      Not really..Ryan when he played for the Seahawks used this style and could kick it over 60 yards and the English it had on it was sick. He even got so good at it he could time it to where the point would just touch the ground as his foot hit the ball..he could punt it endzone to end zone like a kick off

      Swiping more often than not gives more power. Really gets the hip into it more than staying linear. Linear is more consistent though

    • @erics607
      @erics607 Рік тому

      Incorrect. There was an Aussie punter who played for the Cowboys back in 1965 that did this, but it didn't catch on. Then Darren Bennett started doing it for the San Diego Chargers back in the mid 90's. Very few NFL teams adopted the Aussie style punts back then even though there were several Aussie punters who tried out for the NFL. Then in 2007 Nathan Chapman started Prokick Australia to teach Aussies how to do the spiral punt that the NFL wants, as well as how to incorporate Aussie rules punting into the NFL. It's only been within the past 15 or so years where this type of punt has started to really catch on at the NCAA level, and eventually work it's way into the NFL on a more consistent basis.

      this is an drop PUNT that is used in Australian rules football and now in American football

    • @willatwood
      @willatwood Рік тому

      @@thekickingconsultantI get it, but I'm not sure why they're not kicking it as far as a normal punt. I mean, it looks exactly the same as a normal punt. A punter kicking it the American "normal" way were used to would catch the snap, take his step and drop it right before he punts it downfield. The only change here is the angle of them kicking it.

    • @erics607
      @erics607 Рік тому

      @@willatwood They're kicking it this way because these kids aren't used to the roll out technique. You can get more torque into the punt using the Aussie style, but these kids aren't used to it. You can do it the normal punt way, or you can do it with a roll out which allows the coverage unit more time to get down the field, and thus makes it more difficult for the returner to field the punt. The unique thing with the Aussie style is that they are taught at a young age to take off running if there's a huge hole. If the return team decides to drop too many players for a return, an Aussie punter will automatically tuck the ball and take off running provided the yardage to gain is manageable. The American punters are never taught to think like that. It's essentially a read option in the punting world, and no matter what the return team decides to do, it's an incorrect decision.

    • @jongordon7914
      @jongordon7914 6 місяців тому

      @@erics607 It's a different game. You can't take more time to kick the ball because you're then susceptible to getting the punt blocked. And a "huge hole" in the NFL closes in a matter of seconds because of everyone's speed. Punters in the NFL are set back 15 yards from the line of scrimmage (where the ball is snapped) so thinking run-first is a really bad idea unless they've got Olympic-like speed.
      An average NFL punter makes about twice what the highest-paid player in either Aussie Football or Rugby Union (or whatever is the highest Rugby League) makes so if it was as simple as that, every punter in the NFL would be Australian or European but as it is only a handful of Australian players a year ever make a team in the NFL.

    • @erics607
      @erics607 6 місяців тому

      @@jongordon7914 I know that. The Aussie style works better in high school, and college where the speed isn't at the level it is in the NFL. The problem Aussies have with American football, is they're not used to receiving a snap, and having to kick the ball a certain style in about 3 seconds.

    Why do they hold it like that

    • @erics607
      @erics607 Рік тому +1

      Because it creates an end over end kick that returners aren't used to catching. Also by running out to the side, it allows an additional 3-5 seconds for the coverage unit to get down the field, and makes it near impossible for big returns. It also allows for more accuracy on the kicks, and if the ball is held at the correct angle while trying to kick it inside the 10 yard line, it will either bounce a few yards forward and kick to the side, or it will bounce backwards thus preventing a touchback. It's a genius way of doing it IMO, but American coaches are stubborn about changing how punting should be done.
