Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is an action role-playing game developed and published by Square Enix. It is a sequel to Final Fantasy VII Remake (2020) and the second in a planned trilogy of games remaking the 1997 PlayStation game Final Fantasy VII.
Like its predecessor, the gameplay combines real-time action with strategic and role-playing elements. Set immediately after Remake's events, players control mercenary Cloud Strife and a party of characters principally comprising the eco-terrorist group AVALANCHE, who embark on a journey across the Planet to prevent the megacorporation Shinra from exploiting its life essence, the Lifestream, as an energy source, and defeat former elite SOLDIER Sephiroth, who seeks to unite with the Planet to achieve greater power.

What i want to see doesn't exist anymore. The writing went out of its way to destroy all narrative coherence at (what should have been) the very payoff of the story. And if it can do that, then there's no meaning anymore that is or isn't feasible or even possible in the setting. When you're playing Part 3, anything you see the narrative build up to - up to and including the ending - simply doesn't matter. Toriyama can just snap his fingers and have the narrative take not a turn so much as a full-on teleport into something completely nonsensical and it will completely align with the bar the story's writing has set for itself with this ending. It has completely divested itself of the burden of narrative cohesion, and so any outcome to this former story is now just as acceptable as any other. Sephiroth's head can open up and Homer Simpson can fly out of it, and not only will that be in line with the standard of narrative quality they've set themselves, most of the fandom will trick themselves into thinking it's quality writing and not only accept it, they will attack anyone that tries to detract from it.

@@GamingwTallenVill eventually deleted my comment its all good man haha i am just tired i can make valid points that would be even more page full, but its all about the world not the ending, i think the world and journey should be just as important as the more love you give the more it will break you during those crucial moments. It should be more magic more summons actual summoning more limit breaks etc.
Also Sadly instead of having a moment and the value of death and the value of life they want to push that later on in the game. Its so dependent on that.
its why its so important to make it simple in the third act however because people keep saying we have to wait for part 3 i keep looking and going well if i have to wait for part 3 why is this special.
And its not driving me to play again its very long tedious furiously hard with some mini games think its a very unfinished product with nothing to do and offer. Very dull and boring vacuuming should not be a thing. I think it completly misses the atmoshpere of change, no day/night cycles, no weather, no rdr2 atmosphere, not enough content of our characters being flesh out. Fucking chadley overstays his welcome shouldn't even be in this fucking game he gets more screen time then anyone which could of been spent on cid or vincent.
why are you gonna play this game again. What experienced have you gain that was so fun ?
There more wow and atmosphere in little nightmares which is like a 2hr game then this.
You can have one npc from a souls game a 100% more interesting then any of the npc in this game.
As for the world space itself its nice but again its no rdr2. The terrain is all mountains rocks and not enough wide smooth hilly places. Shit botw was smoothe. And even the plane in the ocean there fucking rocks in the ocean... Its an open space but like what have you been doing. Instead of changing the mansion by adding a fucking underground battle system which we have in the gold saucer and prison its like repetitive shit.
      Change for change.
I won't even mention story from the simplest thing like nibelheim it works better when everyone thinks your crazy and it never burned down but noped.
Its just ashame that this is what people get esp the new generation and i doubt there be sharing the great masterpiece experience of yeh hey i had to vaccuum some mako it made me laugh cry change my world forever.
easily the worst padded game ive seen and it didnt need it if they stopped this shit in remake and rebirth you me and everyone coukd had not only ff7 but a ff7 what if.
But i'm sure in part 3 there be a mini game where clouds mr plow shovelling snow for some poor animal thats gone missing.
Heck if they took chadley out replaced it with a proper reward system like the good old days when you found bahamut in the ancient temple.
Or spoke to a chocobo that gave you a funky memorable dance.
I can throw some ideas instantly to make the game better and that should be basic things about the party you travel with on this pilgrimage.
Camping, cooking, hey reach a tavern in gongaga why not have a drinking match with tifa or barret or vincent. Optional unknown Experiences you bump into.
Hey you slept at Inn and had a trippy dream maybe its sephiroth maybe irs just a bad dream.
Instead were overloaded with information that will die out and the only reason to play this is if you want to see.
I would take out chapters cue titles chapter titles yellow markers that tell me where to climb anything that says this is a game. Its fucking riduclous.

I walked away thinking that it was Jenova in the end. It's hard to think that's not Jenova at the end when in the Temple of the Ancients the Cetra say the following when speaking about Jenova: "A deceiver that stole the faces of the dead-of mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers lost. with their voices did it so the seeds of Discord among our people-among the children of man". This would explain why Cloud is acting strange. And it's totally possible that Jenova could fool Red. I guess we'll find out in part 3.

I don't think that's a Jenova version of Aerith. It's the real physical Aerith that Cloud did save and has split off into another timeline. Here's the context:
Zack was saved at the end of Remake, but his new timeline was separate from the primary timeline and thus nobody noticed him as they walked past each other in the same spot outside of Midgar. But Zack is still dead in the events of the primary timeline because the events of the original still need to take place unchanged.
Aerith was saved after Cloud successfully blocked Sephiroth's attack towards the end of Rebirth, but because that action by Cloud changed the course of the primary timeline, a separate timeline branched off from the primary with Aerith now alive. Cloud was reinserted into the primary timeline after the battle with Sephiroth at the edge of Creation in Rebirth, but his mind is still very much fractured. Cloud in one way or another is acting as a conduit between the primary timeline where Aerith is dead and the timeline where Aerith is physically alive. But similar to Remake where Zack and Cloud's party cannot see each other outside of Midgar, nobody can see Aerith. Except the key difference is that Aerith is able see the events happening in the timeline where she originally died.
The reason Cloud can see the physically alive Aerith in the other timeline I suspect has to do with the black materia. It's the key the links the worlds together, and also summons Meteor but we'll cross that bridge later. Cloud's actions by saving Aerith might have also linked them together across the timelines, and the rainbow halo the surrounds Aerith at the alter signifies that in some way. When Cloud crosses that rainbow boundary, he can interact with the physically alive Aerith that he saved because that rainbow effect is a boundary that separates the parallel timelines. But if Aerith steps outside of that rainbow boundary, she crosses into the timeline where she is physically dead and nobody except Cloud can interact with her.

