When you travel from inner part of Croatia to the Adriatic coast, you will literally pass through 3 different climates. That's why temperature is very important, weather can change very fast
and there are many older wehicle on the road. but this what you said, from one part of sv. rok to the other there can be 20 °C difference
Just passed from Zagreb to Rijeka one week ago, it went from rainy to sunny to snowy to foggy in a 100km radius, so yeah the weather forecast is important for us there :D

Traffic lights in all European countries same. Also traffic rules. In Europe no free turn right. PS if there is no sign.
In Germany you can turn right
We have green arrow to turn left or right on red light if safe while in america you can turn right on red if safe unless there is a sign that is not allowed
I think in Netherlands and Italy I saw it go directly from red to green.
There are subtle differences, eg I've read that the diamond sign in France gives you priority until there is another crossed out diamond. Here in my country each new intersection "resets" priority, and most of the times esp. on rural roads the diamonds are left out, because you can infer from the other roads having yield or stop signs that you are on the priority road.
@@goranduric7214 Not when the light is red or there's no green arrow
Interesting video, but on point 60 even on the pictures you used in the video you can see that we have a traffic light on top and one on the right on the pole. If you are the first car you look at the side light.
Yeah... also, I never had problem seeing the light even if I’m the first one... if you stop before the line, there shouldn’t be a problem seeing the light turn green. It would drive me insane watching on the opposite side of crossroad to see my light because cars are driving through, I don’t need to look at them 😂😂😂

Just note: lots of things you mentioned differs in different part of Croatia
Regarding for stop lights being on the the same side, people who are first in line can't see them (those are for people who are behind), that's why there are also stop lights on the right which can be seen in photos you've put
And on realy big crossroads we have stop lights on the same side, just on the right and also on the oposite side. So, it is not so strange.
Even a word "dozen" means 12 in USA.
The fact that you guys don't have a single unit of measurement ending with 0 annoys me greatly.
In Croatia they do sell 6 eggs in a pack, which makes it half dozen :D

Just for ease of use "Rakija" is pronounced like "ra-ke-ya" :-) And in general, when you see a "J" in any Croatian word it's pronounced as "Y" in English. And "C" is always a "C" :-D Never a "K" :-D One common mistake with that is when people from English speaking areas try to pronounce name of that inventor / entrepreneur Mate Rimac who makes those electric super cars; They often say his last name as "Rima-K"
Thanks for letting me know!

The reason why there are temperature signs all over is that we had several instances of sudden ice on the road with severe accidents as a consequence, so the temperature indicators are basically to warn you of sudden black ice on the highway, especially on the overpasses.
12:39 - Those are road information boards/signs. They just display time and temperature as a placeholder, but they change to vital safety information when there is a need for it.
Can't remember seeing a more interesting cultural video, awesome job dude! Greetings from Zagreb!
60 - there are stop lights right across the road so that the first car can see it as well, you probably didn't notice them
REGARDING THE LIGHTS IN INTERSECTION: There is a really good reason for lights being on the same side in intersection: This way you control that people don't go into intersection!!! Honestly, I would probably just be stuck in the middle of intersection if I was driving in America (not knowing you have it differently :'D). It is because the lights work same as any sign > if for example you have a sign saying "speed limit 80", this speed limit is valid from that sign on. it's same with the lights, if it's green, it means you are free to go from the lights on/ if it's red it means you cannot go on from the sign/ light. This controls that people don't go into intersection. Regarding not seeing it > there is the white line where you are suppose to stop, if you stop there you will be able to see the light just fine, BUT just in case, they put the lights also on the right side, and even one set of lights on the other side far away, so you really cannot miss it. :)
Also, regarding the temperature sign being often on the roads, it's because in Croatia the conditions on the road can change REALLY FAST (for example, you can be driving in the sun and after passing a tunnel there is a wind and fog). If the temperature suddenly drops there could be ice, or it could be slippery, so it's really all because of safety. They keep you informed so you can adapt your driving in time. Conditions can change in a matter of just a few kilometers.
Also, Tristan's first picture proves that the car in it was way ahead where it should be. Other this is, that in Croatia "most" of intersections (because of only two lanes) are way smaller, thus when buses or trucks from left or right side of intersection want to drive into the lane left of you, they need more space to make an easier turn
Haha, and that is exactly how it was for me when I moved to Houston. I really had to concentrate on driving hard and still ended up in middle of the intersection on few occasions . But with the time, I got used driving here and even passing on red light when making right turn. I must say I like this way better here. It just makes sense
After years of driving in both Croatia and the US, the US intersections make way more sense to me. As the guy said, if you accidentally go a bit too forward, you are hopeless, and there is a risk of inducing a crash. Actually, happened to me in Croatia. Never happened in the US. Also, not allowing to always turn right on red in Croatia makes intersections slower.
I moved from Croatia to London. I've lived there for 6 years, then I moved to LA and have been here 4 years now.
I ran the red light a couple of times because the traffic light is somewhere in the distance and not where you're supposed to stop. I find traffic in the US is a mess and lacks many rules.
For example, you can merge lanes from both left and right! So in case of an accident, no one is to blame lol
There's these weird middle lanes where cars from both directions are allowed to go into! They're marked with a double yellow line, but it's ok to just drive into it and hope no cars from the opposite lane had the same idea...
You can turn right on red. Which is why I was almost ran over many times! Pedestrians have to jump away from the car because people automatically assume they can turn right even if there's a pedestrian crossing there. It's a mess.
There are no rules for who has the right to enter a crossroad. Everyone has to stop and whoever stops first goes first lol. So you have to memorize it like a Simon Says game. And if you stop at the same time as someone, it's an awkward moment of trying to see who will go first.
And omg! Stop signs everywhere! Because there are so few rules, they have to put a stop sign literally everywhere. Probably to improve the sales of car brakes.
I love to drive, but it's really not fun to drive in the US.
Glad to see someone give their honest opinion. Keep it up!
Beautifull comparison of two countries and cultures.
So awesome to see ur excitment on the topic and thank you on your effort !

