Super cool video Dan! On my gun I’ve got the spear connected to my gun so if the fish isn’t stoned it can’t run off with my spear. How do you ensure that doesn’t happen since it doesn’t look like you’re connected to your spears at all?
Thanks Paul. With free shafting, it's all about shot placement, the whole idea is to "stone" the fish and if you fail to do that, to hit the fish so hard that it limits their ability to flee. Then a double tap from spear #2 will end it quickly. It def isn't practical to free shaft in some ares but where it works, it works well. Best, Dan

No sabes nada de pesca, This guy doesn’t even know English , and he’s talking shit.
Hey Andrew, it really comes down to experience, knowing when to take the shot and when not to. In case I don't stone a fish, I try to hit it hard enough to grab the spear or to shoot it again. In situations where the visibility is good and there aren't deep holes or wreckage for it to swim out of reach into, you can hit it hard and follow until the opportunity to double tap it happens. It's a learning curve, like everything else. Best. Dan
Hey Dan! Your spear fishing is great. I am going down to Crystal river after thanksgiving to go to the middle grounds to spearfish. Wondering if you may want to go? I have a 42’ Freeman. Anyways I want to learn how to dive deep. 188 is as deep as I’ve ever been. Do you do any training?
Hey Dee, sorry for late response, with the recent two Hurricanes, I left the state for a few weeks. I appreciate the offer, man that's tempting to go out on a 42' Freeman. I'm not an Instructor but it shouldn't be too hard to find a good extended range or TX instructor. Try calling one of the dive shops in your area, they'll probably be able to suggest someone. If that doesn't work, call one of the tech training agencies, TDI, etc, I'm sure they could help. Hold onto that open spot for me, when I retire form commercial spearing in a few years, I'd love to go. Best, Dan
B31, with the right equipment and multiple blow off mixes, a very rough estimate in that depth is about 3 minutes of Deco for every minute of bottom time. This could vary significantly due to many variables. This should never be attempted without years of experience and proper training. Thanks for watching. Best, Dan

From UA-cam, I beg you to ban these videos, because they are doing Apologia for something that detracts from a sport that requires as much effort as Spearfishing.
Jordi, so we should be in jail for legally commercially spearfishing? Not too biased there are you? Or too strongly opinionated about what you probably know very little or nothing about? If you thing technical spearfishing in 50-100 meters is easy or that we "indiscriminately" kill, then you're not just wrong, you're really wrong. Good luck to you with your spearfishing. Best, Dan

