Don't get SHAFTED - Stock Shafts vs Genuine Aftermarket Shafts

  • If you think you can save money and buy the genuine aftermarket shaft you've been fitted for off-the-shelf, you REALLY need to watch this. They might look the same but certainly wont perform the same. Consequently there will be a HUGE trade off in perform and will ultimately be a poor reflection of a fantastic fitting........If you're going to get shafted, get genuinely shafted! 😂

    great info ... I bought a new driver this summer. Played about 50 rounds with it and then in the fall, I began increasing the number of practice sessions to 3 times a week. After 6 weeks of my fall schedule .. 1 play day ..2 practice days (or 3) .. my 50 gram evenflow riptide shaft splintered 8 inches up from the clubhead. Callaway was great and without the slightest quarrel .. they sent a replacement shaft in less than 5 days.. but I had to take to 60 gram shaft to get it that quickly. Making me a bit suspicious about the quality of those 50 gram shafts.

    Play with a Tour AD XC shaft and after a great fitting, the whole driver was £800. The performance (for me and my golf) have been fantastic. Hit some great drives with it but more importantly, I never have cause to blame the club or the shaft for the bad ones I hit. This means for me at any rate, I will keep playing this driver for years to come 🤞and not be changing out to 2 or 3 different off the shelf products trying to find ‘the one’. I don’t blame people for not wanting to pay that much but if people could experience a great fit and what a top quality shaft can do, I think they would change their mind.

      Hi Tom. Some stock shafts are genuine but yes if you require a very specific shaft weight/profile then you need to maximise the performance of both the head, shaft and very specifically the way the two are carefully assembled. Manufacturers invest millions R&D into the heads, that’s what you’re paying for. They don’t make shafts so they outsource to the shaft companies and understandably want to spend as little as possible to offer a shaft the performs acceptably. You won’t find any stock “made for” shaft played on men’s Tours. However in some cases stock shafts are acceptable, in other cases not.

    So between the Fujikura speeder 661 in my old M2 and the Mitsubishi Tensei in my new Ping 425 , which is the best shaft ? Would it be worth it for me to have a Ping tip put on the Fujikura ?

    • @Precision_Golf

      Sadly I cannot say for certain which one is the best one - I also do not know which model Tensei you have so cannot give a comparison but the Speeder 661 is a great shaft. In theory the G425 head is more forgiving so if you are looking for forgiveness the the Ping will help with that

  • @johnk.atchley5079
    @johnk.atchley5079 9 місяців тому

    I like your last comment. Both shafts can be right, depending on the person who swings them. Fujikura is a good company and they don't make junk just to sell cheap. Players with high swing speeds can definitely derive a major benefit from the increased consistency and tighter dispersion of the Velocore aftermarket version. But for players with much lower swing speeds, like me, those benefits may not be as needed nor worth the extra cost. They should not feel like they are accepting something inferior. And I assume that reputable, honest and fair fitters like you guys would doubtless respect the budget constraints of a customer and if the higher priced aftermarket tour version is not really needed by that player, you would explain the differences and advise them to take the stock version, and, if there is money left over, use it to buy something else they need, like a wedge or putter. Horses for courses. By the way, I just recently encountered this issue when I purchased a Tour Edge 722C 10.5 degree driver for my adult son with the stock Ventus Red 5 R flex shaft that clearly has at the tip the T4 letters indicating it is non-Velocore. It was a demo put on the clearance rack in absolutely mint condition for a price too good to pass up, just US $99. Yes, $99. I have played for over 60 years and tried a lot of different drivers. I flipped the front and back weights to put the 20 gram one at the back and the 8 gram one in front, and played a round with it myself last week. it performed extremely well. So well, in fact, that I may keep it and give him my current driver!!

      The only way to be certain is by testing. It really is a “definitely maybe” answer because it is only possible to be certain by testing and comparing and seeing how much difference there is. Some players see no tangible difference so the upgrade is not worth the extra cost and others see a large difference making it worthwhile, no matter what club speed someone has.

    how does the velocore compare with the Autoflex and Brava BGT?

    • @Precision_Golf
      @Precision_Golf  Рік тому

      Apologies for the delay replying. The Velocore in the Ventus reduces the ovalling of the shaft and therefore makes the bend and twisting of the shaft more consistent meaning less deviation in strike and spin.
      The Autoflex is effectively a 48g - 55g shaft that is slightly counterbalanced but also very soft. There is meant to be some “Hidden Korea Technology” but to this date noone can tell me what it is! The material quality of the shaft is clearly good to withstand the loads it can at such a soft flex but the speed gain mainly comes from the weight and balance point allowing the player to swing faster. The soft flex does produce a higher launch and spin also.
      The Brava shaft is a light but very stiff profile so the light weight again promotes speed but the stiff flex is designed to give control and keep spin down. Utilising some of the principles behind the Stability putter shaft in Wood shafts to reduce dispersion.
      No shaft will work for every player though so no matter his good the design or the materials it boils down to which shaft the player can move at maximum speed but critically also staying in balance and therefore controlling strike and face angle

    • @Precision_Golf

      @@billryan8707 I think more specifics required from your initial question. This very much depends on whether or not you’re talking about the cost of raw materials, or the cost for the OEMs to purchase from the shaft factories. You can strip back the raw costs materials of anything as far back as pulling it out of the ground. This should not used as argument against the retail cost. If consumers took that view you’d never buy anything every again! :) Look how much the perfume liquid costs as a proportion of the bottled product….less than 1% of the retail cost. However, I will agree that the low graphite and very high resin component in stock “made for” shafts are desperately cheap, possibly costing as little as $2 per shaft in the volumes the big companies order them it. Although that said they can be a good fit for some! Premium shaft manufacturers deserve a little more credit as in most instances when fitted and built correctly they will out perform “made for” stock shafts. It’s really down to how much someone values spending on equipment, but ultimately each to their own.

      Hi Ablazer. Sadly not at all. This would only firm up the very tip of the shaft, FCM by 3-5CPM and have no impact on any of the rest of it. Whilst it will stiffen the tip very slightly the material difference in the structure of the whole shaft on the aftermarket model will still retain far greater stability throughout the swing. As stated the stock shaft and softer profile will benefit some players but solely tipping it will not make them comparable products.
