A lot of people mistake their sensitivity for a broken skin barrier and vice versa. Sensitivity is common when using active products. However, it doesn't typically last long. Mild redness, irritation, and dryness is common with sensitive skin. But, if your skin is constantly dry, red, itchy, flaky, and inflamed, chances are your barrier is compromised. You can damage your skin barrier by over exfoliating or using too may actives, too often.
