Big note on the films: which ones to use will depend more on the housing on your switches than your desired thockiness. For high quality switches with smaller housing tolerances you probably want to avoid going any thicker than 0.15 (for Tealios I think 0.12 is actually better), anything thicker and you're just increasing strain on the tensioners instead of removing more rattle.
@@avalanchefrog8500 I think .15 would suit the gateron housing fine without introducing strain, though if you don't want as much thock .12 will effect the pitch less. I just recently used .15 films on some Tealios V2s and I'm extremely pleased with the results. The housing is gateron branded but I don't know if that just means they used refurbed molds or if they're straight from gateron, though.
I recently got some TX films (0.125 mm i think) to try on some Gat Yellows and they made the housing not able to close properly and the top housing would probably pop off at some point if I keep them on, so no films for those.
@@zand6969 You must've gotten an amazing production batch, .12 should fit in just about any switch housing. In cases like that films aren't necessary, housing rattle would be at a minimum. So I guess the best advice is to buy more switches than you need and do some lube and film tests with the extras to determine the best course of action.
Ohhh my god was just about to basically make this entire build. Thank you so so much for the suggestions and noting that brass isn't the best when it comes to this build. You've saved me one hell of a headache Hamaji, thanks for all you do💙
For keeb lovers looking for a thockier sound profile, i would highly suggest trying out a FR4(same material as pcbs) plate or polycarbonate plate. The more flexible, softer plate material really makes the downward key strokes more bassy, and overall “thockier”, when compared to the metal plates (brass, aluminium)
I'm really enjoying this series on your 1st custom mech keeb. I built the same model, the KBDFans 75v2, so it's been quite relevant for me. On the topic of a adding foam, either with the KBDFans own foam insert or instead of it - I have a suggestion. Use a custom cut piece of Sorbothane. I used 2 different thickness - 1/8" and 1/10"; one being 40 Duro, the other 50 Duro (I specifically did this since there is a cutout on the inside of the bottom plate of the 75v2 & I wanted my sorbothane insert to fit perfectly). If you want to keep things simpler; a single 6'x12' sheet of 40 Duro Sorbothane will do the job. It is the ultimate sound & vibration dampening material. I even added some to the inside of my spacebar & both Shift keys. It worked wonders! I love the deep, low 'thockiness' of my keeb without any added ping from any of the plastic parts (keycaps, stabs, etc).
i honestly love all of your videos. they're so high quality and the editing is everything! this hobby is so expensive and I doubt i'll ever get into it, but i definitely love watching it!
Hey man just want to say you inspired me to build my first keyboard. I watched your first build vid when it came out months ago. Then I saw this upgrade vid and wanted one so bad. So I’m doing it! Kbd 75 with brass plate, black inks will be lubed and filmed, zeal clear screw in stabs, gmk white on black, and a custom cable of some sort (haven’t decided yet). Thank you for your videos they are awesome to watch.
Lol I’m doing this same thing right now with rebuilding my kbd75v2, but I added the hipyotech pcb tape mod and some screw in stabs. I also soldered millimax sockets to mine so it could be hotswap. Great vid, that gold colored plate is sick btw
it was quite pleasant to see the process of redoing it all and doing it better. that's what life is all about, learning from mistakes and making things more improved. We as humans have it in our nature to not be happy with what we have, and in this case it's a good thing
i read the comments thinking that the sound would be one for one, but the change was very noticeable! My ears are very sensitive to the little click when you typed on the original, so the upgrade made a big difference to me
I just filmed my Holy Pandas with Deskeys films yesterday after using them only lubed for months. The switches have a much more consistent sound profile once films have been applied. Love the great content man. Keep it up!
Clip in stabilizers aren't always bad, the main issue is they are prone to popping out of the PCB if handled incorrectly during transport. The main difference you noticed is most likely due to not band aid modding your stabs.
Great video! I'd recommend doing the "before" before the "after" for the typing test though, always just seems a little more hype when it's done in that order
Thanks for uploading such good videos. I was sad and I watched this video and I was much less sad and it’s very cool to know about something that seems so simple yet so complicated.
just remembered your name and was like where do i know that from? looked you up on youtube and was like oh its this guy. Love the vids! Keep it up! Subbed
Just as a little thing I learned from wildcat, there is something you can do to straighten the wires of a stabilizer. You can just watch one of his videos to see how he does it. Or follow what this next part says You can get something that has a flat surface like the back of a phone or a preamp, something like that, take apart two pens and get rid of the ink, and use that to straighten them. Place the wire on the flat surface and tap each end of the wire. If there is no rattle on either side, that wire is ok, but if there is any rattle on one side, then use the pens: insert each end of the wire into the pens, and twist the wire the correct way by pushing or pulling the pens opposite ways. Then place the stabilizer onto the surface and tap both ends; repeat until there is no rattle left in the stab
glad to see the progress. keep it up! also this is preference, but i dont really find 8008 matching well with the black/brass case design. i feel like a nice WOB set would definitely integrate the entire build much nicer. but PREFERENCE
looks like your solder joints need a tiny bit more heat. After you feed all the solder in, keep the iron there for an extra like second or two and you'll see the solder drop down into the joint and you'll get a better, more solid joint
I know nothing about keyboards, but these videos are very calming to watch. But honestly i really need to get a new keyboard myself, mine sounds god awful
Have you watched Nathan's subathon ? At some point, there was an entire discussion going on about lubing stabs. Plug the butt is definitely the way to go, BUT i have to agree with Nathan .. 1) you have more control injecting it rather than stuffing it and 2) using 205g0 is just more refined . I got those same injection needles from his Amazon storefront, and they are very good indeed. I even filled one of the needles with dielectric grease. I used that specific grease-needle to fill the hole that holds the bend of the stab-bar itself. Normally, when you grease up the bend of the bar with a brush , and you then force-click it into the hole, then the grease gets pushed up and to the sides. Injecting the hole with grease FIRST will allow the bar to be "dropped" into the greased-up hole. Hope you can visualize this a bit,
Regarding foam for the keyboard, I was thinking that flexi Seal liquid might be a nice new option for insulating and helping with sound on keyboards. You can paint it on and make it as thin or thick as you want and you can build it up in more recessed areas and even paint the sides a bit. Maybe on my next keyboard.
If you still want to try some kind of foam, might I suggest sorbathene? It’s definitely harder to work with than your average foam but it’s just *so good* at eliminating any hollowness the KBD75 has and it really helps the thock
i've stopped band-aiding the stabs since it makes those keys mushy when bottoming out and i haven't found that much benefits to it except maybe silencing the stabs a little
I've had a lot of issues with the Durock spacebar stabilizers rattling (even when heavily lubed as well). The issue is caused by how the wire sits within the the stem's housing; there's still a lil bit of space where the wire would hit the top of the stem's interior. That's why plugging the butt really mutes the ticking/rattle sound of the stabilizers, as it simply fills the empty space between the wire and the housing. I would recommend trying out ZealPC's stabilizers, as the wire and the stem housing are extremely tight; minimizing the potential of rattle/ticking of the wire to the stem housing. Though, they're crazy expensive and shipping is frankly ridiculous....
hamaji you have to try the gateron optical blacks,,,,, if you like the ink blacks, you will really like the opticals especially the price of the keyboards with them
