- Easy To Use EMP Protection For Cheap | Faraday Bag Ideas
Every prepper should have a faraday bag for EMP protection and the Crossbreed Holsters ARK Resister bag does the job. But what goes in it?
Everyone should prepare for the possibility of an EMP (electromagnetic pulse) effecting their electronics at some point in the future. These events can occur both naturally in the form of CME's (coronal mass ejections) from the sun or artificially from a high atmosphere nuclear detonation. The Carrington Event of 1859 was the last recorded CME event that wrecked havoc on telegraph lines and primitive electronics of the time. Proving that this will likely happen again!
The easiest and still effective way of protecting small electronics from these types of events is through the use of a faraday bag. The Crossbreed Holsters ARK Resister bag is a great option that is budget friendly, capable and made in the USA! Even if you don't choose to go with the ARK bag, make sure you have some way of protecting your small electronics from an EMP. Also, be sure to comment below about what types of gear you would be protecting in your faraday bag!
Here is Crossbreed's video about the ARK Resister bag in case you want to know more or how to heat seal it: • Questions and Answers:...

A good item for one of these bags is a handheld solar generator for charging up usb devices. Spending extra time looking for equipment that can be charged via usb can be a lifesaver. You can even charge up your boefeng if you have the usb charging adapter. In fact I would try as hard as possible to obtain devices that can be recharged via usb. You even have Bear trimmers and hair clippers (for cutting hair)that can be recharged. Rechargeable batteries (AA AAA C D batteries) that have a USB adapter to charge them back up. Stream light even has a dual cr123a usb charger. This will help especially if you left your main solar generator out during an EMP.
A CHEAP solar watch would be a Casio tough solar watch. Price has gone up but will be only 39.99 max. Just make sure you don’t stick it in a drawer away from light as the battery can possibly get ruined and be non operational when you finally get it out.
Daniel has a good point you could even add a small foldable solar panel to
It’s reading that book that got ya thinking on this huh? 😉
Oo a new book what is it. I might like to read it where I live I'm surounded by the possablitys of emps tons of nuclear around me and people that think blowing up microwaves is a good idea I never will understand that one but it does tend to screw electrical stuff up with in a range of it
Great info, as usual. There are a lot of arguments online about the details if EMP protection. One guy I trust says to pull off the batteries from HT's and cell phones, etc. And I don't think anyone would disagree with removing all antennas, like you showed. Great HT bag, BTW! Good variety of items shown.
Yes, I have the exact same bags as you showed, for the same reasons you mentioned. I think it's medium risk over the next 10 years. Sorry, but I do not trust China not to pressure N Korea into launching a couple from a ship off our coast!
I went to High School with Mark Craighead , the founder. He passed away a few years ago unfortunately, but it's a great company. Good products from a great Christian company.
@Clint EastwoodenDoors lol nope.
Good to hear that👍🤝
Definitely a good company.
@Clint EastwoodenDoors put down the meth pipe, and back away…
@@bravowhiskey4684 Well put.
I didn't even finish watching the video. Dang it MP, I just purchased 2 of theses bags and this topic has been on my mind for a while now. I have pvs14's a peq15, jackery power station and some pretty high-end radios and optics. I picked up a mission darkness bag (I think it was also you who suggested it a while back) for my phone, but had nothing for my go-gear! I also picked up a emp shield for my rig last year. I hope these things end up being unnecessary, but that's not how I think. Thanks again MP, you never let the grass grow under my feet 👍😎👍
When you mentioned high end optics, I thought of thermal, and I'm wondering if a typical gun safe acts as a faraday cage...
Gun safe would be, as long as the door shuts to body of safe with metal on metal seal, and the seal is near perfect
@@keithricketts4867 With $10000 high tech optics out now, I see a market for that safe.
@@mrjon75 I was wondering the same thing a while back. I think I'll try the raido in the safe test!
Silica packs, O2 absorbers, inside the bag is a great addition.. also a mylar bag works as a faraday cage/bag.. electricity travels on the outside no matter how thin the material is, only catch is the durability goes down with thinner matterials..
A Faraday bag thanks for sharing!
LOVE LOVE LOVE the HAIR. I’m jealous!!!
Great info too. I got a F bag a few things in it and a EMP shield on the Jeep. Good to know I’m not the only crazy out there.