I don't like subscribing to theories too much, but yours is the closest thing I would consider to what's actually happening... especially when you point out how Zack and Cloud aren't noticed when they passed by Cloud and Aerith at the end of Remake. I was wondering how that "rainbow halo" thing worked, but having Cloud being trapped between two worlds makes sense, especially given how he possesses the black materia. And Sephiroth does, in fact, say that the black materia is the key between worlds. That might explain how Sephiroth (Jenova) is able to cross between the worlds in order to hunt down Aerith.

    • @rsoxboy
      @rsoxboy Місяць тому +7

@@TallDarkRetro Another key detail that I don't think many people are noticing is that only Cloud walks through the "portal" made through the wall of whispers that were blocking the entrance to the building with the altar. At the end of Remake, everyone walked through the portals on the expressway. But this time only Cloud does. I think that detail has gone almost entirely unnoticed by the Rebirth community so far.
But anyway the details of the how and why may not be totally correct, but the entire context of the games so far set the stage for two different timelines regarding regarding Aerith's fate. And I just don't think Square would toy with the audience and players by showing Aerith as a hallucination or illusion at the end of the game. And even though that Aerith can't have direct interactions with anyone in the group except Cloud, she's still very tuned into the emotional tone of the moment. The comforting hand she puts on Red and the look of regret she shows by being unable to comfort a grieving Tifa depict an Aerith who is aware of what's happening, not a disconnected projection from Cloud's mind.
Also I went back and watched the scene where the rest of the group runs to the altar the first time. Square purposely shows the first person perspectives of Barret and Tifa back to back. Barret only sees the version of Aerith with the mortal wound. Tifa interestingly does see the two alternative scenarios flashing in and out, but it mostly settles on the scenario of Aerith bleeding. But Square very deliberately and obviously shows that Tifa has some kind of window into the perspective where Aerith survived.

@@rsoxboyoh really?! I just beat it last night and missed that, but to be fair a lot was going down lol If that is the case with Tifa, my guess is she was able to see flickers of the other timeline in that moment bc of her trip to the Lifestream in Gongaga, just as I think Cloud can see the other Aerith that survived in an altered timeline (bc I agree with the original poster of this thread's comment) bc he'd previously been pulled through timelines with Aerith and Sephiroth. Kind of like how only Aerith could see the Whispers originally, but once a person was touched by her, then they could also see them, and then as they touched others the ability spread. I think it's the same idea, but actually having visited another timeline opens up that ability, or in Tifa's case, being in the LS gave her a little of that since all these worlds are ultimately connected through the LS. It just wasn't enough to overcome her reality and see the other one/see Aerith survive.

I've had the idea that Jenova has been behind all this for a hot minute now. Pretty much when Remake came out as the dots started to connect. I actually enjoy that it really opens up the possibility of many theories with all the “What is fact and what is fiction?” thing, but personally I’d say the Aerith Cloud sees is the Aerith who survived who can communicate with Cloud since he was the one who divided the timeline. Cloud is still fairly mentally disturbed my Jenova and it’s clear because of what the black materia is doing to him, but I actually think Aerith knows this and she’s kinda working his way around it to make her plan to stop Sephiroth work even if Cloud is still broken.

I don't have the best grasp of the ending but for my thoughts, I think there's three Aeriths: (1) a Jenova shapeshifter, (2) the Aerith in a alternate timeline from when Cloud blocked Sephiroth's sword and (3) the lifestream Aerith who said farewell to the team at the ending scene. Though 2 & 3 could be the same given Aerith's godlike abilities. The most likely Jenova shapeshifter is the one at the temple of the ancients because that scene was creepy to me. The reason I think Jenova is in-play is because Sephiroth's mention of her ability, should have some type of payoff. Sephiroth only used it, to persuade Cloud about Tifa not being real but he's probably being strategic and sees Aerith's "death" as an opportunity to further break Cloud's psych. Cloud was already in a fragile state in the temple of the ancient's where they brought up Cloud being unable to cope or mourn for the deaths of Biggs or Jessie this will fuel Sephiroth's monolog at the Northern crater when he lists Cloud's failures/false persona. Overall, real or fake Aerith being there in Cloud's head isn't helping our guy right now.

Counter argument to Jenova Aerith sending cloud to face Sephiroth on purpose being off compared to what she said earlier; Lifestream: White II has pretty much an identical situation, she doesn't really want Cloud to have to deal Sephiroth because it will hurt him but she has to leave it to him. There's a longer counter argument to the "Jenova Aerith" theory but short version, the little snipets of dialogue in the battle don't really makes sense, if anything Sephiroth seems out of the loop. She says "I saw what you did back there, Cloud. Thank you." which means from that Aerith's perspective cloud did deflect the blade (I don't think that is a Jenova trick as the glitch happens after he does it but not really the point). If that's not Jenova Aerith then when Cloud deflects the blade and when he wakes her up doesn't make sense either. After the fight when Cloud walks through the white whispers and the other party members disappear there isn't the glitching that signifies Jenova information being sent to Cloud, there's the world crossing aurora. Also the other party members can't see those whispers. The Jenova glitching happens when a Cloud who is mourning with the other sees Aerith and isn't thrown by it. So maybe from that point on, but why? Jenova/Sephiroth didn't do that in the original, Cloud still went to the Northern Crater. Also the tear in the sky isn't being shown to him by Jenova and isn't just a delusion, note how Remake was recently patched to change Aerith's English dialogue to suggest she can see something in the sky at the end of the game. Also we are missing whatever happens between cloud waking Aerith and the party sitting together by the water. Jenova illusion, delusion, or some value of real there has to be a conversation there we aren't being shown, and that is a huge piece of a the puzzle.
My Theory (with the usual just a theory disclaimer) is that it sort of is Jenova phenomena but the source isn't Jenova or Sephiroth, it is Cloud. Cloud can see things the others can't that can not be dismissed as illusions right from the start of Remake, the mechanism for his expanded awareness is Jenova cells. Cloud's consciousness is expanding to span worlds, like Sephiroth and Aerith. We already see this happen when he sees into the world which Zack is experiencing on the edge of sleep.

