Roger Daltrey - 1977 - One of the Boys - Say It Ain't So Joe HQ
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 бер 2009
- Roger Daltrey's cover of the Murray Head classic, featuring the Who's (late) rhythm section - John Entwistle on bass & Keith (at least he's wearing *something*) Moon on drums. Guesting on Guitar is the late, great Jimmy McCullogh (Thunderclap Newman, Wings). Wait.. this whole backup band is "late" - say it ain't so...
The original file was found on an FTP server, it was a very poor quality copy. I cleaned up the video a bit & re-proportioned it, being that it looked squashed. Replaced & re-synced the muddy audio. Not perfect by far, though. Until a cleaner looking video is unearthed, this will have to do for now.
I would like to thank you all for sharing this & leave a nice note. If you use it on your site or page, it would be nice to get a little credit. Took me many hours to make this video watchable & worth listening to while using pre-historic rendering software from the mid 2000's.
For best results, watch in HQ with headphones/earbuds on (or with really good speakers!)

I can NOT get enough of this vid.
Nor can I.

Jimmy McCulloch ( Wings ) , John Entwistle and Keith Moon ( The Who ) 3 greats names of the british music RIP .
One of the best songs ever!! My brother in-law died April 23rd 2004. He loved The Who and Roger Daltrey. After he died this song was a real comfort to me:) his name was Joe. He's in Heaven now..11 years ago today..
Danny Boy Nice one Danny, keep playing The Who my friend your Brother in Law would have wanted that!
He would have loved that. I will man. Thanks for what you wrote means alot... I will see him again.
And we will see all our loved ones someday...
Danny Boy That's ok Danny I know how you feel as I lost a very good friend who was a massive Who Fan and certain Who songs when I play them remind me of him.
Stay safe and be lucky my friend!
Beautiful song. Glad it brings you comfort, Danny Boy. Certain songs remind me of close friends/family who've passed also. Roger solo has a lot songs like this, even though Pete gets most of the credit (I'm a fan of Roger, Pete, and John's solo projects....not so much the one Keith album, lol). All the best
+Danny Boy I'm sorry. I know how you feel, this song tears my heart out every time I listen to it.And I'm sorry for your loss. But mostly I'm sorry that I find it very funny that a Guy with the name Danny Boy posts about a song he listens to in memorial.I don't doubt it's all true. Buy Danny Boy tears my heart out every time I hear it too!The Irony is just too much to pass up.PLAU (Peace Love and Understanding!)DPR
This song works on so many levels. When I'm sad I need to hear Murray's version, but when I'm angry there's no substitute for Roger's rendition.
I love both versions, but Daltrey really belts out the lyrics!
True, but Keith moon makes me smile on the drums. Hope your ok now
In 1979, the Hollies released an outstanding version of this song. It's on the "5317704" album.
Could somebody please post links to those other versions I love this song so much and I only know this one
@@JefW ua-cam.com/video/UI3Zi056PuM/v-deo.html is Murray Head's
one of the greatest vocalists ever
I love that you made this factual statement eleven years ago, thousands have read your comment, and NOT ONE OF THEM can disagree!
I don't have sufficient words to describe how much I love his voice.
Daltrey's voice is one in a million.
Paul Jackson no singer before or since can sing with so much emotion.
MURRAY HEAD's version is as well a masterpiece
Murray Head's whole album "Say it ain't so" is one of the greatest ignored masterpieces of music. I love Roger but even his version pales to Murray Head's original. Where in the hell does this clip come from? Moon, Roger and Entwhistle but no Pete?
@@crimsonwolf9099 Daltrey's '77 solo release, this was the promo film. It's good to see it again.
What a piece of art this song is. Musical genius from Keith Moon and John Entwistle. RIP and miss them both.
and Jimmy McCulloch....(it's OK to post 11 years later i hope)
@@LEGOpachinko Mind reader LOL.
@@LEGOpachinko rus is probably dead
They were amazing.
@@LEGOpachinko Paul McCartney chose well.