Very ironic that you put this out, and our set up is almost the same! Your last video showed the ARK bags, I looked but were sold out. I went to faradaydefense and got three of the 12x18 on sale for under $30 shipped fast with a discount code. The size is a bit oversized for my needs, but at least I can put comms, extra lights, old phones, and battery banks in one, give one to my buddy for the same, and don't know what to do with the other one, LOL Great company with more products than I could ever imagine!
I'll definitely be picking a few up this Friday. 👍🏽👌🏽
just ordered! thanks for the great info!
Transport your prepaid "burner" (i.e., "gift") debit cards and prepaid burner phones in faraday bags to protect them from scanning or erasure by checkpoint EMP.
I use small size EMP pulse-resistant bags to protect my spare electronic medical devices from EMP -- devices such as pulse oximeters and electronic thermometers. You never know if a disaster could make you the one who has to do the diagnosing, first aid, doctoring and in-home nursing for an ill or injured family member or neighbor.
The watch is a nice touch as well. Thank you
Great idea about using an old cell phone👍 I’ll be charging up one of my old ones to throw it into my comms case..thanks MP!
Well done 🔥🔥🔥
The walkie talkie test was a great idea. Thanks for sharing valuable info
Glad it was helpful!
THKS
This is one of the topics I know the least about, thanks for the info👍
Great video
good food for thought.
Some excellent ideas in this video! Thanks!
You're welcome!
Good informational video , thanks for sharing , God bless !
Thanks
Great video I need some of these 👍
Thanks!
Just bought some of the bags. Great information 👍
Great ideas!
Just for added measure, the tape I'd use to seal it up would be aluminized tape lol
I can't believe there's a piece of cool gear that is *actually affordable*! Lol
Kinda nice that it works even unsealed too!
I keep my devices in cardboard boxes. Then wrapped them with 5 layers of aluminum foil. Then place it in an individual faraday bag. I heat seal the bag closed. I then go to my Faraday metal garbage can that is lined in the inside wall and floor with cardboard and also has a very large faraday bag in it. ( Think faraday trash bag size) and place the individual items into the can.
Then when done, seal can with metal duct tape along edges.
So, I have many layers of protection being used.
1) Aluminum Foil
2) Small Faraday bag
3) Large Faraday bag
4) Metal Garbage can.
Multi layer protection.
Because you only get ONE CHANCE TO PROTECT AGAINST AN EMP...
Just for info I use bags from: practical disaster. Good prices. Arthur Bradley site who is known as the EMP doctor...
Good luck
Some backup red dots/ optics would be a great addition to store away in a faraday bag, obviously have your primary optic mounted and zeroed but having an extra per rifle would be a great sort of insurance. even if an EMP doesn't go off, but you shatter your primary optic having an extra stored away would be great.
I agree! Holosun or Sig Romeo5 would be great, budget friendly back ups.
I'm so new to this.
Great video. I think i find myself a little too impatient and do things like just rip the tenderloins out with my hand, but probably miss some meat. A pinch of patience is the key :)
I made a poor man's faraday cage by using a smaller metal garbage can, taped up all the seams with metal tape. Tested it with a radio that lost signal when I put on the lid. Then I put each sensitive in it enclosed in a antistatic bag and/or wrapped in aluminum foil and taped with metal tape and insulated from the metal can. And I did NOT ground the can, my studies showed this is better for protecting.
I also am installing an EMP protection device into my breaker box.
Note....the beefing radios arec2m/70cm only. They are made to work off repeaters mostly. Yes, you can use them for short range work, but...
A good short wave listening radio and maybe, if you really want to, a cheap HF radio. These require wire antennas but you may consider them...
I use 2 old microwave ovens. I keep a bunch of raw e-sata hard drives (all my backups) and a drive bay with power supply, an old Laptop that will browse, and an old iPhone 5, etc.
I should get in the habit of putting my new iPhone and iPad into my kitchen microwave at night before I sleep. That has multiple benefits.
After watching this video, my wife ordered two of these bags. Just waiting for them to come in.
I'm really not that prepared for EMP everything else pretty good hopefully we will have a little more time!
I made my own from teal trash can. Solder any rivets that may leak. Line with cardboard with lid.a fine copper mesh lid cover. Also not proven to work I ground the can with car jumper cables. $40. I have four. One I have back up solar panels, inverter etc. The others are full of items required after a EMP/solar SHTF situation. Some items are also in repurposed metal cookie tins and sealed.