That all dreams and memories pass into the life stream and those can become their own history and “life” of its own not showing any signs of being able to distinguish what’s reality and not. It makes somewhat more complicated but more fascinating than just twenty angry clouds waiting at the end for sephiroth to show up.

While I understand the detractors to the changes (and the too many things to do with side quests and minigames), I have loved seeing the character growth and the softening of Cloud from super cold robot to at least showing his humanity on a more regular basis. I am of the opinion that Sephiroth is from Advent Children (some music in Remake, plus the arbiters at the end that seemed similar to the antagonists of Advent Children), but this game through my guesses out of the water and expanded on them, so I can't wait to see how this story will unfold. She is dead, but her lifestream presence is still in contact with Cloud, and just noticeable for Nanaki. Whether he really sees her or can talk to her I don’t know for sure. This might also be a representation of her presence. At the same time it is clear to me that the reality of the loss of Aerith hasn't really sank in yet. What might play a part is that Cloud seems to dissociate a lot: emotionally, repressed memories and maybe here the full extent of reality. Cloud his trauma response is way different from the others in that it is offerd through an unreliable first person perspective. Cloud thinks himself to be the tough one and doesn't even realise or outright blocks out that he suffers from Trauma. In remake he is introduced as being haughty and uncaring: he is Ex-Soldier and only cares about the money. That what doesn't affect you can not hurt you. Tifa finds this to be unsetlling, because this is not the Cloud she has known, so she takes him along and he becomes her ´project´. Cloud starts noticing that things ar not right, confesses that to Tifa, but still keeps denying it at the same time. He doesn’t know what he experiences in this dissociative split mind of his. Even in the forrest with Aerith after all that has happened he still keeps up that he is fine. This, along with his trial in the temple is just the introduction. all the while the flashbacks he has start to tell a different story, that all is not well behind that huge emotional wall of his. He knew Zack, indeed how could he forget that? These realisations frighten him, so he kind of blocks them out. As Aerith dies he kind of breaks and along with him the player falls in and out of reality. Aerith Lifestream presense might be there, but not necessarily in the form that he sees. He just can't accept that she is really gone. The world he sees has a great rift and while it might be really there in some level of reality, I rather accept it as something symbolic for Clouds mental state. The dissociative world in himself is ripped up. Before his date with Aerith she warns him to "not look up, because he would not like what he would see". I gather she would be warning for the comet that must be there looming somewhere also, but he only sees the rift that that splits his dissociative mind. After her death he alone sees the same rift and warns the others to "not look at it, because it is just an illusion". All the while a broken Cloud is a dangerous Cloud, because off balance he can be easily manipulated by Sephiroth. In that respect the scene in the void is also very important. Sephiroth places himself in front of the specific portal Cloud will fall through, because he knows that Cloud will strike at him. Thus he gives him "his blessing." He guides him back into this world to be reunited with his body. and indeed in what way did Cloud get the "real black materia counterpart" from the void? only time will tell.

  • @iNsOmNiAcAnDrEw
    @iNsOmNiAcAnDrEw Місяць тому +1

I don't think there was meant to be that much thought behind what Sephiroth said 'very poor form' versus 'you need to be punished' it's practically the same thing as 'that was a jerk thing to do' he's basically just complaining is how I see it... Sephiroth isn't the only person saying completely different stuff in these games... Barret and Euphie do it a lot as well between English and Japanese... if you want a game where they say mostly the same stuff you should try out Triangle Strategy, I loved the English voice acting in that game, it was so good! The Japanese was usually pretty good too but Benedict in particular I felt was lacking in Japanese and was enough for me to mostly stick with English.

I beat the game about a week ago and i have been sitting on this thought for a while now. The game start and end seem to me to be running parallel to each other thematically. We start off with Cloud telling his version of events of what happened to him in nibelheim there is even a point when he is going to try to get to his mother and you have to that crawling around thing with the triggers, we never see the how the entire scene play out to full and we know that cloud has blocked out a portion of what has happened and rewrote it in his memories. Now when we get to the scene when cloud is chasing after Aerith in the forest you are doing the same trigger actions that you did trying to save his mother. In this universe Cloud has failed to save his mother and Aerith from being killed by Sephiroth. So now when you get to the end when you see Clouds sword deflect the masamune you see the rainbow light that I believe is when Cloud is creating a false memory of what is happening. Then you start to see the scene of the death scene flickering back and forth, sephiroth starts talking about the confluence of worlds which i think is the merging in cloud memories with the false memories. So once again Cloud is blocking out another persons death. So his mind is one plane of existence while his body is in the real one. Which is why i think he can see the lifestream tear in the sky at the end while no one else can. So I think that in Part 3 when Cloud is getting his real memories back we are gonna see the full scene how it really happens and cloud is going to have to come to terms with Aerith death.

Also don't think it's Jenova there, just another Aerith. I think she gave Cloud Holy for him to fill it and find himself, as the other he gave her will be used by her.
Next game will be a banger, as Cloud will get to know that Aerith is actually DEAD, that he didn't save her and it will be mind blowing. The two main instances I can remember is the speech Sephiroth gives before throwing Jenova Emergent at us, and the light show we got at the Temple of the Ancients mentioning that Jenova transformed herself into people that the Cetra were close to, the whole "they say she can become those you hate, those you fear, and those you love" thing going on.

The Ultimania confirmed that Aerith is dead. Cloud's POV on Chapter 14 is supposed to convey the inability to accept the death of a loved one. This is not a multiverse where Aerith survived, these are dream worlds made from the memories, hopes and dreams of the souls in the Lifestream. The fractured sky (seen in the OG Lifestream sequence) means that a dream world is going to fade soon. Cloud, who is attuned to the Lifestream via mako poisoning/S Cells, is literally living in a fantasy world where he saved Aetith bcs he can't cope w/her death. The dream has to end, and Cloud needs to make peace w/himself when he wakes up.

Maybe the one he gave Sephiroth was from this world but in another world maybe he never gave it to him? He took white materia from other world Aerith after all and swapped it with her and thats why he has transparent one in the end.

