I really like this! You've actually inspired me to make one of my own and see how it goes. I've just ordered a small plaque from evilbay. Wish me luck, and keep up the great vids 🤘
Same here haha. I'm already planning a rocky desert one for my Intercessors Kill Team. Also waiting to get a piece of XPS to work with. I'll get it next Monday if everything go well 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
This looks great, I went through a phase a few years back in the pre-COVID days when I was playing d&d at the store a lot where I would make these little boxes to carry my character, dice, pens, and mini in, and the mini area was always done up like a little diorama with a magnetized spot for the mini to snap into. This reminded me of that and now I want to make some display boards for my Stargrave and Frostgrave parties haha.
My advice for the base cutting round shizzle is either use cardboard (that type that's thick like on the back of sketchpads) and do a couple of layers to get to the base level then pop some holes in it with a hole punch set (you can get 32mm hole punches that are perfect for it) glue that down first then do the sculpting on top, you can even put a bit of card tubed up in the recesses to ensure you don't go over the limit. I made a base for my bloodbowl team and had to do the ol' carving out process and I recon the other way has got to be easier. I love how your stand looks, despite the nad ache that is cutting round bases you still made it look great, and it gives the minis so much more presence. Amazing job dude!
Dave, this is cool. I've been toying with the idea of doing something similar with the bookcases I use to display my models. Thought it would be cool to make scenic display shelves for each faction that matched their basing scheme! Think it would be way more awesome than just plain white shelves. Think I've just added another video idea to my backlog....
I use model train foam....they come in thin or thick sheets super easy to cut out nice circles then simply add basing material over it I've made one for each of my Kill Teams
I got an idea from somewhere to use picture frames to display my Blood Bowl teams. It wasn't my idea originally but I have got some good results. Build up the middle with card, and then carry on just like this video. The MDF plinths are probably a lot cheaper though which could be an advantage.
At the beggening I was not sure if I would do something like this....but the more I see it, the more I wanted to try as this could be an awesome way to display my Conan minis.
Would magnets in the plinth and model bases be enough to keep them in place for 'reasonable' travel - certainly would work for transport around the gaming area. Also, would there have been enough working time to just place empty bases in the various spots, to keep basing debris out, then just pop them out once done with placement?
I have neodynium magnets holding my blood bowl guys to a base that is basically the same as this and they hold great. you could possibly get the bases in and then remove them but it's always gonna risk the bases getting stuck or knocking the material if removed to early, My advice for the holes is a hole punch set, you can get them with 32 mm hole punches and then you can just layer up some cardboard cut the holes and glue it to the plynth. I'd recommend putting something like tubed up cardboard in the holes once you're doing the basing portion of the plynth so that you keep them nice and tidy. I built my base the hard way and the method I've worked out seems a much easier approach. Hope that helps, and happy hobbying bro.
I love the idea of creating a storage/transport diorama for a kill team - I suppose the next step would be some sort of magnetisation for the bases and a transparent lid of some sort? Either way, this looks awesome!
Love this idea. I want to find a plinth like this that has a clear top so then I'd finally have a decent way to keep dust off of the important stuff. If I did this for all six of my teams I'd probably make some 10mm tall thick paper circles at 25mm, 32mm, ect, and use those for the base insets. Once dry, the paper insets could be ripped off if needed, leaving, at worst, a fuzzy but perfectly circle inset. Worth a try! Thanks for all you do Dave.
Get yourself some 1/12, 1/18 or 1/24 scale display cases meant for model cars with the clear top, depending on how big you want the display to be, just be mindful of the final height of your piece. Should look great, and you can even add a backdrop inside the clear acrylic if you want.
Fantastic ! this was always on my list of things to do for the display cabinet, different races/units on a lovely diorama thats modular. nice work brother
Enjoyed the vid! Feel like maybe could've been something about the kill team you were working for and the choices you made on terrain etc! Otherwise still a fun one :)
I've done something similar with my blood bowl teams, but used the really thick cardboard "Graphix medium chipboard" and a circle cutting compass to cut out the base hole. This inside of an acrylic display box off of Amazon means I don't have to dust anything.
Great video! My friend recommended your channel and you do not disappoint! Can you post a link to those unit plinths please? I want some for my competition entries, they're so hard to find! Thanks in advance.
I had that dream about Safety Frog again, except this time he looked a lot like Gandalf. I can't take it any more; I'm getting the rowboat and I'm gonna look for him myself.
Lovely idea fella. Definitely going to try this, where did you get the stl for the sign btw? Not sure if you mentioned it or I missed it in the video. Cheers for the brilliant video.
Aww that 10.15 moment. Added washes, it ruined my previous work. It was heartbreaking. The display turned out great though, I absolutely love it and the idea. Im going to be making some of these! Thanks for the great video.
I used to find your videos truly inspiring but now I'm not sure if you're an overachieving genius, or I'm seriously under performing in my hobby progression! I kinda thought a hobbyist with a real world illness could be relied upon to make me look good....turns out he's more able bodied than anyone! ;)
Also I recommend trying oils for shades and washes… clear coat and seal the model with a varnish then plaster the oil every where and wipe down with cotton balls and sponges with a slight amount of mineral spirts
It pulls all excess oil paint off leaving all the paints you painted underneath the clearcoat still there while leaving the rest of the oil in the recesses that you didn’t get to
Sound advice! I prefer enamels instead of oils now. Oils were hard to paint over for obvious reasons but the enamels hood acrylic over the top. Works a treat!
Great idea for giving my guys-on-the-shelf some context. You might want to clean your sensor though, there's some serious dust spots on your panning scenes
One thing that gets me asking Q's is Dave why not add rocks and debris to the Sculpta-mold just before it hardens, that way saving time when it goes like concrete? Otherwise nice little plinth.
I'm not entirely sure! I've just used it on a board build, dispensing it with a ketchup bottle and i kept pouring it out, adding water, shaking and testing. 1/5 might be a good ratio to start at with the pva, assuming you soaked it through enough, you'll be fine. Iso and water you can go 1:1 no dramas i think.
Quick question from just a newbie getting into this hobby, more or less how's the ratio with the alcohol + water solution to break the surface? My first attempted for a terrain I applied the PVA + water directly and the result was ok so I think I can improve my next piece =). Thanks, I'm enjoying A LOT your videos. CheerS!
I really liked the music in the first few mins of the video. It gives me vibes of the film Willow ua-cam.com/video/G6i-7eQ3684/v-deo.html (feels like a medieval version of Paul Simon ). I don't know if that was intentional but as a fellow music creator I really appreciate the time, effort and overall high level and progression of all of your videos. 5/5 great stuff
That might be where the inspiration came from! The stuff i used is from Shadow Hearts for the most part i think. Always like to keep my fellow music crew happy with my choices haha

