"All clinical studies of cancer should be targeting glucose and glutamine while the patient is in nutritional ketosis" The most important sentence in the video, and perhaps in decades.
Very much so. But notice that targeting of glutamine is INTERMITTENT only, thus allowing the healthy cells to recover. It seems many commentors here are glutamine fans and are getting freaked out by apparent attacks on their favourite supplement without understanding the details.
@@douglascutler1037 So how does one go about targeting glucose and glutamine if fighting cancer? Is it possible to do this at home, or will it cost an arm and a leg finding a doctor who knows how to do it?

When I had Hodgkin Lymphoma I had several MRI scans and each time I had to fast for a solid 12 hours. When I went to my appointment they injected me with a radioactive glucose an hour before the scan. This is because the cancer cells rapidly take up the glucose more so than other surrounding cells and they highlight on the MRI! This tells me a layman the cancer cells feed on sugars.
True, I had the same treatment. It was a full body scan. I dont know if it was MRI but it was with sugar and a radio active substance. I probably still have the lab report and the scan results even though it was 15 years ago

@@cinystarr4657 If you DO have a diagnosis of cancer, I think he IS saying it is important to limit glucose as much as possible, and then glutamine fueling reduction is also in need of limiting, but in a 'pulsed' manner, because of normal cell mechanisms in the body also need glutamine. The goal being the reduction of fuels to cancer cells, using fermentation of fuels, but not limiting normal cells from having adequate fuels. The normal cells being limited by cutting way back on glucose, can easily utilize ketones as a very good fuel, that cancer cells do not use. We are very well adapted evolutionarily to mainly using ketones as fuel, but our lifestyles now are only usually using constant supply of sugars, which is not how we were adapted to living with through all seasons. That is why it is very important to reduce glucose to the tumor.

Put that crap from a meal together with crappy carbs in cakes and sweets and it is a recipe for bad health down the road. Only a vegan whole foods diet keeps a person healthy longer.
I think Keto probably isn't the magic bullet. It's great for losing weight but you are also limiting energy for a lot of healthy cells. So something like chemo or radiation that is already tough on the body is going to be even worse for someone doing Keto. But the idea of doing Keto when your body isn't recovering from those is probably a great idea, especially if you have very targeted chemo therapies that only damage the cancerous cells. Also just knowing that limiting glucose, and maybe glutamine also, slows the growth of cancerous cells could be useful. Instead of eating a slice of cake when you have cancer you are probably much better off eating some broccoli with butter.
We all just believe what we want and any evidence that supports us, no matter how weak the evidence. We like to feel right. Most don't care about actually being factually correct.

@@michaelmurray6197 The idea of keto is that, in the absence of glucose, the body 'burns' fat in order to produce energy. The reason you lose weight is because that stored fat is being used, plus the fact that excess glucose isn't being converted to fat, and being stored.

Chemo and radiation is my option as the carcinoma is inoperable. I am stopping all sugar today. I am looking into this channel for more information. I am 70.
It's not really a treatment. It seems to be more of a way to slow down cancer growth, maybe to the point where your own cancer fighting cells can fight it off or slow it even further. I'd be wary of doing super low carb while you are in the midst of chemo or radiation, since it will also slow the repair and healing of the other cells in your body when they get damaged. But it could be very useful if you are in remission and do it properly or are waiting for those treatments. At the very least just cutting out sugar and lowering your carb intake should be helpful.
2:10 glucose and glutamine: the two pathways, the two fuels are synergistic in providing all the metabolites and all of the energy needed for rapid dysregulated growth
Just a problem with glutamine is that it's in all animal protein: meat, paultry, dairy, eggs, fish... and it's even in some veggies! So wtf are we suppose to eat to get into ketosis?
@@daniby9894 The statement above is not from me but from the video. It implies to block glutamine within the cancer cells (e.g. ""Dr Casey Peavler how to block glutamine"). Also, the two pathways are synergistic. So, avoiding glucose is possible and will therefore mitigate glutamine impact. To get in ketosis you have of course to avoid carbs (the glucose pathway)

