I feel the same way. Obviously there are going to be people who don't like Luca, and that's fine, that's their opinion, but the issue I'm seeing is that people are too busy comparing Luca to Pixar's other movies instead of seeing it for what it is; a great slice of life film with themes of acceptance and not being afraid to show the world who you really are.

I will stand by this until the end of time: Luca is a better and more memorable movie than Soul. I only watched Soul once and felt nothing besides thinking the score was really good. With Luca, I already wanna rewatch it, it gave me nostalgia for Italy and made me wanna go back there as soon as possible, it made me crave for some pasta, but most importantly it gave me the feels and emotional core that Soul didn't have for me.

I felt the same way. I think Pixar movies are very subjective depending on what your tastes are. Luca felt almost like a perfect movie to me, even though it wasn't high concept like certain other pixar movies, it didn't have to be. It was going for a simple Ghibli-esque story and it executed it brilliantly. And the way they nailed the Italian seaside atmosphere in every single shot of the film was the cherry on top.

I was really impressed with "Luca," especially with how they handled the Italian culture, the overall art direction and animation, and the friendship between the three kids. The way Luca, Alberto, and Giulia interacted with each other felt very genuine, whether it was by having fun or expressing conflicting ideas.
Part of me still wishes to have seen both this and "Soul" on the big screen, but I'm still glad I got to see them. Hopefully, Pixar's next film "Turning Red" will also turn out well, and that it'll be released in theaters.

Here's my two cents: I don't think Soul is such a great movie. It's an okay movie. I think it has a way too much complicated worldbuilding whose explanation steals a precious 20/30 minutes from the plot and that it aims too high with the whole "what's the meaning of life?" message. I did not dislike it but, for instance, I liked Onward much better, because it looks simple and light hearted but in the end it surprises you with this very mature and deep ending that Soul simply does not have. To me Soul's ending felt like "ok, this is still a kids' movie so we cannot let the main character die even if it would be the most coherent choice, so let's just bring him back to life because it feels nice". This is not a mature ending. The fact that Luca is "simple" is not a flaw, films do not have to be ultra complicated to be good, especially children's movies. I mean Raya is a clusterfuck of a movie and I think that's its biggest mistake: wanting to get too much done in so little time. I wished animation learned from Luca that a good movie does not have to be a complicated movie that speaks about life and death and forces to make you cry at the end, but it could just be a simple coming-of-age story about a summer friendship and getting accepted for who you are (I loved Massimo and Alberto's father and son relationship btw).

The plot was a bit deeper than how you described. It was a good feel good movie and though its not pixars best, it was actually pretty good for what it was. Also not every pixar movie needs a sad feel to it and its good that they don't over do that

Luca is very different from Pixar's usual output and feels very Miyazaki (being a slice of life story)
It has a lot of amazing details and powerful small exchanges between characters that are only noticed on re-watch

I think it's moreso that expectations are too "specific" when it comes to Pixar movies. Pixar movies are expected to be high concept and existential, but this movie is a smaller scale friendship story. But I don't think that makes it lesser, just different. Very much like a lot of Miyazaki movies that focus on childhood and friendship - I wouldn't rate those as lesser than movies like Inside Out and Soul either.

If you watch the artwork in the credits of the movie (yes, I was so drawn to the movie that I even sat through the credits just to reminisce about the story), there is a sketch of Luca and Giulia playing with space toys while watching what I assume is the moon landing. With that said, this story might take place in the late 60's. To be fair, I was also thinking this time period might be more like the 50's or earlier 60's before I saw that sketch.

I really liked this movie. I enjoyed it all the way through, I loved the visuals and I loved the characters and I loved the story. I feel like it could have been more 'epic' than it was. But then again, why do we expect every movie to have some huge terrifying or gut-wrenching drama? It's possible for a movie to be good without kicking you in the face with emotion. I feel like it's nice to just have a rather calm movie now and then with some chuckles and some heart. Just some kids learning about the world and having fun in a beautiful setting. It's pleasant, pretty and wholesome.

I think that expectations are always to high with Pixar due to the aura of infallibility given by the early movies of the studio although (imo) it's been quite a while since a true masterpiece. Since 2010 except for Inside Out (that tbh I didn't like as much as everyone else seemed to) I don't think any of the movies could be said to be masterpieces. obviously I'm not talking about the CG and the technical stuff which is always incredible and the graphical aspect is always mesmerizing.

