I like that the hooks justify why they're making the content (essentially, why I should be compelled to watch) rather than just mere pointless/skippable footage of what happens later.
I've actually seen many videos in incredibly niche audiences do incredibly well for exactly this reason, that manage to weave an interesting story out of something that doesn't always necessarily on first thought make sense with it. Great video Ed!
This is the most practical and helpful video I’ve ever watched. Thank you so much Ed! I’ve been filming a 30 day weight loss challenge for the past 2.5 weeks and I wasn’t quite sure how to package it once I’m finished. So I couldn’t have asked for a more timely video from you!!!
Ed, that was a legitimately brilliant video. As a screenwriter and a UA-cam content creator, even though I'm familiar with all these steps, I've always struggled to apply them to my UA-cam content. Very well done and thank you for creating the UA-cam storytelling scaffolding I needed to FINALLY start using storytelling techniques in my own content 🙂
I am actually working on a script on recapping what ive been doing this year and got stuck, this video gave me new ideas to make it more exciting. Thank you brother 🙏
I have watched this video before. Before I had come up with my soon to be started Table Top Family Gaming Channel (Name still being worked.) But rewatching this, with my new channel in mind, you just gave me the idea of my first video. The whole things started because I was faced with a challenge. My kid was being taught to not use their imagination. Their father had gotten them to the point where they were refusing to play with Legos without an instruction book. They couldn't come up with stories, or think up solutions to things that normal 8 year olds, at least when I was 8, could come up with. I immediately thought of Dungeons and Dragons. What's a more imaginative game than Table Top Role Playing? The challenge was set: How do you play D&D, a notoriously adult style game, with kids? I spent months watching D&D channels, trying to find "tips on how to DM for kids," and so much more information. I spent hours on DNDBeyond, on various player made sites, and listening to people like Ginny D, One Shot Questers, and Critical Role. If I didn't start something soon, my child was going to lose their imagination ability forever. (Drama, I know...but I truly feel that our imagination is developed in childhood.) I started with the board game Adventure Begins. We played slow. It's 4 boards and you play 1 of 4 premade characters. I found a video that showed me how it's played because comprehending game instructions can be hard sometimes. We played. Straight play, nothing special. And my kid fell in love! The next time we played, I started making house rules for the game and asked my kid to give his character voice. And boy did they deliver! Suddenly, this medium pitched child became a deep voiced dwarf with a battle ax. They'd explain what they did to the bad guy (it was in that moment I decided all violence in my games would be brought to their level and no higher...) The next step was getting people together for an actual game. That's when we met with now very close friends B and A. B is another mom who's played before a long long time ago and loved the idea. A was her kid who was just a couple years older than mine. We tried for months, tried a session 0 to create characters, spent hours pulling teeth to get things decided, then something happened with B and the game was put aside. Until I texted her one day saying "You wanna come over for dinner? Maybe play Adventure begins with the kids?" Thing is, we had just moved... and I couldn't find the box that held the game... No worries. I'll...come up with a campaign. A one shot. Sure... And suddenly, as if everything had culminated to this one moment, I HAD THE IDEA! I already had some self set rules on playing with the kids, but it occurred to me that the important part to get started was simply to get them into the mechanics of the game, and using their brains to think of ways out of things. I'll save the campaign story for the video (we will be having session 3 this weekend and we've encountered a challenge that I, the DM, must face with the party myself...autonomy. Kids aren't used to thinking Mom might not always be there....) If you've read all this, thank you! I was going to make it short, but I just kept writing...because watching this video reminded me that this is my challenge that sparked everything that I'm preparing to build. The channel I'm going to be building already has more ideas fleshed out in my head and on paper than my ukulele or crochet channels ever have. I've got ideas for shorts with tips for games with kids, ideas for how to play D&D and other games, and even thoughts on reviewing games and showing families games that bring the family back to the table. I'm still working the name, but the overall idea is bringing the family back to game night....which may morph later to just playing a game night with friends. Anyway... Thank you for all you do and post and teach us!
It's like those challenge videos are designed to keep you hooked until the very end. That's some serious retention game right there, and it totally makes sense when you think about it.
Thanks for the relatable b-roll, a lot of folks tell you the storytelling steps, but don’t have good stories to follow along. Yours were so much easier to understand! Thanks for the time of putting this together! 👍🏻
Ed, your videos are so well-put-together that I can't even watch them on my phone or computer. I have to plug them up to my biggest TV screen and best speakers and watch them from there.
