t the port side. The prop torque is a killer for sure. Nice job.
Hi Doug, thanks for the feedback. I had to balance it out on the lake, but it is a compromise. On the sea it is not so easy to go flat out, so the batteries do not have to be so far over to counteract the torque. I can move the battery position quite easily, but normally leave them and go with it. Be good to see yours when finished. All the best. Nick
thanks for sharing your setup really interesting , like the way you build and explaining , it seems to be extremely reliable setup ,it s not an easy task running for 20 minutes , wish to ask you 2 questions please , do you leave radio antenna inside ? and what 150 amp fuse are you using ? thankyou and well done again
Hi Maurizio. The Futaba radio (Surface car receiver) works perfectly with the aerial inside. The aerial is held as high as possible under the top hatch.. I never had a radio problem even in long distance and bad weather.
The 150Amp fuse does not overheat and handles bursts of amps over 150amps. I think a 125amp will also be okay.
I think they will only blow if I get a short circuit.
I use good quality ones from Farnell (not the cheap car ones on Ebay).

@@nickadams5411 thanks for your reply , it was really helpful ,really appreciated , thanks again
Hi Nick great video! Is there much comparison cost wise building an equivalent petrol or nitro powered boat? Also what do you think about the Futaba 7xc? Would love one but pricey compared to my 4grs
Nick, would love to see some running footage.
I took videos of the other boats, but no one took a video of mine. There is a video of me testing it on a lake.
@@nickadams5411 hi Nick please can you contact me about some electrical work i have if you're interested.
@@jonr4888 Hi John. Sorry, I am not in good health at the moment, so probably of not much use. All the best Nick
What cell lipo’s are in the 145? Because they are huge, is it in series or parallel ?
Hi Wasim. They are 32000mAh/10C/6S industrial drone lipos, in series giving 12S (50volt). Also very expensive.
Nick Adams - what run time do you get? Also are you even able to charge them back up when racing? Because you would need a massive leisure batter to do it.
@@wasimiqbal3719 Hi. I use a portable generator (1.5Kw) and a charger that can charge 2 x 6S lipo at 25amps.!! So it takes 90 minutes to charge the from flat. (Draws 1.25Kw from the generator).
The races are 20minutes. So I have to adjust the speed so it lasts. I check the mah used at 10 minutes, which should be less than 1600mA.
Hi Nick, I am doing a large twin (through a gearbox, one motor, 2 60mm 3 bladed props) mono (1.4m) build now and thinking of using my 2 Tattu 6S 22,000 mah, 25c packs in series for 12s. Lots of people are saying the batteries will not handle it. I am using a TP 5860 10D 600kv 6 pole motor and ZTW Seal 300a ESC. What do you think?
Hi Jeremy. Yes, 12S is the only way, because the amp draw will be only half for the same power, and it is the amps that destroys the ESC, plugs and motors. I have seen many boat installations overheat because they are running 6S. You will need a ESC that handles the higher voltage. Also the motor will rev at twice the 6S. But 600KV is what I use. All the best. Nick
Offshore racing with these boats must be absolutely spectacular! I am very interested in the setup of these boats and I'm curious about a couple of things: Why are the motors mounted up front when the stingers are right at the back, as there is flexibility to shift components around for the correct CG? And is it mandatory for the "safety releases" to be mounted on the front deck, after all, long leads add resistance to the electrical system, do they not? I really hope that the smaller hull is rigid enough, as it would be such a lot of work to reinforce it now. Good luck with the 2020 race season Mr. Adams, and stay safe!
i Remko. There are a couple of videos I made of these boats racing in 2019, and one of mine being tested at the lake: ua-cam.com/video/nv-uZCeT0wg/v-deo.html

The safety release could be anywhere so it is easily operated. There are some rotary key switches, but they are very heavy. There is not a lot of space anywhere else on the top of the boat.
I placed the motor forward so I could use a straight prop shaft (minimum losses) and minimise the stinger drive angle. In theory the propeller should be in line with the hull, and any deviation will either raise or lower the forward force. Most, if not all the existing boats use flexible drive shafts that enable the engines to be placed nearer the stern, but the curve of the shaft does absorb energy, due to the flexing and friction. And the propeller can be set inline with the hull.
Inline propellers are supported by a strut , which is not adjustable. A stinger can have the angle adjusted.
By the way, I think it is called a "Stinger" as it resembles the stinger needle of bees .
Thanks for the feedback and yes stay safe. Nick
Wow!!. I’m trying to buy ahobbyking Genesis but the price has more than doubled since a few years ago. If you can link any videos of you racing these I’d love to see it!!. Love fast boats!.
Hi, Yes I made a few videos of boats of all sizes.

Don't get the Genesis, it's OK in a straight line but corners not so good very unstable
Awesome review Nick, are you going to bring the phantom 125 down the Lake when all this is over?
Hi Smudge. Yes, I will need to test and trim it out. Hopefully it will be stable at high speed. I am also making another 145 electric, the same as mine, and that will need testing at the Lake as well. Let's hope this pandemic ends before the summer. All the best and stay safe. Nick.
hey nick do some vids testing the latest 2s lipos for touring car for mod and stock please
Hi. I did a video of some new 2S lipos for 2020. ua-cam.com/video/A0iDTLOBtPQ/v-deo.html