What a fitting song for today. Wow.
This is the brilliance of You Tube, when somebody puts on a long lost track that you’ve not heard for ages , thank you
This is the best song ever sung by Roger Daltrey, and really shows off his tremendous vocal range. It's haunting and he really makes it come to life.
Genial version, me gusta mucho más que la original de Murray
ROGER DALTRY does an AWESOME Version and it was released when Murray Head was performing as Jesus Christ, in the Andrew Lloyd Webber Play: "JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR", the Most Popular LIVE Production... MURRAY HEAD is an INCREDIBLE Songwriter and his version is SPECTACULAR Too!
Murray Head was on A&M Records and this was his "Breakthrough Single".
THIS Video is SO SPECIAL as the MUSICIANSHIP IS UNPARALLELED and it Sounds BEAUTIFUL and Natural Too!
Thank You "LEO LIAR" for THIS...
SO HARD to become "SPEECHLESS" but You SUCCEEDED! ❤ 😅
Man I love John. Probably the best bassplayer of all time and yet such modesty. What a man! RIP
Even the back-up vocals are PHENOMENAL.
Great to see little Jimmy McCulloch on guitar 🎸 a sad loss to music, along with Mr moon and the ox, what a line up.
One of the best singers ever.......
Absolutely!
That's a heck of a lot of talent on one stage.
Best I've heard Daltrey, solo. Nice to see Moonie and Entwistle backing him up.
Hey LeoLiar905....Excellent job on this video. Thanks for cleaning it up and bringing it back to us! Fabulous.
What an amazing track! Daltery has never sounded better - what a great voice. And there's Moony the Loony and The Ox helping him out. Should have been a big hit.
My dad may not have been the best father in the world but at least, through him, I listened to songs like this, growing up.
I REASON WITHIN my spirit of the us in GEN.1:26
For a second I thought you meant your dad was Roger Daltrey.
That was anything but jovial old chap!
I hope my girls will say the same thing about me..
@@nicksmithworldsame
Incredible, Nothing like it today.
Daltrey has a voice to provoke all emotions. Fantastic vocals fronting the best ever band.
+ADY954 I think that's the single best description of RD's voice ever.
Still the best live band!
roger is a true pisces.
Exactly!
he also is very handsome..
This is absolutely fantastic! I've always loved the song but this version is extra special. Also the backing singers tickled me - they look like they've wandered in on their way to a dinner party!
Thank you ❤ for the work you put in to this, great job! One of this old womans favorite songs throughout a long old Rock-n-Roll life.
Almost 47 yrs. ago & still resonates on this day of 5/20/24.
Again, thank you, God bless.

Such a beautiful song! One of the greatest songs ever!
The raw emotion in Daltry's voice makes this the best version of this song ever.
One of the greatest songs ever! I love both Murray Head's introspective version and Roger Daltry's as it has so much ROCK energy to it and the total band sound ;)
Roger's finest vocal performance.
Oh my God thank you so much for posting this! I thought I had seen every who and solo who related video from the 60s through the 70s and 80s and I loved this song so deeply since I was a kid in the early 80s that to discover a promo video, for it just made me so happy just now. Thank you so much! Roger‘s voice is as amazing as any time with The Who on this record! I love you, Roger, till the day I die! Your records have meant so much to me
You're quite welcome!
Thanks for sharing !!!! Love this song , didn’t even know jimmy was in this rendition!!! Another one dearly missed . Great job !!!!
Also, Roger's hair is amazing!!!
Beautiful controlled and tasteful drumming
Featureing~~~~~Jimmy "Mac" McCullough on Guitar ~~~~He Left Us To Soon ~~So Much Talent Man....R.I.P ..Jimmy !!
Jimmy McCullough, excellent guitar work in the 70's with Paul MacCartney and Wings
Not to mention John Entwistle and Keith Moon...
these guys were on acid or mescaline trippin man so cool
Tremendo "cancionon". Roger Daltrey, gran puntal de The Who. Toda una leyenda, en Woodstock 69'. Gracias por compartir.
