  • in this video i show you how to replace the key door lock cylinder. the bmw door key isnt made to be used every single say, its made for emergencies when the battery dies, or key damages. unlike e46 and e39 which have repair kits available, the e60 ive only found you have to replacement the cylinder. in this video, although not as step by step DIY as i usually film, i did get the major parts so that it should help you replace yours.
    thanks for watching!

    I can confirm that you can disassemble the E60 lock barrel and swap the locking part for your key over.
    Also, I have found that it can be repaired with the same parts as for the E46.

      Yes I figured this out as well, almost exactly like doing the e46. I have since fixed my original key barrel

      Does the cylinder not come out like the cylinder on the e46 as well? It looks like it's so much easier to remove...

      @@1shanta Yes, it is very much the same.

      @@stevencrombie9429 the lock and repair process is most definitely the same, but the removal process is not! Ugh. Lol E46 the lock comes straight out from the outside of the door, no door panel removal, no handle removal even and I hoped that was true for my E60 as well... but nope. 🤣 But it's all done now. Hoping to not have to do it. Ever again...

    My E60 door barrel broke years ago, when I was using it to get in at the time the remote key stopped working.
    Now my remote key fob receiver in the car has have stopped working (I've tried both keys and checked the battery for charge, even jumped it off another car).
    I'm trying to think of the best way in. So far, my options are:
    1 - Smash side glass. Easiest option but messy and additional work to replace side glass.
    2 - get in through the boot. Fixed rear seats but it _does_ seem as though i can unlatch the top of the rear seat from within the boot, which could give me enough access to get a rod into the cabin and press the dashboard Unlock button.
    3 - Drill-out the door lock. Not a guaranteed solution but if I can then manage to turn the spindle on the other side of the door lock, I can get in.
    Luckily I have another car to use.
    Another other suggestions welcome !

      Have you tested both keys for signal? It could be both keys just stopped working and you can replace the battery to get it working again. Far as the doorlock cyclinder, since this video came out I’m able to rebuild them so I can always fix the one you have or send you a rebuilt one matched to your key if you end up drilling out and breaking yours. I would try have the keys tested to see if they even send signal as changing battery in the key would be the easiest

      Thanks for your reply.
      It _could_ be both keys but I sent both of them off a few years ago to be fixed/have new batteries fitted.
      When I bought the car way back in 2011, I got 2 keys with it. Only 1 ever worked on the remote. Then the on I used stopped working on the remote, so I used the door lock for a while... until the barrel broke, as you've shown.
      For years I never bothered ocking the car.
      When I learnt of a key repair/battery replacement place, I sent the old dead one off first. Got that back and they'd done an excellent job, so I then sent off the 2nd one to be fixed.
      I tested both and both worked.
      Now neither work.
      My suspicion is that due to an ingress of water the other month, from blocked cabin-filter drainage channels under the bonnet/screen, the water that had got in has made the interior damp. WIth a recent freeze is when the car stopped being able to be unlocked.
      Quite a story behind that but that's how it is.
      I'll try the rear seat first.

    Hey man so I have an issue with my 06 525i my obd doesn't want to communicate with a generic scan tool so I can't get it to pass emissions due to that. Was wondering if you had any idea wat it can be. Thanks man and keep up the great videos

    • @roskinc
      @roskinc  6 років тому

      probably the most obvious but did you check the fuses? check the connection behind the obd2 connector to see its connected.

    • @josegallegos2350
      @josegallegos2350 6 років тому

      So I did and all fuses are good the obd does have power and will communicate with the BMW software tools just not the generic ones which is the problem because that's the one they use to do the emissions test

    • @roskinc
      @roskinc  6 років тому +1

      Jose Gallegos my guess would be the pin 16 not giving power to the device. Try check the connection in the back To make sure all the pins are good. Use a tester to see if it’s giving power

      Okay I'll check it and let u know if it worked. At one point I took it to a bmw shop and they want to charge me 1,500.00 because they say my safety micro control module needs to be replaced and coded to the car but I'm just not sure there telling me the truth.

    • @roskinc
      @roskinc  6 років тому

      i have a video on checking the micro module. they do tend to get damaged on these vehicles, but you can easily tell, plus you would be having all sorts of electrical issues if it was bad

      Yes, but since this video I’ve been able to fix the door lock cylinder. So basically this video is good for knowing how to remove the door lock cylinder. I will start selling fixed door lock cylinders made to your specific key for e60

      Where can i buy a new lock cylinder

    • @lewis72

      My remote locking died years ago on my E60 (it's a key fob fault), so I used the key lock to lock/unlock it but then that soon broke (plus the alarm would go off every time).
      Annoyingly, I took the car & key to an auto electrical repair workshop. The guy dismantled the key and it started working again immediately, so he reassembled it. It kept woking for a full 24 hours (although I never used it to lock the car as I had no way of getting in if I couldn't unlock it), when it packed up again.
      Also annoyingly, the E60 only has a key on the driver's side. Older cars have key locks on both front doors.
      One could, I suppose, get a door from a LHD/RHD car to get key operation for the other side but that seems a bit of a faff.
