- Hundreds of women's police stations have been set up across India to combat domestic abuse and sexual violence, following the Delhi rape case in December 2012.
Parmila Dalal is second-in-command at the women's police station in Sonipat, in the northern state of Haryana. Every day she has to deal with the cases the public bring to her.
She encounters family members at war over such contentious matters as caste, dowry payment and relations with abusive in-laws. India's Ladycops reveals how women's lives are changing in India today, and how they often struggle to reconcile the conflicting demands made upon them.

its very rare nowadays.... our generation consider them as a liability once they are old..
I salute her
The way she manages to work without neglecting her family is truly beautiful.
This lady is such a mature and an inspirational woman .
Inayat Singh this is quite weird. I’ve seen a comment from you in some video I watched awhile back 😂
Not just inspirational for women but for all police that they do their job with humanity , social n logical.

I am from Papua New Guinea and I love this video. When I was in Australia and New Zealand,my best friends were from India..I became friends with them because I love Indian Bollywood movies, they are popular in my country. My favorite actor is Shah Rukh Khan..
By the way, great to see Indian women joining the police force. These policewomen are beautiful.
I love India.
I couldn't control my tears wathcing how this lady works. Salute her and as a Indian guy I want to thank you for a noble service in spite of such difficult conditions in our horrible infrastructure and social systems. She is still protecting "goodness" and "faith in goodness" that still exists in Indian sociey and its still not decayed beyond repair. People are still nice and good in India. They are sick with regressive social ideas like caste, regressive traditions like dowry and this lady is doing her job thanklessly. All the rights laws in place. People just need to be socially and economically emancipated. It WILL happen. Thank you Al Jazeera your documentaries rock!
This is my INDIA. Respect to lady cop for doing her job dedicatedly.
Beautiful documentary. A real insight into the heart of rural India. We have a long way to go, but we are on our way. God bless India
your ashwariya , Kajol are nothing infront of this lady Respect from Pakistan to all such women in India. Real heroes
Salam from India
Belittling other women to support some is such a disgrace.
Wow this is so amazing! What really surprised me is how they dished out true justice. There was no feminist or misogynistic bias. They actually truly examined each case without just instantly siding with the woman. They also gave out very fair punishments.
@Pete Pete What you're saying is silly & obviously you didn't watch it to the end, listen closely to what she says at the end . Why they didn't tell us what happen to the woman who falsely accuse those 3 men of rape? She wasted the police & tax paying citizens time & money, she should be charged with making false accusation of a crime.
@@anthonylew183 and they do. its called defamation and many have filed suit in India.
love the one in charge, what a fierce warrior she is.
As an Indian I would suggest two things for our Indian police force .
1. To leave the British era attitude of policing .Now you are policing your own citizen not as a ruler like British used to do.
2. Govt should upgrade the equipment of police like 303 rifle and sticks. With sophisticate gun and telecommunications equipment.
In UK n US rape is everywhere , not even a news.
blackdiamond92 I smell you are an anti India n hater. .. .. in western country mentality is same no better. They victimize women n their dress. Recent case is Ireland where shamelessly court produced her panty and telling her panty is the reason why she got raped. Western media good at hiding their raped n ugly stories unless Tiananmen would take place n ppl like you also blame women I know that n come to puke on India n other 3rd world countries on UA-cam.
I won't bring here Islamic countries * there talking about rape is blasphemy. Families stay silent

During British rule, police were Indian. Top position was held by British. BTW British left in 1947 how can the present police after 70 yrs relate to it. There was a time when Mumbai police was compared to Scotland Yard for their efficiency.
@blackdiamond92 that's why everyone's stabbing everyone in London town.
THIS - is real women empowerment. These beautiful & wonderful ladies should be our role models rather than Bollywood actresses (whom youngsters usually idolize today).
Dude...women empowerment comes in different forms..why do u have to compare...
@@nickyetti93 the fact that I get a differing opinion 2 years after my comment, simply validates my point. Bollywood girls are NOT empowerment, my friend. They r born with silver spoons & sleep their way up. In fact yes, there is no comparison all together :-)

