    Witnessing the fall of Gerber has been sad and painful. They were actually a great company when I was a kid 40 years ago, and they are local to me so I really want to like them. But even today they still have a place in the market when it comes to innovation and new designs they're constantly pushing the envelope and trying to come up with new stuff. If they could just nail down the QC and maybe start upgrading the steels a little bit, I can see them climbing to the upper echelons again.

      If you're lucky enough to get any of their stuff in the 80's 2nd hand they made some great knives. When Fiskars bought them out back in the late 80's everything went semi-rapidly downhill until reaching the complete dogshit levels it is today. But in a way, a lot of people want cheap, they don't necessarily want quality so its sort of ended up currently just meeting that need

      I feel like Gerber still is sort of ok by the early-nineties standard where multitools are exotic and 440C is an entry level premium steel. And I still have quite a few cheap sub-$20 liner lock pocket knives that I've bought from them and liked fine for that level of fundamentally disposable beater pocket knife in 420 or 8cr13mov or something.
      But then there's shit like this at $99.95... and it's not worth it.

    I wish more multitools came with replaceable craft/utility/scalpel knife blades. It's one of the biggest reasons I backed GOAT multitool on Kickstarter right away. The craft knife on the Gerber almost made me buy one of these, but it always seemed too bulky and too flawed in the rest of the tools to justify it. I have an old school Gerber from the 70s or 80s made out of M2 hss. It's a really nice knife that's ground thin, holds a nice edge, comfortable in hand and pretty much indestructible. The coating/finish they used on hss makes it not rust which is a nice touch. The Gerber of today is mostly cheap Sal Mart knives with a few decent designs here and there. Its sad how the company has declined.

    • @garethbaus5471
      @garethbaus5471 2 роки тому

      M2 with a titanium nitride coating would probably make a fairly good blade even by today's standards, it would have decent edge retention and the coating would be durable enough to prevent rust for a very long time.

    • @D00MTR33
      @D00MTR33 2 роки тому

      @@garethbaus5471 M2 is nice but M4 has it beat in pretty much everything. It's a powder steel, better wear resistance, higher toughness, higher max hardness. Like you said, M2 is still a good steel that can give a pretty good performance. But there's a reason why its not being used anymore, why use it when there's M4? Just to be different?
      If you can find it a at decent price I'd recommend it(I bought a couple Gerber paring knives in it as well for about $15 a piece) but it's not something to look out for or have a maker use it instead.

    Great video, thanks.
    I just bought this knife because of this great review.
    I did not buy it because it is a Gerber. I have never bought, owned, or even used a Gerber before.
    The first thing I will do is smash the tool to loosen the tools so they come out easy enough.
    Then, take the stupid thumb tabs off the main blade as long as that does not prevent the blade from staying closed.
    Then, if needed, attach something new that can open the blade, but make sure it is easily removable when I use the blade if it is in the way of proper full blade use.
    The only real reason I ordered this knife is for the chisel that folds out. Having a folding chisel knife and folding X-Acto blade pocket knife is hard to find online. & also I was able to buy this knife for $25.00. With free shipping from BladeHQ on sale, when I added it to my Silky Saw, I ordered to get up to $99.00 to qualify for free shipping.
    The chisel thumb stud is going to also be removed even if I need to smash it off.
    Plan to take a file and sharpen the pry bar edge until it works properly and fix the nail puller if needed to work.
    I do not mind it being heavy and chunky as I will figure out how to add a lanyard to this hunk of metal to hang into my pocket from my belt.

      ...
      The Wave is very good too, opening the primary tools from the "outside" is preferable, but the interior tools do not appeal to me at all, mini scissors, bit driver, mini screwdriver e.t.c...
      I'd buy tomorrow a setup similiar to the Rebar, delete the serrated blade and bottle/can opener for an X-acto replaceable craft knife.
      I guess if I could have the primary bladed tools on the exterior/" accesable while closed position", like the wave, with the components of the Rebar in addition to my aforementioned deletes/addition I'd be fresh out of things to complain about.

