I find it very strangely entertaining how their live material walked a tightrope during this era, playing their glammy stuff heavier, and their classic thrash and proto-black/death metal stuff with more arena rock melody.

I will admit when i first heard cold lake it caught me off guard but when you actually listen to it the songs are still heavy . And it just another tom g warrior experiment. I appreciate musicians trying new things from the sake of creativity. And usually it works cause they still use their standards to judge it. Hello my friends from Russia. Nice to see you here listening to some great tunes. Greetings from the arid outbck of Australia... 7 Continents - 1 Family - Metal!!!
I myself am a very fond fan of Celtic Frost, and I can proudly say I appreciate Cold Lake as much as any other CF album. I think the problem is all these people who compare it to Celtic Frost's other stuff and disapprove because of the fact that it's a sellout. If you look at it in the form of a glam album instead of that one thrash band that went glam, it really is a good album with some great riffs. Good on you for putting this vid up, and shame on those trolling it for no good reason.
I discovered this album through many podcasts and meme groups who seem to solely focus on the first couple minutes and then turn it off. I noticed the more I listened to cold lake, the more I forgot about the nonsense from those first 2 mins. I see it a black metal band being asked to write a hit record, and they wrote a hit record from the perspective of a black metal band. It's still shitty, the vocals still suck, the riffs are cool, and it's just a fucking fun record. I've heard really bad metal sell out records, and this isn't a sell out. It's more of a middle finger to the people who asked for a hit record.
Into the Pandemonium is my favorite album by CF.I Won't Dance is a Bad Ass song .It embodies the fusion of Black, speed metal with commercial metal which is why I think it's awesome. I have heard Cold Lake and Vanity something I can't remember the name. It's funny CF started out heavy went commercial and went back to heavy. Pantera first 2 albums they had a commercial image and they went heavy and dressed more like Metallica for the Cowboys from Hell album.
man i must be one of handful of metalheads that love this album ....its packed full of great memorable riffs and great solos that you can't deny....the obscure yet meaningful lyrics of Warrior .....i love it ...and the haters can suffer
Cold Lake was the first Frost I heard and I liked it, and I do still enjoy it every once in a while as a guilty pleasure. After getting Cold Lake, then I got Morbid Tales, To Mega Therion and Pandemonium and Cold Lake is my least favorite.
It was a clever idea. I think the concept was to prove that people are influenced dramatically by image, rather than content. When you listen to the songs on Cold Lake, they aren't that bad. The production is lightweight (indeed on th re-recorded versions on parched you can see how the songs improve with the heavier production). Indeed the songs stand up next to Vanity/Nemesis, which was just a heavier version of Cold Lake in many ways. people dismissed this on just the image. shame
yours is a very poetic take on it, but untrue. Tom just wanted a change, it wasn't a deep statement or "clever idea". it was just what he chose to wear and look like, and liked it at the time, all the way through Vanity /Nemesis.
Whether Tom wanted or was pushed to change direction it should never have been called Celtic Frost. When I first saw the album cover I nearly didn’t by it based on that cover photo. But Sorry re-recorded songs or not Cold Lake is dreadful and I listen to everything from ABBA to Zappa
it wasnt a concept or any “idea.” it was Tom Warrior being happy and having a pretty big budget for once so he hoped to somewhat ride off the glam wave
Those were the most fun to be at, when there was'nt alot of people around. I remember being like only 15 feet away from the stage Celtic Frost was on, sitting high up on those tall amplifyer things. Jenny and I. That's where we always sat at the shows!⚡🙋
These eyes Tom sends Oliver, and the "little confused boy" face Oliver put up with as if he would say "Did I do something wrong" says everything about the band's mood during the concert.
I was at this gig, There was less than 100 people there, Really poor turn out considering they had Destruction supporting. That is why there are no real crowd shots.
somewhatty ... Saw Frost on previous tour with Kreator and Virus. One of best gigs ever. No wonder Martin Ain’t (RIP) did one and stayed at home laughing

I had chance to hear Oliver Amberg's new band, after being booted from Frost. He really wasn't a bad song writer. He was just a severe substance abuser hyped up on cocaine and speed pills all the time. Last I saw of him, he was doing graphics work. His portfolio is awesome.

