Final Fantasy VII Rebirth: Finding Fantasy
Hi All, Its been a while! While playing Final Fantasy VII Rebirth along with various other games over the past 2 years, I’ve begun to question how these seemingly endless and boundlessly expansive single player experiences can fit into my life - a life where adult responsibilities and shifting focus to online interaction have taken center stage. How could I even try to ask someone to play a game like this, how could I explain to someone why I play a game like this vs. something more communal or socially engaging.
This video is about the answers Rebirth has provided me to these questions. Are those answers affirming, life altering, or maligned by the game own flaws. Please Enjoy!

Cool that you enjoyed it and interesting. Ultimately I couldn't look past the changes they made to the OG, I felt betrayed and scammed into a kingdom hearts version of what is a much darker and beautiful story than what is betrayed in remake and rebirth.
What is that song at 22:59?!
One last date - My dream
That was a beautiful love letter to Rebirth. It gave me all the right feels and your use of music is spot on. liked, subscribed and a big thank you for this video.
Fantastic. Thank you.
The fact that I am constantly SHOOK when people say they weren’t even born when this came out isn’t a testament to me being old, even. It’s a testament to how shockingly YOUNG most of you are, honestly. I became a game designer in the industry because of this game and Chrono Trigger. I’m just glad people who genuinely aren’t even adults yet (or slightly are…you don’t even have the slightest clue until at least 27, and even then, we are are still naive idiots, and I come from a special forces military family background, even lol) but can still appreciate this series gives me hope in humanity, and my career.
0:50 Well, which ones did you play? There has been some pretty drastic changes, in intent and direction of the franchise.
Good video : ) Something ingenious about FF7 and Rebirth in particular, is all the daft crap that Cloud pretends to be ‘not interested’ is actually the point. Cloud pretends like the only thing he cares about is tracking down Sephiroth, but the truth is he ‘is interested’ in playing a children’s card game, racing chocobos, making cool friends and going on dates with Aerith. A player might be frustrated with the mini games and side quests. They might feel they get in the way of the story. They might try and race to the end. They might be just trying to find out if Aerith dies again. They might be like the SOLDIER Cloud who wants to take things seriously. But if you want to be more like the real Cloud, just try and have some fun.
Bravo. Well said 👏🏼
The combat simulator is my favorite part of the game for some reason. I finished around 120 hours, platinum at like 400 and am in the high 700s. I still go back to the story but the combat with all materias and max weapon level and Party level is so addictive and fun. Story was awesome. I happen to be against so many minigames, but in the end im satisfied with giving it a good score.
As a “boomer” who played the OG on day 1 and it being the reason I still play video games…rebirth is the perfect “remake”. I only blame zoomers for the underwhelming sales. Kidding, well kidding a little. However, no idea how this goat of a game sold less than shitfests, although fun, like helldivers 2. Not gonna hate, but this generation of gamers Love mindless bs and anything that will win their side of whatever culture war they are on. Great video and editing. Glad the algorithm brought me to this video. Only game that comes close to GOTY against rebirth is Astro Bot. Hopefully Rebirth gets it though. Truly a remarkable game.
Fantastic video! 💯 Rebirth is a masterpiece and one of the best experiences that I have ever had with a piece of fiction. This is a magical review of a magical game. ✨
Ngl i beat rebirth when it csme out, and just a week ago i started to randomly hum the Yuffie bored song😂😂😂😂
A well-written and edited video! However, I don't think Rebirth's low sales are due to "friction." I think the low sales are due to two problems - one obvious, the latter less so. The first is its PS5 exclusivity, which is the obvious one. The second however, is the lack of stakes. I discuss this at length in a 3-hour video I made critiquing Remake's ending (I posted it to my channel back in early February; a month before Remake came out, so some of it is a bit dated now). The gist of the video is that Remake's ending didn't leave players with anything to ROOT for, because Sephiroth's character and motivations are poorly explained, and the trilogy blew its load too soon by having a climactic, interdimensional boss rush at the end of Remake. When the first game in a trilogy ends with the heroes declaring that they need to stop the villain from destroying the whole planet, my immediate response should NOT be: "So what?" That's literally what I said to my TV upon beating Remake. MEANINGFUL CONFLICT is the soul of storytelling. Conflict is the crux of what makes anything in life interesting. And Remake's ending failed to make many players FEEL INVESTED in wherever the story is going - "Why does any of this "alternate worlds" nonsense even MATTER? Why should we CARE about where the story goes from here? HOW IS THIS A GOOD STORY?" THAT, I think, is the main reason why Rebirth is underperforming - both Remake and Rebirth (and the marketing for the latter) have failed to provide viewers with a good reason to remain emotionally invested in the story. It's hard to care about anything Sephiroth is doing beyond mere intellectual curiosity (which you can get by simply looking up Rebirth's plot synopsis on Wikipedia). I understand the words being said, but Sephiroth's goals and actions don't make me FEEL anything other than: "Oh. ... OK, then." When a substantial portion of the audience DOESN'T CARE about whatever your villain is doing, we've got a problem - there's no reason for them to pick up the next game to see where the story is headed.