YES!!
Many of these differences are differences between the US and Europe.
I totally agree with the crazy location of the traffic lights. Even Pelican Crossings (where pedestrians press a button to turn the lights red before crossing) often have the pole of the traffic light nearly even with the front bumper of the nearest car. It's as if drivers are expected to be clairvoyant.
Traffic lights order - The same order has always been the case in Britain: Red, red/amber, green. Adding the amber light to the red gives drivers a second or two to put their vehicles in gear before the lights turn green, something that is not necessary in vehicles with automatic transmissions.
J, in Croatian is what we Brits call the 'continental J', which is pronounced as a 'Y'. Hence Rakija is pronounced Ra-ki-ya.
Great video! And they are strict about taxes unless you're a politician :P

*STREET LIGHTS EXPLAINED:* There's always another light on the right side (on the pole) which is made for the first row cars to look at. They're even on your pictures. Therefore, you don't need to look through your sunroof, though it would be a wildly funny sight to see.

Sometimes we use "dozen" its just not that popular and its kinda old. About 10-20 years ago eggs were actually sold in dozens
That was really good. Thanks from Oz.
really informative, thank you!
12:14 You have an additional light on the right, as you can see here. So, if you are the first in line, you don't look upwards but to the right hand side. You will always be able to see this light very easily and without having to strain your neck. By the way, this is the standard principle in Europe concerning traffic lights.
Yes, I found the traffic light situation frustrating too! 😂😂
Why? In 1 traffic lane, you have traffic light on the right, with 2 traffic lanes You have traffic light on the right and above, on 3 traffic lanes You have traffic light on the right, above and over the intersection on the left. In the worst case, you can always check the pedestrian traffic light on your left.
At some intersections we have them both before and after the intersection so you can look wherever you like. And it makes more sense to have it before the intersection so you see it and stop sooner.
Traffic lights are terrible, they're stingy when it comes to the number of lights at an intersection. Often there is just one set which is usually on the near side.
Congratulations. You prepared well. Traffic lights would need a correction. When you are first in the row you look the light on the right side. Apart from this, really well done!
Your problem with trafic lights has a reason. It is like that so you stop earlier or on time. You can always look at pedestrian trafic light or at one in other lane. If there is no more than one traffic light you can look at pedestrian light that is faced just like traffic light above you just on the otger side of the road.
The poop thing is to see if you got harmful gut bacteria so when you handle food/drinks for other people you don't transmit it further.
@disn_44 Hardly, in Croatia we have free health insurance, we all have regular check-ups with a doctor (that is the reason why we do not have frequent occurrences of dangerous bacteria or similar) ... whether you are a student, student or work somewhere ...
@disn_44 Testing biannually is better than not at all. Just because it won't solve the problem completely, doesn't mean it's not worth doing. Perfect being the enemy of the good and all that.

Further on, there are many types of haicuts also. Darker clothing for men? Men in Croatia wear all kind of colors nowdays. Whoever did you speak to either does not live in Croatia, or was telling you his personal style.