La verdad para las personas que practicamos este tipo de actividades no le vemos la gracia a lo que tú haces, siendo prohibida este tipo de pesca, si lo hicieces a pulmón te haría alguna reberencia,,,
Two questions, are you shooting an ocean rhino? If not what brand gun your running? And secondly, where in the hell can I get a stringer that big??? Great videos and congrats on the PB, looks like your friend was good luck!
Hey Erik, no, it's a home made gun we make ourselves. I buy 6' heat treated blanks and then make the stringers in my shop. I think Rich at Speargods sells a similar product. Give him a shout at 727-432-1967 and I'm sure he'll steer you in the right direction! Best, Dan
I71, yes, my main flashlight had taken a crap and I clipped on a spare one which wasn't sound treated, it was a bare metal clip on a SS D ring and clattered the whole dive. Always worth the time to tighten up all of your gear to the best it can be. Will greatly improve your chances when the fish of a lifetime shows up! Best, Dan
Dude you are fucking brave! I spearfish all the time and it takes balls , I dive 50-60 feet ,,,, and I look up and I honestly get worried sometimes, sometimes sharks come by and get frisky , these people don’t know what the fuck it takes to get in that water and hunt a fish like a real man, not with a button on a boat! Fucking people have no respect bro. They think it’s easy lmao 😂 wish I could see em out there in a bad storm or under water with some sharks 🦈 that would be a site to see! Love your videos bro! People do not appreciate how proficient you are in this , I have been spearfishing for the last 35 years and I know how dangerous it can be especially with scuba and especially if there is making ur bread involved... Do you breathe trimix down there? You dive twinsets but I don't see any deco mix cylinders on yous. I wish you come back safe every time brother.
Thanks Dimitris, appreciate your thoughts and comments. Yes, main mix is a light Trimix with two stage bottles for deco. Thanks you for the well wishes and I wish you the best also. Dan
Dan, well done and congrats to you for that beast! I appreciate a good debate and opposite opinions, but personal attacks are unacceptable. Let me set the record straight for all the people who argue that spearing on scuba is some how unethical. First I'm a scuba diver, practicing free diver and avid spearo. It's actually more difficult to spearfish on scuba because of the noise it makes underwater, it takes patience and practice just like free-diving. Plus, if you watch some of the "free" diving spearfishing videos throughout YT you will notice that there is normally a large gang floating on the surface dropping on spot and removing ALL life from the reef. You will also notice that there are sometime multiple people taking shots at one fish while attempting to land it. The gangs protect each other from sharks as well, doesn't that take a way from the fish's "sporting chance"? You will also notice that there are a lot of under size fish taking in a lot of YT spearfishing videos. Where is your outrage for that? Does that give the fish a sporting chance? What Dan is doing is perfectly legit and legal and as he has said and I fully agree with, you're speak to something which you know nothing about. This is only meant for those making personal attacks. I respect those who have made respectful opposing statements.
Thanks for the well thought out comment SPB. I appreciate it. Most of these guys are pretty good people and are open to listening and considering different ways of doing things. Others, not so much. There's always going to be haters I guess. Thanks again for what you said. Best, Dan
You guys are all unethical kooks who can’t take a shot at a fish with one breath. Too difficult for you. Don’t say anything about scuba spearing to be difficult. How can you even say that? Clearly in this video the fish weren’t afraid at all and it made it a billion times easier to just shoot whatever he wanted. Difficult, get your head out of your ass
If its harder to spearfish on Scuba then why can't you claim state and world records on scuba? In my personal opinion if you are diving with breathing aid then its not spearfishing or an achievement in shooting certain fish. People say it makes a noise but you can still hold your breath on scuba to get close to a fish when you need to. But what I do not agree with is people saying it is unethical, it still more sustainable than another form of fishing other than spearfishing on one breath of air and it is still selective haversting. Whereas all other forms of fishing is not.
@@plankalicious I believe that "most" people who spearfish on scuba are not interested in contest and records. Only interested in putting some fish on the table. Also, number one rule about scuba diving is that you NEVER hold your breath. I have no problem with either method. I've talked to people that freedive and scuba and everyone agrees with what you said, either way is more sustainable than most other fishing methods. Plus it seems that most people don't care which method you use, but there are always people who love to argue and judge other people.
Hey Juan, total gun length is about 54" and I use a 60" shaft. I use a single 5/8" band, about 25" long. We only use 7.5mm diameter shafts, I don't like the 5/16" (8mm)stuff The biggest thing is to keep your spear very very sharp and to only use shafts with a "wrap around" flopper design (like RA shafts). If your flopper has significantly wider ears, they will have to tear a much larger hole that the narrower spear preceding them. This will almost stop penetration or significantly impede it. I ordered a Tripod and will try and do a few "how to" videos in the near future. Best, Dan
246, not really. For me and most of the guys, the hardest equalization has always been in 10'-30' on the way down where the pressure % changes the fastest. Usually, if you're good to go up there, the deeper ones are easier. Best, Dan
Captain Tom. I wonder how any man can just be so darn ignorant to lay shade on something they know nothing about? There's always going to be haters. No big deal. Guys like you make it all worth while. Best, Dan
Hey JJ, it's a home made gun we make ourselves. Roughly based on an older Sea Hornet but utilizing better quality parts with tighter tolerances. Best, Dan
Rock, every minute of bottom time requires roughly an additional 4 minutes of high O2 Deco. On an open Ocean dive like this, you can't depend on boat/surface Deco gas, so everything has to be carried by the divers. You should also each carry enough Deco gas to supply your buddy with in case of an emergency. This limits your bottom time to just a few minutes, unless you want to carry huge tanks and pay a long long deco time penalty. That's the short answer! Best, Dan
Good god what a shot! What a feeling of relief when he roller over! And I loved the double tap!

Been enjoying this one on Moose's channel for a few years. Badass
Thanks Tom!
Did not know Blacks got that big! That is a sick fish and that kitty Mitchel was a beast also!
MH, thanks! I think I've seen two over my life that might have been bigger, but no shot possible. Appreciate you watching. Best, Dan
@@danmacmahon3973 this one NEVER gets old! Beast fish
Best, Dan
Well done sir. Thats a big feesh!

MS, appreciate you watching. Best to you however you choose to spear fish. Dan
No sabes nada de pesca,
This guy doesn’t even know English , and he’s talking shit.
How do the non stoned shot fish not swim of with the spear if there is no line attached?
Hey Andrew, it really comes down to experience, knowing when to take the shot and when not to. In case I don't stone a fish, I try to hit it hard enough to grab the spear or to shoot it again. In situations where the visibility is good and there aren't deep holes or wreckage for it to swim out of reach into, you can hit it hard and follow until the opportunity to double tap it happens. It's a learning curve, like everything else. Best. Dan
Nice, lots of fish to choose from at that depth and location. You seem to get a lot of $hit in the comments, keep up the vids!🙂👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
NB, thanks. Yeah a few people always have something crappy to say. Just comes with it. Thanks for watching, appreciate it! Best, Dan
Wow big fish, l like that shot
Best, Dan
As I fall to my knees and bow!!!
CM, lol, thanks! It was a special fish and a very special day! Best, Dan
240'? Holy cow! Really? What Kind of time to have down there with the mixed gases?
B31, with the right equipment and multiple blow off mixes, a very rough estimate in that depth is about 3 minutes of Deco for every minute of bottom time. This could vary significantly due to many variables. This should never be attempted without years of experience and proper training. Thanks for watching. Best, Dan