Poor rebirth is not getting enough love, hope it wins game of the years and sells lights out on PC
Thank you for making this video. Your words in Part 4 resonated so deeply with me. This game begged the player to step into its fantasy and engage at a fundamental level, and it breaks my heart to feel like that's something we're losing in the video game medium. I remember looking at some meticulously designed plant pots in Under Junon and realizing how much love had been poured into each iota of this game's world. It was then and there that I realized I needed to slow things down and get lost in the wonder of it all.
I just think it's a sign to embrace weirdness and discomfort because they can help us grow and find joy - So glad you and got something out of this. Thanks so much for watching <3
"successfully captured the magic" - person not even born when ff7 came out.
What do you mean finding final fantasy?
I meant more like Finding the need for Fantasy when you may have lost it…. through Final Fantasy if that makes sense.
what a great video!!! the ending was on point
Thanks for watching :) and glad you enjoyed
magical video, thank you for that ❤🔥
❤️
Thanks for this. Loved every second of it!
❤️ thanks so much for watching
6:32 "And the manner in which she and Cloud develop a connection just feels like sheer magic." Every moment with Aerith does feel like magic. She brings out the best in Cloud.

@@CView I found this vid thanks to a FF content creator on X sharing it. A lot of people on there are giving you loved and support for your work. You expressed a lot of things in this video that really reflected a lot of our feelings about this game in such a meticulous way. Your sense of style and ear for which song to choose, love it!

I'm only 5 mins in and this is already the best overview I've ever seen in my 34 years. I put 340 hours into this game for that platinum. I generally don't play any other games but I make a special exception for this game. Games are ART
FFVII REBIRTH is my GOTY just like FFXVI was my GOTY 2023! Definitely highlights of this current generation! 🔥
You sir, are a poet. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us.
My favorite game of all time. Thank you for this, I started crying… just like in the actual game.
❤️ glad it was a special experience for you too - thank you for watching
I don't think I've seen a video on Rebirth that made me feel the joy and wonder I felt when playing the game as much as this video here. Thank you for putting this together, very well done!
best possible thing I could hear - thanks so much for watching :)
This is the best video I've seen about the game on this website. Incredible work!
Glad you enjoyed and got something out of it :) Thanks for giving it a chance
Tremendous video and superb editing. It’s funny because even though I’m a massive super fan of FF7, I remember feeling a bit caught off guard by how loose the driving elements of the narrative were early on. You’re essentially just following mindless zombies (which does happen in the OG). The early chapters feeling like they’re lacking real narrative thrust is, I think, from the aspect that the story is divided into 3 games. As one cohesive story, this is essentially the beginning of Act 2 and that section of a story is what some screenwriting books called “Fun and Games.” The stakes are set in the first act and now you’re off on an adventure that’s ultimately headed towards more dramatic places, but not just yet. It’s where you’re learning more about the characters and how they’re navigating the world. That’s great at the 1/3rd mark of a story, but when you’re just starting a new story, you often need more of a clear narrative thrust/inciting incident. While Rebirth **somewhat** lacks that, it’s because that’s what the first game was meant to do. But unless you start it right after beating Remake, it feels like momentum has been lost. But overall, really beautiful ode to the pacing of this game, which is purposefully slowed for all of the reasons you mentioned and because of where this game picks up in the greater flow of the 3-game experience.