Theres a strong chance were headed into a solar maximum, so this is good timing 👍
Do batteries fry during an EMP, specifically lithium Ion?
Great find! This trash can was getting in the way. lol.
That's so Crazy....I have a bag just like your little ODG one, and I use it for the same thing, cables , chargers and batteries.
Mylar Faraday bags are great for holding solar security lights . One thing that you forgot to mention is that your electronic device need to be insulated so that it doesnt come in contact with the mylar bag or the metal surface of any Faraday box . You can use rubber , duct tape , etc on the inside of the bag or container .
For insulation, I use cardboard boxes mostly around my electronics. Also use ziploc bags as plastic is non conductive.
I'm wondering if painting on a few layers of Flex Seal would do the trick lol
@@3nertia It should work just fine
NO! Do not put ESD creating items *inside* the ESD shielding bags. No duct tape, simple static bags or anything else.
I’m using a few .50 and .30cal cans. Went to a local fabric store and bought some thick rubber neoprene. I’m making a liner with the neoprene on all sides and top of the can to insulate items from the metal of the can. I’m a bit nuts and will also have kit in a faraday bag, inside that ammo can.
Im curious if it would still work, if you break down these bags into sheets, over lap the sheets like lining, covering the inside of a pelican case. If it does work it would be a great increase in storage of larger items or larger amount of sensitive items such as whole firearms with their own devices, Red dots, flashlights, IR stuff. You could pack away an either kit for emergencies. I would love hear others comments on this idea.
To answer your question, yes EMP/CME is a valid concern. They don't even have to a huge world ending event level. Take the Quebec power grid failure a couple decades ago. One thing that might be wise is the brain box of a late 80s early 90s vehicle if you have one. Of course all the sensors, switches, and doodads in a newer outfit would be too much but those older outfits that only had one or two chips in them you can easily store replacement parts.
Got mission darkness oversized generator bags for honda generators, using trash cans with lid gaskets to protect solar generators, have a metal box to protect satellite phone and radios. Using faraday defense emp bags for my foldable solar panels. I'm using boxes as insulation inside of the metal. If you have space and don't need quick access, don't forget to nest the items, metal then insulation then metal then insulation. Remove all batteries and power cords inside of faraday. Emp is attracted to cables and battery ends. Also don't forget in the house, add whole house surge protection like emp shield or something to protect appliances from surges. I also added badwolf outlet surge protectors to the outlets of key appliances as well. You can also add iron ferrites to ground key power cables of appliances in use. Also use hvac aluminum tape for your faraday seals.
Ive used discarded boxes from big screen TV sets for my solar panels and covered them with mylar and hvac taped the seams
"Up your prepper game ", my minute long video on mounting a rifle on a three wheel bike if your interested.
Love your videos @Magic Prepper. Posted today
You can buy faraday material from Amazon and other sources for making your own custom faraday protection.
For example, you can make a very large "bag" for helping to "disappear" a person on the lam:
The person on the run enters the large bag and cuts off their ankle monitor bracelet, seals the bracelet into a small faraday bag, then exits the large bag.
Immediately travel to the private airport for a pre-arranged flight and escape; drop the bracelet (in its small faraday bag) over a large body of water from the air.
Thats 🥚zakly wut I did and they aint cot me yet
And this info would be used...when?
@@Erribell they were putting people under house arrest for covid and putting ankle monitors on them.
You’ve put a lot of thought into this!
Other stuff you could put in there is weapons optics and lights most use LEDs now a days. Medical equipment like pulse oximeter, blood pressure monitors and thermometers if you have electronic ones.
Great job! Love the Comms bag! Would it be prudent to remove the batteries from the radios? I’ve had those things corrode while in storage. Keep it up!
Some would say that battery removal is important. I plan on maintaining the items in the bag from time to time so I am not as concerned about it. If I was going to heat seal everything, I would definitely remove the batteries.
Lithium batteries that are rechargeable hold their charge for a long time and they dont leak like other batteries. A good idea for storage and you can recharge them once you use them.
I’d basically copy what you have in this bag, then have another for tactical stuff. Optics, more flashlights and batteries etc
Double or triple over the bag opening before sealing with tape to make sure all gaps are closed
If there was an EMP, I’m wondering if you would pause before taking out your supplies. I would be worried that another EMP would be coming.
