Have you noticed just how DAMN good Twin Peaks Season 3 looks, even in 1080P? Pure digital, baby!
He says like it is. I respect his practicality and the fact that digital is simply way better on many fronts. Some filmmakers love film out of pretentiousness. I’d love to see those filmmakers use analog tape for their audio as well.
Imagine asking him if stuff he did had any value :o
I love this guy! 😅
"WHERE IS THE WILL THERE IS A WAY" - I love it!
His points are valid but when digital first came out the quality is locked in at e.g. 480p. A film made in the early 20th century can be rendered in 4k.
Talk about the right pick!
As someone who records a ton of his music on tape and reels this couldn’t be more wrong as far as audio. Walmart carries vinyl and they even had strangers things soundtrack on tape 😂
Kubrick saved money by having no film in the camera for the first 20 takes.
Capitalism limits art in the most terrible way. Artists should be able to create freely
Yes, unfortunately a lot of bs and prejudices in Art world, thanks God there are people like David Lynch who brings inspiration & the light to things that really matter 🤍🤍🤍
It sounds like he's talking about projection in this clip, not capture. Those are different things. You can make a movie digitally and print it on celluloid, and you can shoot a movie on film and distribute it on hard drives.
I liked the film because it was such a simple tale lynch added a ton of empathy to. It seems these days in cinema you have to just add artificially to the stakes but it ends up making the story seem small. The story is a race against the clock to try and repair a relationship before time is up.
Thank You Mr. Lynch
Thank you for everything Mr. Lynch. RIP
Not surprised at all that a creative powerhouse would prefer the method that allows more people to be more creative
Personally i love film in every aspect. but i respect his opinion
I love Lynch but in my opinion both film and digital have their uses. Digital can become corrupted. Ancient and damaged films have been found and resurrected because an an archival format it lasts for decades whereas digital can become corrupt. I think we're at a stage today where both film and digital can work together beautifully. it is down to what you want to achieve in each project
Wait she's 90 IN THIS!?!?
People ask this man the most ridiculous questions. They all want hype and drama and tricks and categories, but it's completely beside the point. I would rather ask Lynch about one thing from his week that he found interesting, and wouldn't matter if it was the way his salad for lunch looked. Trying to treat a surrealist like a businessman or a talk show host is crazy...
Yeah, he's wrong.
Man, I've never met you, but man I miss you.
Thanks. You seem a good and honest man.
Rip my guy. Love hearing him talk
Great career advice.
Because of convenience, not quality
Amen.
He’s right about titles. One person has many things within them. We all do. And you go where the inspiration takes you. I’ve been a musician for over half my life at this point. And I’m not sure if I’m done. What next? Maybe a carpenter, a lover, a father, or perhaps a writer, or even a mechanic. These are all things that call to me these days. It takes incredible courage to begin again.
I do believe it is possible to create the same filmic look and feel on digital video, it's just that the way they're shooting it now, the scene lighting and the colour grading especially is making it look horrible to me. Off the top of my head, an example of digital video done right might be the first couple of seasons of Better Call Saul. To me the colours look nice and natural. Also I'm going to say David Lynch is wrong because modern telecine machines will scan it in to digital and you'll have a perfect digital master copy to work with and colour grade just like you would digital. The only downside is it costs you a lot of money to reshoot a scene so everyone has to try super hard to get it right the first time. Some say this limitation is what raises the standard and decreases nitpicking like an artist who might ruin their creation by nitpicking and redoing every little thing until the purity of the original concept was lost. Edit: probably the cost of the film roll is less than having to pay all the actors and set crew to do the scene again so maybe that was less of an issue. The reason I like film is purely the look and feel of the way it reacts to light, in other words it's tonemapping. However as we are now seeing the backcatalogue of movies shot on film are being "remastered" (re colour graded) to make it look more similar to stuff shot on digital cameras, proving that film can in fact be ruined by colour grading. So film alone is not enough. It needs to be film + lighting + grading all coming together.
He just gave a big hint about spells in the end. Don't call yourself anything!
RIP David Lynch.
such a treasure to have all these catalogued to look back on now that he's passed - thank you for your work
THESE ARE GREAT QUESTIONS FINALLY
i can't believe hes gone man... first time a celebrity death actually hit me
I love David Lynch, but disagree with him here. Film has a timeless quality and there's beauty in its imperfections. Digital is too clean, it's a paint of artifice, too much polish and crispness over the reality that is capture on the lens.
I love that claim that he's not a "cinema romantic". Cinema is the art, not where the camera puts the footage! It's really cool to see a big filmmaker standing up for modern tech. It's incredible when you think what digital video has allowed us to do. Film has a look and quality that can't be truly replaced but newer formats open up more avenues to explore. It makes me think of how tape, as he mentions, has unique characteristics that digital can't match. There are fancy plugins to emulate the tape imperfections after all. But newer electronic music embraced the ability of computers entirely, and it created styles the analog instruments were too limited to really explore.
Based
Sorry, but the charm of film is infinitely better
The new lynch is me
It was my favourite film when I was a kid and still it is right now. For me, the best film ever made
Bc he likes the realistic and gritty look for his new stuff. Film will always be more beautiful.
Entertainment killed art. Let's bring it back to life.
One of the great achievements of Hollywood when Hollywood was hot putting out some really good product. And i'm so glad to hear Clint was so on the money. It's a wonderful movie
This is the first time that I have heard someone credit Gattaca for what is was - an historical epic - that was/is not given the true measure of its worth - BRILLIANT - matures with age like good wine
Not even mentioning the benefits in editing or production or distribution just "old, not easy to use, we did this already with audio" Now, if willing, you can store a high quality digital copy of UHD movie in less than 3 gigabytes. Actually possible to burn HD movies to a single layer DVD
I've never known Lynch had a giggly side to him.
Being precious about celluloid is the last refuge of mediocre directors and showboats.
Film way better
trying to do this now. it’s hard because we’re taught that if you’re not making money then it means you’re wasting time.
that should change gradually now that you see that making money IS wasting time
same. id like to make art like its just a necessary muscle i need to flex. i dont want to worry about money but i do want to worry about doing things that are different, which is maybe a good thing to have, but is also another soul killer that leaves me in the mud
He's a peculiar man with peculiar taste.