Awesome results, it's so cool to see minis in an authentic environment!
Can’t wait to try a Catachan or Seraphon one! Jungle time!
Fantastic. Sounds like a fun way to display your minis.
Dialogue audio track seems much cleaner than the videos before 🙂 Love the Lavalier-Beard-Attachment
Thank you, gave the rode pack more level, turned down on the camera. And turned the de humidifier off… haha

Going to try this for my Blood Bowl team once I finish them! Love the idea!

Thanks for the tip! I’ll go see what I can find!

Great video Dave! Well timed as I was thinking about doing something like this, looks like a lot of fun too :D
Lovely little project. A great way to store small squad level units in style on the shelf

That's badass you should do comissions on those
If people paid more than the price of a takeaway I would! Otherwise I’ll just do them for myself
Amazing video Dave
Your videos and Film skills impress me every time. Each tim I watch a video i notice new techniques and I love them keep it up

I am absolutely doing this, what a great idea
Inspired to make one for my blood bowl team!

Working time is about 8-15 minutes. I ain’t rushing and getting it half wrong. Better to wait and pva it for me.
Where did you get the plinth from (I know you said e-bay but there are 100 plinth sellers on e-bay) and what dimensions is it?
I love the way this came out- my wife has been nagging me to do something like this- rather than stuffing them away in a foam box.
