20 Differences Between Tisno, Croatia and California, USA! // Travel Vlog

- Here are some differences we noticed when we moved to Tisno, Dalmatia (Croatia) from California (United States).
The Gap Years - a travel experiment by Thomas Jones (California) and Belen Franco (Argentina), two 23-year-olds who want to see the world before 'real adult life' begins.
Hope you enjoyed our list! Which difference surprised you the most? Any ones we missed?
Also, please note that tipping in Croatia is optional, you do not need to leave tip at all. Specially not 10%-20% like in USA
As for "unattended children" - yes, that's true, but in Croatia, a lot of people are passively watching out for little children. If a child cries, many people will first look around for child's parents and if they don't see them coming, will talk to the child and try to help. Sense of community is not altogether lost here.
In Croatia, a neighbor "by duty" takes care of all small children on the street (even if he does not know them)
Television once filmed a "kidnapping" for a Tv show
the police were called, they were given permits, but to make everything “authentic” they did not inform the locals
Filming has begun
a car sped by, masked guys jumped out and started dragging one child into the car
all the male locals nearby jumped, a couple of them from a local construction site and caught the kidnappers and almost lynched them
only the quick reaction of the police security from the shooting prevented serious injuries to the "kidnappers"
I'm going to Croatia in August! Last minute decision but it was a YOLO thing... also this is by far my my favorite video on youtube ;) Thank you for all the great tips!
Yes go go go! It is truly amazing. Video about our time in Split coming out soon, so keep an eye out! thanks for the comment ;)
I loved your video. It was very dynamic and funny. Great work 🙂
Regarding, Apple Pay (I assume Google Pay too) people don't know about new technologies so if you ask them about it you will just confuse them. Workaround is to just tell that you want to pay with card and then use your phone to pay since both phone and card are contactless (if you have such card) and use sam technology. It works with every place that I tried that accept contactless cards.
Croatian Bakerys are the best
Lovely video, very accurate and specific! Sadly the unfinished house issue is very prevalent all over the country, not only abandoned, but people will live in unfinished houses without facades and it really does not look good.
Regarding going topless - it’s mainly the German or Scandinavian tourist not usually the Croatians or Dalmatians
True!!
Dalmatians are croatians!!!!
@@zeljkaduvnjak9087 She knows that, just playing her game ;)
And Czech women as well. We love them all. ;)
Thanks for the informative video, bloopers are cool.
If there’s one thing I enjoy in Croatia is being able to walk the streets without fear of crime. The USA inner cities suck regarding that and the rest of European cities are becoming the same. Love Croatia!
Thank you for pointing it out.
Croatia is the safest country in Europe according to Eurostat. The statistics of the European Statistical Office are based on the number of reported cases of crime and violence, ie vandalism in the neighborhood, conducted by Eurostat for 27 members, and for Switzerland, Norway and Iceland.
Croatia boasts the safest neighborhood, safer even than Iceland, with 2.7% of reported offenses.
So we can let our children play freely outdoors day and night. Usually the community takes care of them and in reality they are never unattended.
Yes. It was very relaxing, especially when compared to Los Angeles
Apple Pay, Google Pay etc you can use it in larger cities in Croatia also credit cards are widely accepted in larger towns/cities almost everywhere. But in small towns/villages you probably won't be so lucky, unless its a top tourist destination like Rovinj, Hvar etc.
good to know ! we've been staying more in small towns but plan to visit the cities soon :)
all major grocery retail chains (Konzum, Prehrana, Kaufland, Lidl, Spar/Interspar) receive MasterCard and Visa
even in small villages
I grew up in Dalmatia. I would spend entire days outside playing with other kids, doing crazy and stupid stuff. My parents were never concerned. Every adult had in him power to discipline (spank) any kid that deserved it. Then when that kid returned home he would get another "helping" from his parents. In our case, the entire village raised all the kids. We were one community...looking out for each other.
I feel like that must instill such a strong bond with your community!! crazy how different things can be.
Very beautiful country
Hi guys.. really enjoyed the video. I visited Dubrovnik a couple years ago and it was gorgeous. It was hot as bageezus out. Keep up the good work.
We will visit Dubrovnik in August so I'm sure we too will experience that heat! Thanks for the comment!
Amazing content! You guys are so funny, that nude part made me laugh so much
I hope you had a wonderful time. Greetings from the capital of beautiful Croatia, Zagreb.
We did! we would love to visit Zagreb someday
@@ThomasWilsonJones Thank you for your reply
@@dorsop7184 yes, the christmas markets look beautiful! We are very festive people, so the holidays there sound amazing...
There are always grannies on the lookout, taking care of kids in my neck of the woods in Croatia. Surveillance grannies. heh
Really nice video, found you guys on reddit
Thank you! glad you enjoyed :)
very cool videos. you explain in very detail and fun. i really enjoy watching your video. thanks for sharing. New sub and friend here
Apple/Samsung pay is not really true. You can pay with that in any store that have POS ( device where you tap your physical card and put pin )
Just say paying with card and move your phone closer to POS and voila. Every single one of them accept Samsun/Apple pay.
If you ask cashier about paying with S/A pay they would probably be clueless what’s that.
IT helpful with the tech advice as always! thank you!
@@ThomasWilsonJones
15 years earlier(2006) there was an option to pay by sms, by mobile phone
the child came to the store to buy goods,
at the checkout just said the parent's cell phone number
the parent at home popped up a request for payment with the amount and name of the merchant
he just typed in the PIN
Those cats are just using the tourists 🤣
Everyone's looking for their 15 mins!
Really loved your video, but when you were talking about the water.. hmmmh nooou. Water is for drinking, cooking and washing :D The sea is for swimming so correctly would be seawater or just sea (ie ocean is also wrong) :D
PS. Did you know there are no private beaches in Croatia.. Its a common good, you just cant own that peace of land :)
you are so right! We kept having to correct ourselves and call it a sea, NOT an ocean. lol. tricky when I've been next to the Pacific my whole life!
That's how life should be! The American dream moved to Croatia!
Good job
We live in Tisno and the US as well! Nice video. But I have been paying with Apple Pay and Fitbit Pay for several years now in Tisno. All stores have it here. Apple Pay works wherever you can wave your card.☺️
nice couple

I wonder how LEGO ended up on the list. Haha
Also, someone already stepped on a sea urchin, so... it's arguably more dangerous when you forget your shoes.
Just the essentials
It is always interesting to see how foreigners experience us. That said, many of these observations cannot be universally applied. The cars should stop when you try to cross the street at the pedestrian crossing. And public nudity... it works in many places, but be careful with this, it is not universal.
Thank you for the feedback! It was a joy to experience Tisno
@@ThomasWilsonJones Thank you for your kind and interesting video.
Actually.. I work with tourists.. In our shop people pay using different methods.. Google or Apple pay are everyday occurrence.. Yet numerous Americans still don't have contactless cards and they still have signature verification. 🤷♀️
touché!
@@ThomasWilsonJones 😁 If you happen to visit Split.. Come and check out the shop! You have a point though.. See.. Supermarkets are not the problem. Restaurants and bars.. Very few accept card payments, especially in very small places. The wise thing to do.. Ask before you get seated!
I would say pretty accurate

That is reality. Would have over a million views but can understand why they didn’t go that route.

Tisno is better
You are not wrong
Beautiful video 💕💕💕