<3 Thanks so much for the thoughtful comment and for giving this a chance. The part of this game that might turn people off is something that feels like it had to be.... Miss playing this game so much
I found your channel through your recent Rebirth video - which I thought was fantastic - so I was excited when I saw you also did a video about TLOU2. I had been thinking about doing a video about the game myself, and probably still will, and my mouth was agape as you touched on something I had drafted about TLOU2: the topic of game narratives vs film narratives. The thought struck me when ALSO thinking about TLOU2 and why it was structured the way it was and I came to essentially the exact same conclusion. As an example, it’s also why I think your analysis reveals why it’s so much easier for film and TV to pull off anti-hero stories: I don’t have to be a person who does monstrous things, but I can still be fascinated by them. No part of me wants to the Travis Bickle or the main character in Nightcrawler, but I can be incredibly tapped into their stories. I was a bit surprised that you ended up still not connecting with TLOU2 and Abby’s story after that realization, but I think that’s also an example of the subjectivity of all of this. While you said that the game wants you to look at events objectively - which is more or less true - I still think the response can be very subjective. I also remember feeling the EXACT same thing when perspective switched to Abby on my first playthrough. I thought, “Okay Naughty Dog, I see what you’re doing. You’re going to want to make me empathize with Abby. It’s not going to work. I see through your puppet strings. And good god, you even made the most convenient/contrived choice possible in making Abby the daughter of the one mandatory civilian death at the end of TLOU. You just had to make the stories link that directly rather than through an interesting and unexpected moment from Joel’s past. This isn’t going to work on me. It’s not.” And yet, it worked for me. I was begging Ellie to stop drowning her at the end. Obviously, it didn’t work for you and I respect it, but this was a fascinating experience as it really shows just how incredibly subjective art can be even when artistic intention is understood by the viewer. You understood why they did it the way they did and it didn’t work. I also understood and yet it worked. Either way, great video. Cheers!
Make the video - would love to watch it. Out of the 8 videos ive done, this is the one I feel like I left the most on the table with, but I stand by my general thought: This game would've been a better movie (where the characters can differ from your innate motivations to propel the story forward) than if it was a game (where you and the character(s) need to be semi-aligned to produce the forward thrust of the story).
Great review!
Glad you enjoyed <3
Thank you CView for sharing your view of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. While not a gamer myself I've watched all 130+ hours of streamers slow-play through the game it's interesting you mentioned the lack of financial success despite it's thoroughly mesmerising gameplay. Your final answer that people nowadays not having enough patience to appreciate the game of the decade, not only applies to video gaming but to life as well. Through your video I got the answer I was seeking, that I need to seek people not just with similar ideologies but with the same patience levels as well. Thank you CView for reminding me this crucial fact.
Glad you could get something out of the video <3 good luck finding what you are looking for out there!
@@CView Thank you CView
So I am one of those old ***** that actually played FF7 back in 1997, Alway's been my Fav game since I first played it. (Try out FF9 + Moguri Mod for another Square EPIC) I know some people have their problems with the Remake trilogy of FF7 franchise but personally what Rebirth did for this game Franchise has got to be celebrated, Its a masterpiece. Kudos to SE! Also enjoyed the vid so sub + like
I’m glad you enjoyed the original and remake/rebirth - been hearing way too many people saying they wish it was just a 1 to 1 remake.
@@CView You could probably make a 1 to 1 remake with modern graphics using AI, people just too lazy to do it, FF9 Moguri Mod being my evidence for that, They have totally enhanced this game to new levels the OG could never reach, The music alone was worth the money imo.
@@CView I would also say to those folks 1 question, How do you remake a 1 to 1 version of the overworld of FF7 og, without it being stupid ? FF7 OG was alot of instanced off areas and a massive overworld, so how do you make a AAA version of that ?
rebirth having poor sales is so disappointing and i hope it doesn't cause square to do anything drastic (BESIDES OF LAUNCH ON MULTIPLATFORM)
7:25 No... It had no military intentions. It had military *_applications_* but so does literally every single invention and discovery, from the knife and fire hundreds of thousands of years ago, to electricity dynamite and the internet. Should we NOT have invented those? Cuz the COULD be used as weapons? We wouldve died out as a species eons ago and IF we somehow managed not to, we would still be living in caves. Thats a dumb argument for two reasons, 1) No one ever claimed there werent military applications. 2) The fact that it can be weponized is not a valid argument to NOT invent it. A post it could ve folded to an envelope, filled with antrax and sent to the president. Do we need to ban Post-its?
"At least it brought attention to the masterful source material" Is, BAR NONE, the most charitable thing anyone could ever say. I dont even think it was a good thing. Netflix Bebop was SO bad I think people who actually wouidve watched the original otherwise skipped it. Netflix "Death Note", aka the worst thing that ever aired, is literally the ONLY cinematic project thats worse than Netflix Bebop.
Very well done vid! couldnt have said it better myself.
Ive only been able to watch others play it, because no ps5. But i've felt the excitement through others. I don't like its exclusive at the get go, it really screws ur sales and people like me who have seen it through others because they cant play it may not even buy it when it comes to pc cause they've already seen it. Kind of a weird strategy to me.
Great video mate. Well crafted. Rebirth is def one of a kind. @25:00 But I don’t think it’s about friction as much. Elden ring and baldurs gate have significant friction as such but sold extremely well. I think the main issue is that non-fans en masse just aren’t interested and haven’t been hooked onto this amazing game. Hope it wins GOTY and ends on a real high and draws new fans to the FF7 remake series in the long term, persisting thru gaming hisotry
Hold on you said you played five final fantasy games and didn’t get that same feeling you got with FF7 Remake. You must not have played FF8 because that’s the one that will change you.
