Casting a Yellowjacket Nest with Molten Aluminum

  • Pouring molten aluminum into an under ground yellowjacket (wasp) nest. I’ve been waiting to make this video for a long time but I haven’t seen one in my yard, and in a suitable place to pour aluminum, since I posted my first video.
    Yellowjackets are a very aggressive wasp that build large nests in the ground and deliver many painful stings to anyone who disturbs them. I have experienced this myself several times. They hurt and can kill people who are allergic. Needless to say, you have to get rid of them if they’re in your yard.
    I melted around fifteen pounds of aluminum and most of that went in. You can see in the video that it didn’t quite fill the cavity completely. It looks like the paper nests were pushed up by the molten aluminum, so near the end I was just pouring aluminum onto a stack of paper wasp nests. I don’t think pouring more would have done much other than push those high enough to block the entrance, without adding much to the final cast.
    Soon after starting the pour, smoke from the burning nest built up pressure inside and burst through the ground. It looks a little more dramatic in the video than it actually was. It did startle me a little bit, I’m not going to lie, but I wasn’t in any real danger.
    Yellowjackets build nests in holes made by other animals. I knew that going in, and expected this would be an old ground squirrel hole or something similar. It actually seems to be built in an abandoned field ant colony. See my past videos to see a casting of a field ant colony. Yellowjackets don’t dig, but my understanding is that they can push the dirt around, which is why it’s more solid than an ant colony. I remember seeing a field ant colony in this area in the past and the entrance hole looked similar. I could be wrong about the species of ant but that long tunnel on the side was definitely made by ants and not a yellowjacket. The general shape also resembles an ant colony, although it has been altered by the yellowjackets and/or some intermediary animal.

      You’re allergic I get it, but they worked hard to make that nest and care for babies and this guy just ruined it all, wasps are very important to the environment , pest control and pollination are done by them, and people use the excuse “honeybees already do” but that isn’t an excuse because that is mostly jut honeybees and they are endangered, also wasps do eat bees, yes, but they are not the cause of the endangerment, animals are nearly never the cause of endangerment, the wasps are just eating food, these animals do not deserve hell for having survival instincts that people don’t like because of their selfish selves.

      It shouldn't really be so complicated to explain, but the result has to be seen, especially with the larger, more complicated ant nests. It would be pretty difficult to explain the shapes in words. Of course if you start to explain all the safety measures and such when working with molten aluminium, details matter a lot.

      Yeah, I should have worded that better. The best info I can find, and looking at the cast, they're definitely moving the dirt around inside but I don't think they actually pick up dirt and remove it from the hole.

    • @NefariousTropy
      @NefariousTropy 4 роки тому +25

      @@AnthillArt Actually they do remove dirt from the hole and fly it several yards away from the nest site before dropping it. Ground nesting wasps are honestly incredible. In areas with rockier soil, its not uncommon for yellowjacket nests to have a small pile of gravel sitting at the bottom from where they excavated out everything they could lift.

    • @Dargonhuman
      @Dargonhuman 4 роки тому +18

      @@AnthillArt There are several UA-cam channels that focus on wasps and hornets, two of the more prominent being Hornet King and Wasp Hunter, and their videos are quite educational and informative about how wasp and hornet nests are built. Hornet King taught me that ground nesting yellowjackets do in fact dig out the holes to expand their nests, but you are correct in that they don't start the holes, they just move in and expand a pre-existing chamber. Most often they take over ant colonies or animal burrows but they've been known to use rotted out roots too - I know that one personally as 15 years ago I had to deal with a ground nest in an oak rootball that I didn't even know was under my lawn.