@@niononion4363Exactly, sugar is what cancer cells live on. Cut out the sugar. This includes all sugars natural and processed. Stay away from all breads, pastas and etc., these are cancer fuels.
He says that you can starve, and kill, cancer cells by adopting a permanent ketogenic diet and complementing it with a therapy made of a glutamine inhibitor (which is a toxic thing, you do it in burst, within a protocol, not continuously). Most cancer cells cannot use respiration (the Krebs cycle) and cannot use ketosis (feeding on fat acids). They can only use fermentation of glucose and glutamine. With a ketogenic diet, you greatly reduce the glucose content in the body. With the glutamine inhibitor, you prevent the cancer cells to feed on glutamine. This way you starve your tumor, and keep it under control, by reducing it and preventing it from proliferating, while nourishing the rest of your body with fat acids coming from the ketogenic diet.
I'm 76. For over 40 years, I've been aware of ketogenic diets. In 1983, I met a metabolic genius who could explain the chemistry. @@donpayton737 Yes of course, I would be stupid not to. immunotherapy didn’t work. Carnivore, TKI (cabo), off-labels and supplements seem to be doing the trick of stopping growth and making reductions.
There is a transcript of everything he said. When I hit a word I am not familiar with I look up the definition. This is detailed biochemistry, but it can be broken down. I have no doubt this is the right track to fight cancer, but Big Pharma will spend tons to suppress it.
The nature of cancer is to divide and grow in an uncontrolled manner continually. If it grows but then stops then it's probably benign. If it just grew uncontrolled but slowly you may not even notice before you died, in fact quite a few people die with cancer instead of from cancer (it's why past a certain age they stopped doing prostate exams). In order to sustain this growth the cancer cells need a lot of energy, more than the non-cancerous cells do. Glucose (what your body gets from most carbohydrates like sugar that aren't fiber) is the fastest and most efficient energy for cells. That is why for instance runners carb load before a big race, it gives them more energy quickly. By limiting the glucose in your body, by limiting what you eat and by exercising after eating to burn off the glucose you do eat, you therefore limit how quickly cancerous cells can get energy. Without that fast energy the cancerous cells can't grow as quickly, which gives time for other things to kill them like cancer fighting cells, chemo, or radiation. Of course there are dangers if you miss some useful nutrients. Or for example if chemo or radiation are damaging cells you need that can't heal fast enough without the quick energy from glucose. But for someone say waiting to start chemo or radiation it would be very useful. Or if say the chemo was very targeted and only damaged cancerous cells. Or for example the radiation was targeted at a limb and wasn't going to impact other vital organs. Or just knowing that you shouldn't have your body flooded with glucose 24/7 so you can slow the growth. It's useful in a lot of ways even without going full Keto or Carnivore diet with the super low carbs.
Thank you for your WORK, and for the plain English explanation. I'm serious! And I love your mild New England accent;) This is ALL very encouraging to everyone who has lost family members to cancer.
@@FinalCurse Many mainstream cancer researchers are now taking up the metabolic challenge. Terry Fox Cancer Society in Canada is just one example. The thing is, metabolic therapy can be used along side mainstream therapies as a compliment. Cancer weakened by metabolic measures becomes more vulnerable to chemo, radiation and immuno. So metabolic is not necessarily a direct threat to mainstream therapies.
I've watched quite a few cancer and disease videos over the years, and I'm by no means an expert. The 3 things that seem to me to be consistent for any disease/cancer to thrive in the human body are: 1) Low oxygen. 2) Acidic environment. 3) High sugar/carbs/glucose.
That makes total sense. The experiment makes sense, the entire process from thought to hard results. It's simple, I can't believe it wasn't discovered sooner.
The initial observation that cancer was related to metabolic dysfunction was made during 1930s Germany by Dr. Warburg and is called the Warbug Effect to this day. But something was missing. Warburg was aware of glucose as a cancer fuel but not glutamine. This is the missing link that Dr. Seyfried is filling in and why his new research is so significant.
Ok, we know how to get in therapeutic ketosis but how do we get access to DON (the medication targeting glutamine) and when should you take the supplements during therapeutical ketosis period? And how much? These are critical questions for me to be able to implement the protocol
The prevention is limiting the amount of insults to the mitochondria which can be achieved by reducing stress, eating healthy whole foods, exercise, grounding, etc.
Thank you, Thomas, for your dedicated application of your knowledge to unravel the driving life force of cancer cells. It has been known for sometime that cancer seems to thrive in creating an acidic environment around itself and your discoveries of the fermentation factor feeds directly into that structure, as pH is a driving force of fermentation; the more acidic the environment becomes, the more it favours fermentation processes. This realisation, more than 10 years ago, encouraged me to construct a "designer drink" to help the body lean towards the alkaline side of its normal range of 7.35 to 7.45 pH with the object being to make the body less hospitable to cancer. The design was intended for prevention rather than trying to be a cure. My own family has no history of cancer, nor I at 77 years, but a lot of friends were succumbing to its ravages. If nothing else it is a very healthy drink, so the basic ingredients to make 2 litres are set forth as (all raw product): Fresh beetroots (2 large), about 5 lemons with the flesh included (lemon is acidic but becomes powerfully alkaline within the gut), about half of a quarter of watermelon, several teaspoons of green tea to about 400ml almost boiled water and I add, for my own taste purposes, 4 tablespoons of cold extracted honey. The last item is contra-indicated owing to its glucose content, but for me it is not an issue and I welcome the positive content of honey. The ingredients are blended in a strong processor and consumed at the rate of about a glass a day.
This just reminded me of something, I completely changed my habits by finding out book called Health and Beauty Mastery by Julian Bannett. It has been censored.
This is awesome. Professor Seyfried explains it in an almost layman's terms. It's easy to follow his logic. I am very much looking forward to peer review.
it is really easy. low carb with no sugar or flour. certainly you need no more than 50 grams of carbs daily and can live on less than 5 grams of carbs daily. if i had cancer, i would start carnivore, but right now i am enjoying certain fruits and vegetables too much to give them up.
