This video shows how doctors use surgery to stop the symptoms of heartburn and GERD. Fundoplication is a surgical procedure to prevent a back flow of stomach contents into the esophagus. The esophagus is the tube connecting your mouth and stomach. The animation shows how the upper portion of the stomach is wrapped around the lower esophagus to strengthen the cardiac sphincter of the stomach, which helps prevent GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease, aka heartburn). Hiatal hernia repair is also depicted. This involves pulling a portion of the stomach that has protruded from the diaphragm back into place.

The decision to have this surgery was one of the best I ever made. I was sixteen when I spent a year suffering daily from chronic heartburn pain and a hiatus hernia. Shortly after my seventeenth birthday I decided I didn't want to live that kind of life anymore. I spend one day in the hospital, and nearly a year later I feel awesome. I would highly recommend this to anyone who finds that medication and diet changes are not enough. I eat whatever I want, whenever I want, and there's no more pain.

One of the best things I did to help reduce GERD was raise the upper body portion of my mattress on my bed. So my upper body is on a slight downward angle. This really helped stop the pressure on my esophagus and stop gastric reflux. Highly recommend trying this

I have suffered from GERD on and off since I was 2. Now being 18 it’s getting unbearable and I’m in pain most of the time and unfortunately I’ve become used to the pain. I’m on so many medications which don’t get me wrong they help a lot but it still flares up constantly. I’m always in bed bc it’s just to much to deal with the pain and get up and move around. My eating habits have become awful bc I’m so scared to eat bc any type of food hurts my stomach. Exercising and daily activities are a thing of the past bc it’s just to hard and I get so worn out so easily. I’m hoping to get this surgery done as it would change my life. When I found out about this surgery it brought tears to my eyes knowing that I don’t have to be in pain all the time and that it can be fixed!

I had the pediatric laparoscopic nissen fundoplication. I had been suffering from severe GERD for the past 2 years and it was unbearable. For those of you considering this surgery due to failed treatments, I strongly recommend it. The quality of life after the surgery is amazing. Do beware of pain after the surgery. I was in the hospital 2 days post op and had excruciating stomach pains. Make sure to take all the pain medicine you need so you can have some sort of relief. Aside from the pain, the diet afterwards sucked. Only liquids for 2 weeks after surgery, and then soft diet for 4-5 weeks. I am extremely satisfied with the results and glad to say that I no longer suffer from GERD after this surgery. :)

Had this fundoplication done in May 2018 to repair both hiatal hernia and GERD. I developed post-fundoplication dysphagia which made me lose weight as I could barely swallow any meal. After several esophageal dilations to fix the dysphagia failed, I went back to theater to have one of the tight wraps loosened on October 7th 2018.Ifeel better although I fear that due to the losening reflux may recur but so far so good.

Acid pooled in my left cheek and destroyed two molars completely. It got so bad I coughed all night and ate a bag of cough drops every day. Pantoprazole helped but I just had this surgery done. Night after the surgery I slept like a baby on my right side. Five days after surgery I felt completely normal except the gerd is gone.

A natural remedy for acid reflux is by eating red (delicious) apples. The more ripe the better. Make sure you remove the skin before eating. Apples are known to have alkaline effects which neutralizes acids. It worked for me and my family, friends and co-workers.

This will supply the tissues of the intestinal tract with vitamins & minerals that are necessary for proper wound healing & will naturally rebalance the ph in the stomach causing the reflux to subside.

    Heartburn and GERD surgery
(0:07) Your surgeon may perform a fundoplication to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease or to repair hernia. Digestion begins in the mouth as teeth break food into smaller pieces. Saliva releases digestive enzymes when food is swallowed it enters the esophagus a long muscular tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach for further digestion.Contractions called peristalsis push food down the esophagus. At the bottom of the esophagus food passes through a muscular valve called the lower esophageal sphincter or LES. And into the stomach the digestive juice is secreted by the stomach our highly acidic. When the stomach contracts to move the food into the intestine the LES closes tightly in order to prevent these acidic juices from moving back into the esophagus where it can cause damage.
(1:07) A breathing muscle called the diaphragm - separates the chest from the abdomen. To reach the stomach the esophagus passes through the diaphragm at a point called the hiatal ring. If you have gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD your LES does not close properly allowing acidic stomach contents to flow backward into your esophagus. If GERD is not treated it can lead to a variety of esophageal problems including ulcers, bleeding strictures or narrowings and Barrett's esophagus which is the abnormal growth of intestinal type cells in the esophagus - that can lead to cancer. If you have a hiatal hernia a portion of your stomach is protruding into your chest cavity through the opening in your diaphragm. A hiatal hernia can affect the LES and increase the risk and severity of GERD.
(2:07) To begin your procedure an IV line will be inserted into your arm to provide fluids and medication. A catheter may be placed into your bladder to drain urine. You will be given general anesthesia which will put you to sleep for the entire procedure. Once you're asleep a breathing tube will be inserted through your mouth and into your windpipe to help you breathe during the operation.
(2:33) One of two methods may be used for a fund application. In the traditional open procedure your surgeon will begin by making an 8-inch incision in the abdomen to expose the stomach and lower esophagus. After separating it from nearby structures your surgeon will wrap the fundus or upper part of the stomach around the lower esophagus and stitch it into place. This wrap acts as a belt which tightens and strengthens the LES. In the laparascoscopic procedure your surgeon will begin by making five small keyhole incisions. Each about 1/2 inch long in your abdomen.
(3:15) Through one incision your surgeon will insert the laparoscope which is a long thin tube equipped with a light and a camera. The camera sends images to a video screen for the surgeon to view. Gas will be pumped in to inflate your abdomen to enable the surgeon to see your internal organs more clearly. Through the other incisions your surgeon will use instruments to detach the fundus of your stomach from its surroundings wrap it around your lower esophagus and stitch it into place.
(3:45) If you have a hiatal hernia your surgeon will pull the herniated part of the stomach back into place in the abdomen and tighten the hiatal ring in the diaphragm, to prevent another hernia this can be done through either an open or laparoscopic procedure. To complete the surgery the abdominal incisions are closed with stitches or staples.
(4.11) When you awake from surgery you will find a small tube passing through your nose and into your stomach. This tube helps remove fluids and gas from the site of the surgery. And is usually removed within 2 days you will be encouraged to get out of bed and begin walking the same day of surgery.