im addicted to this album, i love listening to they were eagles while in the car on the Highway. i have a 2 disc collection of songs with older celtic frost hits and only 4 songs from cold lake, they were eagles, cherry orchards, blood on kisses, and downtown hanoi, all of them rock, but i want to get the actual album so i can enjoy all of cold lakes songs. This album is better than any other glam album period.
I was at this show and it was amazing. There was a small knot of disgruntled “fans” who complained that the songs weren’t “fast enough”. And that is the level of moron who dislikes this album, which is as inventive and creative ‘Into the Pandemonium’ because Celtic Frost never travelled with the herd. Anyway, I was so impressed I went to see them a second time in Manchester, and that show was even better. Great band. Great album. Great tour. I don’t care that Tom wants to rewrite/erase history.
No, this was their glam period, certainly didn't originally listen to them to hear this stuff. So you can defend this era, however most of will just laugh at you more...
Probably right. It's so weird seeing Tom all teased up like that. I got to see them live back in 2006, and what a cool guy. They sounded amazing. I was actually shocked at how good they sounded. One of the better shows I've seen. And after I got to meet him, he went to the back of the club and just bullshitted with us. It was real cool. Really nice guy.
I think it was an interesting take on how fickle metal fans were becoming and the impact of image. The Cold Lake production wasn't great, but as you say the tracks were solid. The main change was in the image and some people couldn't get over that... same band, playing an evolved version of their music, but they couldn't get past the image.
As the uploader i agree with the comments that Cold Lake is a poor album compared to Morbid Tales but then most albums by most metal bands are poor compared to Morbid Tales !! remember you can choose not to watch and i sincerely wish i had a full show from the Morbid Tales era but i don't
MarsHottentot yeah it was pretty awful. A lot of middle fingers going up to Tom. I think a lot of people went just to throw hatred. Like I said in one of my comments about this, it was hard to watch, Tom looked lost and frequently like I’m trying here but even I’ve no idea what I’m doing... ah well. Still doesn’t take away from those first three albums. What a band they were.
Where was it ?I had a ticket to see them in 1989 and DIDINT GO .I just DIDINT show up and let my 2 friends go together.CRONOS OPENED UP IN .N.Y.N.Y.CRONOS GOT GOOD RECEPTION BUT FROST HAD TO STOP EARLY BECAUSE PEOPLE STARTED THROWING GARBADGE ON STAGE.WAS IT THE SHOW I DISSED.My friends told me it sucked.
saw them in 1986 in london and 1987 in birmingham (which i have a soundboard cassette of)and they were great awesome but yeah the hair well what can you say still class toons
I vomited in my mouth when i heard him sing into the crypt of rays... so cherry orchards style. its a shame that the big awesome pro shot footage we have is the cold lake tour :(
The little speech in 29:36-54 says it all. He had tasted the good things in life, as he has also said in interview. Not so angry anymore. Narrowminded dark minds couldn't accept this wonderful new path in the band's development. The heartbreaking lesson he drew from the failure was that he is best at making music when he is depressed. So sad, he could have become a much more accomplished person and artist had he continued the Cold Lake path, just bringing it to a more mature audience in another name perhaps, and getting a better singer lol.
I really do see your point but Cold Lake came out at such an odd time. It seemed to me Tom was aping someone else's vision. Hair metal was selling records & making money. When I picked up Cold Lake my heart sank. It seemed like Tom was making an obvious grab for cash. Changing the name was a good idea Morbid Tales/To Megatherion Frost was a total different band than Cold Lake CF. One more thing - hair metal fans aren't really known for their level of maturity & the Cold Lake look SCREAMS hair metal.
j bjerregaard I cant agree more, but being the die hard Celtic myself, i would agree if they did a few more after Cold lake and Vanity before deviating again into avant gardeness...regardless, Frost is LEGENDARY
If you watch the documentary that is here on youtube he said he was super in love with his girlfriend. Hence the Michelle all over one of his guitars in this video. He said he was so blinded by love the music went in the shitter. Now he is back to his grumpy ass self. Lol.
I was at this gig. We got tickets before Cold Lake was released, and because Destruction were supporting. I have never seen Hammy O so empty. It was an absolute disaster. Just look at 'em! Tragic!! Even me and my fellow 16 year olds bailed after 2 songs. Destruction weren't bad though. At least Tom G came to realise his error.
"The Usurper" followed by "Seduce me Tonight"...hilarious! What the hell was Tom thinking? Still a big surprise that he has any career left in the darker genres at all!
If you don't ever diverge, try new things, and fail then you aren't a real artist. This honestly makes me respect him more because he diverged from the formula that gave initial success.

It was my first meeting on Hard Metal ! Long live in the Metal music.
i was at this gig and met the band and had a beer with them after the gig nice blokes
Can't help but crack up when i hear this version of Juices like wine. The way Tom says wine 😄
Yeh but the riffs slay
im addicted to this album, i love listening to they were eagles while in the car on the Highway. i have a 2 disc collection of songs with older celtic frost hits and only 4 songs from cold lake, they were eagles, cherry orchards, blood on kisses, and downtown hanoi, all of them rock, but i want to get the actual album so i can enjoy all of cold lakes songs. This album is better than any other glam album period.
Demos rock
🙋⚡
@MetalAttack1986 What? Dude this is awesome. The old songs with the Cold Lake vocals are just pure awesomeness.
🙋⚡
The intro on Once They were eagle is just pure speed metal.
Rocks!!!
🙋⚡
old classic metal band . great !!!
Not to mention this is the worst line up...