Wow this video was absolutely amazing 🎉 Thank you so much I'm a new youtuber I traveled to Hawaii to see what the hype was about I was wondering how to create my content on it and this totally gave me the game plan! Thank you so much. I'm a new subscriber 😊... Your content is awesome 🎉
Thanks Ed! This was exactly what I needed. I film trail guides, but I’m now trying to edit my first overland guide (trails with camping). I never thought about the guide as a challenge, but it was. I feel more confident in making an entertaining video now while still providing a useful video for others that want to recreate my route. Thanks again!
Ed. You did it. I watched entire video and also subscribed. Further more, it is 5 am here in Poland. I was about to go and shoot another boring bike check, but you just destroyed my script. I will do my video your way. Let see what will happen. Thanks. DrEbike
This is my first time to watch any of your content, and although this is far beyond where I am currently, I gleaned very helpful information from this. Thank you!
Long time watcher, first time commenter. We don’t deserve this video, but it’s the video we’ve all needed. I’ve been working on a list of challenges to do. Now I know exactly where to start and how to succeed from there. Thank you, Ed!!
Another fabulous video as always! I'm working on a video at the moment about taking a cruise where we were told pre-cruise that there was an illness outbreak onboard, the challenge I suppose is 'did we all have a good time without getting sick'. 😂😂 I've tried to include stakes being that I'd not seen friends for years etc. Fingers crossed it works! 😇
This was one of your best videos yet Ed, I watched the entire thing and you had my attention throughout. The point about cutting the points of the journey that don't affect the outcome was very valuable to me, I've not heard things put that way before and I definitely had a lightbulb moment when you talked about that. I recently watched 'Attack on Titan' all the way through and the storytelling was constructed in a similar way and the ending was so satisfying partly because of that (every story beat on the characters journey had a purpose and effect on the eventuality).
This is incredibly valuable, Ed. I now have a personalised template to work off, which I'm applying right now to my next video script. Thank you so much for this.
it's taken 3 yrs but I was finding my way to this exact process, but I hadn't fully solved the point made at minute 13:00. Thanks for sharing. Combining this with the concept of maintaining the stakes throughout the vlog, is the really the ticket.
Hey Ed! I just did this on my channel to celebrate my 33rd birthday yesterday 🎉 Now I’ll be showing up every week - looking forward to the results over time!
Small channel here. Thanks for this! I accidentally did some of this in my last video. I came in last in a cycling challenge, but it seemed to make a good video with heaps more views than I normally get! I have a lot more to learn and try out.
Another banger video Ed! Just in time for me to start filming my next project. Couple of script changes to the intro after watching this and I'm pretty confident about my next video now. Thanks
Brilliant! There is another hidden stage that most don't use and that is the unscripted moments, the surprises along the way, the hidden gems that show up and get in the way...these can be small or large yet are always spontaneous - it's being open and aware to capture random stuff that is just fun - in short it's planning for the unplanned parts that just show up...
@@creator-booth Derral Eves worked with a creator doing off-road recovery and they initially didn't include footage of them getting coffee...Derral said to put it in and even though it wasn't the recovery part it became very popular - obviously you have a gift because you have/make these funny relatable moments that are super fun to watch - for some of us it's harder to find those moments - that's part of why the unscripted is key as it can reveal those...
This is interesting. I like this. I dont know why this "how to create UA-cam videos" content is suddenly showing up on my feed. I don't plan to become a UA-cam creator, yet i can apply what you have just taught me. Life is full of challenges. I believe recording my journey will help me stick to my goal. I like the way the whole journey is completed and then edited and posted. So basically you put yourself through a journey and once complete, decide whether to post the recording.
Over the last week, I've been trying to figure out what to do with my next video in post-production. I went on an amazing fishing trip. Shot some incredible footage, but most of the audio is garbage (cause GoPro is garbage). The only thing I could figure is talking about the trip in story form using footage to illustrate what happened. All of that to say thank you for this video cause it gave me some great ideas to go about putting my next video together despite not having audio. Keep up the great work!
Did you know you can see how many subscribers you had on any certain day! (like when you hit a milestone) A lot of people miss this but when you go on live subscriber count just underneath shows the timeline of when you gained subscribers! I didn't know this for a while but now I do and it's real cool to see!
Thank you thank you thank you! I'm so bored of forcing my talking head videos - plus they're getting minimal traction. Definitely switching to this model today.
Great, great, valuable video. Thank you so much for making it. I appreciate it. learned ALL the mistakes I've been making and correcting them starring today.
I watched your “monetized in 6 weeks” video about 5 times start to finish so can defo see what you’re talking about. Probably couldn’t have articulated what my behaviour was though so I appreciate you spelling it out for me!
Damn, some perfect timing. I just did a 11:11 hr Challenge 5 days ago. So awesome you gave this framework, will be looking forward to implementing it - thank you kindly Ed 😁
