    How I Invented a $1,000,000 Product
    In 2012 I invented a product that would go on to change my life and do well over $1,000,000 in retail sales. This is the story of how I invented that product, called the Bottlehook. In this video we talk about how the product was designed, how it was launched on Kickstarter, getting a patent for the invention, getting media and finally taking it off the market to perfect it and bring out version 3, which is available starting today!
    Thank you for this crazy ride - I hope you enjoy the video :)

    As a Mechanical Engineer I found this inspiring. I went to college to learn how to manufacture useful, physical things like this, and found most manufacturing was moving over seas. @charlesgriswold13 3 роки тому +2

      @@TheSully48 Fair enough. Although I thought I saw "made in USA" on an early version. When you go to volume, it just makes sense. In my dealings with China for example, the cost of finished goods (shipping and tarrifs included) can be less than 1/2 the cost of raw materials in the United States. That blows my mind. I don't know how to fix that. Of course, for that price, the cost of defending your IP and scrapping the out of specification parts will cut into that gap, but generally not by enough. More power to the people that keep swinging, and fighting that battle I say.

    • @Corter
      @Corter  3 роки тому +32

      I don't usually talk money but tbh it's more expensive to have them made overseas now than it was domestically - we couldn't find the quality we wanted in the US at the volume we needed and sampled from dozens of foundries all over the US for years. Custom brass mix, cooling times need to be monitored because of the open hook design so things don't get too brittle, specific finishing of the raw castings before plating...took almost 10 years to do it but i finally bit the bullet so we could get them up to the best quality possible.

    Everyone should be aware that the patent does not cover utility, nor does it prevent anyone from making a very - and I mean very - similar product. The patent only covers the specific graphical design of the product. Even small changes in the hook style and opening at the bottom (such as making it oval or rectangular) would bypass any protection afforded by the design patent.
    A much more functional and cost effective design could be made using a forging process to shape aluminum into a shape that offers the features of a carabiner clip (for an improved belt hook) and a bottle opener. The aluminum components could then be anodized in a wide variety of colors, and even laser etched with little phrases or corporate names.
    For an example of the difference in cost, you can purchase 150 anodized keychain carabiner clip from 4imprint with a corporate name for $263.50 plus a $45 setup charge. Keychain clips similar in function and design to the one featured in this video could be sold via Amazon for $10 per unit while making a gross profit margin of roughly $5 per unit - and without violating the design patent.

There are literally thousands upon thousands of different bottle opener designs that fit onto a key chain but none, until this product, where the actual bottle opener is the key chain. In my youth, when holidaying or visiting events I would attach a bottle open to my keychain but the majority of good bottle openers where large and cumbersome to use and always added extra weight to the keychain. Having something like this would have been perfect back in the day.