Considering that Earth fought with Cloud against Sephiroth, and that Sephiroth seems to be a champion of Jenova, it stants to reason that she's now a champion of the planet and that eventually she would be revealed to other party members. Sephiroth was contaminated with Jenova cells, as was Cloud and other soldiers, but Earth was not so she's not vulnerable to Jenova taking her form is the way I look at it. Even though Cloud can theoretically be manipulated by Cloud, he has to die in order for her to take his form. That's why I think him staying alive is important, because the planet (Hoshi) might not be able to use his soul because he may have been exposed to too many of Jenova's cells based on whatever Hojo did to him.

since this video hasn't really blown up yet I think my chances to get some answers are good here
I am playing Final Fantasy for the first time with Rebirth and I have questions about the story so far: I have watched some content of the older games to get answers but nothing really covered me so let me begin:
    1. Why does Tifa or Barret not discuss with Cloud the fact that he is no SOLDIER. I get why Cloud believes he is, given the mako eyes, the mix persona with Zack. But Tifa and Barret know the truth from Hojo in remake.
    2. Is the reason why Tifa says that Cloud's cells won't degrade the fact that she knows he ain't SOLIDER?
    3. Even if the gang keeps their mouth shut about Cloud's SOLIDER status to prevent Cloud from throwing either a tantrum or going beserk, we see Rufus Shinra (who by the way is closely linked to Hojo) refering to Cloud as ex-SOLDIER, when he really has nothing to gain by keeping up with that lie.
    4. Is there a difference when refering to Cloud as A soldier (because he was in shinra at some point) and Cloud being SOLDIER (or in SOLDIER)?
    5. Why did Cloud equip the black materia? I mean Sephiroth asked him to deliver it to him, so maybe a means of hiding it in plain sight?
Now, my thoughts about the ending: it was disturbing to watch. I did not know what the heck was going on. There are 2,3 different versions of everybody, letting Jenova's mimicry ability aside. AND HOW THE HECK IS SEPHIROTH NOT DEAD AFTER All these boss fights?!!!! omg Also the sky in the ending scene where only Cloud can see the opening?! Does this mean that only Cloud can sense the destruction of the planet this early?

    • @DirectGamingYT

So some answers we don't know yet since no part 3 but we can answer some:
      1) Tifa knows but Barret really does not know the full details. Tifa won't tell cloud due to the state of his mind. If you watch clips on the original 1997 game, it gives more detail. Short story is Tifa is worried what it will become of cloud if she tells him. Will he not believe her and leave? Will his mind break? She does not know.
      2) More like he is not showing signs like the others. He is remembering while others get worse. She does not know about the 5 years either.
      3) Rufas has no idea. He is taking Cloud at his word. He is focused on "the promise land" and can't bother to look up those details. Plus he only just became president. (highly recommend playing remake)
      4) Not really. SOLDIER is the program that had the class grades and such. He was simply just an infantry man.
      5) Ya his mind is being controlled by Sephiroth/ Jenova
As for the ending, it helps if you have either played the original or watched some videos. Timeline videos help too.
      Hope this helps.

There's one glaring issue in the idea that Jenova is Aerith in that final scene: Any time Jenova has been wanting Cloud to see Sephiroth there is an element there that is missing from the gang near the Tiny Bronco: There is no piece of Jenova around (i.e. a part of her body OR those individuals in black robes).
Now to be fair I do not believe there is a black robed individual in the alleyway in the first part of Remake. I could chalk that up to Cloud seeing all that fire and having PTSD from Nibelheim though. I could also see that the Jenova cells within Cloud could be heightened when Cloud is quite stressed out but there is no evidence, after Aerith communicates with Cloud that it is okay, that he is stressed out to the max.
Those key details missing leads me to believe there is no way Jenova could impersonate Aerith in Cloud's mind as Jenova typically takes on the form of those that cause dread and despair more than anything (I.e. How it seems the only time Glenn shows up is when Rufus is around, as it seems Glenn is a huge source of despair and misery to Rufus).

@@codynoth4183 There's more left than you think. Bone village, Northern Crater, and Snow village could easily be separate regions. (Look what they did with Corel and Gongaga in Rebirth, they're not shy to flesh out underutilzed regions from the OG)
Then you have Rocket Town, Mideel, and Wutai as well. Not to mention we will have access to a submarine and airship, which I expect them to treat as their own regions as well. Similar to the Tiny Bronco stuff in Rebirth.
The next big game in the SE pipeline is probably Kingdom Hearts 4. I highly doubt we see anything part 3 related until that game is closer to release.

But did Jeno a need a piece of her body around to fool the Cetra and the Gi simultaneously? It seems like she'd have to been able to do it fully telepathically to take down civilizations, and have to be physically around as a single living entity.
I think Sephiroth needs the black robes. I don't know that Jenova needs it. (But maybe she's not as powerful as before because she's mostly just a body in a Hojo test tube these days.)
Another difference is that the Black Materia is in play now. Maybe that changes how she can appear to Cloud specifically as long as it's nearby.

@@gerrya2133 To an extent I do not necessarily believe Jenova had the ability to make the Cetra/Gi hallucinate. I feel that Jenova had to assimilate/transform into the person in order to fool them and spread its cells around in other means. For instance I recall a throwaway line that Jenova was in process of transforming into the "most powerful Cetra" when they imprisoned it. Hence how Jenova's top half looks "human".
You lookk at the Northern Crater and low and behold what is up there? The head and upper body (not lower body) of Sephiroth. Coincidence?
The black robes having enough of Jenova's cells basically means she can hop from any of them as Jenova's cells are a hive mind of sorts. She can create temporary, limited hallucinations in Cloud's mind, but if it wanted to interact with Cloud physically a black robe has to be around OR enough cells gathered it can form one of its more monstrous forms.

