Brett Cutajar Did anybody said that their skills are on the same level as srv and albert? Dude we’re just saying that this particular jam reminds us of that particular srv & albert jam. Stop being a party pooper smartass.
I always had the theory Mayer makes pop music to sell big and fund his true passion which is the blues -- the endless footage of him playing with King, Guy, Clark Jr, Clapton, etc is proof enough for me that he is a serious student of the genre. Always loved his tone too. Tasty licks and great feel. Will always have great respect to Mayer as a player, definitely doing his part to keep the blues alive for the new generation.
I think he likes both. As a guitar player, the blues is his roots. As a songwriter, his heart is in pop. That's why he made the "pop blues" fusion kinda thing.
He is quite a player I love my Strat but I recently bought a Casino and wow surprisingly totally different very nice but when I finish playing with the casino I always jump on the strat and can really appreciate what that guitar can do.
Man, everyone who criticises John Mayer and his blues playing needs to watch this. It's phenomenal, and even though you can clearly hear the influences behind it, it still has a breath of originality behind it.
Yeah I knew he was a very smart player but I never really got into his music I have heard him countless times playing gigs but this was the best I’ve ever heard him absolutely amazing performance.
Booker T's vocals are phenomenal. He's still got it. Unreal. If you're an Albert King fan, you understand just how on point Clark's channeling of King's guitar work is. From the tone to the the licks, what a performance. Mayer comes in and just knocks it out of the park. What a joy to watch.
I gotta say, even Gary was shaking his head at how amazing some of Mayer's licks were. Gary is a beast on the axe too don't forget. Watch his live performance of "When my train pulls in". Some really, really nice sounds there.
John's rhythm is on point. He doesn't just stay in the pocket, he has permanent residency in the pocket. And Gary's musical knowledge is on another level. His guitar solos almost have a conversational feel about them. These two collaborating would probably make the most soulful pop rock album ever.
It seems to me that Gary was actually in the stead of Albert King in the heart of his solos...he was the one I think that stayed in the pocket. Mayer's a beast....but I felt Gary's solos were more talkative. He's not a run and gunner but neither were both Kings. I just started playing electric in 2018 so I"m learning from this video for sure!! :) Cheers!!
The Torch Has Been Passed And Is Safe In Their Hands.. I’ve NEVER seen ANYone that can truly play themselves have anything but praise for John Mayer. His tone made Paul Reed Smith revise the way he makes ALL his pickups!
I’m a massive JM fan and I come back to this video all the time. I seriously think it’s my favorite Mayer solo that I’ve ever heard. Masterful on every level.
I always find this video hilarious. Gary carry’s the song quite well. Plays very authentically, vocals on point. The lad on the piano sings a couple verses. Then...JOHN MAYER. He plays one note and the song dynamic changes and he becomes a total guitar beast. The song takes one more of a boogie.
Hey man, "The lad on the piano" as you said, is Booker T Jones, the composer of this one and many other great songs. And also, he sings his heart out with a lot of feeling and mojo. You should look his work up on the internet before talking. So, please: show some respect!
Nicolas, thanks for stating the obvious truth. Both of them are amazing guitarists. Stop comparing them! It's seriously idiotic, they both sound phenomenal.
John Mayer surprised me a while back.. such a tasty dude.. even does free guitar lessons when he's in the hotel between shows. on you tube.. very knowledgable and kind.. Gary clark is raw talent and feel beautiful combo
You’re right. I don.’t get why they didn’t mention BookerTJones. He composed this tune for Albert King , and William Bell wrote the lyrics. And what a gorgeous, groovy and cool voice !gives me goosebumps……
You know Albert and Stevie were looking down and smiling over these two. Not better, but great in it's own way. A new generation paying homage to the kings of blues that came before them, carrying on the music that inspired them to pick up an instrument in the first place.
Keep coming back to this, the raw power in both guitarists is just electrifying. Being a guitar player, I personally felt John let out that laid-back and cool kind of i-know-what-i’m-doing kind of vibe, whereas you get the all out raw playing of Gary Clark. Both on my opinion gave one of the best solo-duels I’ve ever heard from a live performance. Beyond fantastic, love this.
What a great time to be alive! Even this generation couldn't get the privilege to be born during the era of SRV and Albert King, we still got greats of John Mayer and Gary Clark Jr who still are the new guys that love the old music. For the later generation will there be someone new to carry the legacy? Don't know. But we sure are really blessed :))

The worst thing that ever happened to John Mayer was that he became a pop singing idol and little girl heartthrob; his recognition as a damn good guitarist (i.e., one of the best) is ignored due to that first impression.
