Very interesting and well made - as ususal! Cheers! I found it curious (hope my speakers brought that across accurately) that the chimier/more open sound of the Savage for cleans turned into a bit of harshness for the crunch sounds and then again into a bit more clarity for the lead sounds. Your final thoughts however left me with the impression that the differences might not be as pronounced in the room as they seem to come across here. Looking forward to the next parts!
Thank you! Always appreciate your input! I agree with you! The differences to me were much more noticeable in the playback than when I was actually playing.
@@TheOtherJohnBrowne Thanks! always good to have an idea how YT compares to the sound in the room (that new amp still eludes me though - especially after hearing the sounds around 10:07 ;) )
I hope you put the Retro Tube up against the Inferno. I have an Inferno & the Retro Tube has always interested me. They have Identical control layouts. My Inferno sounds very similar to the Retro Tube in your video, but maybe with a hint more compression. Excellent comparison video by the way.
Thank you very much! I'd love to compare it to an Inferno. Tragically I don't have one (yet). If I had, it would probably have been first in line before the Savage. Yeah, the Retro Tube is capable of producing some super aggressive tones which surprises a lot of people. People seem to think it's a vintage Marshall inspired amp due to its name and visuals but it is a wolf in sheeps clothing
I preferred the rt50 until the savage lead channel kicked in. Then loved the rt 50 with the GB + boost. There was a thickness to the rt that I loved. Then again, I prefer stoner rock/metal these days. But I do love the grind on the Savage for the modern High Gain stuff. I'll need to watch this series a fair bit. As there's an RT100 for sale in my area.
They feel very similar in that regard to me. The Savage feels a tiny bit faster than the Retro Tube but it is one of the most direct amps I have played

Cheers! Thanks for the feedback! I appreciate it! I had not considered that because there are quite a few Savage videos out there. Have you seen Kyle Bulls video? He presents it very well imo. That being said, I'm open to the idea if I can bring something new to the table. Is there something particular you are looking for in a Savage video?
The Savage sounds, well, more Savage. But the Retrotube does sound great. A little more tame in the attack, but there's plenty of saturation there to play any kind of Metal for sure, and it still sounds very tight, especially boosted. It has a more meaty midrange so to speak, while the Savage has more bark. I just can't get over how small Engl transformers always seem to be (especially the output transformers), considering these are 100/120 watt high gain monsters. Size does matter when it comes to big iron!
I know, right? I am glad somebody noticed. Even though the OT is recessed into the body it seems positively tiny. Especially compared to the transformers in my Diezels that are the size of a childs head. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment! I appreciate your take!
@@TheOtherJohnBrowne yeah man. I see a lot of Marshall amps with them too. They just seem tiny compared to what other brands like Mesa, EVH, Peavey, hell even Bugera put in their amps. And I do think this makes a difference, especially as your increase the volume of the amp. My Engl Blackmore, for instance, it sounded awesome at lower to medium volume levels, but in a band context it was very hard to be heard without it sounding hollow and harsh.. It did record beautifully at home volume, though. My other amp, a Peavey 6505, doesn't give that instant recording tone at lower volumes, but it eats the Engl alive in a band setting.. And I think the OTs might just have something to do with it.

Thank You so much for making this video! Much appreciation, loved this detailed comparison.
Love how in depth these comparisons are. Amazing man!
Thank you! I appreciate the comment!
what a great video! 2 of the best amps ever right here imo, hard to decide between them!
Thanks, mate! Glad you liked it!

The ENGL Savage is without a doubt one of the best guitar amps in the world.

Does the retro tube have the same fast tracking dynamically as the savage?