I don’t understand why every one says a carnivore diet is good given meat is a major source of glutamine? Surely this research is suggesting a good diet for limiting cancer cell growth is to limit intake of foods that break down into glucose and foods that breakdown into glutamine (ie carbs, sugars and protein rich food?). That doesn’t leave much…
To make complex ideas simple enough for a housewife to understand takes genius of a special order! For this information to lead to the successful treatment of cancer is extraordinary.. thank you.
This info is spectacular! But his comment that it's not difficult to understand is 😆😂😆...I'm just a high school educated granny and I'm here to say that those ginormous words were absolutely hard to comprehend! 😁😁 Super smart man!!!
When I was a child (I'm early 50s now) I used to read accounts of people who survived and got healed of cancer because they did a huge amount of not too strenuous exercise. That's the reason why they survived, because they starved the cancer off glucose and glutamin by continously exercising.
The great work done by Warburg in 1931 has largely been ignored. Dr Seyfried, therefore, deserves massive kudos for persisting in filling in the jigsaw around glucose and glutamine with the publication of his work. For those who have always doubted the efficacy if the SOCs - and for future sufferers - this is a game-changer.
Ya the guy that thinks everyone has worms, is the same people that wont take a vaccine and will take a horse dewormer! You know they were both created by scientist😂😂
It’s awesome to see your passion on these discoveries to help us all cure our cancers. Please don’t stop testing, learning and posting. We’re depending on you. 🙏
30 yo male here. To be honest i dont see the rate of cancer patients going down drastically. There are a lot of people who are ignorant and won't change their diet. For anything. Not even to be healthy. They are stuck to eating their way and won't change unless the individual chooses to themselves. Most of my family have known about this as ive told them. Theyve been around me as ive been on the carnivore diet for over 5 years now. They see the results but dont want to change the way they eat. I have an uncle who has cancer and a grandfather who has cancer. Both of them never changed their diet. They are just struggling with the treatments and what their doctor tells them. I know exactly what to do if i ever have a trace of cancer. I doubt i will, though. Due to diet, exercise, and regular water fasting.
Strangely, somehow what he said made sense, His firmness of purpose and excitement, I couldn't help but smile. Not complicated" !!! God bless and protect him.
The most important direction of research now is to determine a protocol regarding the administration of glutamine inhibitor. When then is made, one can even think of a self-administered therapy.
Dr. Siddhartha Mukherjee, a renowned oncologist and Pulitzer Prize-winning author, discussed the latest understandings of the intricate communication of cancer cell growth in his keynote address at the 2024 NFCR conference. Video on youtube. He also has a video called, starving cancer without starving yourself.
The keynote was a big ZERO. Sid is a high tech & pharma schill. Our nation has been pathetically losing the "war on cancer" for 50 yrs. and rates of cancer Dx are climbing - and Pharma & Big Healthcare are raking in $Billions$!
Thank God for Professor Seyfried. Should be given a couple Nobel Prizes: one for his crucial scientific work and another for his humanitarian service. He should not have to ask for funding. Where is the do nothing US government? Why hasn't he been given a grant?
What is being defined as glucose? Carbs aren’t just donuts and white bread. Complex carbs are bean protein and vegetables high in vitamin C. Super interesting on the mitochondrial info!
(i know it isnt you posting this, but if youre' reading this) thank you Doc, for briefly talking about glutamate vs glutamine. I asked this in a previous comment in another video and was really curious about this.
Astonishing. The end of cancer. My diet is centered around high fat hamburger. About a pound per day. Getting the excessive carbs out has me feeling and thinking so much better. I noticed you mentioned Ketones. I'm largely ignorant but I hope I'm on a better path now with my diet. Thanks for the good news.
Ketones are the fuel produced when a person stops carbs and using glucose for fuel. You're burning ketones for fuel. You are "fat adapted". Meaning your body is burning fat for fuel not "sugar". Congratulations!
My father in law reported to Mayo for radiation treatment. Right at the entrance to the radiation lab, in the family waiting room was a big frig full of soda pop for patients and families. The dietitian offered no solutions. I inquired about the Gearson diet which cleans the toxins shed by eating a high vegetable diet. Cleansing with coffee enemas. All she could say was ,”listen to your son in law he is a smart man”. Her hands were tied by Mayo policy. So sad. Diet is a very hard treatment option but it is essential to fix most of what ails us. Dimentia took my pops but not cancer. Of course his certificate said covid.
I had the exact same experience at MD Anderson in 2016. My mom was doing Gerson therapy (diet, enemas etc) we were stunned by the junk food in the cafeteria and by the advice of the mandatory dietitian meeting. She admitted she knew her advice was not sound and lamented that in spite of all she knew, she had to do her job. Sad.
Getting rid of Glucose and simple carbs is easy enough but how do you get rid of Glutamine? Our bodies make Glutamine and almost all foods in a Keto diet contain Glutamine. So how do we get to Ketosis without eating Glutamine or increasing its production? Not only that but most metabolic functions in our body require Glutamine. So how exactly do we starve a tumor cell of it and not the rest of our body? I can see how this is possible in lab cultures but not in the human body. I wish he would explain the theory for how this would work.
Check out Dr. Casey Peavler. He works very hard researching clinical data on this very question and has some fascinating evidence to report. Otherwise, Dr. Seyfired already has a 'pulse' provision in his press'/pulse protocol. The press is ongoing keto against glucose but the pulse is INTERMITTENT inhibition of glutamine so healthy cells can recover between pulses. It is Dr. Seyfried's observation and claim that healthy cells can tolerate temporary lack of glutamine but cancer cells are energy pigs (but hate keto) and will soon start dying without both glucose and glutamine.
@@alexoja2918 Dr. Seyfried uses a glutamine inhibitor drug with short form name DON which is currently only available for research purposes and is not prescribable. But one Dr. Casey Peavler - who has an active UA-cam presence - and has taken up the challenge of scouring the literature for clinical evidence of other means to mess with glutamine uptake. He has some fascinating findings. Very much worth a look.
Most people in these comments are missing the point. This is not JUST advocating for a ketogenic diet. That alone will not do much. Foods most rich in gluatmine are eggs and dairy and things like that. You need a ketogenic diet AND a glutamine antagonist.
At 7:00 into the video is one of the most important statements you have made. Thank you does not seem enough but grateful to scientists and researchers such as yourself. Getting closer now.

