  • A few people asked me if I could play and post Frank Zappa's famous 'Black Page No.1' drum-solo. This is a piece Frank Zappa used to audition drummers with. It's completely written out and it's called the "black page", because once he finished writing it, the page kinda appeared black :-). To this day this composition remains one of the most challenging drum pieces.
    So, thank you Frank Zappa. Here's The Black Page No.1

    Bozzio learned this 36 years ago. At that time, it/he was unbelievable. I saw Bozzio with Zappa in '76. The Zoot Allures and Bongo Fury stuff he did was something else (and, he added the whole showmanship stuff). I saw Vinnie Colaiuta do it in a whole different band, and we all know VINNIE (my jaw hurt from hangin...haha). The band with Vinnie was much bigger. Chester Thompson was my favorite of all. And, when he and Ralph Humphrey played together was really special.

    You all understand that Zappa was a percussionist before he was a guitar player, correct? And that he was a composer? The Black Page is extremely complex in its usage of tuplets and nested tuplets. What Marco played here (fantastically, by the way) was only the drum solo section. There is a melody to this piece. Yes, it's strange, but that's Zappa.

    The funny part is that those who can play the black page make it look easy. I mean, i heard the piece so much that i can recall all the parts from memory, but i'm pretty sure i'll be never be able to play this. Just the constant hi-hat is enough to make me want to give up the drums.

    Not sure on (1), I think its a bit different in the end on the second run. Regarding (2), there are lots of pieces with that structure. Its a very common structure in jazz where you have a scheme with a set of chords and melody and just run trough it all the time, as long as preferred. Bright size life from Pat Metheny is an example.

  • @mmbalint
    @mmbalint 11 років тому +4

    Thanks!
    It took me a while to notice that the structure of the piece is: repeating the whole thing again, so it "begins" one more time in the middle, and plays the whole thing again.
    My questions: 1.) am I right on this? 2.) Is there any other piece in music history with this structure, I mean consisiting of "two sections", where the second is just the repetition of the first one?...

    ***** Zappa WAS a percussionist. You must be trolling for adversarial replies. Either that or you know absolutely nothing about the man and his prolific catalogue of symphonic, rock, jazz, and experimental noise compositions.
    His first appearance on tv was playing percussion, in his late teens/early 20s.
    Zappa was a composer FIRST and foremost.
    His polyrhythms were so intricate Steve Vai had to invent new notation marks in order to transcribe his music (You can find the transcriptions in early 1980's Guitar Player mags).
    There's a reason a multitude of the best drummers and percussionists in the world played in Zappa's band.
    You've got over 65 albums to choose from.
    Everything Hank J. Levy taught is within those albums.
    Envelopes.
    Listen and learn, my dear.

    Zappa might have got the punch line of following with Black Page No. 2 from Middle Eastern Bedouin music. Which he did listen to. When that starts off, it sounds like horrible drums with a badly tuned rhythm section until suddenly the vocals do the melody, then it sounds more like something a westerner can follow and make sense of, all of a sudden. Like the Black Page 1 and then 2, the easy teenage New York version.

      @Lu-ql 4 роки тому +2

      Yes, it's clear you don't know anything about music or drumming. There's a reason Frank Zappa wrote this to audition his drummers and music isn't about being easy or difficult either.
      When you have drummers such as Marco Minnemann and Terry Bozzio saying this is a complex piece to play, your uneducated opinion on the matter is completely irrelevant.

      Sebastian Victor Micu what a poisonous, ignorant thing to say. “Trust me”? No, I’ll trust my own ears. You stand on the shoulders of the greats, ALL of whom revere Frank because they’re educated to how incredible he was. I watched your drum cover vid and watched you play the same fill 4 times and follow it with silly stick spins like you were happy with yourself. You’re a decent drummer, though very contrived, and you miss the point, which is communicating with others.. it shows in your playing and your words.
      Go pick up Zappa - Joe’s Garage, and start your Zappa journey.
      Humble yourself, lose a couple cymbals, quit twirling your sticks, tighten up your right foot, learn to respect legends, and MAYBE you’ll be great. There are few truly great creators.