Daltrey breezes it and delivers the song with conviction.
I am here because of "Snowpiercer," it introduced me to this song for the first time EVER two days ago, and it has been haunting my mind ever since, as the first thing in my head when I woke up the past two mornings. (*Just had to come and find it. Thank you UA-cam*)
And man, can Roger Daltrey SING HIS ASS OFF!!! What an absolutely fantastic song! And KUDOS to *Murray Head* for such beautiful words! 👏👏👏🙏
Excellent Song! Great voice by Roger. The "Ox" on bass, and a shirtlessmad man on the drums! Wish I were 21 again!
Une voix une présence,: du pur plaisir!
Absolument superbe. Merci
In the 70's there was NOBODY to touch Daltrey
I’m 66 and it’s the first time I’ve ever heard this song brilliant.
Quel magnifique chanteur, et quelle magnifique chanson !
Been looking for this song for 35 years !!!
Thank You.
What a band! My favorite Roger solo tune.
This is brilliant. What a group of artists and this song is beautiful
Best version , It has the most feeling, What a voice!
This is wonderful, Roger is great.
I got hip to this song on a mix tape from brother who was in the Army! He was gone a lot and left this tape behind so it had Vanhalen the doors and this song by Rodger Daultry came on and thought it was the WHO and after some research I found out most of them helped out by playing for this track!!! After loosing my bro to cancer and cov I now see why he put that song on his mix tape!!! The resolve he had and determine smile!!! P.S. I have been playing drums since I was young playing with paper coat hangers on old bar stools listening to various artists and then one one day I was inspired by Keith Moon in a poster I bought and the many tapes and albums and cd's!!!!!!! I still play ! If you get in a rutt remember say it ain't so and the WHO WITH KEITH MOON DRIVING THE BAND!!!!!!!!!!!! THANKS RODGER!!!!!!!!P.S. I do have a set of Premier Drums!!!!!!!!!!!!
Estupenda versión del tema de Murray Head, Daltrey un portento, arreglos y cambios de ritmo, fantásticos. Un temazo.
Jimmy McCullogh!! RIP. If you want the opposite of Pete Townshend's intense presence...McCullough fits the bill. 26 years old and gone much too soon. Thank you for sharing!!
I thought that was JM on guitar! What a band
McCulloch ...
@@MrHeavyrock get a life.
40 years have gone by and I still love this!
If you hadn't helped a mate buy a bike? That's a stupid accusation. It isn't like you dropped a plate of cocaine in front of him. Or stuck a needle in his arm. Great story, anyway :)
This version is just so good, love The Who.
Thank you for this. I am a life-long WHO fan and lover of their solo work too and this is a wonderful clip. Roger is an incredible vocalist and hero....and still sexy as hell!
Thank you so much for uploading this and cleaning up
the sound! Brings me back to my early teen years!
Never seen this video before. Fantastic with John and Keith on board. Great sound from the great rock vocalist.
Thank you so much for this post.
I am old airborne,,canadian airbirne 80's. Cannot tell u how much this song means

this is the first time that i see a cover better than the original...with respect to murray head the owner...
Good comment.😎
Absolutely fabulous
saw the WHO many times in the late 60s and 70s ...EPIC music from one of the greatest bands ever
By far, this is the Best version of the song. And by the way, John, I admire you. Best bass player.
I disagree, the original Murray Head version is the best. But this is great.
@@TheRealPapaChico
Murray Head did this first?
I'll have to check that out.
Well, it is his song .
@@ernestkinas5973 yes Murray deserves credit. To b fair..I first heard daltrey, and is still my favorite version l. Sorry Murray, Plz all give Murray credit where credit is due. Thnx I all 4 ur X.
I like the quiet middle section on Mr Head's original, builds musically and volumatically to an intense crescendo. This is a nice version and a bit different.
Never heard this before....great song.
I haven' t got any words. Simply sublime.
Brilliant tune! Murray head I thank you bud!
