I never realized he felt this way toward River Phoenix, but yeah, it makes total sense since his mom stopped him from acting for the next four years. Such a shame he wasn't in another good movie with River, in the early 90s.
It's okay Ethan. Every actor of that generation was jealous and envious of River because he was the best. It doesn't mean they also didn't love him as well. Kudos for admitting that.
@@andrewsindler5867 It's the same definition of best as listed in websters. Subjective of course but I feel he was, and most of his peers did as well. Although I'm venturing an educated guess that you disagree
Wow. What an honest and profound conversation and insight from Ethan Hawke. I admire him for really being introspective and remaining so grounded. River was not a threat. He was a talent to be admired. Great evil has been committed by humanity due to jealousy. Sometimes I wonder if jealousy (from others) brought River to his early demise.
Infelizmente River era muito invejado também lindo talentoso exclusivo brilhante intelectual um homem extraordinários como River difícil viu, as pessoas são substituíveis mas ta difícil substituir o River na minha opinião nunca será.😢
Commenting on the war movie Once upon a midnight clear, “I’m sure Keith Gordon (director) wished he could have gotten River Phoneix, but the movie didn’t have any money, so I got the part.” I find his candor refreshing.
River was beautiful, unselfish, truly wanted to make this world better. So sad that evil, jealous chili peppers and Johnny Depp ruined it for all of us, got away with murder. I think Ethan made veiled comments addressing this and God bless him for it. River was so inspiring to the audiences. He was a credit to my generation dammit, and to all the generations.
Life has a way of making you just want to be loved. At the end of the day, I just want to be close to people I love and get loved back and be happy... I failed miserably. Now I'm just here.. a shell of a man.

Depends on your definition of best.

Ethan is the kind of actor that River would've become.
River would be better! No offence, I like Ethan :)
Jealousy's a waste of time. River God bless.
So spot on!
That was cool, honest and sincere.
Yes. I have an even greater respect for Ethan now.
I can't keep my eyes off that comfy-looking chair. So envious.

Wait what??
@@hofhofandaway The Viper Room at the time was owned by Johnny Depp.
The whole Johnny Depp thing is myth. I am a River guy, and I love him to death, but his death is his fault, and his fault alone.
John for sure was involved. (The guitarist)
@@riverx6802 exactly!!! He gave that fucking drink with drug to River!!!
I love this interview ❤
