  • A few years ago I finally acquired my grail watch. But this was no ordinary grail...this watch was 140 years in the making. In this video I delve deep into the story behind one of the most important chronograph watches ever made, and a favorite of iconic actor Steve McQueen-the Hanhart 417 ES. I travel to Germany for a behind-the-scenes look at where this classic watch was created, and share the story of one of the country's greatest watch brands and how they created one of the most influential military chronographs of all time. Join me for an exclusive tour of the Hanhart watch factory in Germany's beautiful Black Forest region, where I chat with the Hanhart team about their watchmaking process, the brand's history, the creation of their museum, the evolution of their timepieces, and why they have such an exciting and promising future ahead of them.

This is the peak of horology content. A blissful half hour that's part-How It's Made, and part museum tour. This has honestly made my week.
I'll admit, Hanhart weren't always a house I kept an eye on and I had no clue about their history, but this was incredible. Seeing their history and heritage, their truly in house production and perhaps more impressively, passionate young men who love what they do and are certain to keep this place going for another century.

They are so likeable at Hanhart, this is really a great but modest and sincere company.
In 2001 I've asked them to do me a 1941 Replica in steel with the gold plated, decorated 7751 movement of the "Gold Chronograph" and they actually did it!
The watch was running on the wrist at + 1 second per day and lost in position crown up 1 second during the night. After 9 months I've stopped controlling the watch since it kept that performance: incredible!

The Hanhart factory is different from what I was expecting. I assumed it would be much more like the Swiss watch factories, as in very clinical and modern. Like a laboratory. But apart from that CNC machine and final assembly room, it still resembles what such factories must of looked like, say 60/70 years ago. I also have to mention the sheer enthusiasm of that very young CEO…he really loves what he does!

Only just started watching this but loving it already..When I lived in Germany we visited the beautiful Black Forest around Lake Titisee and Freiburg. Amazing. My favourite place in the world. TGV, Hanhart, Black Forest, Germany.....what else do you need. Thank you in advance my friend as I'm going to enjoy this 🙏

My gosh TGV, just when I feel bored of the watch world you drop an absolute banger of a video like this and I'm pulled right back in! This honestly feels like a high quality documentary, a deep dive looking into the hidden gems of German watchmaking history. As always, you're a step above the rest TGV. All the Best, K.

Hanhart is my grail watch. During a recent trip to Europe I was disappointed that the only Hanhart dealer in the country I was visiting had no watches on their floor. But I am undaunted! Your video was a beautifully filmed, deep dive into scholarship topped off with ladles of genuine enthusiasm for the brand. I am dying to get a 417es on my wrist!!

Especially as a German I am glad and happy that you have made this beautiful portrait about Hannhart.
This is really not mass-produced and therefore one waits gladly for his Hannhart .
After looking at it, I had to put on my 417ES right away.
    Thanks for stopping by.

Heritage makes a company strong. And keeping the same people in the house is important too. Companies fail because they forget their heritage and let their people go. Stay strong, Hanhart. ❤️🇺🇸🦅

I am actually from Freiburg a city relatively close to the Hanhart factory, cool to see a part of the black forrest, that I know since my childhood, in your video.

TGV, brilliant video! Such a genuine and non-pretentious brand. I work for a German company with a long history and heritage and your tour of the factory reminded me so much of the countless tours I have had of my factory in Germany. Different products, different markets, but the format, atmosphere and ethos are exactly the same.
I have a few vintage Hanhart stopwatches that I treasure. I am still saving up for my Hanhart wrist watch. I feel even more motivated now. Greetings!

Thank you for opening my eyes to the brand , this brand must of slipped through my radar over the years, I think we all concentrate on the Swiss or Japanese brands to much and forget others that have been going on for years. Love seeing the factory tour esp the old machines I can only imagine the smell of oil like an engineering company. What a great team that showed you around and sounds like they showed you a lot ( probably more then other companies would of )

Tristano, you have outdone yourself! It was so overwhelmingly heartwarming to see the utter appreciation that Hanhart has for you! It made me overjoyed to see how visibly happy they were to have you there and show you all about their amazing company. Your humility and to see the way that you were touched by their kindness and joy of having you there was so visceral….. my whole family could see how important a moment this trip was for you. Extremely grateful you shared it with all of us.
I learned so much about Hanhart and their history as a brand. I am supposed to be coming to the end of filling my watch box. Videos like this make that extraordinarily difficult.
What an outstanding piece of work. Speechless. Absolutely bees knees, completely over the moon, chuffed. Stupendously well done.
Thank you, my friend. Onward and upward!

What a great video and I am so glad you made it to Germany! I spent 3 years there (in Bavaria) and it brought back some great memories and I loved the factory tour, what a great set-up they have. The CNC machines at my work are much larger so really enjoyed seeing theirs in the process, and the amount of pride in the product :) I hope you make it to Japan soon!

TGV, This type of high quality content is something that is more than a showcase of the absolutely amazing craftsmen/women bringing some of our favorite "things" to life. You also were able to bring out history and humanity in a wonderful presentation. Thank you for sharing your passions with the rest of us, and exposing me to underrepresented brands, that are true icons of the art and precision of mechanical watches! Cheers!