The greatest rock vocalist who just happens to front the greatest live rock band of all time.
i agree
I agree too 1 million percent
are you talking of robert pant?
That is never Axl Rose surely............
Jim Kennelly yep
Not forgetting the great John Entwistle as ever the anchor in the background. Great version!
My favorite song by Roger.....AWESOME!
A great song a great singer👍
The Best Voice for Pure Rock and Roll,,,,,,,imo
Not just your opinion...
Millions!!!!!
Wow! Accidentally found Murray Head's OV on Spotify yesterday and sorta remembered Roger Daltrey doing this when I was a kid. Thank you LeoLiar for taking the time and trouble to make this brilliant live performance accessible to all
Thanks for posting ....loved the who had no idea this existed
Any time I get bad news..this song flows through my mind. Daltrey and company are legends.
This song has the sheer power and glory of biblical old testament scale and it has Daltry, mean moody and magnificent . surely the best of the ultimate four top frontmen ever, Plant, Rodgers, Mercury and Daltry.
Thanks for putting in all the hard work to make this a pleasure to watch.
Fantastic, nothing more can be said.
THIS is fabulous! Thank you for putting this out here!
daltrey's voice between 71-81 was really great.....
You joking he is never that old......................
yes.
Que du bonheur;
Merci pour ce concert
Thanks Leo...sounds fantastic and looks great...Mr. Moon in fine form!
Toujours sublime à écouter. Que de souvenirs de mon premier concert : The Who ! Inoubliable !
Jimmy Mculloch on guitar. He looks so happy there, great player.
RIP. Great performance on this tune.
doesn't he ply with paul mc cartney and wings also?
I thought that's who it was the who connection was Thunderclap Newman I'll be damned
Dead at twenty'six.
was it a drug overdose then?@@ernestkinas5973
Thanks Leo. Well done. I just discovered this song. I'm a long time Who and Roger fan, and am here to support Murray, as there are only a few of us Murrays around.
LeoLiar ou are a hero! This is such a marvelous song. I humbly thank you for your work. I do love this song so.
I keep coming back to this video ( :
You are quite welcome
Album was "One of the Boys" absolutely Loved it. Released in 77 MCA records.
Don't give shit what anyone says,Daltry is absolutely fucking brilliant and this song explains why.
Mods ruled ok
True story.
I've known and loved Murray Head's version of this song for decades but never knew Roger Daltrey had recorded it. Another great version!
Thanks for posting this great version
KEITH MOON!!!! love it
one of favorite songs of all time
Only just found this, but you've made a brilliant job of 'reconditioning' this. Thank you so much - it takes me back to a very happy time
Jimmy McCulloch is awesome in this, what a solo 😮
Such a beautiful song.
So lovely.
oh what a Magnificat voice he has, oh his music reached my heart and soul.
The Who greatest rock band ever. Great Daltry song. Seen The Who in 77 in Detroit at 2500 seat Masonic Temple Best concert I've seen. Townsend slid across stage on his knees. This was the concert right before Cincinnati tragedy. They sold out 82,000 at the Silverdome next.
Exactly- because he sang from HIS heart and soul. Such passion!!
fabulous, I play it often, and just love it. thanks
Daltrey had the most powerful voice, not in pitch or volume, but it was like a hammer blow to the emotions far and above all those heavy metal and rock vocalists who all followed The Who who were essentially the template for that whole genre of music anyway.
Jimmy McCulloch, What a fabulous guitarist he was, left us at the ago of 26, a tragedy.
And the clueless editing or cameraman missed "most" of his "fantastic playing".
One of those great songs that Rog found that suits his voice perfectly. Like it was written for him. Without Your Love is another. (What a great set of people in this video, such talent on one stage!)
Damn,roger is the man
LeoLiar905 Great work and thank you. This is an historic performance and you have done important work by saving it. 100%
Released on my tenth birthday this single brings me back to childhood memories whenever I want. Thanks a lot Roger, by far the best voice in rock ever!