International law is not permitted to used scuba diving for spearfishing
International law does no work here because the US and many other countries does not follow your so called law
There's no such law...that's not correct.
Dan MacMahon let me put it another way the law is not followed in the US and is ignored.
Personally I rather hunt with scuba gear.

All these guys should be in jail, what a way to kill indiscriminately using air bottles. I am an Underwater Fisherman and my descent limit is about 20m. - 25m. and many times I have escaped prey for being below my limit.
Sirs.
Best, Dan

Awesome dive and fish. I’ve never seen a black that big. How far out are you running in the gulf on these deeper dives 60-70 nM? Do y’all overnight for a few days?
Reading the comments from all the haters is actually quite amusing. Never would have thought this could be so controversial, but in this day and age it seems everything is.
Keep up the good work and posting videos. Thanks.
Thanks Paitent! Yes we go for multi day trips, between 2-5, I prefer 3. That Black came off a wreck about 120 miles out. Yeah, most of the people posting are cool and I enjoy their comments and am glad they're enjoying the videos. Of course, there's a few that use profanity and insults, but they're def not worth listening to or worrying about! Thanks for watching and I appreciate your comments! Best, Dan
Now we all know why there's no more big fish on the reefs and wrecks
W1987, that wrecks over 120 NM offshore, I doubt us spearing on it is affecting your local wrecks and reefs. Dan
Which country are you from mate?
They are from the USA , and are fishing in the Gulf of Mexico off the west coast of Florida .
La verdad para las personas que practicamos este tipo de actividades no le vemos la gracia a lo que tú haces, siendo prohibida este tipo de pesca, si lo hicieces a pulmón te haría alguna reberencia,,,
Wow. I've never seen anyone go 240' to spear fish. The deepest I've been is 160. Did you switch to enriched or straight O2 on your deco stop?
Shoulda certified scaled it! That was a world record black
Best, Dan

how much did that fish net you $
He gets normally between $5 and $6 a pound for grouper . So between $670 and $800 , or so . Nice days work , for sure .
@Dan Do you know what that chattering noise was when you were down on the wreck? It came across as pretty loud on the camera.
Best, Dan
This is not a spearfishing. This is a crime

Thanks Juan, I hear you and appreciate your comments. There's def nothing easy about this gig. Like my dad used to say "if it was easy, everybody would be doing it". I do truly enjoy doing it and am glad people (most) are enjoying the videos. Best, Dan
Your friend only has a small 3 lit mounted if I am not mistaken on the left pole.
@@mattrobles6312 You're an angry elf. Do you get nose bleeds up there?
@@plankalicious I believe that "most" people who spearfish on scuba are not interested in contest and records. Only interested in putting some fish on the table. Also, number one rule about scuba diving is that you NEVER hold your breath. I have no problem with either method. I've talked to people that freedive and scuba and everyone agrees with what you said, either way is more sustainable than most other fishing methods. Plus it seems that most people don't care which method you use, but there are always people who love to argue and judge other people.
What size gun are you using dan that gives you so much power to stone majority of your giant groupers.
Best, Dan
@@danmacmahon3973 great i really appreciate the information. Yes the how to videos would be very helpful. Thank you I can't wait .

Is it hard to equalize at that depth?
246, not really. For me and most of the guys, the hardest equalization has always been in 10'-30' on the way down where the pressure % changes the fastest. Usually, if you're good to go up there, the deeper ones are easier. Best, Dan

Hey JJ, it's a home made gun we make ourselves. Roughly based on an older Sea Hornet but utilizing better quality parts with tighter tolerances. Best, Dan
7:00 am sorry what did you say?
Why the hurry to leave?
Rock, every minute of bottom time requires roughly an additional 4 minutes of high O2 Deco. On an open Ocean dive like this, you can't depend on boat/surface Deco gas, so everything has to be carried by the divers. You should also each carry enough Deco gas to supply your buddy with in case of an emergency. This limits your bottom time to just a few minutes, unless you want to carry huge tanks and pay a long long deco time penalty. That's the short answer! Best, Dan
That’s awesome!!!
Thanks Brian, it was a very special dive! Best, Dan