I have a large bag with the majority of my electronics, and then a couple smaller bags alongside that with just a single ham radio each (in smaller/cheaper "cell phone EMP bags"). That way I can just open a smaller bag while I'm scanning for information, without yet risking the larger bag. Also, you can seal it back up after just getting out what you need for now, to further mitigate subsequent CME/EMP. I also keep one of the smaller EMP bags with a radio in my EDC "Get Home" bag.
true, but if EMP's are used (be it localized, HEMP or anything in between) there is great chance that country would retaliate with nukes (and most likely trigger all out nuke fest). there is always chance of lurking subs, using nukes days or weeks after initial exchange, but majority would be used in first 12-36 hours after first attack.
I am European. Here we can buy in the stores cookies in metal boxes. That are just the packaging. If you line them with something insulation works as well as small faraday box. And it's for free.
Just out of curiosity, do the things in the bag have to be individually wrapped? I have each product wrapped in aluminum foil, then in the bucket, then in the emp pail. It this over doing it?
Any ideas for protection for medium sized solar generator?
Woould a Zip-lok bag be fine for making the faraday bag waterproof? My stuff stays in a safe place that shouldn't be getting wet.
What have u heard on the DYI “trash can faraday cages”. Take an old school steel trash can cut cardboard to line with aluminum foil. That would be pretty cheap probably $30-$40. I just learned of’em.
Yup those can work as well!
Watch Emp Doctor on You Tube, he tests the shielding of various items. I decided instead of lining the cans with cardboard, to place my items in cardboard boxes with duct tape and put in can. The cardboard contacts the metal, not the devices. Also I used to hvac tape the lid closed, but now I added non conductive gaskets to the inside of the lid and also hvac tape the lid closed, nesting is good too. Metal- nonmetal-metal-nonmetal.
What is the cool baofeng radio case that you showed!?
I made an EMP box out of an aluminum box that I sealed with aluminum tape. It still leaks light but strange thing is that the walkie talkie loses connection but the cellphone doesn’t. So it it safe now or not?
You can also make a faraday cage out of those Christmas popcorn tins and a can of Flex Seal.
Popcorn tins , candy boxes and cookie tins all work great , just use duct tape to line the inside and then seal it with metal tape
That's a great idea ! Thanks 😊 !
@@electricfetus100 This is the season to hit the resale shops like Volunteers of America and get those cookie tins , they put them away after Christmas
What brand of tape should I get to seal the bag? But I don’t want a permanent seal though so I can take and put things in the bag easily.
Saw the survival guide app on that samsung phone lol....also have a hard copy just in case
Currently unavailable... Thank you for this video. I will check back with inventory
What about a solar panel system. Would it be susceptible to an emp?
You need a small drone for observation and surveillance in your bag.
🤔
@@westernoutpost4154 Voodoo?
This is a dumb question but I’m assuming these are all redundant items? I can’t imagine opening and closing the bag cause you need something.
I literally just put Radioddity GS5B (IP56 rated, can charge via microUSB) and solar charger/battery into a Mission Darkness MOLLE-compatible Faraday bag today
Good work! You never know right?
the zero daylight between ham radio channels and prepper channels is how I got into intentional prepping so I'll use this setup regardless
If there's a serious EMP will there be any buddy with radios for you to listen to with your radio? Just a thought.
Targeted individuals can use this stuff as well.
Do you recommend storing batteries in those bags?
I can see putting my red/ green dot and scopes of my rifles and handguns as well as gun flashlight
Lots of chargers but how are you going to charge them? Got a shielded solar bank/inverter?
How can large appliances like freezers and refrigerators be protected? Is it sufficient to plug them in with a good quality surge protector?
Can we open them and reseal?
How do you shield your solar panels though? You'd need a pretty huge bag!
Will the optics on your rifles in the safe be ok or is there a way to ground your safe maybe? Thanks for another great video God bless!
I;d worry about the reticle if youve got a lighted one . Same with lazers
you really have to test those since many of those bags don't really work
What Kind of 2 way radio do you have?
Wow this a great Idea, I just order two bags and will be building two kits. What about your solar panels would you have to protect them?
Yes, you have to protect your solar panels , used large sceen TV boxes work great . You have to cover them with mylar or foil and use metal tape on every seam.
Mp foil tape would of been a better idea then that tape plus it will help with water proofing
The adhesive on foil tape is much stronger and likely to difficult to remove. At least that's been my experience. But for something more durable and permanent I agree!
