The thing that scares me the most about Kuvira is how charismatic she is. Like when she was speaking to Korra I genuinely believed she made the villages she conquered a better place. It’s scary
She technically did, in a way. But it was the price of freedom that she did not mention. Kuvira was the antithesis to Zahir. Zahir sought absolute freedom in chaos, Kuvira sought absolute security in order.
The music in this scene delivers a really hopeless feeling to the battle. Everything Korra does is dodged, stopped, reflected, or overpowered. And every moment Korra makes a mistake, she's attacked faster than she can see it coming. Kuvira won't even let her recover her stance easily. And it becomes clear that Korra is slowing down very quickly, because she's taking heavy damage very quickly.. all the while this somber tune plays in the backgrounds of the battle. There won't be a triumph here. Korra is still not ready to fight Kuvira head on. And it's tragic, because Korra knows she needs to be.

Kuvira had such potential to be a damned impressive villain. The problem is that she went from being a female Napoleon to being a female Hitler/Stalin far too quickly. It's like... they couldn't figure out a way to make such a person who was bringing actual order to the Earth Kingdom into a villain without the whole "HEIL KUVIRA!" aspect. I mean concentration camps? Why was that necessary? How was she supposed to be any better than Hou Ting who was doing the same thing....?
Agreed, there's no point where the audience has to at least stop and consider Kuvira's vision for an Earth Empire might be better for its citizens in the long run. I mean, they did it way back in season 1. Nope, they're poor and oppressed just like before! I don't think fascism is a good choice, but its demands for unquestioning loyalty to one's leader and nation could seem reasonable to a people in anarchy.
You known the proverb "the HELL is paved by good intentions"... because once you acquire UNCHECKED BY ANYONE POWER (as was in Kuvira's case)... the temptation for ULTIMATE POWER become way too strong, and such leaders are stopping to listen of ANY voice of reason... not to mention that those around such power hungry leader self become it's pawns blinded by the greed...
Unfortunately, due to the one season production limit I felt like most of the villains in Korra had rushed/underdeveloped motivations. ...Then again, the original series had three seasons to flesh out the fire lord and make him more of a complicated villain, but he still ended up being a very generic "Big Bad".
I actually felt like Kuvira was a very impressive villain. Yes, she did quickly rise to become a tyrannical dictator. However, her intentions were always good and as revealed in the finale, her heart was in the right place. She simply got carried away trying to help the Earth Kingdom after it felt apart. She had a backstory, and she wasn't like...I don't know...OZAI, who was the most generic of the generic antagonists.
For me the problem comes down to how they handled Kuvira's arc. It made the last minute revelations feel rather tacked on. I mean, the labor camp thing is what really grates on my nerves. Anything resembling the Concentration Camps or the Soviet Gulags instantly screams "BAD GUY!" to me. From a literary perspective, I would've preferred them to honestly examine how life in Kuvira's Earth Empire was being impacted by her bringing order to a massive state wracked with warlords and bandits. For me, it would've been a much more compelling story to have there be actual doubts about removing Kuvira as the head of the Earth Empire. The idea of potentially inviting chaos back into the country would be a very real consequence of removing a stabilizing figure like Kuvira, I think. I mean, yeah Kuvira would still have usurped Prince Wu and all that, but at the same time she's not reduced to a mustache twirling Saturday morning cartoon villain...
You likely won’t find a version without all of the other sound effects and dialogue until they officially release the tracks. Nickelodeon has the official soundtrack locked up tight, so in all reality, we may never see them. But I remain hopeful that someday we will!

In the avatar universe water usually doesn't have that much of an advantage over earth. Considering the philosophy behind the elements, earth is supposed to directly oppose the ideology of water, which is to stop "going with the flow" altogether and stand your ground. If anything, air should counter earth, as it would either uproot the grounded nature of the earthbender, or completely evade it altogether. Most commonly, water has the upper hand over fire if it is available in adequate amounts. These would be the core advantages within the elements, however that obviously doesn't mean that battles will play out according to the inherent advantages. Several other factors are at play. Kuvira herself is pretty light on her feet, and has a unique style of bending which will make her far more flexible than a typical earthbender.
maybe because she had depression and ptsd and hasn't had a real fight in 3 years. everytime she loses (which isnt a lot) she has a legitimate reason to lose