People in India should be educated about caste system. Caste system in scriptures(in Sanskrit) was a division of labour, not hereditary. People were free to choose their profession/occupation. Every one is born equal.
@Raghu Reddy that's how it was practiced till British came. Reddys were land tilters like Kapus till 12th century but they became kings & kingly clan after they started an empire in Telangana region.
It's same for most castes
Reddys, Kamma, Kapus & Velama were all land tilters just 800years back & now all of them are fighting each other for power for their own castes in politics

@@tonysmith6967 again the britts....those bastards looooool
@@tonysmith6967 take responsibility stop diverting the blame, we africans too do this blame British for terrible thing we use to do before they came
From the later vedic society onwards the cast system began to be hierarchical. There are evidence of strong and discriminatory practices against the lower cast from the Gupta ages itself recorded by visiting travellers. It's an attempt to whitewash the rigid cast discrimination by solely blaming the British for it.
Great work ladies ! Keep up the excellent work and inspiration for others to follow !

Although I understand that it is culture, and the officers mean well, I have to disagree with the coercion of the victims to forgive the parties that assaulted them. Everytime this happens then these people do not learn or take the law seriously. This is exactly why crimes of caste still happen, and domestic abuse still goes on. It needs to go on the books and people need to learn the hard way.
Its a nasty Pandora's box. Once opened their will be no end to it.
@@rockstarzzzw200 I'm not following? There will be no end to domestic abuse true, but people will think seriously before doing anything rash, and people who would normally be hurt severely, or even killed might not. There's also the fact that it will help bring cultural change. Remember sati was common place, but i was outlawed when the British took over, and i dont think anyone does tgat anymore...and if it does happen its a very isolated case. This is the same with domestic abuse and violence based upon caste. So open the box. And protect women. Women are the life preservers and nurturers of life in any society. When woman are not valued society suffers.
@@omggiiirl2077 Second the case you talking about is not a attack on Women case.
It's an Hate crime based upon the Caste , you hear the official clearly mentioning that if the filed complaint is registered. Their is non bailable warrent and accused will be not only be arrested, he is supposed to be in Jail till case last. So now comes the method india court process is complex and cases can last year's. Just an example from 2007 case where the accused was charged by the District court for 3 years in jail but he was already in jail for about 16 months.
His lawyer appealed in High court and cases lasted for another 2 years. The court overturned the decision with a Fine and 11 months jail but by that time. He has already been in jail for 42 months. So he wasted more resources and still served more than the punishment justified by the court. That officer understands that, her method is awareness over oppression. The purpose of institution like Jail is not to punish but reform people that was the basic principle.
Other thing Caste is touchy topic. It's not as simple as western make it to me. It's layered and complex, Right now India is standing at point where Young generation is more westernised and exposed to world and older generation which is more culturally orthodox. With time civic sense will improve and their will be a difference.
Once a Caste case in India has a power to cause civil unrest especially in rural and Orthodox part of the world. You have to actually come and spend time here.
Or you can watch someone like Karl Rock or Rajiv Malhotra . To get a better perspective from a foreigners view.
@@rockstarzzzw200 then maybe its time to overhaul the system. Theres quite few things wrong with Indias judicial penal system. Like how accused mothers are raising young children and infants in jail.
@@omggiiirl2077 it's already taken care off.
In 2016, the Supreme Court issued guidelines in the RD Upadhyay vs State of AP case to ensure that certain basic standards are observed with regard to children of women prisoners. These guidelines are aligned with international standards such as the United Nation's Rules for the Treatment of Women Prisoners (UN Bangkok Rules) and the UN Minimum Standards for Treatment of Prisoners (the Mandela Rules). But the implementation of this ruling leaves much to be desired.
During the hearing, the Supreme Court, even as it is observed that a prison is no place to raise a child, recognised that children may have to stay in jail for no fault of their own. Given their reasoning that children should not be separated from their mothers in their formative years, especially when there are no close family members willing or available to take care of them, the court said that children should be allowed to stay with women prisoners till the age of six, but not after that.
The court directed state governments to protect the fundamental rights of children in prison, work towards their welfare and provide for their social, educational and cultural development. Children are entitled to food, shelter, medical care, clothing, education and recreational facilities as a matter of right, it said.