Yah still plenty I haven’t played - I wish I wasn’t spoiled by modern designs
I appreciate that you were able to examine it with a critical lens while still being able to acknowledge that every shortcoming the game may have is a direct result of a very intentional design philosophy the developers had for the game, one that mirrors and extends that of the original game. Old RPGS were often slow, meandering, tonally confused at times, even bloated. But that was because they were giving you a full wide range, and hills and valleys, of a journey. Of an adventure. And that's the point of them, not a flaw. This was the first rpg in a long time to really be able to encapsulate that old feeling again.
Exactly, it’s all about appreciating the magic of everything Rebirth has to offer - not about treating everything as if it was designed in a vacuum. Thanks so much for watching <3
Great video broski, this vid just wants me to start my second playthrough of rebirth lol.
Hahaha as soon as I finished, I just wanted to play it all over again - such a good game! Thanks so much for watching <3
I feel like there's a misconception when it comes to the sales of Rebirth or even Final Fantasy 16. First of all, SquareEnix is notorious for setting unreasonably high sales expectations for most of their games and this includes both Rebirth and FF16 also Rebirth is still within the top ten best selling games of the year so far. Furthermore Final Fantasy 7 Remake came out just as the world was shutting down so more people had time to buy and play video games. I truly believe the video game industry is rebalancing itself back to normal sales and expectations. Since the world more or less back to normal, I feel like Rebirth's sales are fine considering everyone is back to work.
I’ve heard Rebirth is about 50% behind Remake’s sales. I think that’s more substantial than jut a covid adjustment.
@@CView I guess we won’t truly know until SquareEnix releases sales numbers. However, regardless of where it’s tracking, it doesn’t change the fact that sales expectations for games coming out now shouldn’t be based off sales from three/four years ago since the circumstances then allowed for more people to be playing more games.
I loved the original FF 7. The remake was pretty, but Nomura (who should never been trusted with anything outside character design) ruined it with his hooded figures and over reliance on Sephiroth. But then I had two weeks on my hands where I had to stay at home but didn’t have anything to do. So I got Rebirth, thinking I probably wouldn’t finish it. It was all I did, and could think about, for those two weeks. I haven’t mourned finishing a game like this since I finished FF X back when it came out. I heard someone say it feels like it’s something super fancy that only really rich people should have access to, like a private jet. It feels like that. It really made me feel I was experiencing something magical in a way I haven’t in over a decade.
It’s definitely a magical experience - As soon as I finished the video I wanted to play it over again
Still not convinced about the combat system. Too chaotic, no strategy enough and terrible ai.
I haven't played the original, but I thoroughly loved Remake. I played it two times, on PS4 and 5 + the bonus chapters. Rebirth though just never clicked for me. I'm at chapter 10 and just really wishing it would just end, and I've had it since launch because obviously I was really looking forward to it. I guess I'm just extremely tired of everything needing to be open world nowaday, the pacing of certain games - that would otherwise be excellent experiences - suffers terribly, and I think this game Is a prime example of that. Editing this because I forgot to say that I thoroughly enjoyed the video, even though I disagree with some stuff, your passion while talking about the game is truly wonderful and shines through.
Thanks for giving the video a chance <3 Rebirth is such a special game
2:27 mid 40s
As a mid-30s fan of the original I'm astounded how well you were able to encapsulate exactly the nuances that have us returning to this game. Really well done, instant sub.
Glad you enjoyed and could identity with the sentiment - thanks so much for watching <3
From one video essay-ist to another , this was just so beautiful . 11/10 work. I wasn’t a huge fan of rebirth for exactly the reasons you talked about with its seemingly meaningless meandering, but now I think I’m going to give it another play through with fresh eyes.
Definitely give it another shot! Would love to check out any of your rebirth video if you’ve got one
Have you tried FFX? That game will give you the magic you look for
I have but I definitely want to revisit - but each time I do I feel like it’s missing the spark of ff7 remake/rebirth
@@CView I think FFX is a game you have to prepare your mind to play, turn back time 20 years in your head to a time where things were more slow. Todays World is all go go go and FFX is a game you really have to slow yourself and your surroundings down to truly enjoy. If you play it i would suggest you make a lets play Series out of it with 1 hour episodes but record 4-5 episodes at a time so you spend a lot of time (in the slow mind zone) Talk to every npc to get to know the world and its people. I would love to watch and i know a lot of people will as well