I'd suggest searching the emerging science research on quantum biology, how physics actually affects biology (surprise), How, light and NNEMF effects DO alter biology, and should therefore affect the current medical paradigm, but unfortunately get censored by the corporate need for 'increasing profit at any cost' IMHO. But much is now known about light quality and quantity, to understand how much of the engineering and manufacturing will NEED to be changed toward providing the quality conditions of natural daylight, and reducing the devastating harms of living indoors with only narrow bands of wavelengths, that have left vast benefit outdoors, and now indoor lighting is toxic.
@raykinney9907 need to design transparent materials that will allow for the passage of full spectrum sunlight so you can be outside when you're inside. 😎
Thank you so much for your dedication to this cause. I've recently had a prostatectomy and at diagnosis I began a somewhat healthy keto regime which I believe led to a very successful surgery and no remnants of cancer. Thank you
Simplified version: The claim is that cancer can be starved. Cancer cells feed primarily on blood glucose and an amino acid called glutamine. But cancer cells can't metabolize ketones whereas healthy cells can switch to ketones as necessary. There is the Achilles Heel. Reduce glucose with keto diet, inhibit glutamine uptake intermittently with special measures and the cancer cell is in trouble. IMPORTANT NOTE: Metablolic therapy is being proposed as an ADJUNCT or compliment to mainstream therapy, not a replacement. Cancer cells weakened by metabolic may be more vulnerable to chemo, radiation, immuno, etc.
Ok, I need explanation if cancer feeds on glucose and glutamine, glutamine is high in meat like beef, chicken and pork, then what is left? What about carnivores?
@@judithyoast31 You can fast. No food at all or only eat fat - you dont die. Pure ketosis. But you body creates glutamine itself to preserve muscles etc... so they sould invent drugs to regulate glutamine for treatment to work. If he is right he could cure cancer with fasting + glutamine/glutamine fermentation suppression drug. (in 72 hours cancer cells should starve to death). Healthy cells can live on ketones for this period of time.

