  • Here, Seki Sensei demonstrates how the ancient warriors of Japan used the Jō staff to defend themselves against a sword. The Jō staff, a versatile weapon used by samurai warriors for centuries, is showcased in this video as we dive deep into traditional Jōjutsu techniques. Watch as we explore the powerful and fluid movements that made the Jō an essential part of the samurai’s combat arsenal.
Seki Sensei is a true treasure in the martial arts world, holding an 8th Dan in Iaido and the prestigious title of 22nd headmaster of Kobudo Asayama Ichiden Ryu. His dedication began early-starting Kendo at age 3, Iaido at 9, and later mastering Jodo and various other weapons like the bo staff, tamagusari chain, and kama sickle. A national Iaido champion three times over and twice a Jodo champion, Seki Sensei has spent his life refining his skills, not only as a martial artist but also as a teacher known for his kind, logical approach.
Interpreting alongside him, Shogo, the creator of “Let’s Ask Shogo” on UA-cam, brings his own depth of experience, including a 2nd Dan in Asayama Ichiden Ryu and Iaido. With his understanding of both the art and the language, Shogo bridges cultures, making Seki Sensei’s teachings accessible to students around the world. This video is a rare opportunity to learn the intricacies of katana handling from a true master and to deepen your appreciation for the art and discipline of Iaido.

Thank you Budo Brothers for featuring Seki Sensei again! I was hoping you would do a collab featuring Jo techniques, pretty awesome.
The Jo is such a versatile and practical weapon for self defense, and Sensei has some incredible skills with it.

Another great video with Seki-sensei! Thank you!
His smoothness really shines with his jo movements.
With katanas, he is impressive, but with the motions required to make the staff flow as it should, he really becomes a ghost with some of his transitions.
He is such a master 😮

0:36 From what I gathered shaku is almost 1 foot in length right? I’m 6ft 3” and have exactly size 12 foot so that’s handy for me whenever I’m mentally measuring anything in feet lol
I’m also wondering if that shorter one could be used a bit like a kali stick but gripped further up so the bit at the back of your hand could be used as a big hook or if it’s too long for that

Хотелось бы увидеть испытание силы ударов на манекене, неужели мечник будет бояться ударов палкой?

Yes but that doesn't mean the swordsman won't swing anyways. Those sticks are no joke but it doesn't mean you will stop an opponent from cutting you.

In these techniques, you're not just swinging wildly hoping to hit. You're aiming with the Jo and weak points, such as the temple, face, throat, wrist(to disarm) and so on.
As for whether a swordsman would be afraid, my guess is no. But Jo techniques were developed specifically to deal with "swordsmen", and have been used for that purpose for a long time. The Japanese police began using and training in Jo specifically to deal with Katana.