Read carefully in Croatia We have very strict safety standards. I read the law a bout health and safety on work. But problem is in general that no one gives a fuck a bout that most of the time. Common thing that Westerners (except Italy) see is that in Croatia is normal that several generations live in the same household, either the family house or the apartment. It is not unusual that grandparents and grandchildren live in the same household.
If married, daughters usually move to husband's home with his parents. If for some eason they live in separate home, married children usually rent the apartment close to their parent homes, or if possible buy it. That way the assistance of (grand)parents is available 24/7.
In littoral and mountain part of Croatia, especially towards the south, it is normal to eat a lot of bread.
Thank you!
It's true, I would add that Croats (unlike Germans and others) have a huge number of private property (official data: over 90% ppl have own house or flat), we do not rent a house, we buy it like for life time.
@@nijamkaj exactly. Croats always have that fear that if they do not own the home, that they always could be kicked out (and in worst possible moment), or that they could be ripped off with the ever raising rent. When You are the owner, Your home is Your stronghold, sanctuary and place of safe retreat, and is kind of part of Your body, You build yourself in your home and vice versa.

about that traffic lights...there are lights on the right or the left side if you cant see the ones in front. Good work, pozdrav iz Hrvatske Tristan!
The benefit for #60 is that it enforces stopping earlier. Roads are tight, people like to barge on to the crosswalk, so you gotta stop way earlier. On the driving test, you fail if you touch that line.
The simplest explanation why stop lights are where they are is because you're supposed to stop at the light. When traffic lights are on opposite sides of the intersection it is much less clear which traffic light is for whom. For example, if traffic lights were on the opposite side someone turning left could see a green light before they turn, but as they turn there is a big red light in front of them. Whereas when the traffic light is on their side of the intersection, once they pass their traffic light, there are no more lights to distract them.

Great video. One point from my side, point 13 is incorrect. I mean, it used to be that way for some time and the cars were limited to around 80 kW of power for people under the age of 24. This restriction was later removed as it was deemed unconstitutional.
Thanks for letting me know!
@@TristanKuhn Fun fact: One of the reasons why they have removed it is because most of the police cars were Skoda Octavias and young police officers were unable to drive them due to the engine being over the power limit.

I am from Croatia and I have to say very intersting video. Let me explain some of the Croatia stuff you've mentioned:
61: This was introduced relatively late, in mid-2000's. In that period, freeways were heavily modernized and lots of new kilometers were built, for instance Karlovac-Split, Zagreb-Varaždin, Karlovac-Rijeka etc. Before that, there were no digital road signs in Croatia at all.
88: This is because major North-South road corridor that connects two largest towns in the country mostly run through mountanious county named Lika. Freeway was fully completed in 2005. There is also alternative way to reach Dalmatia from Karlovac to Split, by two-lane highway that mostly run over the hills, so there are not many tunnels, but you need to drive much more slowly. This road served as the mayor connection between Zagreb and Split before A1 freeways was built.
its gemischt..german word for mixed (mixed vine and mineral water) and Rakiya..but not cirylic alphabet..latin🤣
Number 60: you can see The Light Because you have another Light on The side of The road designed specificly for that
At every intersection there is a line where you have to stop the car and then you see a traffic light above the road, in addition there are also traffic lights on the side of the road which can also be seen in your photos
Tnx fore this. Frome croatia
Croatia has a lot of gorgeous sand beaches too btw!
@roko fašen ewww omg where is that?! 😭
@roko fašen oh no that's disgusting, people are terrible, I hope that changes for the better in the future 😢
@roko fašen yeah tourism ruins a lot of beautiful places 😢
The benefit of having a traffic light before the intersection is that if the weather conditions are bad, say foggy, you will certainly stop before the intersection because you see where the red light is. If it were behind the intersection you might not be sure how far from it you're supposed to stop, and you might end up stopping in the middle of the intersection.
The downside is what you said, but that can easily be remedied by stopping 2 meters away from the pole if you're the first car.
And the can also look to the traffic light on the right side as that will show the same.
Good point. Guess that’s one benefit of it
@@vlaja29 or you can wait until someone behind you sit on their honk :-D
Okay, I had to laugh when you talked about traffic lights. Actually when you first mentioned traffic lights in the beginning, I thought to myself I’m surprised that you didn’t talk about where they are positioned. But then you said it at number 60.
When I first came to US, that took some time to get used to, I tell you! In fact, one time my friend was driving in Chicago and stopped at the red light, when we realized he stopped directly under the light, like back home in Croatia, which means in the middle of the intersection!!
Luckily it was late at night and there were no other cars there at that moment. 😂😂
These are some home diffrences:
Window opening concept
Door handels not door knoobs (rarely u see a door knoob)
Houses made out of bricks and concrete
Closet is not a room its a cabinet ( in some modern houses there might be a room for a closet)
If u live in a building it wont be apartment 145 (any number) it would be your last name
( I'm Croatian btw)
here are some clarifications about some of your points:
43. and 44. - putting corn, mayo and ketchup on pizza is mostly common in fast food places, not in real pizzerias
48. paying toll at the exit - that's the way in Croatia because highways here have multiple exits with price you have to pay different according to length of the highway you travelled
59. turning right at the red light - you can turn right if crossroad has special lane for turning right but you have to let all cars coming through the green light pass before you turn right
61. signs on highway that show temperature - that are information panels that warn you if there is work on the highway ahead or similar, and when there is nothing else to inform you about they show temperature
73. POS machine connected to the tax office - before that was implemented there was a lot of tax fraud at the point of sale, owners not declaring a whole amount they earned
79. state colleges are free for those that get in the quota every college sets for that particular year, all that want to go to the college outside that quota must pay
80. primary healthcare is , on the face of it, free, but every working Croatian has to pay for healthcare and retirement fund whether he uses it or not. atop of that for many medications you have to pay participation in the price, and also you have to pay for additional layer of healthcare, otherwise you have to pay participation in primary healthcare and prices for medications are higher
85. asking what type of card are you paying with - that's because there are fees if you pay with card of one issuer on the POS of other issuer, that's why you will see many POS of different issuers in shops. and if there is only one POS machine they have to set in the register who is the issuer of the card you are paying with
86. two receipts - it depends how modern is their POS machine, newer print out receipts on one piece of paper
Says something is completely idiotic.
Me: O rly?
He explains what it is.
Me: Oh, yeah, fully agreed.
Am from Croatia, love this vid lol
Regarding the traffic light ... you have a traffic light on the right side so you don't have to tear your neck to see it. You also have a pedestrian signal on the left and right when it is red for them, it is green for you :)
Cool video! Croatian here...
The funny thing about the traffic lights being infront of the car is that it is like that in Europe. Maybe it has something to do with saving space... dunno. Btw., when I was driving in Mexico I almost stopped my car at the red light at the middle of the crossroad, because my traffic light is "over there", on the other side of the road! Wtf :D That was messed up, so weird :D Like, why is the traffic light THERE, when I am HERE, it`s MY traffic light LOL.

