Gents, My Grandad owned a sawmill in SE Arkansas in the 1950’s through the 70’s. He cut Hickory, Tupelo Gum and Lemonwood from the lands owned/leased by the paper mill companies in the area. They wanted the hardwoods cleared out so the pines would grow. His crews cut the logs into “billits” then they went to his mill. They made “squares” 5 x5 tapering to 4 x 4 and “48 to 52” long. These would be shipped to several different finishing mills where they were made into Pick Axe, Maddox and regular Axe handles. I worked for him in the summer for a few years. My job was to dip each in into melted wax before the squares were stacked to air dry. This kept them from splitting. Some of the Hickory and the Gum & Lemon wood was cut and sent to the Ben Pearson Bow company in Pine Bluff AR to be made into laminated long bows. I enjoy your show. Brings back some great memories. P.S. I have several of his large files that he used to sharpen the saw blades, which was done by straddling the table and filing each saw by hand. The blades were about the same size as yours.