This is more like Twisted Sister, my god... nothing left from the mighty Celtic Frost I used to adore...
This is thrash dude. And early Twisted Sister kicks ass but this even at its softest is way heavier than anything TS did.
@@rufussamsquanch_6547 I dunno...Under The Blade is a pretty fucking heavy song.
Juices like wine ripps!awesome guitar riff
its the only one i remotely like from CL
I used to know this band.
🙋
I was there that Friday night.
Destruction were in support.
I think it was an interesting take on how fickle metal fans were becoming and the impact of image. The Cold Lake production wasn't great, but as you say the tracks were solid. The main change was in the image and some people couldn't get over that... same band, playing an evolved version of their music, but they couldn't get past the image.
The lyrics were terrible, with better lyrics and more doomy elements - and of course lose that sleeve photo! - it could have been a good album.
Tom’s face during the intro to Seduce Me tonight speaks for its self haha. He didn’t seem happy at it
🙋💋
Is that Jodie Froster?
I love the Glam Metal look...it suits them! Nothing wrong with looking good and playing great! \m/
🙋✨
i cant stop watching this amazing shit! hail fuckin celtic frost!
Man Downtown Hanoi is an absolute pleasure to the ear
Rocks
Glad I got to see MegaTherion tour. Was a great show!!! This isn't up to par with what I seen. Very thankful for Tom G.! Pioneer 🤘
Sound be like, little bit of some other stuff and then SNARE!!!!
I'd enjoy heating the cold lake tracks performed by tryptikon. Just to get the right vibe.
you will never hear that
Remember Celtic Frost playing Hammersmith Palais. Grave Digger in support. Now that show was something to remember. This show is the one to forget.
i now have to watch the LIVE AT WACKEN concert 2006 concert just to get this out of my heat...aaauuggghhh
As the uploader i agree with the comments that Cold Lake is a poor album compared to Morbid Tales but then most albums by most metal bands are poor compared to Morbid Tales !! remember you can choose not to watch and i sincerely wish i had a full show from the Morbid Tales era but i don't
I was THERE!!!! It was painful. And I was such a HUGE fan too.
I know this is a late question but: Was most of the audience as bewildered by glam Celtic Frost as it seems on the video?
That's true, I was the pain!!
Actually I was the drumstick
A very dark period in the history of Celtic Frost for sure
even tho cold lake is completely different, its still badass, for me its more Heavy metal than Glam
This is absolutely great.
Oooh!
That's great!! That's all there is to it!!
saw them in 1986 in london and 1987 in birmingham (which i have a soundboard cassette of)and they were great awesome but yeah the hair well what can you say still class toons
SUPER LEGEND!!!!! LOVE!!!!! V
🙋
@@kristyndodge9238 Super!! Thank You!!!
I vomited in my mouth when i heard him sing into the crypt of rays... so cherry orchards style. its a shame that the big awesome pro shot footage we have is the cold lake tour :(
Great band!!!
I have an ESP tone on my Fender Telecaster,I have many different guitar tones and effects,it sounds amazing!
Love Celtic Frost. love Tom G and everything he does! \m/ \m/
So do I, think this shit rules
Its really pretty Fucking Awesome
Lol.
ah but what a laugh ive just had watching that 1st solo hahahahaha hilarious
I was at this gig. We got tickets before Cold Lake was released, and because Destruction were supporting. I have never seen Hammy O so empty. It was an absolute disaster. Just look at 'em! Tragic!! Even me and my fellow 16 year olds bailed after 2 songs. Destruction weren't bad though. At least Tom G came to realise his error.
mesmerazing guitar solos! lol
🙋
You are witnessing the birth of Celtic Frost Mark 2. Hope you enjoy our new direction. On the bass, Derek Smalls! He wrote this!
Tom had a gf who like this image and style of music, that's why they changed their image
This looks like it would have been a good show man . They sound great live
🙋I saw them live a bunch🎉
you can say what you want but Frost did it their way, and Cold Lake is a classic on its own.
"The Usurper" followed by "Seduce me Tonight"...hilarious!
What the hell was Tom thinking? Still a big surprise that he has any career left in the darker genres at all!
Cold Lake was fail but Tom know it and trying to repair that :d
Yeah, that's why Triptykon is the most crushing shit ever released.
If you don't ever diverge, try new things, and fail then you aren't a real artist. This honestly makes me respect him more because he diverged from the formula that gave initial success.
I don't think I have ever seen less effort put into making a Eddie replica guitar til now. 😉
2:50 does this guy even know wtf he’s doing? Lmfaoooo it sounds like guitar center 😂
Haters gonna hate , but Cold Lake is totally underrated)
