Ok, I was inspired by your awesome video and the curious idea you present. So.. I tried it and made a thumb and video to experiment. Also ensured I ticked don’t share with my subscribers option. But… not even YT is pushing it to anyone… it’s literally had no impressions… which is unusual. I’ll let you know once it has any impressions and hence views compared to my other content how it goes. 🤷🏻♂️
I like Ed’s advice but it doesn’t work on a lot of videos that I make. My audience doesn’t want click bait style thumbnails or to be told stories. They just want “teach me how to do x” on the guitar, ukulele or piano.
That’s great advice. Especially the split testing. If you are a smaller channel DON’T DO SPLIT TESTING. I had videos crash and burn because of it. Do it but manually if your impression are slow. I will go back and change some thumbnails right now. Thank you
@@brewswithviews same i manually do it so I can change thumbnails once I have enough data. Tied all the different apps and fit a small channel like mine it doesn’t work well.
I have a spreadsheet. That tells me which videos have done a lot better than other videos, including the thumbnail and tile. So I tried what you were saying and instead of getting around £9 to £12 RPM per video, I got £5. I will admit I did get more views, but the video has not taken off. I'm still of the opinion that keeping a spreadsheet of your best thumbnails and titles is the way forward.
I have watched several of your videos and this is some great advice in this one, which is a must-watch for new UA-camrs like myself. I will incorporate some of the ideas into my videos, and possibly go back and simplify my thumbnails and titles. As a new YTer, I have been watching many other videos on how to grow a channel & improve video quality, the biggest takeaway I have gained in the last month is to create content the audience is looking for versus what I want to share, maybe there is a good balance between the two. Thanks
Juat awesome as always! Love this. Effeciancy and effectivness, the perfect combo. Making thumbnails is the one thing I dread when creating content. This is an brilliant framework that will simpllfy the process and create more time for creating content. Thanks so much!
Hi, Ed, I'm on your email lists!! (Such good advice - thank you!) 2 questions. 1) Your recommendation for how long a small channel should wait for results till they switch thumbs? 2) Would you consider making a video about creating titles (that we could then match to these kinds of thumbnails that we do from the advice in this video)? It would really help us small creators a lot!!
I need to get better with thumbnails I tried to do a template to keep using to save time but don't feel like it's working. May sit today and use some of your tips to improve in this. Thank you for the awesome content you share, I love watching your videos.
You just have to be ready to get popular as fast as possible. Trends are always the same, just give people some fun and knowledge in your content, and you are good to go. Of course, it can be tough to get to that point when you are noticed enough (that's why I am using a lot of Famester for every video I post).
The tip about asking AI for titles or ideas "that create cognitive dissonance" is so good! You still have to use your brain but it is great for getting ideas. Super helpful, thanks!
Thank you for the awesome tips. Just fixed a some thumbnails for my podcast by removing the distracting background in PhotoShop and using a simple title. I'm now doing A/B thumbnail testing, but already fairly sure the black simpler thumbnail is going to get more views.
What about the click bait quality of creating cognitive dissonance? does it reduce trust in you and your channel? Great tips about short, 4 word text in high contrast, and matching facial expressions. Great tip about taking batch facial expression pics. Thanks.
Just released a video which I knew would underperform due to the topic, but its done exceptionally bad due to the package. Implementing this strategy now and rewriting the title. 🤞
Hey man, I know your pain so here’s something I learnt. Looks like you’re going for the gaming niche which is ULTRA competitive. If you don’t have another channel then I’d strongly advise you make just 5 or so videos in a way less competitive niche. You’ll see the difference is huge. I’ve made bad videos in easy niches and still got 10,000+ views and I’ve also made really good videos in hard niches and got 0 views. Give it a try if you haven’t already 👍🏻
@@Jd7172g I have never thought about that. Thank you for your tip. I will think about a new niche and for a new channel and think about some video ideas. But should you really make other niche videos on the same channel ? Doesn't that hurt your channel because of confusing the algorithm, or is that just some made-up theories ?
@@viccsi yeah you should do it on a separate channel not your current one. I’d say have a go at making videos about things that people need, but aren’t very interesting, like ‘5 ways to stop slugs eating your plants’ (I duuno if that is competitive or not though, I just made it up, but that kind of idea 😄). Hopefully it’ll give you some motivation because you’ll see that you are actually pretty good at videos, you’re just playing in a really hard niche
the best part was batching photos of yourself. i hate taking thumbnail photos after I do a clip (becuase I always forget. So now (from tomoz) I film myself in a range of postures for 1 minute and that's it for a year. ;)
Interesting. Just trying to see how this would work in my videos on sports. Not sure there's a translation here. But I have noticed on my thumbnail that consistently applying a deep black background against simple white text works pretty good. My method is white text white outline black shadow black background full opacity on the background...it always makes it super easy to read
@@AFrenchguyinEngland awesome now we both learned something....having someone verify something that works for you makes it awesome. But the lesson perhaps is that text that really pops and is EASY To read is priceless
i've had this channel for a decade. it got a lot of popularity back in the gaming days and got up to 8k subs. i quit for a while and the channel died. i'm trying to get back into youtube as i started to make car content with some life advice at the end of my videos. but i feel like my video's is not getting the outreach. should i just start a new channel? it's very demotivating :(
I bet no one sees this, but I would just like to say, Ed is a legend and thank you to his knowledge. Hopefully my channel will grow in time with his great Teachings. Keep Grinding everyone. We will make it... eventually 😂

You should make a video about UA-camrs targeting their videos to people who've fallen asleep. The Spiffing Brit just did a video on this idea.

I hope you didn't delete it...
Some people have left a channel.. only to find it's gained a load of views and subscribers..
Just a thought...

Often times, I feel I overthink the simplicity of the task. I am guilty of this, but thank you for providing insights on better thumbnails!
Always amazes me how much information you can pack into a 6 minute video, Ed :)
