I just have to tell you you do a great job telling people how many pieces to cut then a beginner can know that they are going to need a lot more that 1 piece of each pattern piece. Some of the bag makers have tutorials that only show you to cut 1 piece of anything and that does'nt register with a beginner that they need all those pieces so they end up with 1/2 of a bag. Great job... I have been teaching sewing most of my adult life and sewing since I was 5 and I am now 72 and have made many many bags and many other things. Sewing is a wonderful craft. Everyone should give it a try.......

This is my favorite style of bag - hands down! I've watched a ton of videos on bag making and have yet to make one. I think I'm going to try the Heidi fold over clutch first. I've made lots of pouches and totes but never one that is a "handbag".
I love how you pay attention to details. Very nice job! Someone here suggested using wonder tape for your side connectors and they are not wrong! I use double sided leather tape when I work with vinyl or leather and it is a life saver. You can always position it in a way you don’t have to sew over it if you are afraid of it gumming up the needle. Give a try and you will be hooked! Beautiful bag and job. ❤️❤️ Love it!
Why do I make things so much harder than they need to be? I'm grateful for the tips! I was wondering if double sided tape would stick to that shiny vinyl (not before I made the bag, but just now) and I like the idea of a leather tape. I'm looking it up right now! Thank you Madeline!

Jess, that was an AMAZING tutorial/video. Although I don’t think I will make that particular pattern you really showed me some new things. Thank you so much! Yea, the Carter is a bit intimidating. I want to make sure to share my challenges, because many viewers have awesome tips to make those parts easier. We are all learning together!
You can use a small scrap of wood rather than your cutting board but also be careful with metal hammer that you don’t create a mushroom, you don’t want a sliver that could break off. Hard rubber is safest.
Only just found your videos and have to say I love watching them. Thank you for sharing your talent and advice on the changes you made and showing the different strap measurement placement when done. Many thanks again. Alison (London, UK)

I really love this bag. So much, that I bought the pattern. I live in Germany and it's a little bit tricky - cause we don't measure up in inch. But I try - with your help. Thank you. I love all your videos - even thou I don't understand everything. Sewing connects... So let's get started...
Please please please make it biggggger! I was going to purchase yesterday when I saw the bag online (as soon as you mentioned pay for it, I went to swoon) but I wasn’t interested because it’s so small. Great idea and I can’t wait!!!!!
Chicago Screws are for leather work, but they're cute so using them as a bag rivet is a cool idea. For this application, you need to add a drop of super glue into the female end before screwing them in. Saddle makers use these in making Tack, and I've seen them use Nail Polish on the screw threads before screwing them in. These are professionals and I love that they use clear nail polish. It has the built in brush, right? They are notorious for coming loose, the screws, not the saddle makers, lol, and your client might lose that top piece and that will be a problem. I use them in leather bag work. Cute bag and a great tutorial.