Guys here are much more interested in being perceived as a macho/manly person than as just a male person, but also some women tend to be overly feminine (too much make up, dressing up over the top...). It is more a thing of a low self-esteem and hiding it, then of showing who you are and what you like ;)
Rakija (ra-ki-ya) is a medicine, that is true :D
About temperature being shown at the road - Croatia has two climates, continental and mediteranean. If you for example, drive from Zagreb to any city in Dalmatia, that means you need to go through Lika and Gorski kotar. In Zagreb there could be 20 degrees Celsius, in Lika and Gorski kotar there could be snow and in Dalmacija there could be 25 degrees Celsius, sunny and hot. Temperature is a good thing to know if you have sandals on your feet and you step out in Lika at a gas station on a rainy cold day :D :D
Also, if the tax rate is 25% and something costs $100, tax included, the government gets $20, not $25. The item pretax is $80, and the government gets 25% of $80, or $20.
MathWhAt?
@@paulpetersen6539 Cost of item is 80 kuna, (mostly used) tax rate is 25 % x 80 kunas so that is 20 kuna, final price to the customer is 80+20=100 kunas.
That tax is called VAT (Value Added Tax) and is common in EU and elsewhere. Also there are rates of 0% (for baby food as example) and 13 % (books and some other stuff).
If you want add tax to price multiple with 1.25
if you want to deduct tax, then you divide by 1.25
if something costs $ 100 + tax = $ 125
or vice versa $ 100 - tax = $ 80
currently in Croatia the sales tax is 25% and is included in the price you see on the price lists
Good video...do number 2
Here in Croatia it is true that our traffic lights have Yellow in between, however not every traffic light does that singaling before trnasitioning to yellow. Some do blink, some have numbers on top of the whole thing, and some have numbers on each light as countwodn, depends on the city/County though because in Zagreb I don't recall seeing any non casual traffic light, while in Samobor for example I saw lots of those with numbers !!
Its 20 beers not 24 coz its 0.5l bottle and not 0.33 😂0.33 is like eye drops for us... Only girls are drinking 0.33

Thank you very much for representing Croatia and that it is nice here and that we have both disadvantages and advantages, but everyone has them, right? Thank you very much for your kind words and I hope you will visit us again. Bye
Small talk is super common really. Especially amongst neighbors.
Coming from the most croatian person ever, some of these things were complitley false. BUT parts of croatia you come from also determines things, cultures in different parts are extremely different sometimes🤷🏻♀️

Gotta say, many things are simply false, and others misconstrued.
A 100 diff's is waaaay to manny info for one video.
@@mikijovanovic525 So what? He did a follow-up video with even more facts.
Small talk and waving are actually common but in smaller places like villages and small towns.
regarding traffic lights position like this, is to make people stop way before (aprox. 2-3 m) away from stop line.