The only medication I can recommend was Pariet. That stuff really works, but it's a daily pill hassle. I found it lasted about 24 hours (or just under) at 20mg. Then the symptoms return. There is a delay reaction if you take the next one, it does not seem to have an immediate effect, so important not to miss a dose. I no longer have to take meds after surgery.

It took about 50 total minutes for the pepcid and some other pill that helps with throwing up and acid reflux and heartburn to FINALLY work for me! I AM SCARED! Should I be ok? If I do have GERD and if I do end up having to get surgery for it, how painful is the surgery afterwards? How long does the pain last. Where is the insision made and how big is the insision usually. What are the after affects? How long is the surgery usually? Are there any concerningly big risks that come along with GERD Surgery? Like if i do end up needing to get the surgery, what are my odds of survival? How effective is GERD surgery? How long will I have to stay off certain foods after getting the surgery? And, what foods will i have to stay off of after getting it, if getting it? WILL I BE OK?

Nucleus Medical Media I'm 24, been in pain for 9 years, and my doctor is basically throwing his hands in the air. No tests are showing what is wrong with me. I've had blood tests, an echocardiagram, two chest x rays, h pylori test, upper GI, ultrasounds and so one. All have come back negative. My symptoms are burning pain under and on my left 7th rib, pins and needles, numbness in the area, a feeling of pressure on my chest, shortness of breath, and lots of indigestion. Does that sound familiar? Anyone?

Laproscopically, the scarring is not that bad and they fade away with time. 4 months down the track some of mine are fading pretty well. Open surgery will result in a longer more noticeable scar. The abdominal area is tender after surgery, and you will likely get twinges and things as scar tissues and sutures settle down. What will really hurt.. is your shoulders right after surgery if they inflate you with CO2. That was very noticeable... but after 3 days it was no longer.

@1993foxyroxy Yep, I used to get pain directly under my right shoulder blade. This was apparently because of the stomach. I have never had a recurrence of that. Normally it is under the shoulder blade than in the middle of the blades, but I guess anything is possible depending on how your nervous system is laid out.

Yes it does ... You are not alone - If you are sleeping then please go to the restroom 1st then sit there as long as ... you can remove some out - I have to use my finger most of the time ... because It is a big different feel ... much better ... less burn and the heart beat is slow down - Other way ... will take more time ... to fell better - After that go eat + drink and moving with any work as light exercise ... This step will help you more ... until the burn .. heart burn - Acid reflux - Gerd ... get along to your move and end up ... OK or much better ...
      I plan to sleep 1 hour .. to 1 and 1/2
Then wake up ... with all these steps
about three ... four sometime 5 in my day ....
It increase the burn If sleep time too long because so weak and lazy wake up ..
These Acid went up to all over the mouth + lips + tongue ... more far as the laser shot to my face + eyes the into the brain ....
I search many treatment and believe the TIF will be the best one for me
      Or the simple LINX
I will do the more these STEPS and will SHARE all information soon

I see alot of people feeling like i do, i just want to know if this surgery will make me eat again and what i like. I first felt globus sensation about 3 months ago and i didnt know what it was about then i ate a slice of pizza a week later and ever since i threw it up the acid and everything i would eat had been coming out of me. Now, theres barely anything around me to eat thats healthy and i can barely enjoy a piece of candy or a sip of soda without having to worry about heartburn. I take omeprazole and it only kinda treats it while im taking it and makes me throw up yellow/green mild acid but once i stop is when it darkens up to a dark color and makes it 2x times worse .... I want to know if theres any medications or treatment that will permantly cure this, if not then atleast if this surgery will??

I've been taking dexilant for about two and a half years or so. It works good one thing I can say is do not drink pop with this it will make you have a yellow acid like diarrhea. Maybe one soda pop a day would be all right. But I cut back to zero. I no longer drink alcohol anymore too. That will aggravate the problem.