Okay hear me out, here’s my theory.
This game is a sequel to the original. Let’s look at the final scene of the OG game. Cloud defeats Sepheroth and stops him from blocking Holy. Meteor is too close to the planet and the lifestream seeps out and forms a protective barrier stopping meteor. The last thing we see are the gang being shrouded in a flash of light and then Aerith looking up at the mako pumes; the music that plays the the same three opening notes to the opening theme.
The scene were Aerith looks up at the pumes is followed by Remakes opening. Aerith stands up and runs out the alleyway with a meter of urgency as opposed to walking out, there a clear distinction between the two openings here. She is next seen being swarmed by whispers. During Remake Cloud sees a vision of Aeriths fate, Marlene see’s something similar and so does Red; all thanks to Aerith.
Towards the end of Remake it’s clear that Aerith seems to understand what’s going on. Once the group leave midgar (in the new update) she says she doesn’t like the sky. This is followed by scenes of Zack surviving the Shinra onslaught.
Then we get to Rebirth. It starts with Zack finding alternate Aerith and Cloud and eventually taking them to Aerith’s house. Eventually he chooses various different choices which split the timeline; a choice to go to the Shinra building, a choice to go see Biggs and a choice to go to the church.
The group go through the usual deals with a few differences here and there (like the scenes in Gongaga). Until we get to the temple. Once the group leave the temple Sepheroth convinces cloud to hand over the black materia but Aerith says it’s a fake (in the original the black materia is the temple itself, however they are never shown to pick it up in Rebirth). Cloud hands it over and then he wakes up in what’s referred to as Aerith’s dreamworld (the world in which Zack went to the church, the timeline where he stayed alive). Aerith’s shows him the crack in the sky and tells him it’s not real; it’s just an illusion (much like the black materia). Aerith hands the white materia to cloud and pushes him back into his own world, meanwhile Zack is forced into an alternate world by Sepheroth as he walks through to Aerith.
Cloud swaps the white materia’s with Aerith and then we get to the scene we were all waiting for. Sepheroth descends onto Aerith but cloud parry’s his attack splitting the timeline just like Zack was doing. Cloud at this point has seen multiple realities and continues to do so thanks to Aerith.
The gang fight Sepheroth and this version of Sepheroth is his first form of the original game bizarro Sepheroth or Sepheroth reborn (whatever you want to call him). This fight takes place across multiple dimensions but 2 things to notice are 1. It’s the same Sepheroth, so he doesn’t seem to have multiple variants and 2. When we play as Zack in the church (the world with the fractured sky) meteor is right there.
At the end cloud tells everyone not to look up at the sky; they do not see what cloud see’s. He says it’s just an illusion echoing Aeriths words. When he puts the empty white materia back it’s revealed that he had the black materia this whole time too; he then gets headaches and says “reunion” as though being manipulated.
So I’ll try and make sense of this the best I can. That fracture in the sky is the protective barrier of the lifestream that engulfed the planet at the end of OG; the visible sign of meteor in this alternate world implies that meteor has already been cast and is in the other side of it; this is why Aerith doesn’t like the sky, she knows what’s in the other side; impending doom. Aerith doesn’t know the future; she knows the past. Everyone is inside the lifestream which has been said to house the memories of all the souls that ever existed; including their own memory’s; which they’re reliving.
Zacks survival and the branching timelines are the effects of Holy. Bugenhagen states that Holy acts as the will of the planet; and that the planet is made up of the lifestream, the lifestream being the souls of all life (alive or dead). Now Zack specifically has the greatest will power of every single character we’ve come to know in this franchise; this is why he has the ability to branch the timelines the way he does; he is acting as the planets will to survive and fight against the calamity (even though he doesn’t realise). This is the magic of Holy at play right now; using the very essence of the planet to fight back against Sepheroth (this includes the main party and Zack).
Now the black materia that cloud has; that’s an illusion, what he’s actually holding is the white materia. Eventually it’s going to get to the point where he will encounter a fractured Sepheroth and will give him the black materia, like in the original; only this time he’ll hand over the white materia. This is sepheroths plan; to use cloud in order to acquire both the black materia and the worn out white materia which I have no doubt he’ll find a use for to undo the current effect of Holy.
This is my theory; it may not be right, but I think it makes the most sense out of any other theories I’ve seen. If you’ve read this far, thanks; that was a lot to get through!

One theory that I heard was that Cloud might be simultaneously living in realities where he DID and DIDN'T save Aerith, and that could be why he can see and communicate with Aerith, but the others can't. Could also be why he can see the rift in the sky but the others can't.
Another thing that I'm surprised that very few content creators are bringing up is how Cloud was the only one who walked through the "Destiny's Crossroads" portal that the Black and White Whispers created. The others stayed put and held the portal open to let Cloud through, which is why they still see the original outcome of Aerith dying in Cloud's arms. And it seems like, since walking through the portal, Cloud is the only one who can see the Whispers that Aerith controls. And by fighting both the Black and White Whispers and blocking Sephiroth's mortal blow, it brings me back to the previous theory: Did Cloud create another timeline that more or less coincides with the main timeline? And is he living in both of them at the same time?
Idk if I'm making sense of this, just thinking out loud here. And hell, it's entirely possible that Cloud is just delusional and the mako degradation is making him see things. We'll see in a few years, I guess. LOL

Obviously there's also Mideel, which is the most important location in Part 3.
A really interesting change Rebirth gave us is that the Weapons actually have the huge materia this time, which will give all those missions far more impact.

10:44 Interesting theory but I got kind of a big counter argument to the "Aerith is Jenovah" thing............why? I don't mean 'why would Jenovah/Sephiorth want to mess with Cloud?' that's Sephi's bread and butter we're talking about here. But WHY just mess with Cloud?.......you may be thinking "Oh Cloud has S cells so it's really the only way to mess with the party".............Glenn Lodbrok anyone? If Seph/Jenovah wanted to they could mess with the ENTIRE PARTY and it would be more effective to do so then just mess with the one guy who everyone already thinks is losing his goddamn marbles. Sephi is orchestrating a WAR with this Jenovah ability and your telling me he COULDN'T do that to the party and ONLY had to mess with Cloud? I just don't buy it.
IMO Cloud created a new timeline which unfortunately, only he can perceive. "Oh why is it that he is seeing the what happened in the OG timeline in that flash at the end?"..........Cloud's brain has been drip fed the real timeline since Remake, but in Rebirth he doesn't get that. IMO it's the white materia. In rebirth the white materia is hollow, all the memories of the OG timeline are gone. At the end of the game Aerith has a full white materia again so Cloud ( who has touched thang ding), just like in remake is getting flashes of the original timeline......NOW this AU timeline stuff, I don't think Cloud realizes this is happening which will probably be the reason for is mental decline in part 3 still. BUT that's just my idea. Honestly Aerith acts too much like 'Aerith' to be Jenovah and I understand that's Jenovah's thing but even Glenn Lodbrok was acting sinister AF so I don't think Jenovah can be THAT convincing (Honestly her deception is probably more due to corruption then actual replication)

We see Aerith's heart start to glow gold as they're walking through the end game dungeon. Aerith tells Cloud something "This body is, probably, coming out of here with you, but my mind...will not be." We see Sephiroth do..."the thing" to Aerith. But, instead of a dead body, we just see a massive golden explosion. And, before we cut to credits, in the dub, we now hear Rachel MacFarlane in a familiar voice laugh madly from the middle of the golden mist and then say "Well, team, don't lisp my name anymore!" Aerith. Has. Become ERIS. And, yes, flat out, Billy and Mandy Eris at that.