@@MagicPrepper your right but if you don't use it and something happens all the duct tape or masking in the world is not going to complete the circuit maybe if you laced some copper wire thought the tape it might
I just use a small metal tool box with some foam in side glued to the box then seal it with foil tape and it fits in my wtf bag
I can do this with aluminum foil and or emergency blankets
Do they have a bag big enough to stick some solar panels in?
Like other channels I see discussing protection from EMP events... how are any of these devices/practices tested against an extreme solar event or a nuclear emp event? I don't see anyone addressing this issue!
A steel trash can would probably do the job too.
I like wolverine hair magic prepper
Anyone know bout Soviet EMP projects with over power Cause non conductive metals?
I’m not sure when the last time you looked at your Amazon lists were, but a lot of the stuff you recommend are out of stock. From calorie bars to the rechargeable arc flashlight.
I'm going Amish.
A metal ammo can, with objects inside enclosed in a sealed plastic bag *is* a Faraday cage ;)
Cheap and tough!
Ammo can wont work as it has a rubber gasket around the inside top lid . You have to use metal tape around the seams and thats a real mess on an ammo can.
If there was a real EMP attack, I think the whole cellphone network will be dead, even if your own phone still works. You've talked about Ham radio before, that's how things will go to get info. Internet, cable TV, that will all be dead.
Ok let me get this straight it's only 20 bucks and your not affiliated hmm. I'm messing with you but seriously good lookin out on the bag thanks for the info keep em coming magic
Well now I know what to do with my Motorola case.
Slso if u plan on storing a solar generator, or any lithium batteries long term, i would recommend not storing the full charge, like 45 50% is recommended, and dont let it just sit for years, every 6 months least, try run charge out put it through couple charge cycles
Would a 55 gallon steel drum work for an emp shield?
Yes
Hey Magic where did you get that black radio walki talki where can I purchase it thanks for sharing the bag for our electronics I am new to your channel and learning alot from you thank you...😊
Search for Baofeng UV-5R
Keep in mind, a baofeng uv-5r is a ham radio not a standard walkie talkie. Most countries require a form of license to transmit with a ham radio and doing so without a license will at best result in licensed ham radio operators telling you to stop or at worst will result in legal trouble. It's totally fine if you just want to listen, it's just transmitting you need a license for.
Thank you Magic 😊
Thank you R.B for your info on the ham radio I agree.
...you need another bag INSIDE the bag ;D
One of the best faraday cages that will cost you nothing, is a dead microwave oven. Also one item that needs to be added to the faraday cage.... led light bulbs because many of these are "cob" chip on board they will be very subject to emp. In a shtf senerio you want to be able to run as effeciently as possibble current wise. This wont do you any good if all your led bulbs are blown out.
The only ones that will be toasted are those that are installed in fixtures attached to the grid, or other wiring runs. EMP gains its destructive ability from induced currents. The longer the run of a conductor (wires, for example), the more current an EMP can induce until it destroys them and everything they touch.
Question...instead of using duct tape, would self adhesive velcro strips work for sealing the bag for accessibility and reuse? Or is that not a tight enough seal for emp protection?
Not tight enough as you need the material to seal against itself.
Roger that...thank you
@@wcoonradt264 You cannot leave even one small gap where the EMP can get through , it has to be metal to metal
@@bobsblues9944 Agree, if you use a bag fold it down at least 3 times before taping.
A list of your survial apps?
Get an OTG adapter for the old phone. Then you can plug in USB devices and memory cards
I still can’t get an exact answer on what exactly may be affected by an emp... Cars? Generators? Small engine equipment? Etc etc
Do you store walkie talkie or ham radio batteries inside them or do you Separate are from the device?
Alkaline batteries typically corrode if left installed over long periods. From what I understand, though, lithium batteries are generally OK to leave installed for long periods as they don't corrode like that. Lithium batteries are better in a few other minor ways too, but they are more expensive. I find it a good tradeoff such that I leave lithium batteries in all my emergency items, but I also store some rechargeable batteries for occasional non-emergency use as well as for longer term emergencies, along with their chargers.
@@Zednor9 thanks! I knew about the alkaline corroding but wasn’t sure about the lithium.
It's always best to take batteries out of devices for storage. They can corrode and destroy the device that they are in.
