While I won’t be attending the National, I will be attending a small local show in the Fall and am trying to coordinate attending Strongsville next year. My experience at shows is very limited. I attempted to start a list so that I would feel organized when I go, but I found that my list just kept going and going and going. At this point, I think I go with just a few bigger cards (not super big) and hope that I find a deal. But, I also know myself and understand that as soon as I walk in, I will be jumping from table to table and start impulsively buying stuff that isn’t even on my radar lol. I will say, I did go to a show a few months ago and showed better self control than normal, so hopefully that carries over. Really enjoyed listening and I hope you both get great stuff at the National. Good luck!
Great conversation as always, fellas. Seems like Graig still doesn't know what his plan is at the National. I'm sure he'll have a blast anyway and pick up some amazing cards. Look forward to seeing you both!
I believe Darren has 7 "card" accounts: National, Must Have, Wish I Could Afford, Can't Miss Deals, Commons, Junk Slabs, and Watch Me Flex accounts. This ensure he can achieve his lifetime goals, aspirations, and ambitions. It allows him to reflect under a shady tree about life's priorities, knowing he has expensive pieces of cardboard locked in a box somewhere he cannot even look at unless he makes arrangements. And being these will never be sold, it's a sound investment.
My guess/analogy is Strongsville is like a nostalgic local carnival. The National is Disney World. One isn't better than the other, just different. There is one dealer that was really rude to me at the 2012 National that I still won't buy from today. One of the biggest dealers in the hobby, too. Give your hard earned money to dealers that deserve/earn your business.
My favorite show with my 2 favorite youtube All-stars. Have fun next week fellas, I know you will. My National Strategy would be to walk directly to William Chappel's table, as he's an East Coast Show exclusive dealer and you never know what he has. Probably something GREAT. I like his inventory and I like him more. Then I'm working my way over to Ash to take my lumps after blowing my budget with a check.
If there is a card you may come back for ask the table number. That’s how I know I can come back. I think I am going to try the biggie first strategy that you suggest.
Why would you not use 130 point dot com for comps? It seems to me to be the most comprehensive site comparing sales from all selling platforms and it’s also updated very quickly (usually within 48 hours from what I can tell).
Great conversation 2 things for me It might be important or wise to pal up and stay together while walking the floor because of what happened,4 eyes are better than 2 Also last year at Chicago,I went looking for the Berra rookie to complete my run at a table, this guy had one with no prices so I asked him about the price then he walks away right after he gave me the number,I said to myself what the hell,so yes some dealers are not people friendly But I figured it is what is,his loss not mine, and found it somewhere else So have fun guys, enjoy it and make memories!!!!!
Good stuff guys. I think I'm more of wing it guy than a big plan guy. You covered it at the end. I was about to ask how much cash you or other people are comfortable carrying. I picture a guy with a briefcase handcuffed to his wrist like an old spy movie. Ha Ha
you have a 1960 topps mantle for trade.........i have a 66 and 67 mantle to trade......don`t know how to scan.......but i am willing to send first........these cards have no crease.......i would put them in a vg range........plmk either way........randy
Graig- target the rarest card on your list 1st. Sometimes just seeing a rarity is a surprise, let alone owning it. Just ask Orlando. See you soon at the National.
All this national talk made me come to realization and shop on eBay since I’ll be missing out. That 2am eBay purchase ended with me buying a 1952 WSGM 1 Ticket stub where Jackie hit his first WS HR. I think it’ll go well with my other Jackie purchases
Darren seems like a nice guy, but extremely paranoid. Be smart, but questioning if you should bring cash because of what happened at Dallas is an overreaction.
So wait, you both aren't taking loads of cash? You're the first people I've heard say that. All the others say that you can't expect dealers to take PayPal or Venmo, so bring cash.
You 2 and your lists and budgets and making 10 different accounts moving money back and fourth 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 its like rocket science for card collecting what is going on 😂😂😂.
Great talk, guys. Thanks for doing it!
Thanks for listening.

I really enjoy Strongsville....but more for hanging out than the actual cards.
This is my first National. I’m kinda pumped about it. I hope I run into you guys. Thank you for the helpful tips and thought provoking ideas.
Glad we ran into each other.
@@MidLifeCards I am too. You’re a great guy off camera as well as on.
@@tonyleebrick9050 Thanks my friend. Well stay in touch. I guarantee it.
If you see the card that meets your eye and the price that's acceptable BUY IT!!!!!!!
I followed that advice.

He will spend thousands more than he planned.🤣
The plan came together perfectly.
@@MidLifeCards It couldn't have come together any better for both of us!
Gave a video like. Always enjoy these episodes, thanks for sharing
Thanks for listening.

HA! Nailed it! I need to reassess my life... 🤣🤣🤣
LOLOLOL
You can’t over-think it.
Agreed.
The National is Disneyland for collectors. I wouldn't expect great deals for vintage but if want something it's probably there.
Speaking of...they should sell churros at the national.
I really enjoyed watching this video, looking forward to meeting you both at the National.
We love recording these episodes so much.

Good analogy.
Hi Graig. Great stuff, not much longer now, talk soon my friend
Keep an eye out for a Stephen with a ph shirt on a video coming soon.

I ended up not buying a card from Chappel....but a LOT of guys did!! He had some great stuff.

That's a strategy that I used and it worked.
Why would you not use 130 point dot com for comps? It seems to me to be the most comprehensive site comparing sales from all selling platforms and it’s also updated very quickly (usually within 48 hours from what I can tell).
I use card ladder and it works great.
Love the conversation gents. See y’all soon
Had a lot of fun in Cleveland with you my brother.
great video guys! wish i was going. But I really think I would love love strongsville. i'm hoping to go to strongsville next year.
Me three. Get there!
Just ad lib it. A wrench always gets thrown into your plans anyway.
So true.

We did do a lot of walking around in pairs. More fun that way, too.

Can’t wait.

Not sure I understand.

That's somewhat what I did....until the Banks showed up!!
All this national talk made me come to realization and shop on eBay since I’ll be missing out. That 2am eBay purchase ended with me buying a 1952 WSGM 1 Ticket stub where Jackie hit his first WS HR. I think it’ll go well with my other Jackie purchases
Ebay has great stuff too. The national just has it all in one place.

😂 In my Kevin Hart voice, the way my back account is set up…I got a checking and a savings!!
I know. We're nuts.
If you see it buy it. Don't wait
Done!!
Cash is king. Wear a money belt
That's basically what I did.