I've used punches for years in doing leather work and one thing I would strongly recommend is NOT using a metal hammer. I know it's the only thing a lot of people have but if you want your punch to last, find a poly or even a rawhide mallet. The punch is not designed to stand up to repeated metal on metal blows and the top of it will mushroom out over time.
I’m making this bag now cut all the pattern pieces out today Wish you had done the magnetic Snaps as that’s what I’m going to use unless I can pick up some locks like yours tomorrow morning lol So stressed want it to go so well wish me luck x
Some good double sided tape would have been a big help for this project! I also think I’d use some LocTite on the screws to keep them from working their way unscrewed.
I bought this pattern and I am waiting for my new industrial Juki t sewing machine to be delivered ,so I can make this bag. Thank you for showing how to make it.
Nice bag. Great video tutorial too. I am thinking I can adapt that pattern to make it with Leather. When you use a metal hole punch do not use a metal hammer. You should always use a wooden or HDPE mallet or Maul to strike the punch. Metal on metal is bad for the punch and you can hurt yourself too. I also use double sided tape for holding pieces of cloth or leather in place.
I have this pattern from the carried away pattern club and have never thought I would make it but now I see yours and how cute it can really be and I totally want to make one now! After Christmas sewing is over I’m making one. 😉
I need to stop following you...not really🥰...but I want to make everything you demonstrate!!!! I need to walk away & get back to my orders😊💗 I’ll add this to my to-do list🤣
Thank you for this video! I've had this pattern since the subscription release, and was super intimidated by it. One small suggestion for your hole punch, they make special mats for leather working that would be perfect. It's a thick (½") plastic that won't dull your tools.
I love your videos! Just a suggestion, when you get to the side panel connectors, wonder tape might help to hold them in place until you top stitch them.
Thank you for that tip Mary! I was really struggling with those side panels. I always forget about wonder tape until I'm totally done with the bag (or until someone like yourself reminds me).
I was going to suggest that also... Double sided tape would hold those folds of the straps down instead of clipping them...and would also take less time...
Oh no, Sara! Be careful going in the Bernina store... they are just so persuasive! (But if you do get a new one make sure to tell me all about it. I love those beauties!)
It 100% depends on the vinyl you're using. I've found some completely impossible to sew with. I like a thinner vinyl that isn't very sticky. Cork is also a great option!
Oh Jess, I love your videos, I purchased the Carter 6 month ago and only today started it with this video. You are my fave tutorial gal to watch, how do I show you my finished carter💖💖💖
Thanks so much for this video! I've had this pattern but have been too scared to try because it seemed too difficult. This video made me realize I might be able to tackle it. :) I would love to see a tutorial on the Denver backpack!!
Are there ends you can put on the ends of the two ends of the accent straps that go over the top of the bag and down the front to give them more of a fi shed look?
I've watched a lot of your bag videos, but I'm wondering if you ever use just cloth? Seems like everything you make uses vinyl or something besides cotton.
I am just hitting my head against the wall today. I'm the only one that didn't think of this! 🤣Thank you for the suggestion, I can't believe that idea didn't come to me. I was thinking of some pretty crazy ways to attach those dang tabs, too!
I love your videos! I actually turn them into leather bags though. :) A tip for the punches... use a rubber mallet so you don't damage the punch over time. They also make a hand rivet set that is very inexpensive. If you want the link, let me know.
Where do you get your pretty vinyl fabric? Can you explain this Backstitch fabric thing. Is it a site, or you can only purchase when they haven inventory? Thanks.
I do feel confident in trying this bag thanks to you....I definitely have to find the perfect fabric, not sure if my machine will be able to handle vinyl. I might have to dig into my Ankara fabric stash and find something there. Fast question: would using an oilcloth fabric work for the straps, etc?
You can do it Lynette! Yes, the vinyl was giving my machine trouble as well. I prefer cork or canvas. If you use oilcloth for the straps just interface it with some pellon sf101 and you just be fine! Let me know how it turns out!
I always put a piece of wood under the die when punching the holes... that way you dont ruin your cutting mat... a 1x6 is way cheaper than a cutting mat... also I dont think the wood would dull the die as fast.
I seriously love your tips and teaching style!! You really hit the mark for the true beginner. I have been binge watching your videos since I recently found your tutorials. I have a question about the vinyls......can you use the vinyl found in the craft store in the cricut section or are those a different vinyl??
Those are usually heat transfer vinyls and aren't meant for sewing. I know, they are so SO PRETTY, I want to use them on everything as well. But you'll have more luck shopping for vinyl from sites like My PunkBroidery : mypunkbroidery.com/
Loved the choice of fabric,..... with the first Carter bag you displayed completed!... (Oh would love to know where you got that gold tone for the straps on your sample bag!).... GORGEOUS!!!!....
Does anyone have a Janome S7, sewing machine, and have created this beauty?.... or is this more of a project for an industrial sewing machine?.... any help is appreciated!...thanks!
I'm new to your channel and love it! Just a suggestion if others have not said so, Bernina makes several coated feet that are used for sticky fabrics. Have you considered trying some of those?
I am in love with this bag! Making it for my daughter for Christmas. Decided to try Chicago screws. I am also ordering them from Emalline bags. What size did you use? The medium 6mm or the large 10mm ? The rivet size in the pattern says 9mm. But wasn't for sure fir the Chicago screws.I tried to tell in your video which size but couldn't tell for sure. Thanks!
I'm a bit confused on what size screw rivets you used. I have no experience with rivets at all. Can you clarify? The pattern only indicates Medium. Not sure what their definition of medium is. Thanks.
So here is a link for the Chicago Screws I used: emmalinebags.com/collections/bag-hardware/products/chicago-screws-medium-size-1-4-or-6-mm-in-iridescent-rainbow-20-pack

Hi Jess. I have been enjoying your tutorials. I have just finished making one of the wallets. Could you please tell me about the light blue fabric you used on the Carter Bag.
I'm so excited. Got all my hardware in, got all my fabric cut and fused. Nervous to get started. I did buy some of that decovil light you mentioned in another video. Is that to be used only with woven or can I use it with cork for my strap?
I'm so excited for you! Carter can be tricky, take it slow and take breaks. I wouldn't use any interfacing with cork, it's strong enough on its own. I really like the decovil light with quilt cotton.
Great tutorial!! Jess, would you mind sharing the fabric you used for the bag you showed at the beginning of the video, the one with cork? It's sooooooo beautiful :)

