    WOW your videos are amazing. We just purchased our first home and we decided to do certain things ourselves instead of taking 30 years to pay for them. Therefore, we are going to sheetrock our garage but needed some guidance. Your video explains a lot of things that we didn't understand. Defintely looking forward to this DIY project.

    I learned to tape drywall with an Ames automatic taper (bazooka) and flat boxes in the late 1970's. I was pretty pleased with myself. Then in the 1990's I worked with a hand taper who was excellent. Never got mud on himself or the floor. His hand taping was done a little different than this. But man he could tape 150 to 200 12' sheets a day by himself. Super clean. His hand finish work looked like it was done with a flat box. Everything dead straight and quite fast. All the guys in the crew really cleaned up their act after working with him.

    You should try Fibra-Fuse tape. You'll never go back to paper. It's not mesh tape, it's micro thin fiberglass matting. Doesn't require the 1/32" behind the tape, so it sits flatter to the board with a stronger mechanical bond.
    Try it out. I get mine at S-W.

  • @dempsterlee5309

    The quick and easy way to cut out boxes is use a keyhole saw .
    Cut from top to bottom and left to right inside the box making a +. Then using a
    drywall knife cut down both sides and across top and bottom right at the edge of your saw cuts
    You can then break out the drywall inside the box with your knife handle and then saw around the outside of
    the box . Just use the tip of your saw so you don't break the drywall . I see this reply was 5 months ago but I thought I would reply to this anyway

    These videos will help you do a small project but not info to make a living at it . I think to do this right you need to work with a machine taper. The only way a make good money is to learn how to use a bazooka and 10 &12 inch finish boxes There lots of other tools to like bead rollers and angle flushers . There are some good hand tapers out there but speed is the name of the game . Contractors expect near flawless work these days

    We want to do away with the wood walls in our house but with us living in it with kids and it being built in the 20s we are concerned about what's behind the walls and if it's hazardous. Could we throw dry wall over the wood walls? Luckily it wasn't that way in the bathroom so I was able to get that done with the kids gone for the weekend but the wood runs through out the rest of the house. Thanks!!

    • @BasementFinishingMan
      @BasementFinishingMan  9 років тому

      Ashley Wilt If the wood surface is nice and "flat", secured well and in decent shape you could surely drywall over it. But...I would personally rip that wood off one wall and see what you have behind it! It might just be old plaster and that's not a hazard to work with, and I would rather drywall over old plaster than a wood wall. Thanks for stopping by my channel Ashley!

    what do ya do when Mudd is drying clumping up in hoot weather

    • @BasementFinishingMan
      @BasementFinishingMan  7 років тому

      If you're referring to mud in your 5 gallon bucket clumping...first keep your lid clean and on tight when not using the mud. You can add a little water to the mud and use a mixing paddle and a drill to "whip-up" the mud until it becomes "creamy" again.

    • @ronaprescott4007
      @ronaprescott4007 7 років тому +1

      Basement Finishing Man Ok, we also have drywall that's buckling or you can see where two of them were joined together. Let me guess why we have that because someone didn't have the correct consistency of the mix, they didn't do the mix over the tape or they used too much mix. Last question...I promise. Is it pretty easy to fix drywall that is cracked at a corner and what could really cause the drywall to crack in the corners?

    • @BasementFinishingMan
      @BasementFinishingMan  7 років тому +1

      Hi Rona! Usually it's an issue of not applying your joint compound(Drywall Mud) correctly during the coating stages of the finish work.And a poor sanding job can also contribute to this effect.
      You could re-tape and finish those cracked inside corners and fix that issue quite easily in doing so.
      Eddie

    Drywalling isn't hard, you say? I agree. Neither is playing guitar. That's why folks doing both are a dime a dozen. But a good tradesman, whether it's drywall hanger, painter, carpenter, or whatever, is always in demand because of the quality of their work. I wouldn't hire a novice to do my work when I can hire a journeyman, or master, who've proven their quality. And the best ones are reliable/dependable. That thins the herd more. If you're willing to do all the above then you'll be great!

    at least check for blister before applying mud to it. If there's a blister, chip and pre fill them then apply mud to tape. Sometime hangers does a piss poor cut out job

    When do you use that mesh tape?

      We don't use mesh tape JP...only paper tape.

      I found out the hard way that paper tape is stronger than mesh tape.
      I got hairline cracks at the seams after using mesh tape so I emptied the room out again and carefully ground out all the long joints with a small grinder and a stiff scraper and then used paper tape this time.
      Maybe the mesh tape wouldn't have cracked if I used a setting compound first instead of regular joint compound but I'm never going to take that chance again if i do another drywall renovation because it was a long process to fix the problem.

      WE never use mesh tape...only paper. Mesh tape is over rated.

      Interesting. I use mesh in all my seams. Only had a problem once. Used blue lid for first coat instead of green. Now I use 90 min or 45 min to do 1st and 2nd on seams then blue for final coat. Finish a room in one day and the powder dries hard as a rock. No cracks.

      +renaissancemen1 Not saying it's not a great product...just saying it costs more and does no more really than standard paper tape for most residential drywall finishing purposes.

    If the tape has to be wet, can you just soak the tape in water for a second?

    • @BasementFinishingMan
      @BasementFinishingMan  6 років тому +1

      You could but that is never done in the real world of drywall finishing...but it can be done.

      If you do that, you risk ripping the tape when you wipe it down. It may lose too much of its structural integrity, using mud mixed with water you are not soaking the tape. Not the best idea to soak the tape.

      My buddy does drywall that's what he does. He runs his tape through the water then puts his knife at about a 45 and presses the tape in the first mud coat to hold, then brings it to a 90 and scrapes it into the mud across the wall. He came over to help with my garage it looks pretty damn good. Another cool trick I seen him do, is he stands on a 5 gallon bucket and walks it across the floor to do the ceiling pretty cool.

    Good, informative video. One suggestion, however: one voice, not two, for the narrative. At times, one of you interrupts the other. It's distracting. Thanks.