@@bigguy130 The full press/pulse metabolic protocol as developed by Dr. Seyfried unfortunately is currently only available under experimental conditions. This is because a key glutamine blocking drug called DON for short is only available under experimental conditions.

The first component of press/pulse is the ongoing press of blocking glucose. This is freely available to everyone who can make the commitment. Ketogenic diet is the method and comes in different forms including pure carnivore, omnivore, vegetarian and vegan keto. I myself am currently transitioning from low carb vegan to keto vegan. Plenty of info online for any of the keto diet forms. I've also recently acquired a blond glucose monitor to assist me.

The 'pulse' of blocking glutamine is the hard part. A great UA-cam resource here is Dr. Casey Peavler who has made it his mission to scour the literature for clinical data on any easily available supplements or methods that might block or inhibit glutamine or which might otherwise mess with cancer metabolism in some manner. He is very scientific and only looks at credible research.
Dr. Peavler has identified several options for the gluttamine side including: 1) green tea, 2) green tea extract aka EGCG which may also be complemented with red pepper powder like cayenne for greater effect. (Some caution is advised for EGCG. Listen to your body because it seems some people do not react well to CGEG and it can cause liver problems. I myself have this issue but I can still take green tea itself. It's unfortunate for me because EGCG often makes it to the top of this list of alternatives); 3) High dose melatonin (research this one in depth, what you find may surprise you.) 4) berberine; 5) turmeric and/or curcumin which is concentrated from turmeric; 6) querrcetin; 7) milk thistle.
Other things I take are turkey tail mushroom powder for enhanced immune response and , vitamin D.

You don't really understand what you are talking about. This is expected for people with standard medical training. Sugar itself is not the enemy (except when it is refined, put into junk food, etc.). Animal proteins and fats are the really enemy of long term human health. They are the root cause of type 2 diabetes as well as many cancers, heart disease.

@@chinesecrested9528 Good luck! I've heard that Thailand has very good healthcare, one of the very best worldwide.
"We" is the vaguest imaginable noun.
In order to be believed you need to make your data public. Not just "30 individuals in full remission", but how many people *in total* were in the pool (and don't say "30"; NO study has a 100% success rate). And make it a longitudinal study, because cancer has a nasty habit of seeming to go away for a few months or even a few years, then roaring back.

Basically saying low carb/keto diet is the answer.

"Not complicated"!! For this lay woman it ishighly complicated. I highly respect this doctor and wish I could understand more.
Stop eating sugar and go on keto diet google keto diet

There are already cures. Big pharma doesn't want them released.
@@Bob_Adkins Cause becomes less relevant if you know have to cut off the fuel supply in most cases.
The prevention is limiting the amount of insults to the mitochondria which can be achieved by reducing stress, eating healthy whole foods, exercise, grounding, etc.
This is a great summary of how cancer behaves.

I don't understand 2/3 of what this professor saying... but I understand this is huge advance in fight with cancer cells. 🙂
