  • Day 20 of our pacific crossing onboard the trimaran Spirit XL. With these short daily updates we try and show what life’s like onboard as you sail for weeks on end across oceans. Our updates are sent when and if we can and a lot of this relies upon how our starlink is feeling. Hope you enjoy it ;-)

    I’ve been following your journey, best of luck and fairseas. Looks amazing. I had the privilege of delivering spirit from San Diego to Ensenada for the previous owner. At the time I felt bad because she’s such a beautiful vessel and was poorly maintained. I love what you have done with her and agree completely with your keep it simple strategy. Just a beautiful sailing boat. Enjoy.

      Thanks 🙏 seems shes touched a few peoples lives this old girl. She’s sure is an amazing boat and design we feel lucky to have grabbed her when we did as she was falling off the cliff and near a point of no return. It’ll take us years to get her back up to speed but we’ll do it slowly but surely and will continue to focus on keeping her simple. All the best!

    Amazed how she glides through the water so effortlessly (compared to say my 1970's IOR half tonner lol). Her wake looks wonderful

    Great to hear the miles are ticking off even under controlled conditions. I remember the previous owner saying crew had trouble sleeping in the forward berths as the boat would launch off waves when pushed and the sleeping crew would be airborne in their bunks

    • @TrimaranSpiritXL
      @TrimaranSpiritXL  8 місяців тому

      Yeah I’ve seen that video and can imagine that if you tried to punch into it with speed it would be quite uncomfortable and maybe even dangerous to be trying to sleep in the forward cabin.

    Excellent video! Your explanation of how intuition can prevent problems was mesmerizing. While you were explaining the rudder ram attachment screw backing out, the wake of the boat was powering out the back like a motorboat! If this is Spirit XL taking it easy, her first regatta with new sails will be something to see.
    It is interesting to hear how the forecast is changing your routing strategy for the next three days. Originally you talked of going North of the rhumb line expecting to tighten up in lighter winds approaching the Marquesas. Now with heavier winds expected, you are going to position yourself South of the rhumb line allowing the boat to fall off and run during the approach. If I understand this correctly what sort of distances North or South of the rhumb line do you have in mind?
    Amazing that you still have fresh food! Kudos to Claudia.

    • @TrimaranSpiritXL
      @TrimaranSpiritXL  8 місяців тому

      Thanks 🙏 and spot on Pat that’s right we were aiming to be north by about 100nm when we were around 300nm out and now aiming for around 60nm south but to be honest it changes daily with each forecast as the wind strength and direction changes.

    Man, glad you checked the rudder when you did, when you boat "talks" to you everyone needs to listen. Still such great conditions, the ground swell looks long interval so from a long way off, take it gently and have a great rest when you get in.

    Love the Hammerheads - that rudder equipment is super exposed though… is it a lifting rudder?

    • @TrimaranSpiritXL
      @TrimaranSpiritXL  8 місяців тому +1

      Yeah they’re a great design! And yep that’s a hinging rudder. Boats been around the world twice and done two singlehanded transats so I’d say the rudder designs well proven and it’s given us no issues over the last 5,000nm seems to be a solid and simple solution 👍

    • @PN_48
      @PN_48 8 місяців тому

      @@TrimaranSpiritXLFair point! And I guess exposed means easily checked and maintained as well… I can imagine quite a few other boats wouldn’t be able to do the same daily checks you’ve done, and wouldn’t have caught that loose pin in time. Just another reminder that simple is key on a long passage👍

    Sorry for being naive on the topic but i feel like you're a good person to ask. What do you think about the motion of the boat? especially when it comes to sleep. I would also love to know your opinion on cat vs tri in regards to comfort/motion for sleep if you have any experience cats. thanks ♥ love the vids

    • @TrimaranSpiritXL
      @TrimaranSpiritXL  8 місяців тому +1

      These aren’t easy questions as they’re all relative. What I consider a good motion you may consider bad? All I can recommend is to get out there and to sail as many different types of boats/hull shapes as you can. No boat will ever be perfect they are all a compromise and have their good and bad points. We think Spirit is wonderful her motion when sailed correctly is very pleasant but this can be dependent upon the conditions, sea state, wind angle and so on. We prefer trimarans over catamarans as they have a more gentle motion at sea but it’s not always the case. Even between trimaran designs the motion can dramatically change no hull shape is the same and it’s the hull shape and construction material that really affects a boats motion and liveability. If you’re ever in the same area we’re in come for a sail and experience it yourself.

    OK, this is a stupid comment. Claudia is an unusual name in the US. I grew up in the country. We had a neighbor who had a daughter named Claudia. There seemed to be "something wrong with her". Looking back, I have no clue what it may have been. I was very young, but I remember feeling sad for her. I don't know what became of her. Life is so precious. We all get "dealt a hand of cards" to play when we're born. Not all of us get good "hands" to play. It's very unfair, and it hurts me to think about it. Anyway, that's what Claudia's name reminds me of... Fair winds.

    • @TrimaranSpiritXL
      @TrimaranSpiritXL  8 місяців тому +1

      Nothing wrong with your comment it makes sense that a persons name especially not a common one can take us back in time. It’s nice that you think about those that are less fortunate in a world where empathy is lacking.
      Claudia is actually an old name with Latin and Roman roots so it’s no wonder is not so popular within the US.
