  • The John Deere X738 and Little Buck Loader build a roadway down the hill around the house for the tractor and golf cart. The tractor moved 8 yards of 1-1/2" gravel and 4 yards of pine/spruce mulch one afternoon to make the roadway. While the hill is pine needle covered, it is actually good solid fill from building the house, not sod, so I didn't bother removing the pine needles. The hill was tilted away from the house as well as downhill, so I first leveled out the area where the side tilt was the worst. I then worked my way down around the corner as the tilt was corrected. A lot of fill was needed at the bottom corner. Then I finally finished off the upper portion which only needed a little bit of fill. The opening between the shed and the house foundation looks tight, but there is five feet clear, so plenty of room for the four foot wide tractor and our four foot wide golf cart. The rocks next to the foundation in the video were all dug out of the roadway area next to the shed before work began. Thanks for watching!

    I have a 1984 John Deere 430 with a Yanmar diesel in it, still running like a champ and stout as ever. No dents, dings, rust etc. I keep it in my out building. I am thinking about buying one of these Little Buck loaders after the first of the year. I am concerned that all the weight is on the front of the tractor and bounces a lot. I may run a stabilizer from the top posts down to the frame and put a cross member under it side to side. I also like a traditional shaped bucket, I'm afraid the one on the Little Buck may spill over on the top. Some say build a traditional loader or buy one. I don't have the tools to build one and the rattiest ones I find are high dollar before I restore one! Anyone with suggestions or comments about my concerns and modification plans?

    Aside from the actual lift hight of the loader.. is there a reason you chose the loader over the plow and shovel attachment? That shovel is far less expensive than the LBL. I'm considering the x738 and trying to decide if I'll actually get a lot of use from a loader or if the shovel will work fine for my needs. I just purchased 4 acres and building a log home. About 1.25 acres will be mowing.. and the rest is woods which I'm sure will require some maintenance.

      I chose it mostly for the lift. I didn't need a plow as I also have the snowblower for winter use. The shovel is ok if all you want to do is move gravel around. If you are building a log cabin, you might find the lift of the LBL loader useful in placing some of the lower logs and lifting other things. I had them install a hook on my bucket (it's available as an option) so I could attach a chain for lifting, besides placing items in the bucket. I use the bucket/chain working in our woods. I also have a Strongway ATV log skidding frame and use it for skidding downed trees on our woods. The X738 will skid a pretty big tree with the frame.

      @@whodgdon I'm not building the log home myself. We're having it built. So I won't need it during construction. But I may do some of the landscape grading.. driveway gravel.. etc. I'm just not sure how much actual use I'll get from a FEL so I'm trying to decide if I should go that route. A shovel will prob be enough. But if I were set on a FEL.. I wonder if it would make more sense to get a 1025r instead of the X738. Tough decisions...

      @@randomstuffwithjoe If my primary use was for mowing, I'd get the X738. If my primary use was grading and other earth work, I'd get the 1025r. If you ever think you might want a backhoe, get the 1025r. I mostly use mine for mowing, so that is why I chose the X738 instead of the 1025r. Looks like for your application, the 1025r might be a better choice, but only you know what you intend to do with it. Both are great machines.

      I ordered it online from BXpanded, model PTB48.25 - SDB3/4 Piranha Tooth Bar
      (Actual bucket inside width, to nearest 1/4 Inch: 48.25). The teeth work great, making digging and small brush removal much easier.

      @@whodgdon did you change out the transaxle hydrostatic relief valve on your tractor?

      @@travisboprey4666 No, I have not. It is stock from the factory. No problems with the transaxle. It does have the lockout valve for the mower deck hydraulics.

    How is the lift capacity? I know the website lists 340lb, but do you think it can do more with the right counter balance?

    • @whodgdon
      @whodgdon  5 років тому

      I am very happy with the lift capacity. I use 6 John Deere weights on the back of my X738 tractor with the LBL. I don't think more would help. My experience has been that the hydraulic system, mounting bracket design and bucket on the LBL is rated about right. This setup is meant for light duty use around the home. It is not intended, nor advertised to be, industrial strength. If you really need more capacity, I would recommend a larger tractor and front end loader than the X738 with LBL that I use. It is what it is, and as long as you recognize that, it works great for its intended purpose.

    Nice job. Beats the heck out of a wheelbarrow doesn't it? I really like that you USE
    the tractor, and don't abuse it.
    I have the same LBL and PTB on my 2017 X738. It has proven to be invaluable. It adds
    so much more value to the tractor.
    I did have to build a roller cart to easily remove and reinstall it, because I can't
    service the engine with it installed. Have you figured out any better method?

    • @whodgdon
      @whodgdon  5 років тому

      Thanks, I always try to use, not abuse my equipment. It pays off in the long run.
      For storage, I just took the pallet it was shipped on, strengthened it a bit and added large casters on the bottom and use that for the LBL. I lift/install the LBL using a small chainfall from the garage rafters, since I'm an old geezer and don't have the muscle to lift it by hand. It works well, and I can do it alone no problem.