Sephiroth has full control of jenovas powers. You never get a scene of sephiroth actually having a conversation with jenovoa at all or even what jenova thinks of sephiroth. I don't believe The ghost Aerith is jenova because she doesn't try to manipulate cloud or anything, she just says" I'll see you off and says goodbye" Also there's a scene where Aerith doesn't react to the smoke that blows out, but the wind blowing from the highwind does blow her hair and dress. Sephiroth doesn't need jenova to pretend to be aerith cause he already has power over cloud and we alaready know what clouds gonna do with the black materia.

I’ll give my two cents on the is she alive or dead debate: She is alive and dead. Sephiroth explains to Cloud about the convergence of worlds (or “reunion”) in a long cutscene before arriving to the Sanctuary. It’s pretty clear that Cloud blocks the blow from Sephiroth. The rainbow effect during his block indicates a change.
However, we are show two different timelines playing out, one where Aerith lives and one where she dies. Sephiroth even comments on the convergence beginning. It even appears to me that Tifa sees this for a moment and is confused by this as well, before shaking it off and succumbing to grief.
The main sticking point everyone talks about from the “saved Aerith alternate timeline” theory is that the “saved” Aerith is now in a new timeline. She’s not. She would have been if the convergence didn’t happen, but now we have an alive Aerith and a dead one in the same timeline (a single timeline that is a patchwork of two timelines). Cloud can see it. Sephy literally showed him the concept of multiple worlds/timelines (“I give you my blessing”).
The way I think about it is the “saved” Aerith isn’t in a new world or timeline, she is a “remainder” of that new world or timeline that was never allowed to blossom due to the convergence. Therefore, we have an alive Aerith and a dead Aerith in the same timeline that was patch worked together from two words or timelines. This could be why there’s a crack that only cloud sees. He sees a piece of the world where Aeirth survives (which would be a doomed world) merged with the world where she dies.
I hope this makes sense and doesn’t sound like word salad lmao. It’s probably thinking about it waaaay too deeply.

The emotional goodbye that no one in the party can hear would have to be a 4th wall break at that point, unless Cloud is farsight hallucinating her standing there.
And her changing her mind about going after Sephiroth makes at least a little bit of sense. She told a genetically enhanced super-soldier who can chop buildings in half to let her (a 90 pound flower girl) go it alone and it went about as well as expected. I think the Aerith Cloud is seeing at the end is either the Aerith that he saved and is from another timeline (certainly seems possible for cloud to traverse timelines in his sleep so Aerith must be able to as well) or it's the lifestream Aerith from the remake timeliness who just died. @@TerraEshbaugh-et7qm Its difficult to say anything with certainty about timelines because they haven't established rules for the most part. There seems to be a one-consciousness rule of some sort for "world travelers", and it seems Aerith has 2 or more available between the Lifestream and her living self(s). And the way these timelines are made seems pretty chaotic. The best I can figure is since the Lifestream is memories and the memories can be experienced non-linearly, that the memories can basically just mash together in whatever way it can make sense of it. Or Zack winded up where he is by powers of fan-service alone...
But I gotta stick with the most simple explanation for the ending. Sephiroth explains how timelines work and shows the rainbow effect, and 30 minutes later we see it happen. I suppose he could be lying, but in a meta sense, the crew needs a living Aerith somewhere because her prayer failed in the main timeline (White Materia was not glowing green). I also found it strange that Meteor was never directly said, yet Aerith revealed that knowledge to Cloud and he was not surprised after learning it. Almost like Sephiroth already had control over his mind. Not only that, but the fact that Aerith specifically said the Black Materia was a fake. I'm sure the dev team would not change a huge plot device like the temple being the black materia itself. I feel like Aerith stopped herself from revealing the truth since Cloud was indirectly feeding knowledge to Sephiroth. I wonder what will happen when we give him the fake black materia? To me Hojo is the dominant evil in Shinra and Jenova is the overall threat to the planet. I feel like in the flashback scene and even in the OG, Sephiroth's turn was really quick and almost seemed like it was forced and I feel like maybe once Sephiroth's mind broke Jenova's influence on him took hold and because he was under the impression she was his mother, that allowed Jenova to use Sephiroth and live out her plans as the one chosen by the planet since Gast believed she was an ancient and Sephiroth believes this too.