"our expectations too high" is a funny way of asking whether Pixar has lost it's original spark. Sure the animation is fantastic, but non of the recent films are going to be held on the same pedestal as TS 1-3, The Incredibles, Cars, Finding Nemo, Ratatouille, Wall-e or Monsters Inc. You can kind of see Pixar going from telling the stories they felt needed to be told, and the ones Disney Higher ups ordered them to make

The only thing I have to say that's somewhat negative about Luca is why were the parents so worried about Luca going up on the surface when the grandmother didn't give a single care. I thought this film was amazing. It’s a film about growing up and discovering the world. Every time Luca daydreams, it’s about something new that he learned about the world. He imagines flying an old fashioned airplane through space, vespas as wild animals, and swimming in space with anchovies to touch the moon. When he imagines flying through the sky and seeing the world on a Vespa, he only sees islands with tiny houses because that’s all he’s seen of the world. He is creative and smart. He fixes the phonograph and realizes that they can make a Vespa with stuff from the island. If you think this movie isn’t grand, think about it from Luca’s perspective. Imagine if you’ve only lived with your family and herded fish and never seen anything. We know what Italy looks like. We know what pasta is. Since Pixar has existed, it has shown us new fantastic worlds. Porto Rosso is the new fantastic world that is unimaginable to Luca. They could have easily created emotional moments like a talk between Alberto and Julia’s father, but instead they show us. We see Julia’s father go searching for Alberto which is something his own father would have never done. We see moments like Alberto telling Luca that his parents would never come looking for him. He was alone for so long. I liked the fact that Julia’s stomach got upset from eating the pasta so she wasn’t that fast. I love the villain cause he is probably my age and still competing against children just for himself and money. Parts of it did feel like a Ghibli film, the dream sequences reminded me of The Wind Rises. Alberto had lots of abandonment issues. I want everyone to realize that before he met Luca, he was alone on the island for who knows how long. He had to grow up quick. He doesn’t have a desire to go to school. I like how they went down different paths. Alberto will be happy in a community and not be alone anymore which is what he wanted. Luca gets to learn about the world. The beginning of the movie didn’t really show us what Luca’s life was like because it was boring and small compared to the outside world. There were moments when I laughed because of how it was like The Little Mermaid. The townspeople were accepting so quickly because two old women, who probably were part of the community their whole lives, showed that they were sea monsters too. Not all of the townspeople did. Some of them were intimidated by Julia’s dad and gave up trying to kill them. Then they also saw two parents coming to hug their child and say how worried they were. It was just a family. The ending of the movie was perfect. Alberto never really wanted a Vespa. He wanted to go on adventures with Luca. Luca realizes he can’t leave Alberto alone so he gives up school. Alberto gives up the Vespa so that Luca can go to school and see the world. Alberto has a father figure, not a parent because he knows how to survive on his own and is pretty grown up. Luca assumes that Alberto is coming with him to school. Alberto was with him every step of the way as he was discovering the world. Now he has to do it on his own. The last shot of Luca looking out into the ocean and the island and all he has ever known soaked in the rain in his true form shows that he is ready to discover the world by himself as himself. The credits of the movie really showed us what everyone’s lives were like after the end of the movie. This was a Pixar masterpiece. I can’t accept any different answer.

Was hoping for a breezy, lower budgeted Pixar effort that would be low stakes, charming and poignant. It certainly seemed like that was the initial intent though the pacing was so painfully plotdriven and the world so half-coloured that all the childlike wonder was gradually sucked out, leaving what is very much a lesser emulation of the Pixar formula.
Having it streamed for free was a brilliant choice by Disney because I don't think audiences would have tolerated its slightness had they paid full emission.

I respect Pixar for trying something new, but this felt like I was watching a few episodes of a TV series mashed into a movie by George Lucas. There are 2 types of movies that I like: High-stakes movies and solid comedies that hardly have any consequences. This movie tries to dive in between these 2 aspects and therefore makes both of them weak. The first interactions between Alberto and Luca feel rushed with montages, and the ending feels incomplete. Sure Luca's going to school, but the movie acts as if school is the last point of success, as if it's the end of the story. But it's not. Of course Pixar's reputation is still strong, but this movie felt bland like Onward and lifeless like The Good Dinosaur.

i felt Souls plot was rushed and rather than spend time in the soul world your thrown back into the real world where Joe is nothing but cold and nasty to 22. And his "redemption" feels out of nowhere and so sudden.
The message is also a bit muddled by implying/saying you passion isnt your purpose. That isnt always true. some ppls passion IS their purpose
    meanwhile with luca
the plot flowed more smoothly building to the climax at a nice pace. The characters were all enjoyable (save the bully kid). And everyone acted they way they did for a reason (joe had no reason to be nasty to 22) And the message for Luca is clear. to love yourself as you are, stand by your friends even in hard times, and to not judge others by their looks