    I had an original Gerber Multiplier in the 90's and loved it. After I started working I thought I could replace the Gerber and my pocket knife with the easier to access blade on the Leatherman Wave. Fast forward a few years and Gerber was bought out by Fiskars, but I started to miss the old plier flick of the Gerber so I got the new (at the time) Flik and Freehand models. They were horrible; Overly complicated opening mechanism, stiff main tools, and tiny useless drivers and opener. They have spent the last 15 years or so in a drawer for the most part. Turned me off Gerber ever since.
    To be fair, I did buy a Dime on sale more recently. It has been fine for what it is for me, a tertiary keychain tool that sees little actual use. I like the outboard bottle opener and tweezers though.

    My first glance I said that pry bar looks thick, guess that proved so. Gerber can't make a file, they're always shitty and have been that way for years going back at least to their Center Drive.
    I do have a Gerber Prybrid and that's not too bad. I do still find the pry portion a little thicker than I'd like but I have used it around the homestead for a number of things and have found it generally useful. That one uses replaceable standard utility blades you can get from any hardware store, so they're always sharp and very easy to replace. The sliding action on deploying it is grainy and terrible as per Gerber overseas standards though but I'm not regularly deploying it so much that it's necessarily a big deal.

  • @TheGrenadier97
    @TheGrenadier97 2 роки тому +1

    In my opinion, Gerber should take the basic Prybrid and develop it into a true companion to a Victorinox or Leatherman: a better prybar, utility blade, bit driver, all one-handed and lockable plus a pocket clip. Nothing else, except maybe a chisel or serrated blade. Prybrid X could be developed into a smaller sibling to the more capable one by sacrificing some functions to keep the size down, for those people that don't carry multitools of any kind but enjoy having a small prybar, for instance. But... i felt that the most recent models were wasted opportunities.

    I have few of them, but only one of those I have enjoyed and used a lot, MP600 bluntnose. At start it felt weak, I broke every single tool inside except the file and the mediocre serrated blade. But the pliers are just fantastic. There is a lot of free play in them, but they can really do the job and the action is super smooth. They really grip and can take twisting unlike Leatherman Wave for example. All these newer ones really feel like toys more than tools.

    I liked Gerber in the 90's and owned a couple of their knives... but as you said, about 20 years ago the name became unreliable. I didn't realize it's cause they were bought and half their products are now made over-seas, though.
    I want to like Benchmade, but their knives are always too bulky for my tastes. Luckily, Kershaw and CRKT (though, mostly Kershaw) have been reliable for me over the years for my pocketknife needs. With mostly smaller brands based in the US filling my needs for fixed blade knives. I've yet to get a multi-tool just because I don't see a need for most of what they include often enough to justify either the purchase or their bulkiness in my pocket or hanging from my belt... plus, every one I've ever handled takes too much effort to deploy and have locking mechanisms that scare me when I go to fold them back up.

    This sounds about right with Gerber - I had the centre drive however it was rubbish out of the box, i took it back and bunnings opened 2 others for a replacement for me however they were of shit enough quality that the guy didn't want to give it to me. Refund.

    I actually have the gerber prybrid and again that one is SO close to being good but those idiots HAD to put a bottle opener on it which creates an unbearable hot spot. Can we all get together and sign a petition saying a bottleopener is not a tool? So that companies stop hastily adding it to every tool last minute just so they can say it is a multitool.

  • @krazmokramer

    Gerber should pay you for solving the non-opening problem! Gerber sucks! For much less money, you could get a Stanley prybar, a Buck 110, and a roll of duct tape. Duct tape the 110 to the prybar and you have a fully functional mutitool thats better than that "SHITILY (Pete's word) made Gerber. This video also proves you have excellent eye-hand coordination (trash can and metal pole hits). Good video Pete!! HOLD ON....duct tape won't work. Can't open the blade. Get a small C-clamp instead of the tape. Doubles as a pocket clip.

    Only owned one Gerber, the saw back gator machete. It was so crappy in so many ways I never bought another one again. There are so many better options at the same prices.

    Seems like the better option would be to just buy the little prybar/craft knife holder keychain that Gerber sells. I believe it's called the Prybrid.

      Pair that with literally any leatherman full size multitool and you've got far better capability and way less headache.

    If it says "Made In USA Portland Oregon" on the box, Gerber is still making some good quality tools. If it doesn't I won't spend any money on it.

    Generally speaking I stay away from anything Gerber that is made overseas. The only products that are any good are the ones made in the USA. They are not the greatest but the quality is about the same as Leatherman (Both USA products) when you compare them head to head. Thanks for the look see and keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable.