In Remake when Cloud first meets Aerith, Sephiroth appears in Cloud's mind saying "You're too weak to save anyone" a clear nod to Aerith's death. Sephiroth is trying to get Cloud in a mental state that would have him know that Aerith was killed. Why then would Jenova suddenly want Cloud to think everything is fine and dandy, and that Aerith is actually alive? It doesn't add up. These comments also seem to be a subtle 4th wall break. We the player have "clouded eyes" because we have prior knowledge of the OG story. We also want to save Aerith and have done for almost 30 years. That's why there were so many rumours and theories that she could be saved back in the day. So these lines appear to have double meaning, being directed at both Cloud, and us as the player.
As for the "hint" that Aerith would give Tifa, I think she does. Tifa clearly sees both Aerith dead and alive. We know the visual effect and noise which happens during that moment isn't exclusively used to show Cloud's mental state, as the same thing happens when Aerith gives Marlene some knowledge when they both hug at Seventh Heaven in Remake.
Then there is the rift/tear in the sky. Only Cloud can see that just like only he can see Aerith. In the date sequence, Aerith explicitly tells Cloud to not look at the sky. However, as we know, asking someone not to do something like that, is going to make them look. She wanted him to know about the sky. So we know that Aerith has some reasons for Cloud and only Cloud seeing things that the others can't.
Finally, there is no way that Aerith is actually dead. It would make the entire "Re-trilogy" pointless. The themes of defying/changing Destiny would be redundant, when the obvious implication to that is saving Aerith. Bringing back Zack would be redundant as his inclusion wouldn't change a thing. The different timelines would be redundant as they'd serve no ultimate purpose. The clear materia would be redundant as there wouldn't be any whispers to take her memories. The whispers would be redundant as if everything is ultimately going to end the same way, then they wouldn't have any reason to intervene in the first place. Aerith giving Red XIII and Marlene knowledge would be redundant, as those two having knowledge wouldn't mean anything if it didn't change the outcome. Why include any of that if they go down the path of "It was always inevitable"? They may as well have made a 1:1 remake and call it a day. Plus, it was confirmed in the Ultimania that Cloud actually did deflect Sephiroth's blade.
Besides, there is too much evidence that Aerith is going to live, and it seems like Aerith has prior knowledge of the events that happened in the OG. So her ultimate goal is to get to a point where she can finally live.
    1. The scene when Cloud first meets Aerith when she gives him the flower. That plays out entirely different to the OG. Aerith even says "Lovers used to give these when they were reunited" as she gives Cloud the flower. To me, that seems like it is a subtle nod to that first meeting actually being a reunion between Cloud and Aerith. However, Cloud is unaware of this, as are the audience as we see the story through Cloud's eyes for the most part. This would also explain the whispers being present as Aerith is changing "fate" by altering this moment.
    2. In Remake, Aerith already knew that Tifa was going to ask her to get Marlene to safety as soon as Tifa mentioned Seventh Heaven. Tifa never mentioned Marlene in this instance. However, In the original, Aerith only said she'd get Marlene to safety after Tifa told her Marlene was at Seventh Heaven. It's a subtle change, but points to Aerith knowing how things were going to play out.
    3. Aerith clearly gave some of her memories or knowledge to Marlene in the bar before the plate fell. We get a visual effect and a noise, suddenly Marlene stops crying, and looks at Aerith a little frightened of what she saw. Aerith then puts her finger to her lips to tell Marlene to keep it quiet and Marlene nods. This later pays off in Rebirth when Marlene tells Zack about Sephiroth wanting to kill Aerith, and how she has feelings for Cloud because Zack wasn't around. Granted this is in a different timeline, but the timelines only split at the end of remake when they "defy destiny". So Marlene would have this information in that timeline.
    4. Just after you save Aerith from the Shinra building and you're inside the room that Aerith grew up in. The whispers show up and Red XIII explains what they are. However, he said he got this knowledge from Aerith when she reached out to him. Aerith then warns of a bigger threat than Shinra. (Which I don't recall her doing this in the OG, but I could be wrong.)
    5. At the end of Remake, she mentions that they'll be changing themselves as well as fate if they succeed.
    6. In Rebirth, Aerith tells Cloud that he hasn't met her future self yet, but when he does, he is going to love her.
    7. Aerith is obviously doing some shenanigans with the white materia at the end of Rebirth, that would the need for prior knowledge of events. This is further enforced when the white whispers (Controlled by Aerith) try to prevent Cloud and the others from reaching the Alter. It seems like Aerith knew what was about to happen and wanted to stop Cloud from seeing, or tried to change events just enough so he could deflect the killing blow. Which as we know was confirmed to happen in the Ultimania.
    8. One piece of evidence that I see nobody talking about is the flowers blooming in Zack's "terrier" timeline. With Elmyra specifically asking Zack if the flowers blooming meant she (Aerith) would wake up. This also possibly points to the terrier timeline world not coming to an end, as why would the flowers bloom in a dead or doomed world?
    9. The lyrics to Hollow point towards Cloud reuniting with Aerith. The Lyrics to No Promises to Keep point towards Aerith reuniting with everyone, as the devs confirmed Aerith wrote the song about them.
    10. We clearly see that the "rainbow" effect indicates the creation of a new timeline. We see this when Zack makes his decisions in various timelines. We see this when Sephiroth sends Zack between timelines. Most importantly, we see this when Cloud deflects Sephiroth's attack on Aerith. Then we see these same rainbow colours as Cloud walks through the white whispers and tells Aerith to wake up. It's pretty clear that Aerith lives in some capacity. Be it in a different timeline or by some other shenanigans.
    11. Aerith herself comments on Cloud deflecting the strike when she says "I saw what you did back there, Cloud. Thank you." We know this isn't just in Cloud's head as Sephiroth himself comments on her presence. Saying that he underestimated her and tells her to "begone".
There is a lot more, but this comment is already getting pretty long. I think the reason people are pushing so hard for Aerith to stay dead is because they're purists stuck on the OG story. The OG story will always be there. It would be boring if they essentially made the exact same game with a few extra wrinkles. There is no reason why Aerith can't live in this version of the story, and the writers are clearly heading in that direction.

I'm not one to come up with theories, especially when it comes to the FF VII Remake games, because there really is no concrete evidence to go on. Everything is presented in a pretty open-ended fashion, and the theories I've heard mostly stem from fans desperately trying to tie together all the spin-offs in order to make sense of it all. It's fun hearing what people have to say, though. Your theory about Aerith being Jenova at the end makes sense when looking at how Cloud is acting, not to mention, of course, that he's the only one who can see her. But there's been no evidence to support that Jenova can impact the environment around other people. Case in point: why is Cloud the only one who can see the fractured sky at the end of the game? When Aerith is waving goodbye in the very last shot, it was such a profound little moment, and I honestly believe that if she isn't the genuine Aerith, in some form or another, then it makes for a pretty cynical move on Square's part. It wouldn't surprise me either way; the Jenova thing isn't completely unfounded, but I just have no concrete evidence to back up that claim.
I think the scene where Aerith dies in Rebirth was Sqaure's way of having their cake and eating it, too. FFVII fans, like fans of anything, are typically split down the middle. A lot of people, after Remake, were hoping Aerith might live this time around. Others, like myself, know how important her death is to the original game, and I felt it would have been a detriment to these characters if she miraculously survived. Having her kind of be saved by Cloud, while ultimately dying in front of her friends, was a way to appeal to both groups. While it leaves a lot of questions, what I really respect about this game is how it leaves me feeling emotional even when narratively, it's kind of a mess. And to be honest, half way through the game, I was so tired of anciticpating what was coming next (because of my knowledge of the OG), that I was thankful whenever something was changed.
Had they left Aerith's death largely in tact, the way it was presented originally, I don't think it would have left that much of an impact, because we've all seen that scene a million times. It's the video game equivelent of "No... I am your father." So I always suspected Square would so something different with it, and to me, it still resonates. The fact that we have most of the characters mourning her death (especially Tifa, which is heartbreaking), while Cloud is still able to communicate with her in some form, is really beautiful. And I'll admit, I was really confused the first time I saw this scene play out in Rebirth, but again, it's Square trying to please all the fans.
Anyway, I'm just looking forward to whatever it is the third game turns out to be, because for the most part, Sqaure knocked it out of the park with Rebirth, and I have a feeling it'll be staying with me for a while.

