    When I got out of the Army in '68, I bought a Mustang GT with the 302 in it...and it was respectfully fast, so I can only imagine the same car with a 427. Wish I had kept my Bullet car :)

    the 1967 Shelby GT500 is one of the most beautiful cars ever made. A 427 should've been an option...

    • @sirjammer

      my Uncle raced a 1967 and 1969 Shelby, both with a 427 SOHC “cammer”. He's told me quite a few times that if it wasn't for Stengers ford and “Ohio” George Montgomery in Dayton, Ohio neither car would've been possible. On a few Fridays/Saturdays my Uncle would drive my grandfather and my-5 year old-self in those cars to Stengers ford and then to “make a little spending money” from a few Chevy and Dodge boys in Dayton...I just wish my Uncle would've kept at least one of the cars, hell even a engine.

      I would check the box for a 427 SOHC engine. If only.

      Although I owned a 68 gt500kr with a 427 side oiler, dealer installed, because the person who ordered the car wouldnt accept it without the 427 he ordered, he ordered it in late 67 when it was on option list.

      It’s one of my dream cars. My dad has a 1968 California Special. It’s an amazing car but it’s not the fastback so I feel it loses a bit of its charm

    My uncle had a GT500 in 1967. I was too young to drive then, but I got a few rides in it. To a young kid, it seemed like a rocket ship although it probably wasn't all that fast by today's standards.
    His was a stick shift and the thing pulled like crazy in 2nd gear. If you got on it in first gear, forget it. The back tires were up in flames. People forget how light weight the earlier Mustangs were, too.
    None of the 4000+ pound nonsense you see today with pony cars.

    • @duster0066
      @duster0066 5 років тому

      Rodger that on the weight. My first race car build (meaning lousy) was a 67 390 car. It weighted 2850 before the exhaust was put on it, so under 3000 race ready with a full cage. I feel there is no excuse for a Mustang to weigh nearly 4000lbs. I bought an 07 GT and hated it because of the weight. I traded it for a Miata. Much better.

    Amazing car. I just finished to collect all the parts to assemble a die cast model of the '67 Shelby GT500, 1:8 scale. It's exactly the same as this, but whit the white stripes. It cost me around 1100 euros and the collecting process took about 2 years. A true legend.
    Great show, keep up.

    I owned a 67 GT350 4 speed car in Candy Apple Red. I restored it and had a lot of fun with it, and then I made a big mistake selling it. If I had a GT500, It would be awesome to have a 427 in it with a 4 speed. I wouldn't want an automatic trans in a Shelby.

    There are three known 427 cars. The super snake came out of Mel Burns Ford in Long Beach, Ca. The problem was the cost. It was 7,000.00. The cost of a 427 Cobra. In stock form the 427 was rated at 425 HP. I have an early 67 Shelby. With a cam change, Ford 427 Iron heads, headers, stainless steel valves, roller rockers and simple durability changes It makes a respectable 512 horsepower and 498 pounds of torque at 5500 rpm and is completely streetable, even maintaining power brakes. There's also nothing to indicate this vehicle was a dealer installed 427 car. The registry shows this as well. Beautiful car none the less, as my Shelby is the same colors with a parchment interior.

    Carroll Shelby and Bob Tasca both offered the 1967 GT 500 with an optional 427 side-oiler if the buyer was willing to pay the additional cost. How many were built? Who knows, surely not many, but there were GT 500's built with a 427 side-oiler. The video states that you had no choice when buying the 67 GT 500 regarding the 428PI motor, which is not accurate. Some were special ordered with the 427.

    • @ranger-3.0V6
      @ranger-3.0V6 6 років тому +2

      Correct, and the de-tuned "W" code 427 was an option in the '68 GT's too. They were no slouch though, as they made "advertised" 390 HP and 480 LB/FT of twist! Keep in mind that they revved it up to only 4600 RPM... I'd say 420-430 HP @ 6,000 RPM which it was capable of, and then some!

    The "Side Oiler" that he was talking about was the "R" code which was the bad boy that was raced in NASCAR but, the 427 in that 500 is the "W" code, single 4 barrel, de-tuned version of the "R" code engine.

    • @burlingtonbill1

    I owned a 69 Mach 1 GT that had a 390 in it. The big blocks are kind of a pain in the ass because there's no room in the engine compartment. If you want to put headers on it you have to cut out part of the shock towers and to change the spark plugs I'd have to disconnect the motor mounts and lift the motor up and use extensions on my wrenches to get to them. It was fun as hell though. So much torque!

    In 1967 a bunch of us all bought mustangs. One friend bought the GT500. He told the dealer he wanted a 427 not the 428 and they said it was not available that way however they knew there were several cars perhaps as many as eight who’d had the dealer install a 427 in the brand new car. Big money. Wonder if this is one?

    I’d take a 428 with a 427 intake manifold, like Tasca did with the Cobra Jet drag Mustangs in ‘68. All the high-end performance you need to run a quick quarter, and enough durability to drive home from the strip.