I had no idea about the metal on metal! Thank you for that advice.
@@OklaRoots Your welcome.
Also if you do need to punch holes in anything in the future. Use an old HDPE Plastic cutting board underneath. Or even a block of wood.
I really enjoy your tutorials! Thank you!
Thank you Debbi!
I have this pattern from the carried away pattern club and have never thought I would make it but now I see yours and how cute it can really be and I totally want to make one now! After Christmas sewing is over I’m making one. 😉
Thank you Melanie! I think you'll like this one. The shape is just SO cute! Let me know if you make one!
I need to stop following you...not really🥰...but I want to make everything you demonstrate!!!! I need to walk away & get back to my orders😊💗 I’ll add this to my to-do list🤣
Haha I know the feeling! I want to make all the things, which is how the channel started. These videos will be here whenever you're ready!
Thank you for this video! I've had this pattern since the subscription release, and was super intimidated by it. One small suggestion for your hole punch, they make special mats for leather working that would be perfect. It's a thick (½") plastic that won't dull your tools.
Thanks Holly! I'll have to look into that.
Thanks again Jess! I just purchased this pattern and am anxious to start it!
Yay!! I think you'll like it. Take it slow. Let me know if you make one!
Great job!!! Love that bag!
Lots of work. Glad to see hardware used without having to buy a rivot press.
Beutiful bag thank you for shering your video from Michelle in australia
You are magical!
You’re a fabulous instructor. Love he video! Suggestion : double sided tape works great with cork and vinyl.
Thank you Sheila!! I have got to to remember the double sided tape next time.
This! Wawak.com sells some that is amazing!
Great tutorial!!!! I have an older Bernina that doesn’t have an even feed. Making me want to get a new one!
Oh no, Sara! Be careful going in the Bernina store... they are just so persuasive! (But if you do get a new one make sure to tell me all about it. I love those beauties!)
I enjoyed your video! Try using masking tape instead of washi tape for the straight lines. I've been using it for quilting for years
Hi Jess, thanks for a great tutorial! I'm trying to make this bag now & find sewing vinyl straps really hard 😌😌... you make it look so easy! 😅
You can send me an email at Jessica@oklaroots.com or tag me on social media (I'm @oklaroots). I can't wait to see it!
@@OklaRoots will send you pics, so funny is the one I made😂😂😂
Thanks so much for this video! I've had this pattern but have been too scared to try because it seemed too difficult. This video made me realize I might be able to tackle it. :) I would love to see a tutorial on the Denver backpack!!
You can definitely do it Anna! Let me know if you make one.
I'll have to try this after Christmas
Let me know how it goes, Mary-Ann!
Are there ends you can put on the ends of the two ends of the accent straps that go over the top of the bag and down the front to give them more of a fi shed look?
Great video! Thank you so much!
Thank you Mirjam!
I've watched a lot of your bag videos, but I'm wondering if you ever use just cloth? Seems like everything you make uses vinyl or something besides cotton.
Why don’t you use double sided tape for your side panel strap connectors. Sometimes the scotch tape will mess up the vinyl
Thank you Teri!
I love this but def want the bigger version you mentioned. Did you happen to make that video yet?
That's a fantastic idea! I'll do that next time. Thank you!
@@OklaRoots you are so welcome... I do a lot with the rivets and dont have a press... so I have learned some things about that.
Isn't this bag amazing?? It's such a fun design. I get all my bag hardware from Emmaline Bags. They have SO many fun options.

Hey Teresa! I do have a couple of the silicone feet. I'll show them in other videos.
Thanks!
I used the medium size, but honestly either would be perfect. Let me know how it goes!
Super mam your explaining
If I’m using faux leather for my contrasting fabric, won’t I need to line that with something
I love this bag 😊
I was wandering where you get your vinyl? the variety of colors you used is very nice.
So the vinyl here is from Sew Sweetness. I have also purchased some new colors from My Punk Broidery which are absolutely stunning.
I've just bought this pattern and thought it a bit small for a messenger to I sized up about 10% when I printed the pattern. Then wondered if there is a tutorial and found this! 😊. In your intro, you also mention you think it's a bit small and said you're planning on making it bigger. Did you ever do that?
No I haven't yet. Are you working on the bag? Let me know how it goes!
Where do you get your nice fabric. I never find fabric you use
I can’t wait to start this!!! Which link is for the rivet press and which dies did you use ?? Great video ❤️❤️

Hi Jess. I have been enjoying your tutorials. I have just finished making one of the wallets. Could you please tell me about the light blue fabric you used on the Carter Bag.
Hi Mel! That light blue fabric is by April Rhodes with Art Gallery Fabrics.
Thank you.
I've broken 3 needles. What the heck?? Lol..
On the first purse you showed with the cork, did you use magnetic snaps? If so, how did you do it with the cork tabs? Thanks.
Nvm, I got it. Thanks.
Great tutorial!! Jess, would you mind sharing the fabric you used for the bag you showed at the beginning of the video, the one with cork? It's sooooooo beautiful :)
That is part of April Rhodes line Observer. It's an older line, so may be difficult to find liveartgalleryfabrics.com/observer/
@@OklaRoots Thank you!
Who is it for? I would love for you to include a picture at the end of the videos when you give it away
Awww that is such a great idea!