Here is one of my many theorys.
Sephiroth the Dreamer. Cloud the observer theory. Forgive any spelling mistakes or grammer mistakes i make my dyslexia is bad but bare with me.
Anything is possible in dreams ir should i say the impossible is possible in dreams.
Cloud when he sleeps at the ghost inn at gold sourcer he dreams and sees zack in the alternate world. Similarly he Dreams himself into another world when he talks to Barret, Barret states his eyes where moving rapidly he must have had a dream or even implying he was in rem state of dreaming and cloud states he went to another world. We know that sephiroth is a sleep at the northern crator and will be awakend when cloud gives the black materia. He will become a summon in a sense or be summoned by cloud. The black materia summons meteor and sephiroth is trying to become that meteor, to become the calamity. Sigmun freud states dreams are a window into the unconciouse mind revealing represed desires and unresolved conflicts. Aeirths dreams shows her repressed desires whereas clouds show his unresolved conflict. Biocentrism theory states that life in the universe is created by conciouseness. Cloud goes into his conciouse to fight sephiroth at the end of the og ff7 we all know this. And he sees sephiroth at the edge of creation in the same way at the end of ff7 remake. Sephiroth needs cloud to observe sephiroths version of reality in order for it to manifest into reality. Cloud being the observer. Sephiroth destroying the other worlds is only his dream of the universe and he is trying to bring that to reality in the awakend world through cloud. Similar to how summoning works with materia. Thats as far as i got with this theory at the moment. I have so many more its unbeleivable.

I think all versions of characters through all worlds are the same. Meaning there aren't multiple Clouds/Aeriths. In the doomed world when Cloud wakes up, he's confused and Aerith has to tell him it's a dream. Why would he be confused unless he's the same cloud from the main storyline? She pushed him through a portal back to his "world." So maybe the soul of one world inhabits the body of another 🤷

I don't think you are accurate in a little detail. They already know about the meteor since remake, when the whispers show them the meteor coming for gaia in space. After that you have the information dropped by the cetra talking about his history in the temple of the ancients, she mention the "destroyer of the worlds" and a scene cut of the VR shinra with meteor destroying everything is showed. They know about the meteor for more than one way, aerith knows, even yuffie says in the begin of forgotten capital "he is using the black materia, he can destroy the world", so this is a common sense in the party.

Here's the thing most people seem to overlook, and that is "the maiden who travels the planet." That book is about what happens to Aerith after she died. That book also talks about jenova influence or "negative lifestream" that is trying to stop holy, which is the red stuff that is blocking holy when fighting sepher sephiroth at the end of OG. The negative lifestream is what i always considered the whispers to be as they are represented in the book at a mist or smoke of black. The biggest hints have so far come from just this one book. Including when aerith tells the reader that she can send her consciousness back to another her like sephiroth or even make clones of her, but wouldn't want to taint the memory of her to the others. This is why remake is not the prime world. I DO believe there are always 2 Aeriths and 2 Sephiroths in each game, the prime which knows the future, and the remake verse world. I believe sephiroth that shows cloud the other universes, and the sephiroth we see most the game is two different sephiroths, as sephiroth should have noticed the white materia was gone when he killed Aerith in the church and not in the forest. I also believe that the use of sephiroth that shows the universes to the cloud is more or less good. Or at least in the sense that he wants cloud to actually live and wants to save the planet. Aerith even comments. it's not how sephiroth is supposed to be. I think when sephiroth says i give you my blessing, i think he means to save Aerith. It was his whispers that actually let him in to stop remake sephiroth from killing Aerith. The bottom line is that the book points out one important fact. Aerith and zack were the two that stopped jenova's negative lifestream from preventing holy and were only able to do it while dead. If Sephiroth truly knows the future, he would know the best way to succeed at his plans is to keep both zack and Aerith alive.

Aerith is def not Jenova. In the OG Aerith's spirit communicated with Cloud in a subtle way but in this game they made it more overt. I think that would be too much to introduce and close in the final game. Cloud's mind will break bc he has seen multiple timelines or world's.. which Sepiroth will use to manipulate him. I think some fans want a Kingdom heart's like story but thats too complicated. This story is a little more grounded.

I know I’m in the minority with this… but I think there’s one Aerith. I think she immediately returned to the lifestream and is protecting Cloud from literally killing himself if he knew the truth of what actually happened.
The Aerith that went on the date with Cloud and the Aerith smiling at him at the altar are just manifestations of… Aerith. She’s dead and in the lifestream now.
The only thing that puts a wrinkle in that theory is Sephiroth saying “so this is where you’ve been hiding…” Is he trying to kill her spirit? Or are there infinite Aerith’s that he’s trying to kill across all timelines? That is needlessly indulgent and I refuse to believe that.

As far as I'm concerned, the ending was what it should have been. I agree that we're about 95% consistent with the original. Knowing that the intent is to tie it all together and stay as true to the original as possible, it seems to me that all the extra mindplay is just that: mindplay. I don't think we're going to see a huge derivation from the original plot. The extras they've given us to tie into the EU are nice.
I'm fairly certain it's safe to say that Aerith is dead, just like before. Cloud is a broken man with a large amount of his persona shaped by the Lifestream. Perhaps his exposure to both Jenova and Lifestream is what gives him this ability to see the other worlds. That's a question that will remain unanswered until part 3.
